The biomass, production and mortality of fine roots (roots with diameter <2.5 mm) were studied in a typical Mediterranean holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) forest in NE Spain using the minirhizotron methodology. A total of 1212 roots were monitored between June of 1994 and March of 1997. Mean annual fine root biomass in the holm oak forest of Prades was 71±8 g m–2 yr–1. Mean annual production for the period analysed was 260+11 g m–2 yr–1. Mortality was similar to production, with a mean value of 253±3 g m–2 yr–1. Seasonal fine root biomass presented a cyclic behaviour, with higher values in autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer. Production was highest in winter, and mortality in spring. In summer, production and mortality values were the lowest for the year. Production values in autumn and spring were very similar. The vertical distribution of fine root biomass decreased with increasing depth except for the top 10–20 cm, where values were lower than immediately below. Production and mortality values were similar between 10 and 50 cm depth. In the 0–10 cm and the 50–60 cm depth intervals, both production and mortality were lower. 相似文献

Summary In the Western Dinarides the Lower Liassic carbonates are underlain by Upper Triassic “Hauptdolomit”, whereas the first appearance
of the foraminiferOrbitopsella praecursor (Gümbel) marks the beginning of the Middle Liassic. Their composition, observed at several localities in Western Croatia,
shows a correlation of sedimentation events, which took place during Early Liassic on the Adriatic-Dinaridic carbonate platform.
Facies variability is interpreted as result of autocyclic sedimentary processes on which the carbonate platform reacted by
periodical oscillations of sea-bottom near the fair-weather wavebase. As a consequence, the Lower Liassic carbonate successions
in the Dinarides is characterized by stacking of two main types of coarsening-upward parasequences: (1) the basal part of
the Lower Liassic succession is represented by parasequences composed of mudstones or pelletal-bioclastic wackestones as their
lower members, and peloidal-bioclastic wackestone/packstones to grain-stones as their upper members; and (2) the upper part
of the Lower Liassic succession with parasequences consisting of mudstones or pelletal-bioclastic wackestones overlain by
ooid grainstones. Judging from the composition of parasequences and thickness relations of their members, the first type is
interpreted to comprise late transgressive system tract (ITST) and/or early highstand system tract (eHST), while the second
type corresponds to a late highstand system tract (1HST) and/or early lowstand system tract (eLST) of a third-order sequence. 相似文献

Biomass, carbonate standing stock and production of the mediterranean coralCladocora caespitosa (L.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The Mediterranean coralCladocora caespitosa often occurs in large beds, i.e. populations of hemispherical clonies with stock densities varying between 1.9 and 4 coloneis
·m−2. Laboratory measurements of volume, skeleton weight, surface and number of corallites per colony, coupled with mean annual
growth rates evaluated through sclerochronology, allowed for the estimation of biomass, skeleton bulk density, calcimass (carbonate
standing stock) and secondary production (both organic and inorganic) of twoC. caespitosa beds at 4 and 9 m depth. The mean colony biomass varied between 0.73 and 0.99 kg dw ·m−2, corresponding to a calcimass between 2 and 5 kg CaCO3·m−2. Organic secondary production was 215.5–305.4 g dw of polyps ·m−2·y−1, while the potential (mineral) production was 1.1–1.7 kg CaCO3·m−2·y−1, for the year 1996–1997.
These values show thatC. caespitosa is one of the major carbonate producers within the Mediterranean and one of the major epibenthic species originating stable
carbonate frameworks both in recent and past times. 相似文献

Rates of inorganic nutrient and oxygen fluxes, and gross community primary productivity were investigated using incubated cores in July, August and September 2001, in a seagrass meadow of Lake Illawarra, a barrier estuary in New South Wales, Australia. The results indicated that rates of gross primary productivity were high, varying from C = 0.62 to 1.89 g m–2 d–1; low P/R ratios of 0.28–0.48 define the system as heterotrophic and indicate that more carbon is respired than is produced. In order to determine the effect of macroalgae on O2 and nutrient fluxes, measurements were also conducted on cores from which the macroalgae had been removed. The results showed that the O2 fluxes during light incubations were significantly lower in the cores without macroalgae (P<0.01), indicating that macroalgae could be a significant contributor to the primary production in the lake. In general, nutrient fluxes showed a typical diurnal variation with an efflux from sediments in the dark and a reduced efflux (or uptake) in the light. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NO2
–+ NO3
–+NH4
+) net fluxes were directed from the sediments towards the water column and dominated by the NH4
+ fluxes (>80%). NO2
–+ NO3
– and o-P fluxes were always very low during the sampling period. The increasing tendency of net nutrient effluxes, especially NH4
+ from July to September, is consistent with the increase of the water temperature and seagrass biomasses. However, in September, significantly lower light, dark and net NH4
+ effluxes were found in the cores with macroalgae (SA-sediments) compared with the cores without macroalgae (S-sediments). These results support the hypothesis that actively-growing dense macroalgal mats (i.e., algal blooms in September) may act as a filter reducing the flux of nutrients to the water column. 相似文献

Aim Electronic distribution atlases and lists of ecological indicator values are becoming important tools in plant geography. In this contribution, we combine a geographical and an ecological data bank, and map out patterns of indicator value spectra (instead of single or average values) across a physiographically complex landscape. For our study, we select indicators of soil pH and carbonate content as key environmental factors that strongly affect overall plant diversity patterns in the temperate zone. Our goal is to relate the distribution and diversity of plant groups that are indicators of soil pH and carbonate content to environmental controls at the landscape‐scale, and thus contribute to a causal understanding of species pools. Location We studied the Bavarian Alps, which represent the German portion of the Northern Alps. Methods Based on the existing floristic survey, we calculated relative frequencies of nine classes of indicator plants for soil pH and carbonate content in grid cells. The resulting attribute matrix (cells by indicator class frequencies) was subjected to principal components analysis and to k‐means clustering. Results were compared and mapped out in the grid array of the whole region, resulting in continuous and discrete representations of species pool structure. We used a geographical information system to derive physiographical landscape properties from a geological map and a digital elevation model, and analysed their statistical relationship with the shapes of indicator spectra. Results and Main conclusions Averages of indicator values for soil pH and carbonate content follow the geological structure quite closely. Surprisingly, the diversity of indicator plant groups does not appear to be a function of geological or topographic heterogeneity. Rather, it seems to be related to areas of high elevation with uniform geology. The effect is a matter of additional acidophytes in high mountain areas and, in the high calcareous Alps, extreme calciphytes, while species with intermediate requirements are rarer than usual. For explanation, we suggest two facts: (1) a frequent lack of mature soils at high elevations and (2) particularities in soil genetic processes occurring under the harsh climatic conditions of high mountains. 相似文献

Effects of insects on primary production in temperate herbaceous communities: a meta-analysis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. 1. The effects of insects on primary production in temperate herbaceous communities were investigated in a meta-analysis. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) the effect of insects on primary production depends on community type, (2) the effect of insects on primary production varies as a function of productivity, (3) insects have a greater effect on primary production in communities with low species diversity, and (4) insects have a larger effect on primary production during outbreaks.
2. Data were collected from 24 studies in which insecticides were used to suppress insects in self-sown or pastoral communities. Effect sizes were calculated from sprayed and control plot standing crop or yield, expressed as the log response ratio, ln (sprayed plot phytomass/control plot phytomass).
3. There was a significant increase in primary production as a result of insect suppression. Forb-dominated communities showed a more variable response than graminoid communities. During outbreaks, insects had a greater negative impact on primary production. Effect size was unaffected by productivity or plant species richness.
4. Although insects lower primary production in a diversity of temperate herbaceous communities, the basic measures by which such communities are often described have little effect on the proportional impact that insects have on primary production. While outbreaks are significant predictors of higher negative impact on primary production, causes of outbreaks are not always related to traits of the plant community. 相似文献

We measured in laboratory experiments the ingestion, egg production and egg hatching rates of female Temora longicornis as a function of diet. The diets consisted of a diatom (Thalassiosira weissflogii), an autotrophic dinoflagellate (Heterocapsa triquetra), and a bacterivorous ciliate (Uronema sp.) given as sole foods, or combinations of these single-food items: diatom+dinoflagellate, diatom+ciliate, dinoflagellate+ciliate, and diatom+ciliate+dinoflagellate. For the three single-item diets, the functional response was similar; i.e., ingestion rate increased linearly with food concentration (food range: ∼25 to ∼600 μg C l−1). When all diets were considered, maximum daily carbon ration (∼70% of body weight) was independent of food type. However, the maximum daily egg production rate (12% of body carbon) was obtained with the diatom diet. For all diets, both ingestion and egg production rates increased with food concentration. Ingestion and egg production rates were affected differently by the interaction of food concentration and food type: at low food concentrations, ingestion rates were highest on diets containing the diatom. At high food concentrations, egg production rates were highest on the two phytoplankter diets and their combination. The presence of the ciliate in the diet did not enhance ingestion rate or egg production. Mixed-food diets did not enhance egg production relative to single-food diets. Hence, dietary diversity did not appear to be particularly advantageous for reproduction. Carbon-specific egg production efficiency (EPE; egg production/ingestion) was independent of food concentration and type, and equaled 9%. Egg hatching success was low (mean<30%) and independent of food concentration and type, and egg production rates. Our results are consistent with previous observations that egg production in T. longicornis is enhanced during diatom blooms. However, the relatively low EPE and egg hatching success suggest that reproduction and recruitment in this study were severely constrained by the biochemical composition of the diet, or the physiological condition of the females towards the end of their season of growth in Long Island Sound. 相似文献

In intensively farmed, reclaimed areas (polders) of Mont-St-Michel Bay, France, bank voles ( Clethrionomys glareolus ) live in fragmented hedgerows, where populations are small and dispersal rates and genetic diversity are low. These small populations are likely to have been exposed to potential environmental and/or genetic stress. The sensitivity of development to stress can be measured by fluctuating asymmetry (FA). FA was calculated for three samples from a disturbed area and one sample from an adjacent, more connected and undisturbed landscape. Size FA was estimated from 16 measurements of the skull and teeth whilst shape asymmetry was estimated from the skull alone. Bank voles in fragmented hedgerows of the disturbed area had a higher degree of FA than bank voles from the more extensive and more connected hedges of the undisturbed area. These results were confirmed by the study of shape asymmetry, body mass and centroid size of the skull. There were no differences in FA between the three disturbed area samples. We conclude that FA does not reveal differences in the development of bank voles living in isolation under different local conditions in the various parts of the disturbed area. However, FA may allow differentiation between populations from greatly contrasting landscapes. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80, 37–44. 相似文献
