Biomass and carbon storage of the North American deciduous forest   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Field measures of tree and shrub dimensions were used with established biomass equations in a stratified, two-stage cluster sampling design to estimate above-ground ovendry woody biomass and carbon storage of the eastern deciduous forest of North America. Biomass averaged 8.1 ± 1.4 (95% C.I.) kg/m2 and totaled 18.1 ± 3.1 (95% C.I.) gigatons. Carbon storage averaged 3.6 ± 0.6 (95% C.I.) kg/m2 and totaled 8.1 ± 1.4 (95% C.I.) gigatons. These values are lower than previous estimates commonly used in the analysis of the global carbon budget which range from 17.1 to 23.1 kg/m2 for biomass and 7.7 to 10.4 kg/m2 for carbon storage. These new estimates for the deciduous forest, together with earlier work in the boreal forest begin to reveal a pattern of overestimation of global carbon storage by vegetation in analyses of the global carbon budget. We discuss reasons for the differences between the new and earlier estimates, as well as implications for our understanding of the global carbon cycle.  相似文献

Nitrous oxide production was measured in intact cores taken from active pasture and old-growth forest Inceptisols in the Atlantic Lowlands of Costa Rica. Following additions of aqueous KNO3 or glucose, or the two combined amendments, the cores were incubated in the laboratory to determine if N2O production rates were either N-limited or C-limited in the two land use types. Differences in rates of denitrification (N22O + N2 production) among amended forest and pasture soils were determined by addition of 10% C2H2.The forest soils were relatively insensitive to all amendment additions, including the acetylene block. Forest N2O production rates among the treatments did not differ from the controls, and were consistently lower than those of the pasture soils. With the addition of glucose plus nitrate to the forest soils, production of N2O was three times greater than the controls, although this increase was not statistically significant. On the other hand, the pasture soils were definitely nitrogen-limited since N2O production rates were increased substantially beyond controls by all the amendments which contained nitrate, despite the very low N level (5 mg N kg–1 soil) relative to typical fertilizer applications. With respect to the nitrate plus glucose plus acetylene treatment, denitrification was high in the pasture soils; N2O production in the presence of C2H2 was 150% of the rate of N2O production measured in the absence of the acetylene block. The results are discussed in relation to the effects of agricultural land use practices and subsequent impacts of disturbance on N2O release.  相似文献

The extent to which the parasitic angiosperm Striga hermonthica reduces the growth of its sorghum host is dependent on the concentration of nitrogen (as NH4NO3 in 40% Long Ashton Solution) supplied to the plants. The biomass of 0.5,1 and 2 mol m?3 N-grown infected plants was 22,30 and 66%, respectively, of uninfected plants after 140d growth. The biomass of 3 and 4 mol m?3 N-grown infected plants differed little from uninfected plants. No grain was set in 0.5 and 1 mol m?3 N-grown infected plants, grain yield reached 42 and 73% of controls in 2 and 3 mol m?3 N-grown plants, and was unaffected in 4 mol m?3 N-grown plants. Striga hermonthica also altered the allometry and architecture of the host, at all but the highest N concentration. Higher N concentration (3 and 4 mol m ?3 N) reduced the growth of S. hermonthica. Foliar N concentrations in sorghum ranged from 11 mg g?1 dwt. in 0.5 mol m?3 N-grown plants, to 28 mg g?1 dwt. in 4 mol m?3 N-grown plants, and were not affected by S. hermonthica. Higher N concentrations were measured in S. hermonthica, and ranged from 18 to 45 mg g?1 dwt. in 0.5 and 3 mol m?3 N-grown plants, respectively. The relationship between photosynthesis (CO2 flux) and N concentration differed between uninfected and infected sorghum. This was most apparent in 0.5 mol m?3 N-grown plants, with rates of 16 and 11 μmol m?2 s?1 in uninfected and infected plants, respectively (at 1500–1800 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density). At higher N concentrations, this difference was smaller, with both sets of plants reaching 26 μmol m?2 s?1 at 4 mol m?3 N. Varying the level of S. hermonthica infection showed that the effect of N on host photosynthesis cannot be explained by differences in the mass or number of parasites supported by the host. At low levels of infection in 1 mol m?3 N-grown plants, the negative effect of the parasite was reversed, and photosynthesis in infected plants exceeded that in uninfected plants by 20%. Photosynthesis in S. hermonthica at 3 mol m?3 N (8 μmol m?2 s?1) was double that in 0.5 mol m?3 N-grown plants. Stable carbon isotope and gas exchange measurements data demonstrated that this higher level of autotrophic carbon fixation was accompanied by a lower dependency on hetero trophic carbon. The latter ranged from 27 to 6% in 0 5 mol m?3 and 3 mol m?3 N-grown plants, respectively.  相似文献

Ethylene production by primary roots of 72–h-old intact seedlings of Zea mays L. cv. LG11 was studied under ambient and sub-ambient oxygen partial pressures (pO2) using a gas flow-through system linked to a photoacoustic laser detector. Despite precautions to minimize physical perturbation to seedlings while setting-up, ethylene production in air was faster during the first 6h than later, in association with a small temporary swelling of the roots. When roots were switched from air (20–8kPa O2) to 3 or 5kPa O2 after 6h, ethylene production increased within 2—3 h. When, the roots were returned to air 16 h later, ethylene production decreased within 2—3 h. The presence of 10kPa CO2 did not interfere with the effect of 3kPa O2. Transferring roots from air to 12–5kPa did not change ethylene production, while a reduction to 1 kPa O2 induced a small increase. The extra ethylene formed in 3 and 5 kPa O2 was associated with plagiotropism, swelling, root hair production, and after 72 h, increased amounts of intercellular space (aerenchyma) in the root cortex. Root extension was also slowed down, but the pattern of response to oxygen shortage did not always match that of ethylene production. On return to air, subsequent growth patterns became normal within a few hours. In the complete absence of oxygen, no ethylene production was detected, even when anaerobic roots were returned to air after 16 h.  相似文献

Responses of individual roots of the widely cultivated cactus Opuntia ficus-indica to salinity stress were evaluated using a split-root system. Three roots from a plant with at least 20 roots were isolated from the remainder of the root system and exposed to 0, 30 or 100 mol m-3 NaCl for up to 28 d. Cortical cells became shorter and lateral root development was substantially reduced as salinity increased. Compared with the control, the increase in dry weight for the isolated roots was reduced 40% by 30 mol m-3 NaCl and 93% by 100mol m-3 NaCl. The sodium content of roots increased only two-fold with increasing salinity. Respiration rates of roots exposed to 30 or 100 mol m-3 NaCl were higher than those of the control. Carbon accumulation in roots measured 2 d after exposing shoots to 14CO2 was not initially affected by 30 mol m-3 NaCl but was substantially reduced at 100 mol m-3 NaCl. Thus, roots exposed to short periods of moderate salinity stress maintained sufficient carbon sink strength for continued growth of the roots. Moreover, increased salinity led to decreased efficiency of carbon usage for the expansion of root surface area.  相似文献

The effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 on water distribution in the intact roots of Vicia faba L. bean seedlings grown in natural soil was studied noninvasively with proton (1H) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging. Exposure of 24-d-old plants to atmospheric CO2-enriched air at 650 cm3 m?3 produced significant increases in water imaged in upper roots, hypogeal cotyledons and lower stems in response to a short-term drying-stress cycle. Above ground, drying produced negligible stem shrinkage and stomatal resistance was unchanged. In contrast, the same drying cycle caused significant depletion of water imaged in the same upper root structures in control plants subject to ambient CO2 (350 m3 m?3), and stem shrinkage and increased stomatal resistance. The results suggest that inhibition of transpiration caused by elevated CO2 does not necessarily result in attenuation of water transport from lower root structures. Inhibition of water loss from upper roots and lower stem in elevated CO2 environments may be a mitigating factor in assessing deleterious effects of greenhouse changes on crops during periods of dry climate.  相似文献

We have been investigating the hypothesis that the membrane-permeant molecules nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide(CO) may act as retrograde messengers during long-term potentiation (LTP). Inhibitors of either NO synthase or heme oxygenase, the enzyme that produces CO, blocked induction of LTP in the CA1 region of hippocampal slices. Brief application of either NO or CO to slices produced a rapid and long-lasting increase in the size of synaptic potentials if, and only if, the application occurred at the same time as weak tetanic stimulation of the presynaptic fibers. The long-term enhancement by NO or CO was spatially restricted to synapses from active presynaptic fibers and appeared to involve mechanisms utilized by LTP, occluding the subsequent induction of LTP by strong tetanic stimulation. The enhancement by No or CO was not blocked by the NMDA receptor blocker APV, suggesting that NO and CO act downstream for the NMDA receptor. In other systems, both NO and CO produce many of their effects by activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase nd cGMP-dependent protein kinase. An inhibitor of soluble guabylyl cyclase blocked the induction of normal LTP. Conversely, membrane-permeabel analog 8-Br-cGMP produced a rapid onset and long-lasting synaptic enhancement if, and only if, it was applied at the same time as weak presynaptic stimulation. Similarly, two inhibitors of cGMP-dependent protein kinase blocked the induction of normal LTP, and a selective activator of cGMP-dependent protein kinase produced activity-dependent long-lasting synaptic enhancement. 8-Br-cGMP also produced and activity-dependent, long-lasting increase in the amplitude of evoked synaptic current between pairs of hippocampal neurons in dissociated cell culture. In addition, 8-Br-cGMP, like NO, produced a long-lasting increase in the frequency of spontaneous miniature synaptic currents. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that NO and CO, either alone or in combination, serve as retrograde messengers that produce activity-dependent presynaptic enhancement, perhaps by stimulating soluble guanbylyl cyclase and cGMP-dependent protein kinase, during LTP in hippocampus. 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a lipid soluble steroid, administered to rats (100 mg/kg b.wt) by a single intraperitoneal injection, increases to twice its normal level in the liver microsomes. Microsomes so enriched become resistant to lipid peroxidation induced by incubation with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of a NADPH-regenerating system: also the lipid peroxidation-dependent inactivation of glucose-6-phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpetidase due to the haloalkane are prevented. Noteworthy, the liver microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes and in particular the catalytic activity of cytochrome P450IIE1, responsible for the CCl4-activation, are not impaired by the supplementation with the steroid. Consistently, in DHEA-pretreated microsomes the protein covalent binding of the trichloromethyl radical (CCl3°), is similar to that of not supplemented microsomes treated with CCl4. It thus seems likely that DHEA protects liver microsomes from oxidative damage induced by carbon tetrachloride through its own antioxidant properties rather than inhibiting the metabolism of the toxin.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rates of aquatic macrophytes are affected by the diffusion of carbon through the boundary layer which decreases with increasing flow velocities. This is shown by a significant increase in photosynthetic rates of Ulva lactuca fronds exposed to friction velocities (u *) between 0.0 and 0.3 cm s–1. No further increase in photosynthetic rates is observed at u * values between 0.3 and 1.0 cm s–1. Stagnating flow conditions at saturating light levels caused a 29% reduction in photosynthetic rates. Experiments in a closed system indicate that Ulva may utilize internal carbon sources during periods of stagnation. On a subtidal rock directly exposed to wave action, Ulva lactuca is not exposed to such conditions while in a wave flushed intertidal pool stagnation occurs during very short time intervals based on in situ measurements of u * levels on fronds of this species using a microprocessor-controlled, autonomous recorder and hot-film sensors.  相似文献
