Abstract:The major histocompatibility complex (MHC),with the highest genetic polymorphism,is a cluster of genes involved in immune response regulation in the vertebrates.MHC can provide information such as population genetic diversity, evolutionary history and population dynamics, and population genetic structure etc.It can also be applied in the captive breeding programme for endangered vertebrate species.
Key words:major histocompatibility complex (MHC);genetic diversity,population viability;population genetic structure;captive breeding 相似文献

Cost/benefit analyses have been used to understand the evolutionof mating by females with multiple males, as in extrapair copulations(EPCs), which are now known to occur commonly in socially monogamousand polygynous birds. Indirect (genetic) benefits have beeninvoked to explain such mating patterns in some cases, butdirect benefits have received less attention. We report a studyof direct benefits in the communally rearing Mexican jay (Aphelocoma
ultramarina). The social mate of the mother (putative father)is the most reliable feeder of the young in his nest, regardlessof cuckoldry. Feedings provided by social fathers are not reducedin relation to their paternity loss. In contrast, mothers havingnestlings sired by a second male tend to have lower feedingrates than those without such young. Secondary fathers provideda significantly higher level of feeding to the brood of theirfemale than did (1) random nonbreeders of all ages and bothsexes, (2) random male nonbreeders of all ages, and (3) older(2+ years), male nonbreeders. Surprisingly, however, broodswith two fathers did not receive a higher level of total feeding, despite our observation that two-father broods had two more
helpers, on average, compared to broods without extra fathers.Regardless of age or breeding status, males were more frequentfeeders than females. This study provides the first evidencethat one of the major costs of reproduction, maternal careof nestlings, is reduced for females that have young sired by
secondary males. 相似文献

This study sought to assess the potential effects of hand‐rearing by evaluating the relationships among rearing type and reproductive success in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan® for western lowland gorillas. Our study included data on 697 gorillas: 257 wild‐born (WB) and 440 born at zoos or related facilities in North America. We found no significant differences in the number of reproductive zoo‐born (ZB) and WB females, but more WB males sired infants than their ZB counterparts. This was influenced by a skew in the number of reproductive years for WB males in the studbook. ZB males showed no difference in infants produced per reproductive year, as compared to WB males, while ZB females produced more infants per reproductive year than did WB females. Mother‐reared (MR), ZB females produced more offspring and used more reproductive opportunity than hand‐reared (HR) females, whereas rearing had no effect on the reproductive success of ZB males. Moreover, MR and partially hand‐reared (PHR) females were more likely to become nurturing mothers themselves. Zoo Biol 21:389–401, 2002. © 2002 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Captive breeding has been suggested as a method of conserving many threatened vertebrates, and is increasingly being proposed as a valuable conservation strategy for invertebrates. Potential genetic problems associated with ex situ conservation are widely recognized, but a further issue has received less attention: the possibility that populations will undergo adaptation to the captive environment, rendering them less well adapted to survival in the wild. We investigated six traits related to dispersal and reproduction in a culture of the large white butterfly Pieris brassicae (L.), that had been captive for c. 100–150 generations, and in recently wild stock reared simultaneously in a common environment. Individuals in the captive culture were heavier, with smaller wings and lower wing aspect ratios. Females from the captive culture laid many more eggs in cage experiments, and had higher ovary mass at the time of peak egg production. These differences are consistent with adaptation to captive conditions. Over time, similar evolutionary changes may affect invertebrates reared in ex situ conservation programmes, decreasing the likelihood that these species can be re-established in the wild. Although the timescale over which most vertebrates are likely to adapt to captivity is longer, and the traits involved will be different, invertebrates like P. brassicae may also provide a model of potential problems in long-term ex situ conservation programmes for both invertebrates and vertebrates. We suggest that measures to reduce or slow adaptation to captivity should be introduced alongside measures to reduce deleterious genetic effects in captive populations. 相似文献

Local community participation and ex situ conservation has the potential to assist the recovery of the endangered Egyptian tortoise, Testudo kleinmanni. We initiated an in situ community‐based conservation and research program from a captive population of T. kleinmanni. We used a captive population of the Egyptian tortoise to train a member of the local community as a research technician and used his indigenous tracking skills and knowledge of the area to collect activity and dietary data on 28 captive tortoises. We overcame problems with illiteracy by creating a data sheet based on symbols and numbers. This data sheet allowed us to use the indigenous knowledge of various people from the community, and employ them in the future. Our local community approach to data collection, in conjunction with a craft program, made the conservation of the Egyptian tortoise more rewarding to the local community by providing a more sustainable form of income than collecting animals for the pet trade. Our multidimensional approach (local community participation as research technicians, craft program, and trust building) for gaining local support eventually led to the rediscovery of wild Egyptian tortoises in North Sinai, which was significant, as this species was presumed extinct in Egypt. We have now shifted our focus to in situ conservation, using the research and local capacity building template developed from this captive population study. Our template can be used by zoos and conservation organizations with small budgets and collections of native species in natural habitats to create similar captive research programs that can be applied to in situ conservation. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of infant restraint on dyadic interactions and maternal foraging patterns. Five bonnet macaque (Macaca radiata) mother-infant dyads were observed under three conditions: high foraging demand for the mothers with nonrestrained contact between mothers and infants (HFD-NRC), high foraging demand with restrained contact (HFD-RC), and low foraging demand with restrained contact (LFD-RC). In the restrained contact conditions the infants lived in a nursery within the group pen that allowed dyadic nursing, contact, proximity, and grooming, but prevented the infants from being with their mothers in the remaining portions of the pen, including the foraging area. Observations began when the infants were a mean of 5.4 months old. HFD-RC resulted in decreased dyadic contact relative to HFD-NRC, but did not significantly affect foraging task engagement; there were, however, marked individual differences in the response patterns of the mothers. Dyadic contact was also decreased during the LFD-RC condition, but maternal patterns under low demand resulted in lower levels of infant contact initiation. This study demonstrated the feasibility of a nursery-restrained rearing paradigm in exploring the strategic patterns of coping with conflicting environmental and maternal demands in bonnet macaque mothers. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Virgin queens are as effective as mated laying queens at inhibiting colonies from rearing queens but not from producing queen cell cups. Colonies without brood produce fewer queen cell cups than similar colonies that have brood. Colonies without queens forage much less and collect less pollen than with either a mated or virgin queen. Colonies with virgin queens forage as much as those with mated queens but collected less pollen. 相似文献
