The synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence technique (SRXRF) was applied to the determination of K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, and Sr concentrations in the liver and lungs in Wistar rats. The animals in the experiment included (1) healthy rats, (2) rats with alimentary obesity (AO), and (3) rats with alimentary obesity that were being given zinc sulphate with water for a long time (АО + Zn). Each group was divided into two subgroups. The experiment with the first subgroup was terminated with the animals in the state of physiological hunger and subsequent retrieval of liver and lung tissue, while the animals of the second subgroup were sacrificed two hours after ingestion of lard. The rats in physiological hunger manifested intergroup differences in the content of the bioelements (BEs) neither in the liver nor in the lungs. The rats with AO, as compared with the healthy animals, demonstrated in physiological hunger redistribution of inter-element correlations (IECs), which is an indirect reflection of sustained metabolic disorder. Additional zinc in the rats’ ration did not affect their body weight and the concentration of the BEs (including zinc) in the liver and the lungs. However, the IECs in the tissues of these animals in physiological hunger also changed. This redistribution differed from that in the rats with AO. The IECs soon after ingestion of lard also changed, which also reflects sustained changes in the metabolism in the animals. 相似文献
Theories of ecological diversification make predictions about the timing and ordering of character state changes through history. These theories are testable by “reconstructing” ancestor states using phylogenetic trees and measurements of contemporary species. Here we use maximum likelihood to estimate and evaluate the accuracy of ancestor reconstructions. We present likelihoods of discrete ancestor states and derive probability distributions for continuous ancestral traits. The methods are applied to several examples: diets of ancestral Darwin's finches; origin of inquilinism in gall wasps; microhabitat partitioning and body size evolution in scrubwrens; digestive enzyme evolution in artiodactyl mammals; origin of a sexually selected male trait, the sword, in platies and swordtails; and evolution of specialization in Anolis lizards. When changes between discrete character states are rare, the maximum-likelihood results are similar to parsimony estimates. In this case the accuracy of estimates is often high, with the exception of some nodes deep in the tree. If change is frequent then reconstructions are highly uncertain, especially of distant ancestors. Ancestor states for continuous traits are typically highly uncertain. We conclude that measures of uncertainty are useful and should always be provided, despite simplistic assumptions about the probabilistic models that underlie them. If uncertainty is too high, reconstruction should be abandoned in favor of approaches that fit different models of trait evolution to species data and phylogenetic trees, taking into account the range of ancestor states permitted by the data. 相似文献
1. Duckweed (Lemna minor), collected either in summer or early fall was exposed under laboratory conditions to control (photosynthetically active and UV‐A radiation) or experimental (control plus UV‐B radiation) conditions. 2. Growth and survival were determined by counting the number of green, and brown/white fronds following 1–5 or 11 days of irradiation. Growth of duckweed was impaired by exposure to UV‐B radiation in the fall experiment but not in the summer. 3. Fatty acid compositions were analysed following 5 or 11 days of irradiation and a recovery period of 0, 5, 29 or 40 h. Concentrations of the major fatty acids, palmitic, linoleic (LA) and α‐linolenic (ALA) acids were similar in the summer and fall duckweed collections, but the summer samples had higher concentrations of the desaturation products of LA and ALA. 4. UV‐B exposure had small, but significant, and contrasting effects on duckweed fatty acid concentrations. In the summer experiment, duckweed exposed to UV‐B had slightly lower concentrations of major fatty acids than control duckweed, while the reverse was true in the fall experiments. 5. These minor effects of UV‐B on concentrations of LA and ALA would be unlikely to have a major impact on the supply of these essential fatty acids from duckweed to freshwater food webs. 相似文献
The elevated activity of fatty acid synthase has been reported in a number of cancer types. Inhibition of this enzyme has been demonstrated to induce cancer cell death and reduce tumor growth. In addition, the fatty acid synthase inhibitor drug C75 has been reported to synergistically enhance the cancer‐killing ability of ionizing radiation. However, clinical use of C75 has been limited due to its producing weight loss, believed to be caused by alterations in the activity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase‐1. C75 is administered in the form of a racemic mixture of (−) and (+) enantiomers that may differ in their regulation of fatty acid synthase and carnitine palmitoyltransferase‐1. Therefore, we assessed the relative cancer‐killing potency of different enantiomeric forms of C75 in prostate cancer cells. These results suggest that (−)‐C75 is the more cytotoxic enantiomer and has greater radiosensitizing capacity than (+)‐C75. These observations will stimulate the development of fatty acid synthase inhibitors that are selective for cancer cells and enhance the tumor‐killing activity of ionizing radiation, while minimizing weight loss in cancer patients. 相似文献
1. 1.|Independent of their diverse feeding habits almost all bats are nocturnal. One hypothesis for chiropteran nocturnality is that bats flying in the day experience fatal hyperthermia because their wings take up significant amounts of short-wave radiation which they are unable to dissipate convectively. Factors that will critically affect a bat's susceptibility to overheating are the albedo and transmittance of wing membranes to short-wave radiation.
2. 2.|Albedo of taut segments of bat wings from four species of insectivorous bats and one Pteropid varied between 0.026 (for Rhinolophus hipposideros) and 0.069 (Plecotus auritus).
3. 3.|Transmittance exceeded albedo in all species studied and varied from 0.077 (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) to 0.194 (P. auritus). In this small sample there was no relationship between albedo and transmittance.

Given a clear sky short-wave flux density of about 971 W · m−2 a typical small insectivorous bat (5g, wing AREA = 0.013 m2, ABSORPTIVITY = 81.9%) with fully outstretched wings and the sun directly overhead would absorb about 10.65 W, compared with the maximum endogenous heat production from flight of 0.83 W.

The concept of using sunlight for micropropagation systems is proposed as a way of reducing tissue culture costs. Shoot tips
of Musa acuminata cultivar ‘Grande Naine’ were cultured in a non-controlled natural light environment at the IAEA Laboratories,
Austria during summertime. Significantly more shoots were produced by plantlets cultivated in a sunlit room with photosynthetic
photon flux densities (PPFD) fluctuating up to 570 μmol m-2 s-1, temperatures between 23 and 30 °C and photoperiods of 12
to 16-h, than by plantlets under artificial light in a growth chamber providing controlled conditions of a constant PPFD of
65 μmol m-2 s-1, temperatures ranging from 23 to 29 °C and a 16-h photoperiod. Highest multiplication rates were achieved
in a greenhouse with PPFD reaching 860 μmol m-2 s-1 and temperatures of 18 – 43 °C, but browning of leaves and loss of turgor
occurred. Nevertheless, rooted plantlets showed 100% survival during acclimatisation and normal development. Photoperiods
of 12 – 16 h did not affect the multiplication rates.

Turkey sperm were exposed to 2.45-GHz microwave radiation in a temperature-controlled wave-guide apparatus. Temperature was maintained at either 25 or 40.5 degrees C. The sperm were exposed for 30 min at a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 10 or 50 mW/g. Following irradiation, the sperm were used to inseminate virgin turkey hens artificially. During the 9 weeks following the single insemination, the following were assessed: mean number of eggs, percentage of fertile eggs, rate of decrease in egg fertility, percentage of hatched eggs, and percentage of early and late deaths. These data demonstrate that, for the conditions used in these experiments, microwave radiation has no effect on the fertilizing capacity of turkey sperm. 相似文献
It has been shown that adding biochar to soil can improve nitrogen (N)
uptake and utilization in rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, there is a lack of
research on the physiological alterations of rice as a result of the changes in nitrogen uptake due to the addition of biochar. This study conducted field experiments
in 2015 and 2016 with the goal of testing the hypothesis that the application of
biochar would enhance radiation use efficiency (RUE) of rice by improving the
plant’s ability to take in and utilize nitrogen. Our results demonstrated that the
application of biochar (20 t ha−1
) induced no significant effects on pre-heading
specific leaf weight (SLW), nitrogen uptake (NUpre), and leaf area index (LAI)
at heading, the ratios of LAI/NUpre and SLW/Nupre, or pre-heading RUE. However, biochar application significantly increased post-heading nitrogen uptake
(NUpost), ratios of NUpost/SLW and NUpost/LAI, and post-heading RUE. These
results indicate that the application of biochar can improve the plant’s nitrogen
uptake and RUE in field-grown rice during the post-heading period, which con-
firms our hypothesis. 相似文献
Because tropical forests face serious threats and are usually situated in developing countries, cheap and easy Rapid Biodiversity Assessment (RBA) seems an ideal strategy for documenting changes in habitat quality and setting conservation priorities. Fruit‐feeding butterflies are often used as focal taxa to document biodiversity trends in tropical forests. However, the choice of inappropriate sampling strategies may nullify its value. More extensive data sets that sample multiple months and seasons and incorporate the vertical dimension are needed as a baseline for designing reliable sampling regimes. Therefore, we performed a butterfly trapping study in Ghana, using both understorey and canopy traps, and sampling seven periods covering dry and wet seasons. Both individual numbers and species richness were on average three to four times higher in the understorey than in the canopy traps with strikingly different species composition (only 11% overlap in species). The number of species and individual abundance recorded in a month varied extensively. This study underlined the importance of taking into account temporal variation and vertical stratification when designing RBAs of fruit‐feeding butterflies in West African forests. We recommend the use of both understorey and canopy traps and inclusion of both ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ seasons into RBA sampling regimes. 相似文献
