Around the world, human populations have experienced large increases in average lifespan over the last 150 years, and while individuals are living longer, they are spending more years of life with multiple chronic morbidities. Researchers have used numerous laboratory animal models to understand the biological and environmental factors that influence aging, morbidity, and longevity. However, the most commonly studied animal species, laboratory mice and rats, do not experience environmental conditions similar to those to which humans are exposed, nor do we often diagnose them with many of the naturally occurring pathologies seen in humans. Recently, the companion dog has been proposed as a powerful model to better understand the genetic and environmental determinants of morbidity and mortality in humans. However, it is not known to what extent the age‐related dynamics of morbidity, comorbidity, and mortality are shared between humans and dogs. Here, we present the first large‐scale comparison of human and canine patterns of age‐specific morbidity and mortality. We find that many chronic conditions that commonly occur in human populations (obesity, arthritis, hypothyroidism, and diabetes), and which are associated with comorbidities, are also associated with similarly high levels of comorbidity in companion dogs. We also find significant similarities in the effect of age on disease risk in humans and dogs, with neoplastic, congenital, and metabolic causes of death showing similar age trajectories between the two species. Overall, our study suggests that the companion dog may be an ideal translational model to study the many complex facets of human morbidity and mortality. 相似文献

Bush encroachment is reported from savannah regions worldwide. Different management strategies are used to rehabilitate these areas. In this context, the mutual interaction between vegetation and large herbivore's distribution is evident. We studied effects of land management on vegetation structure in regard to encroaching species and the subsequent habitat use of two grazing (oryx, Oryx gazella L.; common warthog, Phacochoerus africanusGmelin ) and one browsing (greater kudu, Tragelaphus strepsicerosPallas ) herbivore species. We assumed that (i) cleared areas will be favoured by grazers and (ii) noncleared areas will be favoured by browsers. Specifically, we asked: Which factors determine the habitat use of these different feeding guilds? Consistently with our expectations, we found that warthog favoured sites with high grass cover. For oryx, surprisingly shrubs with a height of 80–150 cm influenced their distribution positively, whereas for kudu, only the interaction of site and grass cover was significant in our models. However, this was related to the occurrence of shrubs of 80–150 cm height. We conclude that the management of encroachers, resulting in differences in vegetation, did not influence herbivore distribution as expected. Hybridization between wild species and their domestic counterparts may represent a major threat to natural populations. However, high genetic similarity between the hybridizing taxa makes the detection of hybrids a difficult task and may hinder attempts to assess the impact of hybridization in conservation biology. In this work, we used a combination of 42 autosomal microsatellites together with Y-chromosome microsatellite-defined haplotypes and mtDNA sequences to investigate the occurrence and dynamics of wolf-dog hybridization in the Iberian Peninsula. To do this, we applied a variety of Bayesian analyses and a parallel set of simulation studies to evaluate (i) the differences between Iberian wolves and dogs, (ii) the frequency and geographical distribution of hybridization and (iii) the directionality of hybridization. First, we show that Iberian wolves and dogs form two well-differentiated genetic entities, suggesting that introgressive hybridization is not a widespread phenomenon shaping both gene pools. Second, we found evidence for the existence of hybridization that is apparently restricted to more peripheral and recently expanded wolf populations. Third, we describe compelling evidence suggesting that the dynamics of hybridization in wolf populations is mediated by crosses between male dogs and female wolves. More importantly, the observation of a population showing the occurrence of a continuum of hybrid classes forming mixed packs may indicate that we have underestimated hybridization. If future studies confirm this pattern, then an intriguing avenue of research is to investigate how introgression from free-ranging domestic dogs is enabling wolf populations to adapt to the highly humanized habitats of southern Europe while still maintaining their genetic differentiation. 相似文献

Dysregulation of cellular iron homeostasis in human breast cancer is reflected by the altered expression of regulatory proteins. The expressions of iron-related proteins in the mammary glands of cats and dogs have not been assessed. We evaluated the expressions of ferritin, ferroportin, hepcidin and transferrin receptor 1 in benign and malignant mammary gland lesions in cats and dogs. Iron deposition was detected using Perls’ Prussian blue staining. We found no major differences in the expression of iron-related proteins between benign and malignant mammary gland lesions in either cats or dogs; however, these species exhibited accumulation of iron in benign lesions. Our findings provide an explanation for the absence of higher iron requirements by tumor cells in these animals. Further investigation of local iron homeostasis in cats and dogs and differences in their physiology compared to human breast cancer is required. 相似文献

The goal of the present study was to investigate the influence of urbanization on the richness, abundance and composition of arthropod communities associated with creosote bush, Larrea tridentata [DC] Cov., in Phoenix, Arizona. Arthropod communities were sampled in two desert types varying in degree of urbanization including fringe deserts (relatively undisturbed expanses of desert outside of Phoenix) and urban deserts (patches of desert within the urban core of Phoenix). Two studies were conducted including (1) a seasonal study (conducted at two fringe desert and two urban desert sites over a nine-month period), and (2) a snapshot study (conducted at multiple fringe desert and urban desert sites over an eight-day period). Results from both studies demonstrated that overall richness and abundance of creosote bush arthropod communities were lower in urban deserts than in fringe deserts. Additionally, creosote bush arthropod community composition varied greatly, both temporally and spatially. These differences in richness and abundance between fringe deserts and urban deserts suggest that the creosote bush arthropod community may be a useful focal biotic community to monitor when assaying for environmental change due to urbanization in arid habitats. 相似文献

Plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, is an exotic disease in North America circulating predominantly in wild populations of rodents and their fleas. Black-tailed
prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) are highly susceptible to infection, often experiencing mortality of nearly all individuals in a town as a result of plague.
The fleas of black-tailed prairie dogs are Oropsylla tuberculata cynomuris and Oropsylla hirsuta. We tested the efficiency of O. tuberculata cynomuris to transmit Y. pestis daily from 24 to 96 h postinfection and compared it to previously collected data for O. hirsuta. We found that O. tuberculata cynomuris has over threefold greater transmission efficiency (0.18 infected fleas transmit Y. pestis at 24 h postinfection) than O. hirsuta (0.05 fleas transmit). Using a simple model of flea-borne transmission, we combine these laboratory measurements with field
data on monthly flea loads to compare the seasonal vectorial capacity of these two flea species. Coinciding with seasonal
patterns of flea abundance, we find a peak in potential for flea-borne transmission in March, during high O. tuberculata cynomuris abundance, and in September–October when O. hirsuta is common. Our findings may be useful in determining the timing of insecticidal dusting to slow plague transmission in black-tailed

The cyclic guanosine monophosphate specific phosphodiesterase (cGMP-specific PDE) is a key enzyme in the phototransduction cascade of the vertebrate retina. This enzyme consists of two catalytic alpha and beta subunits, two identical inhibitory gamma subunits as well as a delta subunit. Mutations in PDE6A and the PDE6B genes lead to autosomal recessive (ar) forms of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in human and to the homologous disease in dogs, designated generalised progressive retinal atrophy (gPRA). We investigated the PDE6A gene in 13 gPRA-affected dog breeds including healthy animals, obligate gPRA carriers and gPRA-affected dogs. In the coding region of PDE6A only a rare sequence variation (G103A; Asp35Asn) was found in exon 1 of two healthy Tibet Terriers and one affected Cocker Spaniel. Using single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analyses we detected several sequence variations in eight of the PDE6A introns in different investigated breeds. Most informative for excluding the PDE6A gene as a cause for gPRA was a polymorphic microsatellite ((GT)10CG(GT)2CG(GT)12) in intron 14 and four sequence variations in intron 18 for almost all breeds investigated. The sequence variations of PDE6A did not segregate together with gPRA in 11 breeds. Since diseased animals were heterozygous for the polymorphisms, the PDE6A gene is unlikely to harbour the critical mutation causing gPRA in the following breeds: Chesapeake Bay Retriever. In this study, flower color, nectar properties, and inflorescence scent composition of eight natural and one introduced Buddleja davidii populations were investigated. Flower color of B. davidii was determined using the Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart and ranged from purple to white. Volume of nectar produced by a single flower ranged from 0.36 μl to 0.64 μl and total sugar concentration produced by inflorescence ranged from 17.0% to 33.5% in all populations. Floral nectar volume and sugar concentration were not significantly different between two flower color morphs in the B. davidii populations. Floral scents of B. davidii were collected using dynamic headspace adsorption and identified with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In total, 33 compounds were identified from the inflorescences of B. davidii. The identified scents were divided into five chemical classes based on their biosynthetic origin: irregular terpenes, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, fatty acid derivatives, and benzenoids. The scent profiles in all populations were dominated by few components, such as: 4-oxoisophorone, E,E-α-farnesene, and 1-octen-3-ol. Given that inflorescence scents from natural and introduced individuals coming from the same population have discrepant chemical composition, we infer that phenotype plasticity may mediate floral scent composition. Based on the comparison of present and other data available on floral scent in B. davidii, we conclude that inflorescence scent may serve as a specific signal helping to attract pollinating butterflies to locate flowers as nectar sources, and may have evolved in conjunction with the sensory capabilities of butterflies and moths as a specific group of pollinators. 相似文献

Effects of endotoxin administration on the ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport in canine cardiac sarcolemma were investigated. The results show that the sidedness of the sarcolemmal vesicles was not affected but the ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport in cardiac sarcolemma was decreased by 22 to 46% (p < 0.05) at 4 h following endotoxin administration. The kinetic analysis indicates that the Vmax for ATP and for Ca2+ were decreased by 50% (p < 0.01) and 32% (p < 0.01), respectively, while the Km values for ATP and Ca2+ were not significantly affected after endotoxin administration. Magnesium (1–5 mM) stimulated while vanadate (0.25–3.0 M) inhibited the ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport, but the Mg2+-stimulated and the vanadate-inhibitable activities remained significantly lower in the endotoxin-treated animals. These data demonstrate that endotoxin administration impairs the ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport in canine cardiac sarcolemma and that the impairment is associated with a mechanism not affecting the affinity towards ATP and Ca2+. Additional experiments show that the Ca2+ sensitivity of the Ca2+-ATPase activity was indifferent between the control and endotoxic groups suggesting that endotoxic injury impairs Ca2+ pumping without affecting Ca2+-ATPase activity. Since sarcolemmal ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport plays an important role in the regulation of cytosolic Ca2+ homeostasis, an impairment in the sarcolemmal ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport induced by endotoxin administration may have a pathophysiological significance in contributing to the development of myocardial dysfunction in endotoxin shock. 相似文献

Bush dogs (Speothos venaticus) are small, threatened canids from Central and South America. The ability to conduct population-level studies using noninvasive genetic samples would provide important information on this poorly understood species. We characterized eight dinucleotide microsatellite loci using samples from 15 captive bush dogs. Allelic diversity ranged from 2 to 5 alleles per locus, and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.267 to 0.933. All loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and no evidence of genotypic linkage disequilibrium was found. We determined that DBX6 and DBY7, two canid-specific molecular sexing primers, accurately indicate the sex of individual bush dog samples. 相似文献
