Electrical activity recorded from the olfactory bulbs and prepyriform cortex of guinea pigs, rats, and mice under conditions
of spontaneous behavior and upon presentation of odor stimuli was analyzed in a comparative aspect. The dynamics of electrographic
phenomena observed in rhinencephalic structures and the spectral composition of these phenomena are discussed considering
the probability that the high-frequency components of this electrical activity are not directly related to realization of
the olfactory function.

The growing popularity of traditional medicine and the unrestricted collection of medicinal plants from the wild have put many of the slow growing bulbous plant species at the risk of over-exploitation and extinction in South Africa. This study was aimed at comparing the phytochemical composition and biological (antibacterial and anticandidal) activities of bulb and leaf extracts of Tulbaghia violacea, Hypoxis hemerocallidea, Drimia robusta and Merwilla plumbea between spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons, with the view of promoting the use of leaves, as a conservation strategy. Antibacterial and anticandidal activities of petroleum ether (PE), dichloromethane (DCM), 80% ethanol and water extracts of bulbs and leaves were tested against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria and the fungus Candida albicans using the microdilution bioassay. Spectrophotometric methods were used to evaluate saponin and phenolic compositions for the four seasons. Leaf and bulb extracts exhibited comparable anticandidal activity (MIC < 1 mg/ml) in all the plant species in all seasons. Only ethanol and water extracts of H. hemerocallidea corms (autumn and winter) showed correspondingly good fungicidal activity amongst the bulbs tested. Antibacterial activity was fairly comparable between bulbs and leaves with at least one extract of each plant species showing some good MIC values in most of the seasons. The best antimicrobial activities were recorded in winter and autumn seasons, with MIC values as low as 0.2 mg/ml in the DCM bulb extracts of T. violacea (winter) against K. pneumoniae and S. aureus. The amounts of total phenolic compounds in all plant samples were generally higher in spring compared to the other seasons. Condensed tannin, gallotannin and flavonoid levels, depending on the sample, were either higher in spring or winter except for H. hemerocallidea (corm) which had higher gallotannin levels in autumn. Total saponin levels were higher in winter in all plant samples. Although variation was observed in the phytochemical concentrations between the bulbs and leaves of each plant species, their antimicrobial activities were fairly comparable. Leaves may be used as substitutes for bulbs in the treatment of bacterial and fungal ailments. 相似文献

Small epidermal pores of the electrosensory ampullae of Lorenzini located both ventrally and dorsally on the disk of Aptychotrema rostrata (Shaw and Nodder, 1794) open to jelly-filled canals, the distal end of which widens forming an ampulla that contains 6 ± 0.7
alveolar bulbs (n = 13). The sensory epithelium is restricted to the alveolar bulbs and consists of receptor cells and supportive cells. The
receptor cells are ellipsoid and their apical surfaces are exposed to the alveolar lumen with each bearing a single central
kinocilium. Presynaptic bodies occur in the basal region of the receptor cell immediately proximal to the synaptic terminals.
The supportive cells that surround receptor cells vary in shape. Microvilli originate from their apical surface and extend
into the alveolar lumen. Tight junctions and desmosomes connect the supportive cells with adjacent supportive and receptor
cells in the apical region. The canal wall consists of two cell layers, of which the luminal cells are squamous and interconnect
via desmosomes and tight junctions, whereas the cells of the deeper layer are heavily interdigitated, presumably mechanically
strengthening the canal wall. Columnar epithelial cells form folds that separate adjacent alveoli. The same cells separate
the ampulla and canal wall. An afferent sensory nerve composed of up to nine myelinated nerve axons is surrounded by several
layers of collagen fibers and extends from the ampulla. Each single afferent neuron can make contacts with multiple receptor
cells. The ultrastructural characteristics of the ampullae of Lorenzini in Aptychotrema rostrata are very similar to those of other elasmobranch species that use electroreception for foraging. 相似文献

Mutations in the human Crumbs homologue 1 (CRB1) gene cause severe retinal dystrophies. CRB1 is homologous to Drosophila Crumbs, a protein essential for establishing and maintaining epithelial polarity. We have isolated the mouse orthologue, Crb1, and analyzed its expression pattern in embryonic and post-natal stages. Crb1 is expressed exclusively in the eye, and the central nervous system. In the developing eye, expression of Crb1 is detected in the retinal progenitors, and later on becomes restricted to the differentiated photoreceptor cells where it remains active up to the adult stage. In the developing neural tube, expression of Crb1 is restricted to its most ventral structures, coinciding with the expression domain of Nkx2.2. In the adult brain, Crb1 expression is defined to areas where the production and migration of neurons occurs in adulthood. 相似文献

From the bulbs of the onion Allium cepa, a novel antifungal peptide distinct from the antimicrobial peptide previously reported from onion seeds was isolated. The antifungal peptide, designated allicepin, was purified with a procedure that involved aqueous extraction, ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, affinity chromatography on Affi-gel blue gel and FPLC-gel filtration on Superdex 75. Allicepin was unadsorbed on DEAE-cellulose and adsorbed on Affi-gel blue gel. The molecular weight of allicepin was estimated to be 10 K by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel filtration on Superdex 75. Allicepin exerted an inhibitory activity on mycelial growth in several fungal species including Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, Mycosphaerella arachidicola and Physalospora piricola. 相似文献

Isolation trails from garlic seed cloves of certain cultivars commercially distributed and rotted cloves of stored Baladi cultivar during 2010 and 2011 in different regions of Sohag, Egypt resulted in detection of four fungal genera Aspergillus, Botrytis, Fusarium and Penicillium. Moreover, Fusarium spp. was the most dominant fungi. Koch’ postulates were performed on cloves, seedlings and potted garlic plants. Results showed that isolates of F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum and F. solani were superior to other tested fungi and induced the highest cloves rot (CR). F. oxysporum highly reduced clove germination (CG), produced extensive seedlings damping-off and induced highly disease severity index of rotted roots/cloves followed by F. solani. Unexpectedly, it was found that F. proliferatum is contaminated and colonised seed cloves, extremely reduced CG and following harvesting caused the highest CR of stored bulbs. To our knowledge, this is first notice for occurrence of F. proliferatum causing CR of stored garlic bulbs in Egypt. 相似文献

We measured ABA content and sensitivity in bulblels of Lilium speciosum Thunb , regenerating from scale explants in vitro at temperatures (15, 20 or 25°C) that allowed the development of various levels of dormancy (very low, intermediate or high, respectively). The one-step purification and the accuracy of the immunoassay were confirmed by HPLC and by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. ABA content was not correlated with dormancy development. Sensitivity to ABA was determined as the difference in sprouting performance of excised bulblets on medium with and without ABA. In bulblets regenerating at 20 or 25°C. ABA sensitivity was high during the period of dormancy establishment and decreased thereafter. Dormant hulblets were almost completely insensitive to ABA. The changes in sensitivity to ABA were confirmed by measuring the level of ABA in bulblets at the time of sprouting. This level was, as expected, highest in bulhlels with low ABA-sensitivity. Briefly cold-treated bulblets, in which dormancy may he re-established by culture at 20°C, again became sensitive to ABA. ABA sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature bulblets that regenerated at I5°C and hardly developed any dormancy, were very sensitive to ABA. It was concluded that in addition to ABA sensitivity another, still unknown, factor played a key role in dormancy development. 相似文献
