We studied the nest defense behavior of Eurasian kestrels (Falcotinnunculus) towards a stuffed pine marten (Martes martes) througha 3-year vole cycle (199092) in western Finland. Survivalprobability of offspring decreases with a later start of breeding,and, therefore, early breeders should protect their offspringmore than late ones. We found this true for males during theincubation period, but not for females. In addition, we expectedthe nest defense intensity to increase with offspring number.During the incubation period, this was true for females, butnot for males. During the nestling phase, parents did not adjusttheir defense effort to natural or manipulated (by one to twoyoung) brood size. Survival prospects of kestrel offspring werehighest in the increasing vole year 1991 and lowest in the decreasingvole year 1992, and, therefore, we expected the defense activityof kestrels to follow the same trend. However, the oppositeresult appeared true for females with a similar tendency formales. Most hypotheses predicting avian nest defense behaviorwere not supported by our data. Temporally heterogeneous environmentand low degree of nest-site tenacity of migratory kestrels maymake them unfamiliar with environmental variation and survivalprospects of their offspring. Therefore, fitness benefits ofparental care are not predictable, and kestrels may thus adjusttheir parental effort to their own future reproductive potential(i.e., number of future breeding attempts), rather than to somecurrent investment indicator, like offspring age and number. 相似文献

Scorpions arc generally non-social, solitary animals that interact with conspecifics at birth, courtship or predation only.
The present study reports the presence of advanced sub social behaviour inHeterometrus fulvipes Brunner and evaluates the importance of its burrowing as a cause for such social behaviour.Heterometrus fulvipes constructed deep angular burrows at the base of plants. Burrows provided (i) protection against predation, (ii) increased
availability of food and (iii) ideal microclimate for year round activity of the scorpions. No cannibalism was observed in
laboratory maintained colonies. The risk of predation and the difficult by immatures to dig tunnels during dry soil conditions
may have forced the mother and offspring to live together in the burrow for longer durations. The cohabitation of relative
offsprings transforms the burrow into a nest. The members of a colony exhibits division of labour for nest expansion and in
foraging. The mother communicates with the immatures through “Buzz” sound and may provide premasticated food. There is food
sharing also among colony members. All these behaviours indicate the presence of advanced sub social behaviour inHeterometrus fulvipes. 相似文献

Calcium has long been known to play a role as a key cytoplasmic second messenger, but until relatively recently its possible involvement in nuclear signal transduction and the regulation of nuclear events has not been extensively studied. Evidence revealing the presence of transmembrane nuclear Ca2+ gradients and a variety of intranuclear Ca2+ binding proteins has fueled renewed interest in this key ion and its involvement in cell-cycle timing and division, gene expression, and protein activation. In suspension cultures of Phytolacca americana , betacyanin accumulation was reduced when cell division was inhibited by treatment with various inhibitors of DNA synthesis or anti-microtubule drugs. Aphidicolin (APC), an inhibitor of DNA synthesis, reduced the incorporation of radioactivity from labeled tyrosine into betacyanin, but the incorporation of radioactivity from labeled 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) into betacyanin was not affected by similar treatments. Propyzamide, another anti-microtubule drug, reduced incorporation of radioactivity from tyrosine and DOPA into betacyanin. However, the rate of incorporation from DOPA was higher than that from tyrosine. The results suggest that inhibition of betacyanin accumulation in Phytolacca americana cells by APC and propyzamide is due to suppression of the reaction converting tyrosine to DOPA, which may be closely related to cell division. 相似文献

Protoplasts isolated from both 7-day-old light-grown and 4-day-old dark/dim light-grown cotyledons of four Brassica campestris varieties (Arlo, Sonja, Bunyip and Wonk Bok) were cultured in three liquid media: modified K8P, modified MS and modified Pelletier's B to compare the capacities for cell division and plant regeneration. Following cell wall regeneration the cultured protoplasts from dark/dim light-grown cotyledons of four varieties showed rapid division and high frequency of cell division compared with those isolated from light-grown cotyledons. The frequencies of cell division were significantly influenced by varieties and culture media but only in cultured protoplasts isolated from dark/dim light-grown cotyledons. The interaction between varieties and media was also significant. Cell colonies formed within 7–14 days in protoplast cultures from dark/dim light-grown cotyledons, and calli subsequently grown on a solid medium developed shoots when transferred onto a regeneration medium. Three of four tested varieties (Arlo, Sonja and Bunyip) showed shoot regeneration within 2–3 months after protoplast isolation, with a high degree of reproducibility in Arlo and Bunyip. Regenerated shoots, which were induced to root on half-strength MS medium with 0.1 mg.l–1 IBA, survived in soil and grew to produce siliques and set viable seeds in the greenhouse. The present report is the first to document the production of regenerated plants that set seeds in Brassica campestris from cotyledonary protoplasts.Abbreviations BAP

Maitotoxin (MTX) induces an increase of [Ca2+]i and of phosphoinositide breakdown in various cell types. The [Ca2+]i increase followed with fluorescent probes on cell suspensions has been described as slow and lasting, in contrast to the signal induced by calcium ionophores such as ionomycin. MTX effects have been studied on two fibroblastic cell lines, BHK21 C13 and FR 3T3, synchronized by serum deprivation treatment performed in an isoleucine-free medium for BHK21 C13 cells. In BHK21 C13 cells, flow cytometry analysis showed that two stages, G1/S and G2/M, were particularly susceptible to MTX treatment. Scanning laser cytometry demonstrated that calcium response of FR 3T3 fibroblasts followed with Indo-1 varied during the cell division cycle. The [Ca2+]i increase was almost always vertical, but its delay after MTX addition lasted from zero (S and G2/M transition) to 10–20 min (G1) or more (G2). No [Ca2+]i change could be detected during mitosis. The [Ca2+]i response at the S phase was biphasic. These observations suggest that (1) the lasting response described in the literature represents a global cell population effect, and (2) cells are more sensitive to MTX at specific stages of the cell division cycle, which could correspond to periods when calcium signals have been detected in different cell types.Abbreviations MTX

Organization of microtubules (MTs) in relation to the behavior of nuclei was examined in dividing binucleate cells ofAdiantum capillus-veneris L. To induce binucleate cells, caffeine, an inhibitor of formation of the cell plate, was applied at 4 mM to synchronously
dividing protonemal cells during cytokinesis (Murata and Wada 1993). Formation of the preprophase band (PPB) during the next
cell cycle was examined in non-centrifuged and centrifuged cells. The two nuclei were separated or associated with one another
in both non-centrifuged and centrifuged cells, although the location of the nuclei in the cylindrical protonemal cells was
different (Murata and Wada 1993). Irrespective of centrifugation, a single PPB was formed around the nuclei in cells with
associated nuclei. Two PPBs were formed in cells with separated nuclei in centrifuged cells. Patterns of mitosis and cytokinesis
varied, depending on the location of the PPB and the distribution of the nuclei. The role of the nucleus in formation of the

Using cultured cells of the hornwortAnthoceros punctatus, the change in the relative chloroplast DNA content in each stage of chloroplast division was investigated to clarify the
relationship between the division cycle of a chloroplast and a cell nucleus. Samples of cultured cells were stained with 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole
(DAPI) and then observed with an epifluorescence microscope and a chromosome image analyzing system (CHIAS). A chloropiast
in cultured cells duplicated DNA with an increase in size. When a chloroplast began to divide, it was constricted in the middle,
taking a dumbbell shape, and then divided into two daughter chloroplasts. In cultured cells of this species, the pattern of
quantitative change of chloroplast DNA, that is, the DNA replication pattern of chloroplasts, corresponded to that of cell
