Behavioral ecology has successfully explained the diversityin social mating systems through differences in environmentalconditions, but diversity in genetic mating systems is poorlyunderstood. The difference is important in situations whereparents care for extrapair young (EPY) originating from extrapairpaternity (EPP), extrapair maternity (EPM), and intraspecificbrood parasitism (IBP). In birds, IBP and EPM are rare, butEPP is widespread and highly variable among species and populations.Explanations for this variability are controversial, mainlybecause detailed ecological information is usually lacking inpaternity studies. Here we present results of the first studyto identify the ecological determinants of extrapair activitiesfor both sexes of the same species, the water pipit (Anthusspinoletta). DNA fingerprints of 1052 young from 258 nests revealedEPP in 5.2% of the young from 12.4% of the nests. EPM and IBP,both involving egg dumping (EDP), each occurred in 0.5% of theyoung from 1.9% of the nests. Nests with and without EPY couldnot be distinguished by traits of the breeders and by reproductivesucccess, but they differed with respect to ecology: nests withEPP young were characterized by asynchronous clutch initiation,nests with EPM and IBP young were characterized by higher overlapwith neighboring territories and closer proximity to communalfeeding sites. We suggest that chance events, resulting fromthe temporal and spatial distribution of broods, offer a betterexplanation for the occurence of extrapair activities than femalesearch for genetic or phenotypic benefits. This possibilityof "accidental" extrapair reproduction as an "ecological epiphenomenon"with low potential for selection should also be considered forspecies other than the water pipit.  相似文献

Eucalyptus trees are among the most important species for industrial forestry worldwide. However, as with most forest trees, flowering does not begin for one to several years after planting which can limit the rate of conventional and molecular breeding. To speed flowering, we transformed a Eucalyptus grandis × urophylla hybrid (SP7) with a variety of constructs that enable overexpression of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT). We found that FT expression led to very early flowering, with events showing floral buds within 1–5 months of transplanting to the glasshouse. The most rapid flowering was observed when the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter was used to drive the Arabidopsis thaliana FT gene (AtFT). Early flowering was also observed with AtFT overexpression from a 409S ubiquitin promoter and under heat induction conditions with Populus trichocarpa FT1 (PtFT1) under control of a heat‐shock promoter. Early flowering trees grew robustly, but exhibited a highly branched phenotype compared to the strong apical dominance of nonflowering transgenic and control trees. AtFT‐induced flowers were morphologically normal and produced viable pollen grains and viable self‐ and cross‐pollinated seeds. Many self‐seedlings inherited AtFT and flowered early. FT overexpression‐induced flowering in Eucalyptus may be a valuable means for accelerating breeding and genetic studies as the transgene can be easily segregated away in progeny, restoring normal growth and form.  相似文献

【目的】筛选能抗营养阻遏产漆酶的黄孢原毛平革菌,论证其产漆酶的确定性及抗营养阻遏产木质素酶的可行性,为白腐菌产酶代谢调控、木质素降解机理的研究奠定基础。【方法】利用重复紫外诱变法,以愈创木酚富氮鉴别培养基筛选目标菌株;比较不同营养条件下菌体生长与产酶动力学差异研究产酶营养调控机理;通过热处理、排除锰离子和加入过氧化氢酶等不同措施论证黄孢原平毛平革菌能否产生漆酶。【结果】3种不同方法均证实选育到的pcR5305和pcR5324菌株在限氮与富氮条件下均能产生漆酶,pcR5305和pcR5324在限氮条件下产漆酶分别达到203.5、187.6 U/L;在富氮条件下为220.6、183.9 U/L,而原菌株pc530在两种条件下都基本不产生漆酶。二菌株产漆酶调控方式不同,pcR5305漆酶产生与菌体生长同步,而pcR5324漆酶产生却受营养氮阻遏。二菌株同时具有抗营养阻遏高产木质素过氧化物酶(LiP)和锰过氧化物酶(MnP)(分别为LiP 1343.2、MnP 252.2 U/L;LiP 1169.5、MnP 172.4 U/L)的能力。【结论】筛选到的黄孢原毛平革菌变异菌株能产漆酶,同时表现了抗营养阻遏产漆酶、木质素过氧化物酶和锰过氧化物酶的能力,具有重要的生产应用与理论研究价值,为白腐菌产酶代谢调控机理研究提供了原始菌株并奠定了良好的基础。  相似文献

理解入侵生物的繁殖策略是阐明生物入侵机制的一个重要方面。入侵植物常表现出一些共同的繁殖特征, 如以两性花为主的性系统、自动自交为主的繁育系统或不依赖传粉媒介的无融合生殖和无性繁殖以及高生殖投资的资源配置策略等。成功入侵的外来植物通过影响本土的传粉者, 在种群和群落水平上影响本土植物的有性繁殖, 甚至促使某些本土植物在繁殖对策和表型性状上发生快速转变。目前, 入侵植物繁殖策略及其生态效应的研究多侧重于入侵种的快速演化, 而有关外来植物与本土植物间的相互影响及其可能存在的协同适应研究还较为缺乏。探讨本土植物在外来种入侵压力下的繁殖对策和响应机制, 将丰富人们对物种间竞争、共存及群落构建等机制的深入了解。从繁殖和适应的角度探求入侵植物与本土植物之间的复杂关系, 将有助于解析生物入侵的机制及人类干扰下的物种演化规律, 也为预测和防控入侵植物提供科学依据。  相似文献

Gastrointestinal nematode infection is a constraint on sheep production worldwide. Selective breeding programmes to enhance resistance to nematode infection are currently being implemented in a number of countries. Identification of loci associated with resistance to infection or causative mutations for resistance would enable more effective selection. Loci associated with indicator traits for nematode resistance has been identified in previous studies. In this study, Scottish Blackface, Texel and Suffolk lambs were used to validate the effects at eight genomic regions previously associated with nematode resistance (OAR3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21). No SNP was significantly associated with nematode resistance at the region‐wide level but seven SNPs in three of the regions (OAR4, 12, 14) were nominally associated with trichostrongyle egg count in this study and six of these were also significant when fitted as single SNP effects. Nematodirus egg count was nominally associated with SNPs on OAR3, 4, 7 and 12.  相似文献

Hedyotis caerulea, a spring flowering herb widely distributed in eastern North America, has distylous flowers that differ by a number of morphological and physiological traits. The presence of a strong incompatibility system is indicated by the fact that intramorph crosses or self-pollinations produced little or no seed and intermorph crosses produced copious seed. An unusual homostyle was located that had most floral characters intermediate between pin and thrum flowers, although its pollen size was that of pin. The homostyle was only moderately self-compatible, and its pollen did not behave as pin pollen on thrum stigmas. It appears that, despite their intermediate position and morphology, the homostyle stigmas were fundamentally pin. Although the exceptional rarity of the homostyle suggests that it is an inadaptive failure, workers should watch for its further occurrence since additional study of it may provide insights into the genetic and physiological basis of heterostyly in theRubiaceae.  相似文献

Behavioral and endocrine suppression of reproduction in subordinate females produces the high reproductive skew that characterizes callitrichid primate mating systems. Snowdon et al. [American Journal of Primatology 31:11-21, 1993] reported that the eldest daughters in tamarin families exhibit further endocrinological suppression immediately following the birth of siblings, and suggested that dominant females exert greater control over subordinate endocrinology during this energetically challenging phase of reproduction. We monitored the endocrine status of five Wied's black tufted-ear marmoset daughters before and after their mother delivered infants by measuring concentrations of urinary estradiol (E(2)), pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG), testosterone (T), and cortisol (CORT). Samples were collected from marmoset daughters 4 weeks prior to and 9 weeks following three consecutive sibling-litter births when the daughters were prepubertal (M=6.1 months of age), peripubertal (M=11.9 months), and postpubertal (M=17.6 months). The birth of infants was associated with reduced ovarian steroid excretion only in the prepubertal daughters. In contrast, ovarian steroid levels tended to increase in the postpubertal daughters. Urinary E(2) and T levels in the postpubertal daughters were 73.8% and 37.6% higher, respectively, in the 3 weeks following the birth of infants, relative to prepartum levels. In addition, peak urinary PdG concentrations in peri- and postpubertal daughters were equivalent to luteal phase concentrations in nonpregnant, breeding adult females, and all of the peri- and postpubertal daughters showed clear ovulatory cycles. Cortisol excretion did not change in response to the reproductive status of the mother, nor did the concentrations change across age. Our data suggest that marmoset daughters of potential breeding age are not hormonally suppressed during the mother's peripartum period or her return to fertility. These findings provide an additional example of species diversity in the social regulation of reproduction in callitrichid primates.  相似文献

We trialled the efficacy of various exogenous hormones to induce spermiation, courtship behavior, and spawning in the “endangered” southern bell frog, Litoria raniformis. Intralymphatic administration of Lucrin®, a synthetic nonapeptide luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH), was used successfully to induce courting behaviors and ejaculation of spermatozoa in males. Various hormones, including Lucrin®, another synthetic LHRH analog ([des‐Gly10, D‐Ala6]‐LHRH), human chorionic gonadotropin, progesterone, and a dopamine receptor antagonist failed to promote oviposition and spawning in females. This and earlier studies indicate that in the efficacy of hormonal induction in amphibians varies between taxa, hormones, and genders. The lack of response in females may limit the use of reproduction technology in the southern bell frog and closely related species of Australian bell frogs. 开花期控制对观赏植物的生产和应用具有重要意义。目前关于高等植物成花机理的研究已经取得了突破性进展,为观赏植物花期调控开辟了新途径。该文总结了观赏植物花期调控的途径和方法,并对改良观赏植物花期的技术思路做了初步分析。通过与高等植物成花机制研究的对比分析发现,观赏植物开花机理的研究已有了长足发展,一些观赏植物的转基因研究也取得了丰硕成果。利用分子设计育种途径改良观赏植物的开花期,突破了传统方法的局限性,其研究和应用前景非常广阔。  相似文献
