Estimates of relationships between blood pressures and anthropometric structure or body composition were made on a total sample of 414 children, taking age and sex into account. A subsample of 250 children was formed from obese (or slightly obese) subjects. A different pattern in anthropometric structure and body composition resulted in relation to a different degree of obesity. A canonical correlation analysis was carried out for each sex, in which a multivariate measure of the linear association between heart-circulatory functionality parameters, on the one hand, and all the anthropometric traits and body composition parameters, on the other, was computed. This association resulted statistically significant in both sexes, also if a difference was observed as concerns the traits that most heavily contributed to the relation-ships between sets of variables, with an evident sexual dimorphism also in infancy. The necessity of preventive measures and sanitary screening also during infancy was pointed out.  相似文献

Interannual variation in Fulton's condition factor ( K ), total body-fat content and growth rate were investigated for the Icelandic summer-spawning herring Clupea harengus over the period from 1963 to 1999. The results show a close relationship between K and the body-fat content in the autumn, both of which correlated to the growth rate in the same calendar year. A relationship was also found between K during the prespawning season (February to June) and K in the autumn (September to December) in the same year. The different measures of body condition were not found to be related to sea temperature or zooplankton indices, while the spawning stock biomass had negative effects on the fish condition. The results imply that the body condition in the autumn is representative of the feeding success over the whole foregoing year and is therefore related to the growth rate that year. The growth rate appears to be relatively uniform throughout the year.  相似文献

A standard method comprising multi-mesh monofilament nylon gillnets and depth stratification, the Drottningholm method, was employed in test fishing of a small Zambian reservoir (32 ha) on eight occasions over 1 year. The catch per unit effort (cpue) from the 0–3 and 3–6 m zone was timated with benthic and pelagic nets, while in the 6–12 m zone only benthic nets were used. Results include species caught and cpue with coefficients of variation and confidence intervals, for net types and depth zones. A total of 11 species were caught, of which Burbus paludinosus , B. marequensis , Laheo cylindricus , and Oreochromis sp. dominated. Coefficients of variation did not indicate a preferable season for test fishing. During the cold season some species were not caught. The applicability of the method in estimation of species composition and cpue is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the epithelial cells of Reissner's membrane (membrana vestibularis) in the guinea-pig is described following vascular perfusion with glutaraldehyde of live, anaesthetised and artificially respirated animals. Postfixation in a solution containing OsO4 and potassium ferricyanide revealed a well-developed tubulocisternal endoplasmic reticulum, not previously described, the continuity of which has been mapped by serial sectioning and reconstruction. Large disc-shaped subsurface cisternae lining the cell membrane, but separated from it by a space approximately 10 nm wide, are in continuity with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, forming an elaborated transcellular canalicular pathway. This structure is compared to that found in solute-transporting epithelia, e.g., renal proximal tubule, gall bladder, small intestine and choroid plexus. The fixation method used in the present study is compared to other techniques used for preservation of Reissner's membrane. Each epithelial cell of Reissner's membrane is endowed with one kinocilium, one to four multivesicular bodies, and a number of intercalated bodies. The functional significance of the canalicular pathway is discussed.  相似文献

Ecological segregation (sexual differences in diet or habitat use) in large herbivores has been intimately linked to sexual body size dimorphism, and may affect both performance and survival of the sexes. However, no one has tested comparatively whether segregation occurs at a higher frequency among more dimorphic species. To test this comparatively, data on sex-specific diet, habitat use and body size of 40 species of large herbivores were extracted from the literature. The frequency of ecological segregation was higher among more dimorphic herbivores; however, this was only significant for browsers. This provides the first evidence that segregation is more common among more dimorphic species. The comparative evidence supported the nutritional-needs hypothesis over the incisor breadth hypothesis, as there was no difference in frequency of segregation between seasons with high and low resource levels, and since segregation was also evident among browsers. Whether the absence of a correlation between ecological segregation and level of sexual body size dimorphism for intermediate feeders and grazers is due to biological differences relative to browsers or to the fact that the monomorphic species included in the analysis were all browsers is discussed. Abstract. Diapause adults of Plautia stali Scott maintained at 20°C under short day conditions (LD 12:12 h) were exposed to four temperatures of 5–20°C to examine the effect on diapause development which was assessed in terms of oviposition. Diapause adults kept at 20°C under short day conditions changed their body colour gradually from brown to green and started egg laying after a prolonged preoviposition period. Those transferred to either 10 or 15°C also showed colour change but did not lay eggs. Bugs exposed to 5°C underwent neither body colour change nor oviposition and died more rapidly than those kept at higher temperatures. When 30-day-old diapause adults were chilled at 5, 10 or 15°C for 30 or 60 days and returned to 20°C and long day conditions (LD 16:8 h), the preoviposition period varied primarily depending on the chilling, but not on the temperature. On the other hand, when 60day-old diapause adults chilled for 30 days were observed at 20°C and long day conditions, their preoviposition period tended to be longer as the chilling temperature was lower In this case, a temperature of 10°C appeared to intensify diapause. Therefore, the effect of chilling on diapause development varied depending on the age at which insects were chilled. When chilled bugs were transferred to short day conditions at 20°C, most females failed to lay any eggs and some turned green, then after a while, some green bugs changed to brown again. These results indicate that bugs remained sensitive to short day conditions even after a 60-day chilling at 10 or 15°C.  相似文献

Objective: We examined predictors of weight loss with topiramate, an anticonvulsant associated with weight loss in adults. Research Methods and Procedures: In this uncontrolled, prospective clinical trial, topiramate was added to existing anticonvulsants in adults (40 to 110 kg) with partial‐onset seizures. Primary measurements were change from baseline weight after 3 months and 1 year in patients completing 1 year of topiramate treatment (N = 38). Physiological and metabolic measures were analyzed for correlation with weight loss during topiramate treatment. Results: In patients who completed 1 year of topiramate treatment, baseline weight was reduced in 82% at 3 months and in 86% at 1 year. Mean body weight was reduced 3.0 kg (3.9% of baseline) at 3 months and 5.9 kg (7.3%) at 1 year. In obese patients [body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2], mean weight loss was 4.2 kg (4.3%) at 3 months and 10.9 kg (11.0%) at 1 year. Weight loss was primarily caused by reduction in body fat mass. For all patients, weight loss at 3 months correlated most strongly with reduced caloric intake (p = 0.02). At 1 year, caloric intake had returned to baseline levels; weight loss correlated most strongly with higher baseline BMI (p = 0.0007). Discussion: Our results suggest that weight loss occurs in most adults treated with topiramate and is sustained for at least 1 year. Reduced caloric intake may account, in part, for weight loss during early treatment. The pattern of weight loss differs according to baseline BMI, with obese patients experiencing greater weight loss during continued therapy.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The ultrastructure of promastigotes of 4 reptilian isolates of Leishmania grown in culture, is described. One mammalian isolate of Leishmania is also examined for comparison. No differences in the basic ultrastructure of these strains are apparent; neither is there any significant digression from the organization described for other trypanosomatids. It appears, however, that the numbers of subpellicular microtubules are of potential use in taxonomy, and that differences in the spacing of these organelles exist between reptilian and mammalian forms. In addition, an attempt is made to clarify aspects of attachment of the flagellum to the subpellicular tubule network, and to the anterior face of the kinetoplast. Finally, the formation of multivesiculate bodies from the Golgi apparatus is described, together with some features of dividing forms.  相似文献

Starfish oocytes artificially activated by a calcium ionophore will develop normally if the formation of polar bodies is suppressed. In the present paper, schedules of the DNA replication period (S phase) of these parthenogenotes were explicitly timed using 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) and anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody. Their schedule of S phase was identical to that of fertilized eggs. Consequently, an S phase regulation system is triggered even in parthenogenotes raised by dual treatment of egg activation and polar body suppression. The S phase schedule of parthenogenotes confirms the temporal pattern of chromosome duplication, observed by other researchers, leading to tetraploid parthenogenotes. The S phase determination also provides a basis for argument concerning the number of centrioles participating in parthenogenetic development. If polar body formation of activated eggs was not suppressed, the first S phase was normal, but the second S phase did not recur on time. A rigidly regulated system of DNA replication cycle, which should be an essential prerequisite for parthenogenesis, thus requires the content of polar bodies.  相似文献

Macroevolutionary theory predicts high rates of evolution should occur early in a clade's history as species exploit ecological opportunity. Evidence from the fossil record has shown a high prevalence of early bursts in morphological evolution, but recent work has provided little evidence for early high rates in the evolution of extant clades. Here, I test the prevalence of early bursts in extant data using phylogenetic comparative methods. Existing models are extended to allow a shift from a background Brownian motion (BM) process to an early burst process within subclades of phylogenies, rather than an early burst being applied to an entire phylogenetic tree. This nested early burst model is compared to other modes of evolution that can occur within subclades, such as evolution with a constraint (Ornstein‐Uhlenbeck model) and nested BM rate shift models. These relaxed models are validated using simulations and then are applied to body size evolution of three major clades of amniotes (mammals, squamates and aves) at different levels of taxonomic organization (order, family). Applying these unconstrained models greatly increases the support for early bursts within nested subclades, and so early bursts are the most common model of evolution when only one shift is analysed. However, the relative fit of early burst models is worse than models that allow for multiple shifts of the BM or OU process. No single‐shift or homogenous model is superior to models of multiple shifts in BM or OU evolution, but the patterns shown by these multirate models are generally congruent with patterns expected from early bursts.  相似文献
