We investigated the anatomical expression of leaf traits in hybrids between evergreen Vaccinium vitis‐idaea and deciduous V. myrtillus. We compared parents from four populations with their respective F1 hybrids and tested whether (i) transgression can be the source of novel anatomical traits in hybrids; (ii) expression of transgressive traits is more probable for traits with similar values in parents and intermediate for more distinct values, as predicted by theory; and (iii) independent origin of hybrids leads to identical trait expression profiles among populations. We found that anatomical leaf traits can be divided into four categories based on their similarity to parents: intermediate, parental‐like, transgressive and non‐significant. Contrary to the common view, parental‐like trait values were equally important in shaping the hybrid profile, as were intermediate traits. Transgression was revealed in 17/144 cases and concerned mainly cell and tissue sizes. As predicted by theory, we observed transgressive segregation more often when there was little phenotypic divergence, but intermediate values when parental traits were differentiated. It is likely that cell and tissue sizes are phylogenetically more conserved due to stabilising selection, whereas traits such as leaf thickness and volume fraction of the intercellular spaces, showing a consistent intermediate pattern across populations, are more susceptible to directional selection. Hybrid populations showed little similarity in expression profile, with only three traits identically expressed across all populations. Thus local adaptation of parental species and specific genetic background may be of importance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The fruits, seed coats and seed storage proteins of Onobrychis arenaria, O. montana, O. viciifolia, O. alba, O. supina and O. caput-galli were studied to examine the variability between and within species. The morphometric characteristics of the fruit had a high intraspecific variability which often exceeded that between species. Only the fruit of O. caput-galli had values for length, width, thickness and number of thorns which were almost always higher than those of the other species. The anatomical characteristics of the seed coats were extremely variable. The highest values of seed coat thickness were recorded in the diploid species. The palisade-like layer (or Malpighian cells) in O. caput-galli differed in size and morphology from that of the other species. The electrophoretic analysis revealed that the number and position of storage proteins varied between and within species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Leaf anatomy (light and transmission electron microscopy), immunogold localization of Rubisco, photosynthetic enzyme activities, CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance were studied in Vetiveria zizanioides Stapf., a graminaceous plant native to tropical and subtropical areas, and cultivated in temperate climates (Northwestern Italy). Leaves possess a NADP-ME Kranz anatomy with bundle sheath cells containing chloroplasts located in a centrifugal position. Dimorphic chloroplasts were also observed; they are agranal and starchy in the bundle sheath and granal starchless in the mesophyll cells. Rubisco immunolocalization studies indicate that this enzyme occurs solely in the bundle sheath chloroplasts. Pyruvate-orthophosphate dikinase, NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH), NADP-dependent malic enzyme (NADP-ME), PEP-carboxykinase and NAD-dependent malic enzyme (NAD-ME) activities were determined. Enzyme activity and some kinetic properties of NADP-ME and NADP-MDH as well as CO2 compensation point and stomatal conductance values were calculated indicating a NADP-ME C4 photosynthetic pathway. Biochemical and structural results indicate that V. zizanioides belongs to the C4 NADP-ME variant. This plant appears to be well adapted to the varying environmental conditions typical of temperate climates, by retaining high enzyme activities and a low CO2 compensation point.  相似文献

Modern humans are characterized by their large, complex, and specialized brain. Human brain evolution can be addressed through direct evidence provided by fossil hominid endocasts (i.e. paleoneurology), or through indirect evidence of extant species comparative neurology. Here we use the second approach, providing an extant comparative framework for hominid paleoneurological studies. We explore endocranial size and shape differences among great apes and humans, as well as between sexes. We virtually extracted 72 endocasts, sampling all extant great ape species and modern humans, and digitized 37 landmarks on each for 3D generalized Procrustes analysis. All species can be differentiated by their endocranial shape. Among great apes, endocranial shapes vary from short (orangutans) to long (gorillas), perhaps in relation to different facial orientations. Endocranial shape differences among African apes are partly allometric. Major endocranial traits distinguishing humans from great apes are endocranial globularity, reflecting neurological reorganization, and features linked to structural responses to posture and bipedal locomotion. Human endocasts are also characterized by posterior location of foramina rotunda relative to optic canals, which could be correlated to lesser subnasal prognathism compared to living great apes. Species with larger brains (gorillas and humans) display greater sexual dimorphism in endocranial size, while sexual dimorphism in endocranial shape is restricted to gorillas, differences between males and females being at least partly due to allometry. Our study of endocranial variations in extant great apes and humans provides a new comparative dataset for studies of fossil hominid endocasts.  相似文献

In men and women sexual arousal culminates in orgasm, with female orgasm solely from sexual intercourse often regarded as a unique feature of human sexuality. However, orgasm from sexual intercourse occurs more reliably in men than in women, likely reflecting the different types of physical stimulation men and women require for orgasm. In men, orgasms are under strong selective pressure as orgasms are coupled with ejaculation and thus contribute to male reproductive success. By contrast, women's orgasms in intercourse are highly variable and are under little selective pressure as they are not a reproductive necessity. The proximal mechanisms producing variability in women's orgasms are little understood. In 1924 Marie Bonaparte proposed that a shorter distance between a woman's clitoris and her urethral meatus (CUMD) increased her likelihood of experiencing orgasm in intercourse. She based this on her published data that were never statistically analyzed. In 1940 Landis and colleagues published similar data suggesting the same relationship, but these data too were never fully analyzed. We analyzed raw data from these two studies and found that both demonstrate a strong inverse relationship between CUMD and orgasm during intercourse. Unresolved is whether this increased likelihood of orgasm with shorter CUMD reflects increased penile–clitoral contact during sexual intercourse or increased penile stimulation of internal aspects of the clitoris. CUMD likely reflects prenatal androgen exposure, with higher androgen levels producing larger distances. Thus these results suggest that women exposed to lower levels of prenatal androgens are more likely to experience orgasm during sexual intercourse.  相似文献

In slow mainstream flows (<4–6 cm · s?1), the transport of dissolved nutrients to seaweed blade surfaces is reduced due to the formation of thicker diffusion boundary layers (DBLs). The blade morphology of Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh varies with the hydrodynamic environment in which it grows; wave‐exposed blades are narrow and thick with small surface corrugations (1 mm tall), whereas wave‐sheltered blades are wider and thinner with large (2–5 cm) edge undulations. Within the surface corrugations of wave‐exposed blades, the DBL thickness, measured using an O2 micro‐optode, ranged from 0.67 to 0.80 mm and did not vary with mainstream velocities between 0.8 and 4.5 cm · s?1. At the corrugation apex, DBL thickness decreased with increasing seawater velocity, from 0.4 mm at 0.8 cm · s?1 to being undetectable at 4.5 cm · s?1. Results show how the wave‐exposed blades trap fluid within the corrugations at their surface. For wave‐sheltered blades at 0.8 cm · s?1, a DBL thickness of 0.73 ± 0.31 mm within the edge undulation was 10‐fold greater than at the undulation apex, while at 2.1 cm · s?1, DBL thicknesses were similar at <0.07 mm. Relative turbulence intensity was measured using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), and overall, there was little evidence to support our hypothesis that the edge undulations of wave‐sheltered blades increased turbulence intensity compared to wave‐exposed blades. We discuss the positive and negative effects of thick DBLs at seaweed surfaces.  相似文献

The phylogenetic and taxonomic significance of morphological and anatomical trends in fruits of tribe Crotalarieae has been evaluated, with emphasis on the genus Crotalaria and its seemingly distinctive, inflated and balloon‐shaped pods. In addition to the normal explosive dehiscence as a means of dispersal, several genera (including Crotalaria) show independent evolution of modifications apparently adapted for dispersal by wind, water and gravity. Transverse sections were made of mature pods of 142 species from the 12 currently recognized genera of Crotalarieae. The taxa differ in the orientation of the fibres (related to dehiscence or non‐dehiscence), the overall thickness of the fruit wall, the relative proportions of the pericarp layers, the degree of lignification and the presence or absence of trichomes. Three basic pericarp types can be distinguished: type I, with one, two or three zones of various numbers of cell layers of fibres (almost all genera); type II, with a single cell layer of fibres (only in Rothia, Robynsiophyton, Lebeckia and Lotononis sections Listia and Leobordea); and type III, with one zone of several cell layers of gelatinous fibres and multicellular trichomes associated with the endocarp (only in some species of Calobota and Wiborgiella). The Cerithioidea is an ecologically important superfamily of basal Caenogastropoda with speciose marine, brackish water, and freshwater lineages primarily in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions of the world. They often represent significant components of the communities where they occur and have given rise to several spectacular endemic radiations in rivers and ancient lakes. Earlier attempts to resolve the phylogenetic history of the group have been based on smaller taxon and character subsets with incongruent results. Here the monophyly and phylogeny of the group is evaluated with expanded morphological and molecular (16S, 28S rRNA) data sets. For morphological analyses, 151 characters (shell, operculum, radula, alimentary tract, kidney, nervous system, reproductive anatomy, and sperm ultrastructure) were scored for 47 cerithioideans (representing 17 families) and nine outgroup taxa. To test monophyly of the Cerithioidea, extended molecular data sets of 16S and 28S sequences for 57 and 44 taxa, respectively, were compiled using new and previously published sources. For combined analyses, a pruned molecular data set was combined with the morphological partition. The morphological data were analysed alone using only parsimony; molecular and simultaneous analyses were performed using both parsimony and Bayesian inference. The effect of excluding unconserved regions of the alignments was also explored. All analyses, with the exception of the individual 16S and 28S data sets, support monophyly of the Cerithioidea as currently formulated. Of the 12 families represented by more than one terminal, only two (Planaxidae, Potamididae) are always supported as monophyletic; Batillariidae, Cerithiidae, Pachychilidae, Pleuroceridae, Semisulcospiridae, Thiaridae, and Turritellidae are monophyletic in most but not all topologies. The combination of diverse data sources (morphology, 16S and 28S sequences) and inclusion of unconserved regions of the alignments improved the recovery of monophyletic families. At deeper levels, a consensus is beginning to emerge in the recognition of three main assemblages, but whether these represent clades or grades is still unclear; the resolution of these assemblages and the branching order within them are sensitive to exclusion of unconserved regions and choice of optimality criterion. No clear conclusion is reached with respect to the number of freshwater invasions, with two invasions supported on some topologies and three supported on others. Progress toward a robust and stable resolution of cerithioidean relationships will require (1) strategically coordinated sampling for additional morphological and molecular data; (2) comprehensive anatomical treatments for several poorly documented limnic lineages (e.g. Melanopsidae, Thiaridae) and comparative data for poorly understood organ systems (e.g. renal system); (3) the addition of poorly known, minute, and/or rare marine taxa, to provide novel character combinations, insight into putative homologies, and to help anchor basal nodes and break up long branches. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 162 , 43–89.  相似文献
