Intramandibular joints (IMJ) are novel articulations between bony elements of the lower jaw that have evolved independently in multiple fish lineages and are typically associated with biting herbivory. This novel joint is hypothesized to function by augmenting oral jaw expansion during mouth opening, which would increase contact between the tooth‐bearing area of the jaws and algal substratum during feeding, resulting in more effective food removal from the substrate. Currently, it is not understood if increased flexibility in a double‐jointed mandible also results in increased force generation during herbivorous biting and/or scraping. Therefore, we selected the herbivore Girella laevifrons for a mechanical study of the IMJ lower jaw lever system. For comparative purposes, we selected Graus nigra, a non–IMJ‐bearing species, from a putative sister genus. Shortening of the lower jaw, during flexion at the IMJ, resulted in a more strongly force‐amplifying closing lever system in the lower jaw, even in the absence of notable changes to the sizes of the muscles that power the lever system. To explain how the IMJ itself functions, we use a four‐bar linkage that models the transmission of force and velocity to and through the lower jaw via the IMJ. When combined, the functionally interrelated lever and linkage models predict velocity to be amplified during jaw opening, whereas jaw closing is highly force modified by the presence of the IMJ. Moreover, the function of the IMJ late during jaw closure provides enough velocity to detach sturdy and resilient prey. Thus, this novel jaw system can alternate between amplifying the force or the velocity exerted onto the substrate where food items are attached. This unique mechanical configuration supports the argument that IMJs are functional innovations that have evolved to meet novel mechanical challenges and constraints placed on the feeding apparatus by attached and sturdy food sources. We reared six idiobiont braconids, Bracon asphondyliae, B. sunosei, B. tamabae, Simplicibracon curticaudis, Testudobracon longicaudis and T. pleuralis from 22 identified species and 11 unidentified segregates of Asphondyliini (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Japan. A total of 22 cecidomyiid species and segregates were newly recorded as hosts of the braconids. Analysis of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) did not show any evidence of host races among the braconids. Bracon sunosei, which was synonymized with B. asphondyliae, is restored to a valid species. The host range of the braconid species seemed to be related to the lineage of host genera within Asphondyliini.  相似文献

1 Infestation by the blackcurrant leaf midge Dasineura tetensi and galling incidence on a susceptible (cv. ‘Öjebyn’) and a moderately resistant (cv. ‘Storklas’) blackcurrant genotype was studied in the field for two midge generations in the same growing season. On the resistant genotype gall initiation is delayed. 2 The relation between infestation and galling incidence showed considerable variation between the two generations. Galling symptoms produced by the second midge generation were weak on the resistant as compared with the susceptible blackcurrant. 3 Because larval development of that generation coincided with a period of dry and warm weather, it is possible that larvae on the resistant genotype suffered desiccation to a greater extent than larvae on the susceptible genotype where gall development was stronger. 4 The possible interaction of relative humidity and expression of resistance was investigated in controlled environment experiments. The resistant ‘Storklas’ and a susceptible (‘7801–31’) currant genotype were studied at two constant relative humidities, 30 and 70%. 5 Larvae of D. tetensi suffered from higher mortality and reduced growth rate on both genotypes in the low humidity environment. 6 There was also a significant plant genotype by humidity interaction on larval performance; no galls were produced and no larvae completed development on the resistant currant at low humidity. 7 There was a trend for a positive correlation between larval length and larval density on a plant at low humidity but not at high humidity.  相似文献

Biting midges of the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are insect vectors of economically important veterinary diseases such as African horse sickness virus and bluetongue virus. However, the identification of Culicoides based on morphological features is difficult. The sequencing of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), referred to as DNA barcoding, has been proposed as a tool for rapid identification to species. Hence, a study was undertaken to establish DNA barcodes for all morphologically determined Culicoides species in Swedish collections. In total, 237 specimens of Culicoides representing 37 morphologically distinct species were used. The barcoding generated 37 supported clusters, 31 of which were in agreement with the morphological determination. However, two pairs of closely related species could not be separated using the DNA barcode approach. Moreover, Culicoides obsoletus Meigen and Culicoides newsteadi Austen showed relatively deep intraspecific divergence (more than 10 times the average), which led to the creation of two cryptic species within each of C. obsoletus and C. newsteadi. The use of COI barcodes as a tool for the species identification of biting midges can differentiate 95% of species studied. Identification of some closely related species should employ a less conserved region, such as a ribosomal internal transcribed spacer.  相似文献

Biting densities of the Simulium damnosum Theobald complex of blackflies and their levels of parasitism by Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) were compared at two ecologically contrasted sites in the Southern Province of Sierre Leone, West Africa: by the Tabe riverside close to Gbaiima village where onchocerciasis is hyperendemic (63.1% positive skin-snips) and in open rice fields 2 km from the mesoendemic (54.9%) village of Senehun. Using a combination of morphometric and enzyme electrophoresis techniques, the primary vector was found to belong to the S.sanctipauli subcomplex and was most probably S.soubrense 'B' (sensu Post, 1986). In the wet season biting activity took place throughout the day at the village, but had morning and evening peaks in the rice fields. Transmission of O.volvulus was detected at the village in all months except February-April, while in the rice fields it was detected only during September-November and May at one tenth the level of the village. There was a significant difference between the two sites in the proportion of parous flies carrying third stage larvae in the head, but not of other larval stages.  相似文献

In a controlled field trial, a mechanical vacuum and a mouth aspirator were compared with respect to Culicoides midge catching results. The two collection methods were equally applied to two Haflinger horses. Once every hour between 2 hr before sunset and sunset, midges were aspirated for 3 min directly off from the coat of each horse at the same time. In total, 16 replicate measurement days were made. To get insight into the number of (blood‐fed) midges collected on different body parts, four replicate measurement days were done in which the hourly 3‐min samples for each collecting method were separately collected and counted per body part. Mean number of Culicoides midges collected on the legs and on the belly of the horse was two times and significantly higher by the mechanical vacuum aspirator compared to the mouth aspirator. Although the mean number of Culicoides midges from the other part of the host sampled (head/neck/manes/back/flanks) was comparable between the two methods, the mean number of blood‐fed Culicoides midges was four times and significantly higher collected by the mouth aspirator compared to the mechanical vacuum aspirator. In conclusion, it can be recommended to use a mechanical vacuum aspirator instead of a mouth aspirator for the legs and belly area, where a systematic, stroke‐by‐stroke‐vacuum procedure is recommended. For the rest of the body, it is strongly recommended to use a targeted procedure by visual guidance of the presence of midges. For now, based on this experiment, we can only recommend using the mouth aspirator for this targeted approach. However, it might be worth assessing the use of the mechanical vacuum aspirator in a targeted way for future studies.  相似文献

Tryptophan hydroxylase‐2 (TPH2) synthesizes neuronal serotonin and is linked to numerous behavioral traits. We have previously characterized the functionality of polymorphisms (especially 2051A>C) in 3’‐untranslated region (3’‐UTR) of rhesus monkey TPH2 (rhTPH2). This study further assessed the functionality of additional polymorphisms (–1605T>C, –1491Tn, –1485(AT)n, –1454A>G, –1325In>Del and –363T>G) in rhTPH2 5’‐flanking region (5’‐FR), and evaluated the effects of rhTPH2 5’ and 3’ genotypes on central serotonin turnover, hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis function and self‐injurious behavior (SIB) in 32 unrelated adult male monkeys of Indian origin. Haplotypes of the rhTPH2 5’‐FR polymorphisms exert a significant, cell‐dependent effect on reporter gene expression, primarily conferred by –1485(AT)n. The –1485(AT)n and 2051A>C polymorphisms interact to influence cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) 5‐HIAA and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the afternoon. While –1485(AT)n exerts significant main effects on the afternoon cortisol level and nocturnal HPA negative feedback, 2051A>C has significant main effects on the morning cortisol level and cortisol response to ACTH challenge, as well as marginally significant main effects on the daytime HPA negative feedback and self‐biting rate. In addition, the genotype/allele frequency of the 5’‐FR –1325Ins>Del differed significantly between the self‐wounders and non‐wounders, whereas 3’‐UTR 2128S>L polymorphism differed significantly in genotype/allele frequency between the high‐ and low‐frequency biters. This study shows the functionality of rhTPH2 5’‐FR polymorphisms, and provides evidence for the differential association of rhTPH2 5’‐FR and 3’‐UTR polymorphisms with HPA axis function and SIB. Our findings shed light on the role of TPH2 gene variance in physiology and behavioral traits, and also contribute to the understanding of the pathophysiology and genetics of SIB  相似文献

近年来 ,国内已有 1 0余个省区城市供水系统中先后发生了摇蚊幼虫 (红虫 )污染事件。文章介绍了国内外供水系统摇蚊发生概况 ;分析了供水系统中摇蚊发生的 3个主要原因 :原水环境污染 ,水处理过程摇蚊污染和二次供水污染。简要回顾了国外供水系统摇蚊污染防除的历史和进展 ;重点介绍了目前国内供水行业所采用物理、化学以及生物的方法在水厂净水处理及二次供水过程防除摇蚊污染的研究 ;同时指出了当前有关研究和实践中存在的主要问题是对摇蚊生物学和生态学等知识的缺乏。对该问题开展进一步研究提出了建议  相似文献
