On the southwest Pacific Coast of Colombia, a field study was initiated to determine the human-vector association between Anopheles (Kerteszia) neivai and fishermen, including their nearby houses. Mosquitoes were collected over 24-h periods from mangrove swamps, marshlands and fishing vessels in three locations, as well as in and around the houses of fishermen. A total of 6,382 mosquitoes were collected. An. neivai was most abundant in mangroves and fishing canoes (90.8%), while Anopheles albimanus was found indoors (82%) and outdoors (73%). One An. neivai and one An. albimanus collected during fishing activities in canoes were positive for Plasmodium vivax , whereas one female An. neivai collected in a mangrove was positive for P. vivax . In the mangroves and fishing canoes, An. neivai demonstrated biting activity throughout the day, peaking between 06:00 pm-07:00 pm and there were two minor peaks at dusk and dawn. These peaks coincided with fishing activities in the marshlands and mangroves, a situation that places the fishermen at risk of contracting malaria when they are performing their daily activities. It is recommended that protective measures be implemented to reduce the risk that fishermen will contract malaria.  相似文献

Abstract

A platygastrid wasp that feeds on the snow tussock flower midge in the inflorescences of New Zealand snow tussock grasses (Chionochloa spp.) is formally described. Zelostemma chionochloae is a specialist natural enemy of Eucalyptodiplosis chionochloae Kolesik which is the most ubiquitous and sophisticated seed predator of Chionochloa. Z. chionochloae is a koinobiont parasitoid and some larvae enter prolonged diapause inside their host for at least 2 years. Methods for adult rearing are described. The phenology of Z. chionochloae is highly synchronised with its host even after 2 years in diapause. Parasitism levels were found to differ between years and elevations, while sex ratios differed among years. Z chionochloae probably suffers inter‐specific competition with another host‐specific hymenopteran parasitoid (Gastrancistrus sp.) which also parasitises E. chionochloae.  相似文献

In French Guiana, Anopheles darlingi is considered the main malaria vector. However, several reports have hypothesized the implication of other anopheline species in malaria transmission for the territory. Data on the ecology of these other potential vectors is rare or even unexplored in French Guiana. The aim of this study was to describe the biting habits of several anopheline species in multiple localities in French Guiana. Six sampling sites yielded 1,083 anopheline adults. Results indicated the presence of An. darlingi in all study locations and it was the only species to be collected inside villages. Other anophelines collected included An. aquasalis, An. braziliensis, An. intermedius, An. mediopunctatus, An. nuneztovari, An. oswaldoi, and An. triannulatus, all of which were associated with open areas and forests. The environment and time, at which biting behavior was recorded, varied for each species. It was noted that An. oswaldoi showed a daytime rhythm in open areas. This study is the first to report on the biting habits of a range of anophelines in French Guiana that may play a role in malaria transmission. This information is vital to fully describe the risk of malaria transmission and thereby design appropriate vector control measures and malaria prevention programs.  相似文献

In this study, we designed a new tent trap; the BioDiVector (BDV) tent trap, consisting of two rectangular tents that use human bait without endangering the technical personnel. The daily activity pattern of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in intra, peri, and extradomiciliary sites was studied in an endemic area of dengue in southern Mexico by using the BDV tent trap. Totals of 3,128 individuals of Ae. aegypti and 833 Ae. albopictus were captured. More Ae. aegypti males than females were caught, while the opposite was true with Ae. albopictus. The activity of both mosquito species was affected by the interaction between the collection site and time of day. In general, more individuals of both mosquito species were captured at the extradomicillary sites than at the peri and intradomicillary sites. Mosquitoes showed two peaks of activity, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, but in general this only occurred at the extradomicillary sites, whereas no peak of activity was observed at the intra and peridomicillary sites. Overall, Ae. aegypti had a higher indirect biting rate than Ae. albopictus. Finally, due to its efficiency, simplicity, and low cost, we suggest the use of this innovative tool for entomological surveillance, bionomics and vector incrimination studies in geographical areas where dengue and other arboviruses are present.  相似文献

The first autochthonous Leishmania infection in Australia was reported by Rose et al. (2004) and the parasite was characterised as a unique species. The host was the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) but the transmitting vector was unknown. To incriminate the biological vector, insect trapping by a variety of methods was undertaken at two field sites of known Leishmania transmission. Collected sand flies were identified to species level and were screened for Leishmania DNA using a semi-quantitative real-time PCR. Collections revealed four species of sand fly, with a predominance of the reptile biter Sergentomyia queenslandi (Hill). However, no Leishmania-positive flies were detected. Therefore, alternative vectors were investigated for infection, giving startling results. Screening revealed that an undescribed species of day-feeding midge, subgenus Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea) Kieffer, had a prevalence of up to 15% for Leishmania DNA, with high parasitemia in some individuals. Manual gut dissections confirmed the presence of promastigotes and in some midges material similar to promastigote secretory gel, including parasites with metacyclic-like morphology. Parasites were cultured from infected midges and sequence analysis of the Leishmania RNA polymerase subunit II gene confirmed infections were identical to the original isolated Leishmania sp. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the closest known species to be Leishmania enriettii, with this and the Australian species confirmed as members of Leishmania sensu stricto. Collectively the results strongly suggest that the day-feeding midge (F. (Lasiohelea) sp. 1) is a potential biological vector of Leishmania in northern Australia, which is to our knowledge the first evidence of a vector other than a phlebotomine sand fly anywhere in the world. These findings have considerable implications in the understanding of the Leishmania life cycle worldwide.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the preference and performance of a gall‐inducing midge (Harmandia tremulae) within the crown of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides). Females did not select oviposition sites preferentially within leaves, but did lay preferentially on young leaves. 2. Larvae were the only life stage involved in gall site selection within leaves and in gall initiation and development. Gall size, which was positively related to survival, was highest for galls on mid veins that were located close to the petiole. However, one‐third of galls were located on lateral veins and most galls were not adjacent to the petiole, indicating that many larvae choose sub‐optimal gall initiation sites. 3. Gall density was positively associated with leaf length, and leaf length, was positively associated with gall size. However, gall density per leaf was not related to larval survival in galls. This latter result may be a result of an observed inverse relationship between gall size and gall density for similar‐sized leaves. 4. The results partially support the plant vigour and optimal plant module size hypotheses, which predict that galler fitness in successfully induced galls should be highest on large, fast‐growing plant modules. The lack of a strong preference‐performance link supports the confusion hypothesis, which predicts that oviposition and gall site selection may often be suboptimal in systems where galler lifespan is short. This study suggests that small‐scale variations in plant quality within leaves, can render gall site selection by juveniles as important as that previously reported for adult females.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Three populations of the yew gall midge, Taxomyia taxi, and its two chalcid parasitoids, Mesopolobus diffinis and Torymus nigritarsus, from Kingley Vale, West Sussex, U.K., were monitored each year between 1966 and 2002. Taxomyia taxi's life cycles are either hemivoltine or univoltine and the parasitoids' are univoltine (T. nigritarsus) or multivoltine (M. diffinis). 2. Growth of the host trees, yew Taxus baccata, each year between 1950 and 1997 was assessed by width of annual rings in cores taken in 1998. Temperature and rainfall data were provided by the weather station in Southampton, representative of the climate of central southern England. 3. Time‐series analyses were conducted to explore the effects of climate, tree growth, and parasitoids on each T. taxi population and on the three populations combined. Four time‐delayed models were developed: for hemivoltine and univoltine T. taxi and for each of the parasitoids. 4. Hemivoltine T. taxi populations showed troughs in density in the periods 1972–1975 and 1991–1992, which were more pronounced in even than odd years; these were closely tracked by M. diffinis and followed, after a delay, by T. nigritarsus. Time‐series models showed that, for T. taxi, its current density depended on the density of its hemivoltine parents moderated by the negative effects of T. nigritarsus on these parents. In reciprocal fashion, T. nigritarsus density was influenced by that of its hemivoltine host as well as by its own previous density. Host and parasitoid appear to participate in a coupled interaction that regulates the populations of both via delayed density dependence, resulting in cycles of at least 14 years. Mesopolobus diffinis had no effect on the dynamics of hemivoltine T. taxi, most of which escaped its parasitism. Although univoltine T. taxi can give rise to hemivoltine offspring, there was no evidence that they affected hemivoltine dynamics. 5. The density of univoltine T. taxi was usually much lower than hemivoltine density and varied irregularly over time. It was not attacked by T. nigritarsus but parasitism by M. diffinis was always high. Despite this, its density depended only on the density of its parents, especially the hemivoltine parents. Parasitism had no effect on the dynamics of univoltine T. taxi. Conversely, M. diffinis density depended solely on the densities of both univoltine and hemivoltine hosts. 6. Tree growth appeared to have little effect on the dynamics of the host or parasitoids and there was no evidence that gall density had any effect on growth of the tree. The primary effect of climate appeared to be in maintaining the cyclic nature of the T. taxi–T. nigritarsus interaction. If stochastic weather variables are removed from the models, the oscillations are of equivalent periodicity but dampen to equilibrium.  相似文献

The BTBR T+tf/J inbred mouse strain displays a variety of persistent phenotypic alterations similar to those exhibited in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The unique genetic background of the BTBR strain is thought to underlie its lack of reciprocal social interactions, elevated repetitive self-directed grooming, and restricted exploratory behaviors. In order to clarify the existence, range, and mechanisms of abnormal repetitive behaviors within BTBR mice, we performed detailed analyses of the microstructure of self-grooming patterns and noted increased overall grooming, higher percentages of interruptions in grooming bouts and a concomitant decrease in the proportion of incorrect sequence transitions compared to C57BL/6J inbred mice. Analyses of active phase home-cage behavior also revealed an increase in stereotypic bar-biting behavior in the BTBR strain relative to B6 mice. Finally, in a novel object investigation task, the BTBR mice exhibited greater baseline preference for specific unfamiliar objects as well as more patterned sequences of sequential investigations of those items. These results suggest that the repetitive, stereotyped behavior patterns of BTBR mice are relatively pervasive and reflect both motor and cognitive mechanisms. Furthermore, other pre-clinical mouse models of ASDs may benefit from these more detailed analyses of stereotypic behavior.  相似文献

Morii T., Matsui T., Iijima T. and Fiotnaoa F. 1984. Infectivity of Leucocytozoon caulleryi sporozoites developed in vitro and in vivo. International Journal for Parasitology14: 135–139. Infectivity of Leucocytozoon caulleryi sporozoites isolated from various sites in Culicoides arakawae and from the midguts and the salivary glands which had been cultured in vitro after the infective blood meals was studied. Sporozoites isolated from the midguts, the abdominal and thoracic hemocoel and the salivary glands of biting midges on the 2nd day after feeding did not show infectivity to any of the chickens inoculated. Sporozoites obtained from the salivary glands on the 3rd day after feeding caused infection in all the inoculated chickens. The results indicated that sporozoites which had been just released from oocysts or had just reached the salivary glands cannot induce infection in chickens. Sporozoites were produced in the midguts which had been cultured in vitro in Medium 199 or Grace's medium after the infective blood meals, but they showed lower infectivity than those isolated from the salivary glands which had been cultured by the same methods as the midgut cultivation. The development of infectivity of L. caulleryi sporozoites seems to be site-dependent rather than time-dependent. High infectivity of sporozoites develops during their residence in the salivary glands of biting midges.
