The aims of this study were to evaluate four preventive measures and two curative treatments of tail biting. The preventive measures were: chain, rubber hose, straw rack (5 g/pig/day) and the provision of straw on the floor twice daily by hand (2 × 10 g/pig/day). The two curative treatments, which were applied following the onset of tail biting in a pen were: straw twice daily (as in the fourth preventive measure) and the removal of the biter. In total, 960 undocked weaned piglets (10 piglets per pen) were observed during 5 weeks. Tail lesions (none, bite marks and wounds) were recorded daily. The incidence of pens with wounded pig tails was significantly lower when straw was provided twice daily (8% of pens) compared to the chain (58% of pens) and rubber hose (54% of pens) treatment, but did not differ significantly from the straw rack treatment (29% of pens). Tails with bite marks were significantly less common in pens with twice daily straw (16% of pens) compared to chain (88% of pens), rubber hose (79% of pens) and straw rack (75% of pens). No significant difference was found between the curative treatments. Both treatments showed a reduced incidence of red fresh blood on the tails at days 1–9 following curative treatment, compared to day 0. However, neither curative treatment eliminated tail biting entirely. In conclusion, this study indicates that tail biting is best prevented with a small amount of straw, provided twice daily, and to a lesser extent with a straw rack, compared to providing a chain or a rubber hose. A cool-temperate fly, Drosophila triauraria, stores fat, triacylglycerol (TAG), primarily in the fat storage organ, the fat body, and then diapauses to pass the winter in imago stage. TAG crystallization and ice formation taking place in a living fly by lowering temperatures were studied, in order to clarify the relationship between crystallizations and the fly’s death at lower temperatures. X-ray diffraction, a direct non-invasive method, was used to detect the liquid-to-crystal transformations of TAG and water. During cooling, TAG crystallization preceded ice formation. Although coevolution is widely accepted as a concept, its importance as a driving factor in biological diversification is still being debated. Because coevolution operates mainly at the population level, reciprocal coadaptations should result in trait covariation among populations of strongly interacting species. A long-tongued fly ( Prosoeca ganglbaueri ) and its primary floral food plant ( Zaluzianskya microsiphon ) were studied across both of their geographical ranges. The dimensions of the fly's proboscis and the flower's corolla tube length varied significantly among sites and were strongly correlated with each other. In addition, the match between tube length of flowers and tongue length of flies was found to affect plant fitness. The relationship between flower tube length and fly proboscis length remained significant in models that included various alternative environmental (altitude, longitude, latitude) and allometric (fly body size, flower diameter) predictor variables. We conclude that coevolution is a compelling explanation for the geographical covariation in flower depth and fly proboscis length. 相似文献

The great barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, is a voracious marine predator that captures fish with a swift ram feeding strike. While aspects of its ram feeding kinematics have been examined, an unexamined aspect of their feeding strategy is the bite mechanism used to process prey. Barracuda can attack fish larger than the gape of their jaws, and in order to swallow large prey, can sever their prey into pieces with powerful jaws replete with sharp cutting teeth. Our study examines the functional morphology and biomechanics of 'ram-biting' behavior in great barracuda where the posterior portions of the oral jaws are used to slice through prey. Using fresh fish and preserved museum specimens, we examined the jaw mechanism of an ontogenetic series of barracuda ranging from 20 g to 8.2 kg. Jaw functional morphology was described from dissections of fresh specimens and bite mechanics were determined from jaw morphometrics using the software MandibLever (v3.2). High-speed video of barracuda biting (1500 framess(-1)) revealed that prey are impacted at the corner of the mouth during capture in an orthogonal position where rapid repeated bites and short lateral headshakes result in cutting the prey in two. Predicted dynamic force output of the lower jaw nearly doubles from the tip to the corner of the mouth reaching as high as 58 N in large individuals. A robust palatine bone embedded with large dagger-like teeth opposes the mandible at the rear of the jaws providing for a scissor-like bite capable of shearing through the flesh and bone of its prey. 相似文献

Population dynamics of Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel (Diptera: Tephritidae) were studied through pheromone trapping over 4 years (1997, 1999, 2000, 2003) in the Kunming region, a high plateau area in southwestern China. B. dorsalis immigrates from southern Yunnan to Kunming each year, and occurs during early May through November. Annual trap captures recorded an increase in the B. dorsalis populations from May to July, when they peaked in abundance, and a decline until November. No flies were detected from November to April. The fruit flies had two generations. There was considerable overlapping due to the continuous arrival of immigrating flies during the summer months. Annual capture rates were significantly related to numbers of flies caught in July when peak captures were recorded; whereas the peak captures, in turn, positively depended on numbers of flies recorded in May, the first month of fly appearance in the current year. It suggested that the annual population abundance was mainly dependent on the size of the initial emigrating population. A daily average temperature of 18℃ was probably the threshold temperature required for the flies to undertake long-range dispersal, which partially explained the start of the fly in May each year on this high plateau. Under field conditions, the fruit flies can withstand 13℃ as a daily average temperature. No flies were recorded in any of the study years at a daily temperature colder than 10 ℃. 相似文献

Epidemiological studies of workers in the nickel industry, animal exposure studies, and reports on the potential mechanisms of nickel-induced toxicity and carcinogenicity indicate that only crystalline sulfidic nickel compounds have been clearly established as carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic in humans. This observation indicates the need to modify and update regulatory approaches for nickel to reflect noncancer toxicity values for some individual nickel species. Analysis of nickel compounds in residual oil fly ash (ROFA) indicates that sulfidic nickel compounds (e.g., nickel subsulfide, nickel sulfide) are not present. Thus, the potential for emission of carcinogenic nickel compounds from residual oil fly ash appears to be low. Preliminary reference concentrations (RfCs) for a number of nickel compounds, based on non-carcinogenic endpoints, are proposed on the basis of the benchmark dose approach in conjunction with NTP data for nickel species. 相似文献

Culicinomyces clavisporus, a fungal pathogen of a wide range of mosquito species, was investigated in relation to potential pathogenicity against Culicoides nubeculosus biting midge larvae. Seven different C. clavisporus strains were assayed. Each showed some degree of activity against C. nubeculosus larvae with LC50 values of between 3.2×10-5 and 1.1×10-6 spores/mL; these effects occurred in dose-dependent manners and tended to be delayed until 72-96 h post treatment. The development times and survival of immature stages in rockwool and the fecundity and longevity of adult Scatella stagnalis were determined and stage-specific life-tables constructed for the species at constant 20 and 25 °C and at a fluctuating temperature (23–34 °C, mean 28.5 °C). Development time from egg to adult decreased with temperature, being 15.9±0.1 days at 20 °C, 11.4±0.1 days at 25 °C and 10.1±0.2 days at fluctuating temperature with mean of 28.5 °C. The lower threshold for egg-to-adult development was 6.4±2.7 °C and the total quantity of thermal energy required to complete development was 212.8±.0 °C. The proportion of females in two populations studied was 0.521. High temperature increased the mortality of pupae from 7% (20 °C) and 10% (25 °C) to 29% at 28.5 °C. At 25 °C, female longevity was 15.5±0.7 days and fecundity 315±19 eggs/female (20.4 eggs/female/day). Males lived for 22.0±1.1 days. At constant 25 °C, the net reproductive rate was 126.1 female eggs/female, generation time was 18.4 days, the doubling time of the population 5.3 days, and the intrinsic rate of increase (r

Colour is one of several stimuli used by herbivorous insects in host choice. Insects have between 2 and 5 different types of photoreceptors to catch quanta of different wavelengths of the spectrum. Many insects have been shown to possess opponent neural interactions between the receptors that enable them to see colour. I present simple models to describe colour choices as functions of the receptor quantum catches and linear interactions of the receptor types. Models are applied to data sets obtained from own experiments and from the literature, on Pieris brassicae and P. rapae (Lepidoptera, Pieridae), Papilio aegeus (Papilionidae), Dacus oleae (Diptera, Tephritidae) and Eristalis tenax (Syrphidae). In fruit flies, detection of green fruit is based on an inhibitory interaction between a green-sensitive receptor type and a blue-sensitive receptor type. This might explain the preference many herbivorous insects have for yellow over green stimuli. Pollen feeding in hoverflies might have evolved from yellow pollen being a super-normal stimulus for herbivorous insects. In butterflies, an additional red-receptor is involved in the colour choice for an oviposition substratum and leads to them choosing green and not yellow. The models introduced in this study open new perspective for a physiological understanding of the design of visual stimuli for monitoring and trapping pest insects. 相似文献

For registering data on the in situexpression of segmentation genes, a method of image registration was developed basing on the spline approximation. The reference points for the registration were the coordinates of extrema in one-dimensional patterns of gene expression. This registration method is characterized by a very high accuracy. A method of creating a generalized pattern of gene expression in single cells is proposed. Such patterns were constructed for nine segmentation genes belonging to the gap and pair-rule classes of genes. 相似文献
