ABSTRACT. Free-flying, wild Glossina pallidipes Aust. and G. morsitans Westw. were video-recorded in the field in Zimbabwe as they flew out of air permeated with host odour (camera 2.5 m up, looking down at the ground). Analysis of the flight tracks supports the proposal of Bursell (1984) that tsetse flies attracted to an invisible source of host odour respond weakly if at all to wind direction while in flight: on losing contact with the odour the flies made a sharp turn that was uncorrelated with wind direction. The size of the turn varied considerably, with a marked discontinuity in the log-survivorship curve at 120° (a fly which had turned through at least 120° was 5 times as likely to stop the turn as a fly which had turned <120°). Over half the flies made turns of >90° (and <2 m diameter) within the 2×2.5 m field of view of the camera. It is suggested that these turns initially served to arrest the upwind progress of the fly, with the size of the turn determining the degree to which the fly backtracked towards where it last detected odour or continues cross-wind. Mean flight speed was c. 5 ms-1 (min. 2.5, max. probably 7ms-1).  相似文献

Ecdysteroid levels in larvae and pupae of Anastrepha suspensa (Diptera: Tephritidae) were measured by radioimmunoassay. These levels were correlated with histological changes throughout the development of the post-embryonic stages. Ecdysteroid levels increase rapidly throughout the last-larval instar and on the last day of this stage are 283 pg equivalents of 20-hydroxyecdysone per insect (14.5 ng/g) when wandering behaviour is initiated. At the end of this period the puparium is formed and within 24 h, the ecdysteroid rises to its highest peak (625 pg equivalents of 20-hydroxyecdysone/insect). Larval-pupal apolysis is initiated within 24 h later and the pupal cuticle is then secreted. Two days later, the ecdysteroids reach their lowest levels (75 pg equivalents of 20-hydroxyecdysone/insect or 0.6 ng/g) and most of the larval fat body and other tissues have been histolysed. In 5- to 10-day old pupae ecdysteroid levels again increase and remain relatively high throughout. During this period the larval epidermis is replaced by imaginal epidermis, imaginal discs begin to proliferate and the adult cuticle is secreted. Ecdysteroid levels finally fall 2 days prior to adult emergence. HPLC determinations indicate that 20-hydroxyecdysone is the predominant free ecdysteroid, and along with ecdysone, is readily detectable in all postembryonic stages of this species. An unusually high and unexplained peak of 20-hydroxyecdysone occurs in the pharate adult. This peak probably consists of ecdysone metabolites with retentions similar to that of 20-hydroxyecdysone and to which the antiserum is sensitive.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Emergence of cabbage root fly, Delia radicum (L.), from overwintering populations of puparia collected from twenty-one sites in south-west Lancashire, was extremely variable.
  • 2 The patterns of emergence indicated that there were two extreme biotypes, one with early- and the other with late-emerging flies. There was also evidence of an intermediate biotype, tending more to early than to late emergence.
  • 3 This gradient of biotypes, or clinal divergence, was maintained by populations breeding at different times and by females mating close to their sites of emergence. Non-dispersive females then perpetuated their genotype within their own locality.
  • 4 The time of emergence was not obviously associated with the type of host-crop on which larvae had developed.
  • 5 The late-emerging biotype was most prevalent around Halsall. The minimum distance between populations of the late- and the early-emerging biotypes was 16 km. 20 km south-east from Halsall only half of the fly population was early-emerging, possibly a result of a displacement of the Halsall biotype by the prevailing NW wind.
  • 6 Regional-based forecasts will need to take into account the emergence characteristics of the populations to predict the peak periods of cabbage root fly activity adequately in south-west Lancashire and other areas where emergence patterns differ.

Changes, during the reproductive cycle, in fat body, hemolymph, and ovarian proteins of the stable fly Stomoxys calcitrans were characterized quantitatively and qualitatively using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Protein content of all three tissues increased after blood feeding. Fat body protein increased first, followed by hemolymph and ovarian proteins. SDS-PAGE failed to identify vitellogenin in both female hemolymph and fat body samples. No single protein or group of proteins predominated at any stage of the reproductive cycle. Comparisons between male and female stable fly hemolymph and fat body proteins failed to detect female-specific proteins. Female-specific proteins, however, were detected in the hemolymph of four other species of Diptera.  相似文献

The various diapause and post-diapause stages entered by cabbage root fly pupae during the overwintering period are shown schematically. Although diapause induction started in mid-Aug., the early-pupating insects did not develop further but were maintained in diapause by the warm autumn temperatures. Therefore, diapause development was simultaneous in all Wellesbourne pupae, whether of second or third generation origin. Diapause development started only in mid-Oct., when mean soil temperatures fell below 10°. In the field, 90% of the overwintering population of cabbage root fly pupae had completed pleted diapause by 5 March 1980, 17 Feb. 1981 and 18 Feb. 1982. This was equivalent to a duration of 19 weeks from mid-Oct. onwards, during the winters of 1979–80, 1980–81 and 1981–82 respectively. A further break between the completion of diapause and the warm conditions required to start post-diapause development also helps to condense the emergence of flies in the spring. Hence, an accurate forecast of the time of spring attack by populations of flies similar to those at Wellesbourne should be possible. This study was financed partly by the Commission of the European Communities as CEC Contract No. 0771.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of nitrogen anaesthesia and cycloheximide injection on memory of the classically-conditioned fly, Phormia. 1 M NaCl solution was given to each fly as a conditioning stimulus and 0.5 M sucrose solution was the unconditioned stimulus that induced the proboscis extension response. The training period was as short as 2 min and testing was usually carried out 2 hr later. At varying times (0–60 min) between training and testing, flies were anaesthetized with nitrogen gas for 25 sec. When flies were anaesthetized immediately after training the effect of nitrogen gas was the greatest and few flies showed any conditioned response, but the sensitivity of memory to nitrogen gas declined as the interval between training and nitrogen treatment became longer, and such treatment had no effect on memory when the interval was longer than 30 min. The effect on memory of cycloheximide, an inhibitor of peptide bond synthesis, was also investigated. The injection of cycloheximide (0.37 μg) immediately after training diminished the memory, but when given 1 hr after training it had no effect on memory. These results show that the memory in Phormia has two phases, stable and an unstable phase, like long-term and short-term memory in vertebrates.  相似文献

This study investigates the behavioural and neural mechanisms involved in the oviposition behaviour of the turnip root fly,Delia floralis (Fallen). Behavioural studies showed that glucosinolates modulated the oviposition behaviour of the flies on artificial leaves as well as the number of eggs laid in the soil at the base of these leaves. Electrophysiological responses to glucosinolates were obtained from type A and type D sensilla on the prothoracic and mesothoracic tarsi, as well as from the long contact sensilla on the labellum. The neural responses from these sensilla were positively correlated with the oviposition behaviour of the flies and with the number of eggs laid. Of the eleven glucosinolates tested in the behavioural and electrophysiological tests, the flies were most responsive to glucobrassicanapin, gluconapin and glucobrassicin. The type D tarsal sensilla were more responsive to the glucosinolates than either the type A tarsal sensilla or the labellar sensilla. The structure-activity investigations showed that slight modifications to the chemical composition of the glucosinolates resulted in changes in neural activity.  相似文献

Hypoderma (=Oedemagena) tarandi L. (Diptera: Oestridae) is characterized by a mating strategy in which both sexes meet and mate at two types of distinct topographical landmarks. In the expansive, treeless vidda (= tundra-like) biome, mating places are unique, rocky areas located along rivers and streams or in rocky areas of drying river and stream beds. In wooded valleys below the vidda, flies mated at certain topographical areas along dirt road tracks/paths. Thermoregulatory activities of males occupying perches at mating places included selection of substratum at perch site, orientation of body to sun's rays, crouching, stilting, and flights into upper cooler air. On warm sunny days males perched for just 1–2 min before flying up into cooler air to promote cooling. Laboratory and field studies revealed that flies could not metabolically cool down when held at 25–38°C. Time spent at mating places depended on temperature, duration of sunshine, and wind velocity. Males were very aggressive in pursuing allHypoderma-sized objects that passed by them or that landed near them, but they did not defend specific perch sites. Males either pursued and caught females in flight, or they hopped onto females that landed near them. During 5 years, 74 males and 14 females were seen at mating places. Dissection of six females caught at mating places revealed them to be recently eclosed flies full of fat body and with all eggs intact; two not paired with males were non-inseminated. Three experimentally paired females remainedin copulo for 10, 13, and 19.5 min.  相似文献
