In this ethnobotanical study, the authors provide the first quantitative analysis of the use of wild edible plants in Estonia, describing the domains and assessing the food importance of different species. The information was collected using free‐listing written questionnaires and concerned plants used by the respondents in their childhood. As part of a major study, this article covers the responses of professionals with some botanical education at vocational or university level, to ensure the greatest possible reliability without using voucher specimens. Fifty‐eight respondents provided information on the use of 137 plant taxa, corresponding to approximately 6% of the native and naturalized vascular plants of Estonia. According to use frequency, the most typical wild food plant of Estonia is a fruit, eaten raw as a snack. The results clearly signal that the majority of famine and food shortage plants had already been forgotten by the end of the 20th century, but new plants have been introduced as green vegetables for making salads. Despite changes in the nomenclature of the plants, the use of wild food plants in Estonia was still thriving at the turn of the 20th century, covering many domains already forgotten in urbanized modern Europe. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 172 , 239–253.  相似文献

The black immigrant population in New York City has grown exponentially since 1990, such that West Indians now compose the majority of the black population in several neighbourhoods. This article examines how this ethnic density manifests among youth in high school, and how it has influenced ethnic identity formation among second-generation West Indians. My findings are based on twenty-four interviews and eight months of participant observation in two Brooklyn high schools from 2003 to 2004. The results show that in both schools, Caribbean island identities have become a ‘cool’ commodity within peer groups. Further, although it was important to express pride in one's island identity, these young people often blurred their national origin boundaries by drawing on Jamaican popular culture as way of projecting a unified ‘West Indian identity’. The research also uncovers evidence of a de-stigmatization of Haitianness as a way to incorporate them as cultural insiders into the larger Caribbean collective.  相似文献

In “Origins and Destinations”, Luthra, Soehl and Waldinger aim at “extending the canon” in research on immigrant integration. They do so by studying group and individual level characteristics across a large number of origin groups, thereby replacing group labels with theoretically relevant variables at the group level. In this review, three challenges in this endeavour are discussed: First of all, the analyses do not allow to disentangle the impact of group and individual level characteristics for all variables alike. Secondly, a primary data collection more tailored to the specifics of their conceptual framework is needed. This would many conclusions about how contexts of emigration and immigration truly matter above and beyond individual characteristic on a more solid ground. And third, the authors’ aim to abandon the use of origin group categories in empirical research on immigrant integration may come at a price.  相似文献

In this paper we bring together the literatures on frame analysis, the meaning of race and campus racial climate to analyse the race frames – lenses through which individuals understand the role of race in society – held by white students attending elite US universities. For most, the elite university experience coincides with a strengthening or emergence of the diversity frame, which emphasizes the positive benefits of cultural diversity. Still, many also hold a colour-blind frame, which sees race groups as equivalent and racial identities as insignificant. We highlight the ambivalence that these divergent frames create for student perspectives on affirmative action and interracial contact on campus. Our findings demonstrate the mutability of race frames. We also highlight the impact that institutions may have on individuals' race frames. The paper is based on in-depth interviews with forty-seven US-born white undergraduates attending Brown University and Harvard University.  相似文献

We investigated the production of hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) in illuminated seawater media containing a variety of zwitterionic buffers. Production rates varied extensively among buffers, with 4‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)1‐piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) highest and N‐Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl‐3‐aminopropanesulfonic acid (TAPS) among the lowest. The rate of HOOH accumulation was remarkably consistent over many days, and increased linearly with buffer concentration, natural seawater concentration, and light level. Concentrations of HEPES commonly used in culture media (1–10 mM) generated enough HOOH to kill the axenic Prochlorococcus strain VOL1 during growth in enriched seawater media at lower, environmentally realistic cell concentrations and/or under high light exposure. We also demonstrated that HEPES can be used experimentally to study the biological effects of chronic exposure to sublethal levels of HOOH such as may be experienced by light‐exposed microorganisms.  相似文献

Recently, we established a protocol for the cultivation of primary porcine oviduct epithelial cells (POEC), which promoted tissue-like morphology for a prolonged culture period. The present study focuses on developing this model into a comprehensive, standardized culture system, as a candidate tool for reproductive toxicity testing and basic research. We cultivated POEC isolated from 25 animals in our culture system for both 3 and 6 weeks and systematically analyzed effects of medium conditioning, supplementation with standardized sera, and culture duration in both freshly isolated and cryopreserved cells. The differentiation status was evaluated via histomorphometry, transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) measurement, and expression analyses. The culture system possessed high reproducibility, more than 95% of cultures achieved a fully differentiated phenotype. Cells recapitulated in vivo–like morphology and ultrastructure from 3 to 6 weeks. Cryopreservation of the cells prior to cultivation did not affect culture quality of POEC. Employment of conditioned medium ensured optimal promotion of POEC differentiation, and different standardized sera induced fully differentiated phenotypes. Consistent TEER establishment indicated the presence and maintenance of cell type–specific intercellular junctions. The functionality of POEC was proven by consistent mucin secretion and stable expression of selected markers over the whole culture duration. We conclude that POEC are suitable for experiments from 3 weeks up to at least 6 weeks of culture. Therefore, this culture system could be used for in vitro estrous cycle simulation and long-term investigation of toxic effects on oviduct epithelium.  相似文献

This paper explores the processes whereby complex scientific developments are rendered into locally intelligible idioms as part of strategies to incorporate a ‘public’ in decisions which may have profound implications in the longer term. We focus in particular on the recent developments in genetic technologies and take as our example the deCode biogenetic project in Iceland. We trace how the images and metaphors drawn upon by all sides of the debate created powerful resonances with Icelandic history and culture. Gastroesophageal reflux disease has been implicated in the pathogenesis of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. The same applies to laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and squamous cell cancer of the head and neck, but so far, this link has not been proven. The impact of low pH and bile acids has not been studied extensively in cells other than oesophageal cancer cell lines and tissue. The aims of this study were to investigate the pathogenic potential of reflux and its single components on the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract. We measured DNA stability in human miniorgan cultures (MOCs) and primary epithelial cell cultures (EpCs) in response to reflux by the alkaline comet assay. As matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in extracellular matrix remodelling processes and may contribute to cancer progression, we studied the expression of MMP1, -9, and -14 in MOCs, EpC, UM-SCC-22B, and FADUDD. DNA strand breaks (DNA-SBs) increased significantly at low pH and after incubation with human or artificial gastric juice. Single incubation with glycochenodeoxycholic acid also showed a significant increase in DNA-SBs. In epithelial cell cultures, human gastric juice increased the number of DNA-SBs at pH 4.5 and 5.5. Artificial gastric juice significantly up regulated the gene expression of MMP9. Western blot analysis confirmed the results of gene expression analysis, but the up regulation of MMP1, -9, and -14 was donor-specific. Reflux has the ability to promote genomic instability and may contribute to micro environmental changes suitable for the initiation of malignancy. Further functional gene analysis may elucidate the role of laryngopharyngeal reflux in the development of head neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).  相似文献

A modified metabolic model for mixed culture fermentation (MCF) is proposed with the consideration of an energy conserving electron bifurcation reaction and the transport energy of metabolites. The production of H2 related to NADH/NAD+ and Fdred/Fdox is proposed to be divided in three processes in view of energy conserving electron bifurcation reaction. This assumption could fine‐tune the intracellular redox balance and regulate the distribution of metabolites. With respect to metabolite transport energy, the proton motive force is considered to be constant, while the transport rate coefficient is proposed to be proportional to the octanol–water partition coefficient. The modeling results for a glucose fermentation in a continuous stirred tank reactor show that the metabolite distribution is consistent with the literature: (1) acetate, butyrate, and ethanol are main products at acidic pH, while the production shifts to acetate and propionate at neutral and alkali pH; (2) the main products acetate, ethanol, and butyrate shift to ethanol at higher glucose concentration; (3) the changes for acetate and butyrate are following an increasing hydrogen partial pressure. The findings demonstrate that our modified model is more realistic than previous proposed model concepts. It also indicates that inclusion of an energy conserving electron bifurcation reaction and metabolite transport energy for MCF is sound in the viewpoint of biochemistry and physiology. Biotechnol. The importance of epithelial–mesenchymal interaction on the development of gastro‐intestinal (GI) organs has been repeatedly reported, but its molecular mechanism has not been fully understood though several factors including hepatocyte growth factor and endothelin‐3 have been shown to mediate it. Activins have been demonstrated to play important roles in the regulation of organogenesis in vertebrates, but their roles in the regulation of growth and differentiation of GI organs remain to be solved. In the present study, we examined expression of activins in developing rat GI tract, and found that inhibin bA encoding activin A was specifically expressed by GI mesenchymes, while inhibin bB encoding activin B was expressed by both epithelial and mesenchymal components. We then examined the effect of activin A on the growth of fetal rat GI epithelial cells in primary culture. We found that activin A inhibited the growth of forestomach and glandular stomach epithelial cells while it stimulated the growth of colonic epithelial cells. These results suggest that activin A secreted from GI mesenchymes region‐specifically regulates the growth of attaching epithelial cells. We thus conclude that activin A mediates epithelial‐mesenchymal interaction in the developing GI tract.  相似文献
