Calcaneus secundarius: description and frequency in six skeletal samples   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The calcaneus secundarius (CS) is a small accessory ossicle of the anterior calcaneal facet. A sample of 1,367 calcanei including early 20th century U.S. blacks and whites, XIIth Dynasty Egyptians, Islamic Period Bahrainis, and protohistoric American Indians from two states were examined to determine the frequency of this nonmetric trait. Statistical testing of the correlation of the trait with sex could only be performed on the blacks and whites, a documented cadaver collection. Tests of chi 2 indicated that, although sex differences were insignificant, significant group (not necessarily racial or geographical) differences existed at the .05 level. There was no correlation of side dominance in the overall sample, although significant population differences existed. The trait frequencies of the black and white samples were more similar to one another than to the nonindustrial groups who, in turn, were more similar to each other than to the Terry sample. The findings suggest that a CS is of genetic or congenital origin resulting in a secondary center of ossification in the anterior calcaneal facet.  相似文献

The colonial matrices of the volvocacean algae were examined for the presence of sulfated and carboxylated polysaccharides. These results were compared to a similar examination of the single-celled Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dang. The colonial algae examined were Pandorina morum Bory, Eudorina elegans Ehr., Platydorina caudata Kofoid, Pleodorina californica Shaw, Pleodorina illinoisensis Kofoid and Volvox carteri var. nagariensis Iyengar. Alcian blue staining of whole colonies at pH 0.5 and 2.5 showed evidence for the presence of both sulfated and carboxylated polysaccharides in the extracellular matrix. Quantitative measurement of alcian blue bound to solubilized matrices supported the in vivo results. There was a trend toward an increase in sulfated polysaccharides in the more evolutionary advanced forms with the exception of Pleodorina. This trend was readily seen in the sulfate: carboxyl ratios: Pandorina morum—0.4, Eudorina elegans—1.0, Platydorina caudata—2.1 and Volvox carteri—2.2. The acidic nature of the Pleodorina matrix with a sulfate: carboxyl ratio of 0.2 appeared to be more like that of Pandorina rather than that of the more advanced Volvox.  相似文献

Anthocyanins, variously identified in inflorescence, fruit, leaf or petiole of 59 representative species of the Araccae, are of a simple type. The most common pigment is cyanidin 3-rutinoside, while pelargonidin 3-rutinoside and cyanidin 3-glucoside are regularly present. Two rare pigments are: cyanidin 3-gentiobioside in Anchomanes and Rhektophyllum, both in the subfamily Lasioideae; and delphinidin 3-rutinoside in Schismatoglottis concinna. In a leaf survey of 144 species from 58 genera, flavone C-glycosides (in 82%) and proanthocyanidins (in 35–45%) were found as the major flavonoids. In the subfamily Calloideae, subtribe Symplocarpeae, flavonols replace glycoflavones as the major leaf components but otherwise flavonols are uncommon in the family (in 27% of the sample) and more usually co-occur with flavone C-glycosides. Two new flavonol glycosides were characterized from Lysichiton camtschatcense: kaempferol 3-(6-arabinosylgalactoside)and kaempferol 3-xylosylgalactoside. Simple flavones, luteolin and chrysoeriol (in 6%) were found only in the subtribes Arinae and Cryptocoryninae, subfamily Aroideae. Flavonoid sulphates were identified in only four taxa: glycoflavone sulphates in two Culcasia species and Philodendron ornatum and a mixture of flavone and flavonol sulphates in Scindapsus pictus. Caffeic ester sulphates were more common and their presence in Anthurium hookeri was confirmed. These results show that the Araceae are unusual amongst the monocots in their simple and relatively uniform flavonoid profile; no one subfamily is clearly distinguished, although at tribal level some significant taxonomic patterns are observed. The best defined groups are the subfamilies Lasioideae and Monsteroideae, and the tribes Symplocarpeae and Arophyteae, and the subtribe Arinae. The greatest chemical diversity occurs in Anthurium and Philodendron, but this may only reflect the fact that these are the two largest genera in the family. The origin and relationship of the Araccae to other monocot groups are discussed in the light of the flavonoid evidence.  相似文献

1. 1.|Cold acclimation apparently favours an increase of water content in fat body, but not in coxal muscle, of cockroaches.

2. 2.|A remarkable enhancement in the accumulation of total protein in fat body characterizes the cold acclimation of cockroaches, particularly adult males (175% increase in protein/DNA ratio). The increase in protein content of coxal muscle during acclimination to 15°C, observed in nymphs (16%) and males (16%) but not in females, is less pronounced than that of fat body.

3. 3.|A diminution (28–32%) in the free amino acid/DNA ratio due to cold acclimation has been recorded in both coxal muscle and fat body of nymphs and females, but not in males.

4. 4.|No qualitative change occurs in the free amino acid spectrum of haemolymph and tissues of this insect during acclimation to 15 and 35°C.

5. 5.|An augmentation (15–30%) of the RNA/DNA ratio occurs in fat body and coxal muscle of nymphs and males but in fat body alone of females following cold acclimation.

6. 6.|The glycogen reserve has been shown to increase by up to 30% in fat body and coxal muscle of cold acclimated cockroaches compared to warm acclimated ones.

During the process of long term starvation both muscles and hepatopancreas are affected in their biochemical composition at different rates. During early days of starvation an increase in the muscular and hepatopancreatic glycogen is observed. At the same time a simultaneous decrease in the muscular lipid content is also observed. At a slightly later period a decrease in the hepatopancreatic lipid content is also noticed. This amount of decrease is slow in the early days of starvation and rapid in later days. Decrease in the muscular and hepatopancreatic protein content is observed when there is not an adequate quantity of hepatopancreatic lipid to be consumed.  相似文献

A single formamidase, which is different from the formamidases found in other tissues, occurs in the brains of mice. This enzyme is here called formamidase-5 and the gene symbol is designated For-5. Two alleles are recognized on the basis of their differential heat sensitivity: For-5 b is relatively heat stable and is present in strain C57BL/6J, while For-5 d is relatively heat sensitive and is present in strain DBA/2J. The heat sensitivity of formamidase-5 in 44 other inbred strains and substrains was tested and found to resemble that of C57BL/6J or DBA/2J. Thirty-six recombinant inbred strains derived from progenitors that differed at For-5 were studied to test for single-gene inheritance and linkage with other loci. Complete concordance was found with the esterase-10 locus (Es-10), indicating close linkage. The 99% upper confidence limit of the distance between For-5 and Es-10 is 3.7 centimorgans (cM). Es-10 is located on chromosome 14 about 19 cM from the centromere. An independent demonstration of linkage of For-5 with Es-10 and another chromosome 14 marker, hairless (hr), is provided by the finding that the HRS/J strain, which has been sibmated for 60 generations with forced heterozygosity at the hr locus, is cosegregating at For-5 and Es-10. A survey of 32 inbred strains and substrains revealed that the For-5 d allele is associated with the Es-10 b allele, and that the For-5 b allele is associated with Es-10 a and Es-10 c. Formamidase-5 segregates as expected in the F2 generation of crosses between strains bearing For-5 b and For-5 d alleles. It is possible that this unique formamidase of the brain is involved in the metabolism of a neurotransmitter substance. This research was sponsored in part by the Department of Energy under contract with the Union Carbide Corporation and in part by NIH Research Grant GM-18684 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Three electrophoretic variants of 3-phosphoglycerate kinase 2 (PGK-2A, PGK-2B, and PGK-2C) were purified from DBA/2J, C3H/HeJ, and C57L/J mice, respectively. PGK-2C exhibits only 2% of the specific activity of PGK-2A and PGK-2B in the reaction leading to the formation of 1,3-diphosphoglycerate. Compared to PGK-2A and PGK-2B, PGK-2C exhibits broader coenzyme specificity and lower Kms for substrate and coenzymes. Incubation at 45C revealed that PGK-2B is more heat stable than either PGK-2A or PGK-2C. Enzyme immunoinactivation and double immunodiffusion studies showed that mice carrying any one of these three PGK-2 alleles have similar amounts of proteins for PGK-1 and PGK-2 in testes. The results of these studies suggest that low PGK-2C activity in C57L/J mice is a result of a structural rather than a regulatory gene mutation.  相似文献

The patterns of five multilocus isozyme systems were investigated in seed, shoot and cotyledon tissue of two species of mesquite, Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa and P. pallida. The isozymes of malate dehydrogenase, peroxidase, esterase, alcohol dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase from each of these tissues were analysed by starch gel electrophoresis and specific histochemical stains. In the case of each enzyme system examined, there were distinctly different isozymes which could be utilized to differentiate between these two species.  相似文献

In a leaf survey of 168 species of the Liliaceae, most of the major flavonoid classes were found to be represented in the family. Flavonols occurred most frequently: quercetin and kaempferol were detected in 40% and 42% of the sample respectively, while the flavones luteolin and apigenin were present in only 24% and 20% of the sample. Methylated derivatives, i.e. isorhamnetin, diosmetin and tricin were rare. Procyanidins were present in 17 species, flavonoid sulphates in only one species and flavone C-glycosides in only three species. Anthraquinone pigments were identified in species of Aloe Asphodeline and Asphodelus. Three new flavonoid glycosides were characterised during the course of the survey: diosmetin 7-diglucoside in Colchicum byzanthinum and tricin 7-fructosylglucoside and tricin 7-rutinoside-4′-glucoside in Hyacinthus orientalis cv. ‘Quean of the Pinks’. On the basis of the flavonoid survey, the subfamilies of the Liliaceae may be grouped into those containing flavonols only, those with flavones only or those having both flavonols and flavones. Members of the related families: Amaryllidaceae (17 species), Agavaceae (1 species) and Xanthorrhoeaceae (1 species) contained only flavonols. The subfamilies Scilloideae, Asphodeloideae and Melanthioideae show the most chemical variation whilst the Wurmbaeoideae and Lilioideae are the most homogeneous groups. The tribe Scilleae is unusual in that both flavone- and flavonol-containing genera occur and a wide variety of flavonoid types are represented. A comparison of the leaf flavonoids of the Liliaceae with those found in families related to the grasses showed that all except two classes of flavonoid compound (5-methylated flavones and 5-deoxyflavonoids) found in the Juncaceae. Cyperaceae, Palmae and Gramineae are present in the Liliaceae thus supporting the view that all four families could have arisen from Liliaceae-like ancestors.  相似文献
