Nutrients, chlorophyll, phaeophytin and algal abundances were investigated in the surface microlayer and at subsurface depths in a small eutrophic bog pond. Nutrient levels were consistently higher in the microlayer while algal abundance was sometimes higher but sometimes lower in the microlayer than at near subsurface depths. Algal diversity values were strongly influenced by the depth of flagellate blooms, and in contrast to previous studies, diversity in the microlayer was higher than at near subsurface depths. These results are discussed in terms of weather parameters, affinity of algal species for the surface and differences between microlayer ecology in shallow and deep water systems. 相似文献

For two years a community of larval chironomid midges was studied in a sandy-run portion of a fourth order natural stream in SE Ohio, U.S.A. in order to determine if the species partitioned the spatial resources. The habitat structure was simplified from ten habitat variables to three significant principal components. The three eigenvectors were easily interpreted as sediment size, sediment heterogeneity, and organic deposition. Species abundances were loaded on these axes and niche metrics examined. Strong differences in habitat preference were demonstrated for midge species on each component. Also, there were no differences in distributions for the intraspecific instars for each species tested at a given time, but for each of the instars tested, their distributions were found to change from time to time. Apparently, individuals of a species, regardless of instar, simultaneously choose the same habitat, however, the preferred habitat may shift temporally due to change in resource availability, or niche expansion or compression due to competition. 相似文献

Concentrations of Cu, Ag and Zn were measured in the soft tissues of the estuarine bivalve Macoma balthica in South San Francisco Bay at near-monthly intervals for periods of two to three years at four stations, and eight years at a metal-enriched station. The amplitude and frequency of fluctuations differed among stations and among metals. Fluctuations were greatest at stations with the greatest metal enrichment and with the least dilution and flushing of wastes. A consistent seasonal pattern of fluctuation in Cu and Ag concentrations was evident in M. balthica at the metal-enriched station. These seasonal changes in tissue metal concentrations appeared to be affected by metal inputs, hydrologic processes that may affect both metal concentrations and bioavailability, and seasonal changes in the weight of the bivalve. The contributions of each of these interacting factors could not be determined quantitatively. At the metal-enriched station significant variation in the amplitude of seasonal fluctuations was also evident from year to year. Interpretation of metal concentrations in bivalves from estuaries will require careful consideration of the processes which affect metal dynamics in these complex environments. 相似文献

Summary The endomembrane system during carposporogenesis inChondria tenuissima was studied using electron microscopy and histochemistry. Profiles of the nucleus are convoluted, resulting in a highly increased surface area. Stacked cisternae are found within the peripheral part of the nucleus. Vesicles, tubules and membrane bound fibrillar bodies occur within the nucleoplasm. The endoplasmic reticulum surrounds the nuclear envelope.The endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus, together with small transition vesicles, represent a functional unit. They form two different secretory substances during carposporogenesis. In young stages, carbohydrates are produced by normal dictyosomes within large, normal exocytotic Golgi vesicles. They do not react positively with PAS or Thiéry method and are believed to represent cell wall material. In later stages, the central area of the Golgi cisternae becomes filled with electron dense material. The individual cisternae are transformed into cored vesicles at the trans-face of the dictyosomes. The dense core of the vesicles is proteinaceous and stains with coomassie brilliant blue R. The peripheral fibrillar material is polysaccharidic and reacts positively using the Thiéry method. The contents of the cored vesicles are believed to participate in carpospore attachment. The ER gives rise to cytolysosomes in which starch grains are sequestrated and digested. Mucilaginous sacs seem to be similarly formed. 相似文献

Growth of Aphanocapsa in low iron media resulted in a decrease of the endogenous iron pool. Below a critical concentration photosynthetic electron transfer was specifically depressed. This was caused by a strong inhibition of the synthesis of cytochromes b-559 of PSII, cytochromes b-563, f-557, and the Rieske Fe-S center of the cytochrome complex and especially the Fe-S centers of PSI. Phytoplankton production and respiration in the Blue Nile and White Nile at Khartoum were measured during the period November 1969–January 1971 using the light and dark bottle technique. Maximum rates of production coincided with periods of maximum phytoplankton densities. In the Blue Nile gross production varied between 0.00 gCm–3d–1 during the flood season and 2.19 gCm–3d–1 (0.49 mgO2l–1h–1) during November 1969. In the White Nile the range was from 0.41 gCm–3d–1 (0.09 MgO2l–1h–1) in May to 3.74 gCm–3d–1 (0.83 MgO2l–1h–1) in November. The maximum rates of respiration in the Blue Nile and White Nile were 0.10 and 0.63 MgO2l–1h–1 respectively. Simple mathematical models are formulated to describe density independent and density dependent dispersal. These models clarify
hypotheses of density dependence and may be manipulated easily to suit particular applications. The models demonstrate that
the initial composition of a species aggregate must be controlled before valid conclusions can be drawn about the density
dependency of the aggregate's dispersal. Stochastic models of emigration are derived to assess the power of particular experimental
designs and statistical techniques to discriminate a known form of density dependent emigration.

Several methods for the estimation of the reaeration coefficient were compared by determining the ability of the methods to recover the correct K value from a computer-simulated stream oxygen record affected by a variety of non-ideal conditions. Noisy data and long observation intervals were not a serious problem for most methods. Saturating photosynthesis, fluctuating light intensity, afternoon depression and temperature variation caused failures by some methods but were well handled by others. Serious impairment of all methods occurred with low productivity or high K. In general, the best-performing methods were the modified hysteresis, nighttime regression, daytime regression, Odum and Hornberger-Kelly daytime methods. 相似文献
