Suppression of plant parasitic nematodes with nematode predators, parasites or antagonists is an eco-friendly approach than the toxic chemicals. In a study, soil borne fungi from the rhizosphere of major spice crops were collected from diverse cropping systems prevailing in three southern states of India. A series of in vitro studies were conducted using 73 freshly collected fungal isolates and 76 isolates obtained from other sources. Out of this 67 isolates were not parasitic on females of root-knot nematodes whereas 115 isolates, though colonized the egg masses, did not show any signs of parasitism on nematode eggs. Fifty-nine isolates showed 50-90% inhibition in egg hatch. Pochonia chlamydospora, Verticillium lecanii, Paecilomyces lilacinus, and few isolates of Trichoderma spp. showed >25% parasitism on root-knot nematode eggs. The most promising isolates in this study were one isolate each of Aspergillus (F.45), Fusarium (F.47), and Penicillium (F.59); three each isolates of Trichoderma (F.3, F.52, and F.60) and Pochonia (F.30 and Vc.3) Verticillium (Vl); and two isolates of fungi that could not be identified (F.28 and F.62). Parasitism by Aspergillus tamarii, Aspergillus ustus, Drechslera sp., Humicola sp., and Scopulariopsis sp. on root-knot nematode eggs or females, reported in the present study, are new reports.  相似文献

Recent considerations of parasite virulence have focused on the adverse effects that parasites can have on the survival of their hosts. Many parasites, however, reduce host fitness by an equally deleterious but different means, by causing partial or complete sterility of their hosts. A model of optimal parasite virulence is developed in which a quantity of host resources can be allocated to either host or parasite reproduction. Increases in parasite reproduction thus cause reductions in host fertility. The model shows that under a wide variety of ecological conditions, such parasites should completely sterilize their hosts. Only when opportunities for horizontal transmission are very limited should the parasites appropriate less than all of a host's reproductive resources. Field and laboratory evidence shows that the nematode parasite Howardula aoronymphium is relatively avirulent to one of its principal host species, Drosophila falleni, whereas it is much more virulent to D. putrida and D. neotestacea, suggesting that there may be substantial vertical transmission in D. falleni. However, epidemiological studies in the field and laboratory assays of host specificity strongly suggest that the three host species share a single parasite pool in natural populations, indicating that parasites in all three host species experience high levels of horizontal transmission. Thus, the low virulence of H. aoronymphium to D. falleni is not consistent with the model of optimal parasite virulence. It is proposed that this suboptimal virulence in D. falleni is a consequence of populations of H. aoronymphium being selected to exploit simultaneously several different host species. As a result, virulence may not be optimal in any one host. One must, therefore, consider the full range of host species in assessing a parasite's virulence.  相似文献

Adequate moisture levels are required for nematode survival and subsequent efficacy as entomopathogens. Formulation of nematodes aimed at aboveground applications may assist in maintaining such moisture levels. In this study, we report the effects of a superabsorbent polymer formulation, Zeba® on the performance of an entomopathogenic nematode, Heterorhabditis zealandica Poinar, for controlling diapausing codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) larvae in cryptic habitats on trees. Water activity (aw-value) on bark was considered to be an indication of moisture levels on trees in cryptic habitats where codling moth larvae are known to occur, thereby influencing nematode efficacy. H. zealandica was only able to infect codling moth larvae at aw≥0.92, with aw50=0.94 and aw90=0.96. Laboratory experiments in which nematode concentration was investigated indicated a positive linear relationship between the concentration of nematodes applied and the level of control obtained, with the highest level of mortality recorded at 80 IJs/larva, requiring at least 4 h of conditions conducive to nematode activity to ensure infectivity and subsequent efficacy. Further experimentation showed that the use of the Zeba formulation, together with the nematodes, improved the level of control obtained at 60% and 80% RH in the laboratory and that it also enhanced the survival and infection-ability of the nematodes in the field. The study conclusively illustrates that the tested formulation assisted in maintaining adequate moisture levels on the application substratum, as required for nematode survival and subsequent efficacy.  相似文献

Plants protect their roots by alerting the enemies of grubs   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Plant roots in the soil are under attack from many soil organisms. Although many ecologists are aware of the presence and importance of natural enemies in the soil that protect the plants from herbivores, the existence and nature of tritrophic interactions are poorly understood. So far, attention has focused on how plants protect their above-ground parts against herbivorous arthropods, either directly or indirectly (i.e. by getting help from the herbivore's enemies). This article is the first in showing that indirect plant defences also operate underground. We show that the roots of a coniferous plant ( Thuja occidentalis ) release chemicals upon attack by weevil larvae ( Otiorhynchus sulcatus ) and that these chemicals thereby attract parasitic nematodes ( Heterorhabditis megidis ).  相似文献

The protein concentrations of fat body and ovaries in Ips sexdentatus either uninfected or infected by Parasitaphelenchus sp., P. sexdentati, or Contortylenchus diplogaster were measured at various stages of insect development, from preswarming maturation to the first oviposition (24 hr after mating). Weight variations of the fat body and ovaries in insects infected by C. diplogaster show the same evolution as those observed in uninfected insects, but at a much lower level. Fat body proteins in uninfected insects reach their minimum level during swarming, but they remain fairly constant throughout the maturation of the first egg. After dropping shortly after swarming, the ovarian protein level in such insects increases in two stages during ovarian maturation. The first stage, which corresponds to a slow protein incorporation, takes place during the first 12 hr after mating. During the second stage, i.e., beyond 12 hr, a significant level of proteins is rapidly incorporated into the ovaries. In insects infected by Parasitaphelenchus fat body proteins are reduced and protein incorporation into the ovaries is reduced; Parasitaphelenchus would thus affect at least some proteins required for ovarian maturation in their host. Fat body protein levels are even more affected by C. diplogaster than by Parasitaphelenchus, while incorporation into ovaries seems to be less affected in spite of slower ovarian growth. C. diplogaster might thus essentially act both upon proteins which are not required for the ovarian maturation of their host and upon nonproteinaceous substances that are required for such maturation. Results are discussed in relation to the possible mode of action of parasitic nematodes.  相似文献

We found evidence that a nematode (Skrjabinoclava morrisoni) adaptivelymanipulates the behavior of its intermediate host (the amphipod Corophiumvolutator) to increase its likelihood of transmission to itsfinal host (the semipalmated sandpiper, Calidris pusilla). We foundthat male and female amphipods parasitized by nematodes increasedtheir surface activity in the field during daytime, but notduring nighttime hours. Increased surface activity is knownto increase susceptibility of amphipods to predation by sandpipersduring the day, but not at night, when sandpipers do not feedvisually. Also, as predicted by the manipulation hypothesis, only late-stage (infective) larvae of nematodes were associatedwith behavioral changes of amphipods. We found no evidence thatparasites were associated with other amphipod behaviors in thelaboratory, such as trail complexity, distance traveled, orburrow-probing activity of crawling males as would be expectedif parasitized hosts altered their own behavior. Survivorshipof amphipods was also unaffected by parasitism, which may favorparasite transmission. Thus, behavioral changes of parasitizedhosts were simple, and their expression was context-dependentand related to likelihood of predation. We argue that maturationtimes of nematodes in relation to migration schedules of sandpipers providea narrow window of opportunity and may explain why nematodes manipulateamphipod behavior.  相似文献

Resistance to parasites is believed to have a widespread influence on demographic and adaptive processes. In systems where parasites impose a fitness cost on their host, heterozygotes may be selected because they are more resistant to parasites than homozygotes. Our objective was to assess the relationships between genomewide individual heterozygosity and abomasal nematode burdens in female Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) after the effects of host age, locality, season, and year had been accounted for. Samples were obtained from 306 female reindeer that were culled and genotyped at nine microsatellite loci. Reindeer in our study populations are mainly parasitized by the gastrointestinal nematodes Ostertagia gruehneri and Marshallagia marshalli. The infection intensity of each parasite differed between subpopulations, and among host age classes, seasons and years. We found no significant relationships between abomasal worm burdens, or lumen and mucosa larvae, of either O. gruehneri or M. marshalli and individual heterozygosity (or mean d(2)) alone or in interactions with host age, locality, and year. Although we analysed one of the largest data set available to date on gastrointestinal nematodes of a wild ruminant, we used a typical data set of nine genetic neutral markers that may have had low power to detect heterozygosity-fitness correlations. We conclude that the proportion of the variance in parasite resistance explained by individual heterozygosity for neutral genetic markers is low in Svalbard reindeer and in vertebrates in general, and we suggest that the candidate-gene approach might be more fruitful for further research on gene-fitness correlations.  相似文献

Field trials were established at three European sites (Denmark, Eastern France, South-West France) of genetically modified maize (Zea mays L.) expressing the CryIAb Bacillus thuringiensis toxin (Bt), the near-isogenic non-Bt cultivar, another conventional maize cultivar and grass. Soil from Denmark was sampled at sowing (May) and harvest (October) over two years (2002, 2003); from E France at harvest 2002, sowing and harvest 2003; and from SW France at sowing and harvest 2003. Samples were analysed for microbial community structure (2003 samples only) by community-level physiological-profiling (CLPP) and phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA), and protozoa and nematodes in all samples. Individual differences within a site resulted from: greater nematode numbers under grass than maize on three occasions; different nematode populations under the conventional maize cultivars once; and two occasions when there was a reduced protozoan population under Bt maize compared to non-Bt maize. Microbial community structure within the sites only varied with grass compared to maize, with one occurrence of CLPP varying between maize cultivars (Bt versus a conventional cultivar). An overall comparison of Bt versus non-Bt maize across all three sites only revealed differences for nematodes, with a smaller population under the Bt maize. Nematode community structure was different at each site and the Bt effect was not confined to specific nematode taxa. The effect of the Bt maize was small and within the normal variation expected in these agricultural systems.  相似文献

Many parasitic worms enter their hosts by active invasion. Their transmission success is often based on a mass production of invasive stages. However, most stages show a highly specific host-finding behaviour. Information on host-finding mechanisms is available mainly for trematode miracidia and cercariae and for nematode hookworms. The larvae find and recognise their hosts, in some cases even with species specificity, via complex sequences of behavioural patterns with which they successively respond to various environmental and host cues. There is often a surprisingly high diversity of host-recognition strategies. Each parasite species finds and enters its host using a different series of cues. For example, different species of schistosomes enter the human skin using different recognition sequences. The various recognition strategies may reflect adaptations to distinct ecological conditions of transmission. Another question is how, after invasion, parasitic worms find their complex paths through their host's tissues to their often very specific microhabitats. Recent data show that the migrating parasite stages can follow local chemical gradients of skin and blood compounds, but their long-distance navigation within the host body still remains puzzling.

The high complexity, specificity and diversity of host-recognition strategies suggest that host finding and host recognition are important determinants in the evolution of parasite life cycles.  相似文献
