Abstract

A cecidomyiid that feeds on developing seeds in the inflorescences of the New Zealand tussock grasses Chionochloa australis, C. conspicua, C. crassiuscula, C.flavescens, C. macra, C. oreophila, C. pallens, C. rigida, C. rubra, C. spiralis and C. teretifolia is formally described from C. pallens. The new species, named Eucalyptodiplosis chionochloae Kolesik, is the most ubiquitous of flower feeders of Chionochloa. Its larvae do not form galls but feed on the developing seeds in autumn, overwinter as diapausing larvae inside the floret, and pupate then rapidly eclose in summer, sometimes after extended diapause. Methods for rearing adults are described. Based on its morphological characters this species is most closely related to two described congeners that form galls on buds of Eucalyptus trees in Australia. Seed predation by Eucalyptodiplosis chionochloae larvae appears to be the primary driver of the extreme mast seeding (variation among years in flower crops) seen in the host Chionochloa species.  相似文献

Aerobic rice is a production system where adapted rice varieties are established via direct seeding in non-puddled, non-flooded, non-saturated fields and grown under conditions similar to upland conditions. On land cultivated continuously with aerobic rice, a yield reduction has been observed. The rice root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola is considered one of the possible causes of these yield reductions. Resistance to and tolerance for M. graminicola are essential traits for aerobic rice cultivars in alleviating this problem. In our study, the host response of nineteen aerobic, seven upland and four lowland rice genotypes which are either being used in the International Rice Research Institute’s aerobic rice breeding programme or already cultivated by farmers in Asia was evaluated under aerobic soil conditions in an outdoor raised-bed experiment. Our study showed a large variation in susceptibility and sensitivity to M. graminicola infection among the rice genotypes examined. Resistance comparable to the resistant reference genotypes included in the experiment (CG14, TOG5674, TOG7235) was not found but in terms of susceptibility, the upland genotype Morobereken may be an interesting less-susceptible genotype. Tolerance was found and in terms of sensitivity, the high yielding aerobic genotype IR78877-208-B-1-2 may be an interesting tolerant genotype. Our study also allowed the identification of rice genotypes that are either highly susceptible or sensitive to M. graminicola infection and of which the cultivation should be discouraged. On average, M. graminicola caused an almost 30% reduction in yield. Excluding the two susceptible and three resistant reference genotypes included in the experiment, most affected was dry-shoot biomass (23.6% reduction) followed by root length, which was more affected than fresh-root weight (19.8 vs. 8%) and grain filling (17.3%), while plant height and the number of spikelets/panicle were less affected (10.2 and 8.1%, respectively). Neither tillering nor the number of panicles/plant were affected.  相似文献

Effects of the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) on lentil (Lens culinaris) were studied under greenhouse conditions. The plants were inoculated with 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 J2 per plant. Plant growth, yield, nodulation, seed weight, chlorophyll, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, (NPK) contents, as compared to control, were found decreased in all the nematode infected plants. The extent of reduction increased with an increase in inoculum levels. The reductions were significant at 500 J2 and at higher inoculum levels, i.e. 1000, 2000 and 4000 J2 per pot over the control. An increase in inoculum level caused enhancement in galling, egg mass production and nematode population. At higher inoculum levels, the population of the nematode in the root as well as in the soil increased to a greater magnitude than at lower inoculum levels. On the contrary, reproduction factor (RF) and rate of population increase (RPI) decreased with increasing inoculum levels.  相似文献

Ficus benjamina, commonly known as weeping fig, Benjamin’s fig or Ficus tree is a species of flowering plant in the family of Moraceae. It is native to south and south-east Asia and Australia. Crown gall tumours were collected from branches of one-year-old weeping fig (F. benjamina L.) trees. A total of 50 strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens were isolated from diseased Ficus plants and their morphological, molecular and biochemical characteristics were studied; pathogenicity tests on tomato, F. benjamina and Bryophyllum daigremontianum were also conducted. Based on the biochemical characteristics, pathogenicity test and PCR amplification of 730?bp fragment using VCR\VCF primers, the tested bacterial strains were identified as A. tumefaciens. This is the first report of crown gall on F. benjamina in Isfahan and Fars provinces of Iran.  相似文献

Lifetime reproductive success in female insects is often egg‐ or time‐limited. For instance in pro‐ovigenic species, when oviposition sites are abundant, females may quickly become devoid of eggs. Conversely, in the absence of suitable oviposition sites, females may die before laying all of their eggs. In pollinating fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae), each species has an obligate mutualism with its host fig tree species [Ficus spp. (Moraceae)]. These pro‐ovigenic wasps oviposit in individual ovaries within the inflorescences of monoecious Ficus (syconia, or ‘figs’), which contain many flowers. Each female flower can thus become a seed or be converted into a wasp gall. The mystery is that the wasps never oviposit in all fig ovaries, even when a fig contains enough wasp females with enough eggs to do so. The failure of all wasps to translate all of their eggs into offspring clearly contributes to mutualism persistence, but the underlying causal mechanisms are unclear. We found in an undescribed Brazilian Pegoscapus wasp population that the lifetime reproductive success of lone foundresses was relatively unaffected by constraints on oviposition. The number of offspring produced by lone foundresses experimentally introduced into receptive figs was generally lower than the numbers of eggs carried, despite the fact that the wasps were able to lay all or most of their eggs. Because we excluded any effects of intraspecific competitors and parasitic non‐pollinating wasps, our data suggest that some pollinators produce few offspring because some of their eggs or larvae are unviable or are victims of plant defences.  相似文献

Behavioral lateralization, which is associated with the functional lateralization of the two brain hemispheres, commonly exists in animals and can provide an individual with benefits such as enhanced cognition and dual tasking. Lateral bias in limb use, as a type of behavioral lateralization, occur in many species, but the reasons for the coexistence of left‐ and right‐biased individuals in a population remain poorly understood. We examined the footedness of male yellow‐bellied tits (Pardaliparus venustulus) when they used feet to clamp mealworms against a perch, and tested its association with other fitness‐related behavioral traits (i.e., feeding efficiency, exploration tendency, and escape performance). We expected differently footed individuals to have respective advantages in these behaviors and thereby coexist (“respective advantage” hypothesis). We found their footedness repeatable, and there was no population‐level bias. While no associations of feeding efficiency and exploration tendency with footedness were detected, the right‐footed individuals were found to be harder to catch than the other individuals. Future studies need to investigate the reasons for the right‐footed individuals' superior escape performance. Moreover, the escape advantage for being right‐footed and the lack of population‐level bias in footedness in male yellow‐bellied tits suggest that the benefits related to left footedness also remain to be explored.  相似文献

Morphological, molecular and ecological studies revealed that Kiefferia Mik, 1985 (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is not a monotypic genus. Two new species, Kiefferia ezoensis sp. nov. and K. olla sp. nov. from Japan and Korea are added to the known European species, Kiefferia pericarpiicola. The new and known species are distinguishable from each other mainly by the shape of the larval sternal spatula. Molecular data support the results of morphological classification. Species of Kiefferia induce fruit galls on various plant species of Apiaceae. We found that K. ezoensis and K. olla utilized exclusively Angelica ursina and Oenanthe javanica, respectively. In contrast, we listed 37 apiaceous species belonging to 23 genera as hosts for K. pericarpiicola from previously published reports, suggesting the existence of additional undescribed species. Life history patterns of the three species are distinctly different from each other. Mature larvae of K. ezoensis and K. olla drop to the ground with the fruit gall in October and September, respectively, whereas mature larvae of K. pericarpiicola quit the galls and drop to the ground in August. A key to the Kiefferia species is provided based on morphological features and information on life history patterns and host ranges.  相似文献

The species of Pseudidarnes are revised, and six species are described: P. acaudus Farache & Rasplus, sp. n.; P. astridae Farache & Rasplus, sp. n.; P. badiogeminus Farache & Rasplus, sp. n.; P. cooki Farache & Rasplus, sp. n.; P. kjellbergi Farache & Rasplus, sp. n.; P. laevis Farache & Rasplus, sp. n. Pseudidarnes minerva Girault, 1927 and P. flavicollis Bouček, 1988 are redescribed. A key to the species is provided as well as illustrations for all females and all known males (except the wingless male of P. minerva). We also provided further discussion on ecology, morphological patterns, and host taxonomy. Online dichotomous and multi-access interactive LUCID keys to all Pseudidarnes species are available at http://www.figweb.org/.  相似文献
