Larvae of the parasitic wasp family Figitidae develop as internal parasitoids of other endopterygote insect larvae. The hosts are typically dipteran larvae living in other microhabitats but the earliest figitids probably attacked gall-inhabiting hymenopteran larvae. Here, we formally describe a new genus (Parnips) and subfamily (Parnipinae) for a species that is likely to be a surviving representative of these early gall-associated figitids. The species, P. nigripes , has been reared repeatedly from galls inside the seed capsules of annual poppies (Papaver dubium and P. rhoeas) in the Mediterranean region together with the gall inducer Barbotinia oraniensis belonging to the Cynipidae, the sister group of Figitidae. Parnips nigripes is strikingly cynipid-like and was first assumed to be a cynipid gall inducer of the genus Aulacidea. Phylogenetic analyses have since indicated that the similarity with the Cynipidae is symplesiomorphic and that P. nigripes belongs to the Figitidae, where it forms the sister group of all other extant figitids. Recently, it has also been shown that P. nigripes is a parasitoid of the gall-inducing Barbotinia oraniensis , consistent with its proposed phylogenetic position. Parnips nigripes shares several unusual morphological traits with its host. We speculate that many of these similarities are homologous even though the lineages separated at least 83 million years ago. 相似文献

1 Infestation by the blackcurrant leaf midge Dasineura tetensi and galling incidence on a susceptible (cv. ‘Öjebyn’) and a moderately resistant (cv. ‘Storklas’) blackcurrant genotype was studied in the field for two midge generations in the same growing season. On the resistant genotype gall initiation is delayed. 2 The relation between infestation and galling incidence showed considerable variation between the two generations. Galling symptoms produced by the second midge generation were weak on the resistant as compared with the susceptible blackcurrant. 3 Because larval development of that generation coincided with a period of dry and warm weather, it is possible that larvae on the resistant genotype suffered desiccation to a greater extent than larvae on the susceptible genotype where gall development was stronger. 4 The possible interaction of relative humidity and expression of resistance was investigated in controlled environment experiments. The resistant ‘Storklas’ and a susceptible (‘7801–31’) currant genotype were studied at two constant relative humidities, 30 and 70%. 5 Larvae of D. tetensi suffered from higher mortality and reduced growth rate on both genotypes in the low humidity environment. 6 There was also a significant plant genotype by humidity interaction on larval performance; no galls were produced and no larvae completed development on the resistant currant at low humidity. 7 There was a trend for a positive correlation between larval length and larval density on a plant at low humidity but not at high humidity. 相似文献

We studied the effects of contrasting light environments on the relationship between the host plant size of Poulsenia armata and the abundance of two gall midges in a tropical rain forest in Veracruz, Mexico. The number and density of two gall morphs (i.e., laminar and vein‐petiole galls) were positively correlated with plant size only in trees found in the forest but not in gaps. The availability of foliar area of P. armata trees was greater in forest gaps than in the forest. The foliar area was positively correlated with the abundance of laminar galls in trees in forest sites, but not with vein‐petiole galls. We concluded that the abundance of two morphs of gall midges on P. armata was associated with host plant size only in the forest trees. We report behavioral evidence that Eurosta solidaginis, a stem-galling tephritid fly, has formed host races on its two goldenrod hosts, Solidago altissima and S. gigantea. Previous work has shown that flies from each host plant differ electrophoretically at the level of host races. The two host-associated populations were truly sympatric and were frequently found on host plants of the two species growing interdigitated with each other. Each host-associated population demonstrated a strong preference for ovipuncturing its own host. The S. gigantea–associated population emerged 10 to 14 d earlier than the S. altissima–associated population, contributing to the reproductive isolation between populations. Partial reproductive isolation is also maintained by a preference for mating on the host from which the fly emerged. The populations meet the criteria established for host races, suggesting that they may be in an intermediate stage of sympatric speciation. 相似文献

Aim
As species' ranges shift poleward in response to anthropogenic change, they may lose antagonistic interactions if they move into less diverse communities, fail to interact with novel populations or species effectively, or if ancestral interacting populations or species fail to shift synchronously. We leveraged a poleward range expansion in a tractable insect host–enemy community to uncover mechanisms by which altered antagonistic interactions between native and recipient communities contributed to ‘high niche opportunities’ (limited biotic resistance) for a range-expanding insect.Location

We created quantitative insect host–enemy interaction networks by sampling oak gall wasps on 400 trees of a dominant oak species in the native and expanded range of a range-expanding gall wasp species. We compared host–enemy network structure between regions. We measured traits (phenology, morphology) of galls and interacting parasitoids, predicting greater trait divergence in the expanded range. We measured function relating to host control and explored if altered interactions and traits contributed to reduced function, or biotic resistance.Results
Interaction networks had fewer species in the expanded range and lower complementarity of parasitoid assemblages among host species. While networks were more generalized, interactions with the range-expanding species were more specialized in the expanded range. Specialist enemies effectively tracked the range-expanding host, and there was reduced apparent competition with co-occurring hosts by shared generalist enemies. Phenological divergence of enemy assemblages interacting with the range-expanding and co-occurring hosts was greater in the expanded range, potentially contributing to weak apparent competition. Biotic resistance was lower in the expanded range, where fewer parasitoids emerged from galls of the range-expanding host.Main Conclusions
Changes in interactions with generalist enemies created high niche opportunities, and limited biotic resistance, suggesting weak apparent competition may be a mechanism of enemy release for range-expanding insects embedded within generalist enemy networks. 相似文献137.

Damage caused by insect herbivores, notably Asian rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzae is more prevalent in the rice-growing belts of India's southern and north-eastern states. As a prelude to resistant cultivar development, the identification of genomic regions for resistance in the source population is crucial. In the present investigation, 202 rice genotypes were phenotyped and assayed with genomic markers reported for gall midge resistance. Positive skewness and platykurtic distribution of response scores suggested the inheritance of gall midge resistance in the study population. The marker gm3del3 contributed the most genetic variation, followed by RM28574 and marker RM22709 explained minimal variation. A marker-trait association analysis with a single marker-trait linear regression approach was performed to discover gall midge resistant genomic region/genes. The marker RM17480 on chromosome 4 reported to be linked with gm3 gene was found significantly associated with the gall midge resistance genomic region with allelic effects in a negative direction favouring resistance reaction. The allelic effects of significantly associated markers were correlated significantly with the phenotypic variation of gall midge damage scores. Genes identified in the vicinity of this marker contribute to stress response reactions in rice plants. The 200 bp allele of the marker was associated with susceptibility, while the 250 bp allele was associated with resistance expression. This allelic association with trait variation suggests the importance of associated marker for utilisation in marker-assisted selection programmes to incorporate resistance alleles into elite rice genotypes. 相似文献

Chromosomes and Ti plasmids of 41 Agrobacterium strains, belonging to biovars 1, 2, 3, and Agrobacterium rubi species were characterized by the restriction fragment length polymorphism of PCR-amplified DNAs. Profiles that were obtained by the analysis of the amplified 16S rDNA confirmed the grouping of the strains according to their species. Higher polymorphism was detected in the intergenic spacer between the 16S rDNA and 23S rDNA genes, allowing efficient discrimination of strains. Identification of most strains was possible, and the genetic relatednesses of Agrobacterium strains could be estimated. The analysis of the plasmid Ti encoded regions between the tmr and nos genes, and the virA and virB2 genes, allowed fingerprinting of Ti plasmids. Genomic typing by the rapid PCR-RFLP method is thus shown to be useful for an independant identification of strains and of the conjugative Ti plasmids.Abbreviations PCR

1. The specificity of the auxin transport system of suspension-cultured crown gall cells from Parthenocissus tricuspidata Planch- is examined with regard to 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4 D), l-Naphthylacetic acid (NAA) and Benzoic acid (BA) as well as for indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). — 2. All four weak acids can be accumulated by the cells from a medium more acidic than the cytoplasm. This is by virtue of non-specific passive diffusion of their lipid-soluble protonated forms down a concentration gradient. The corresponding anionic species are much less permeant. The extent of the accumulation is dependent on the pH difference that is maintained by the cells between their cytoplasm and the incubation medium. Studies of the concentration dependence of BA and NAA net uptake at a series of external pHs suggest that an acidification of the cytoplasm can be eventually brought about by the entry of weak acid into the cells. — 3. The uptake of 2,4 D, as well as that of IAA, has a saturable carrier-mediated component in addition to the passive diffusion of the undissociated acid. These saturable components probably represent anion uptake and appear to be mediated by a common carrier. The kinetic studies provided no evidence for the participation of carriers in the transport of BA or NAA. — 4. It was shown that the efflux of 2,4 D also has a carrier-mediated component and it is suggested that both the influx and efflux of IAA and 2,4 D occur on a common carrier. — 5. The inhibitor of polar auxin transport, 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), stimulates the net uptake of IAA by inhibiting carrier-mediated efflux of IAA from the cells. However, TIBA could not be demonstrated to have a significant effect on 2,4 D transport and any perturbation that occurs is very small in comparison with its effect on IAA movement. To account for this, the proposed common carrier could exhibit some difference in its internal binding characteristics betweend 2,4 D and IAA. An alternative explanation is that a second carrier is present, which mediates IAA efflux only, and which is inhibited by TIBA. — 6. TIBA has no significant effect on the transport of either BA or NAA, except to bring about an inhibition of net uptake, and a corresponding stimulation of efflux, when it is present at concentrations sufficient to acidify the cytoplasm. —7. The crown gall cells are compared to intact plant tissues capable of polar auxin transport with regard to the specificities exhibited for the transport of the auxins IAA, 2,4 D and NAA and the non-auxin BA.Abbreviations IAA

Plant cells transformed into octopine-synthesizing tumour cells by the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens survive when cultured in the presence of homo-arginine (HA), whereas both normal plant cells and nopaline producing plant tumour cells do not. Survival of octopine crown gall cells is due to the activity of the enzyme lysopinedehydrogenase (LpDH) in these cells, which converts toxic homo-arginine into non-toxic homo-octopine. The selective toxicity of homo-arginine for normal cells can be applied for the enrichment of octopine Ti plasmid transformed plant cells vs normal plant cells in mixed cultures. 相似文献
