  • Studies of floral polymorphisms have focused on heterostyly, while stigma‐height dimorphism has received considerably less attention. Few studies have examined the reproductive biology of species with stigma‐height dimorphism to understand how factors influencing mate availability and pollen transfer are related to morph ratios in populations.
  • Floral morphological traits, especially herkogamy and reciprocity, pollinator visitation, breeding system and spatiotemporal mate availability, are known to affect inter‐morph pollination and morph ratios in species with stigma‐height dimorphism. In this study, we investigated the presence of stigma‐height dimorphism and estimated morph ratios in four naturally occurring populations of Jasminum malabaricum. We quantified morph‐ and population‐specific differences in the abovementioned factors in these populations to understand the observed morph ratios.
  • The positions of anthers and stigmas were characteristic of stigma‐height dimorphism, the first report of this polymorphism in the genus. All study populations were isoplethic, implying equal fitness of both morphs. Herkogamy was higher in the short‐styled morph, while reciprocity was higher between the long‐styled stigma and short‐styled anthers. Long‐ and short‐tongued pollinators were common floral visitors, and we observed no differences between morphs in spatiotemporal mate availability or pollinator visitation. Neither morph exhibited self‐ or heteromorphic incompatibility.
  • The short‐styled stigma had lower reciprocity but likely receives sufficient inter‐morph pollen from long‐tongued pollinators, and also by avoiding self‐pollination due to higher herkogamy. These results highlight the importance of sufficient effective pollinators and floral morphological features, particularly herkogamy, in maintaining isoplethy in species with stigma‐height dimorphism.

In 1985 we resurveyed the sites on the Marlborough Downs in southern England at which Cain and Currey in 1960/61 sampled Cepaea snails and thence introduced the term 'area effects' to describe large areas of uniform morph frequency. Some sites no longer harboured Cepaea and at others the species composition had changed, with a general spread of Cepaea hortensis at the expense of Cepaea nemoralis. The majority, however, permitted comparison of morph frequencies between the two surveys. In C. nemoralis, we detected a significant overall decrease in the frequency of the brown morph and estimate selection as 5–9% per generation. There was no apparent change in frequencies of banded morphs. In C. hortensis we detected a significant overall increase in the frequency of unbanded shells (1–3% selection per generation) and an almost significant decrease in the frequency of fusions within the banded class. There was insufficient colour polymorphism in C. hortensis to allow analysis of colour morph frequencies. These changes—all in the direction of reduced absorption of solar energy—resemble others detected in both species at other localities in southern England. Possible explanations include large-scale climatic effects and changes in vegetation.  相似文献

Although the locations of many common deletion variants in the human genome are unknown, such deletions may be causative in rare disorders. Deletions can be mapped through the identification of Mendelian inconsistencies in pedigrees. Data for a total of 341,577 SNPs from an ACD family cohort (n = 551) and 341,039 SNPs from a Korean-Vietnamese family cohort (n = 554) were collected for a genome-wide association study using Illumina 370K-Duo Beadchips®. In the present study, a Mendelian inconsistency analysis of genotype data identified 1029 deletion variants in Korean and Korean-Vietnam family cohorts of 404 trios comprising 1105 individuals. Small-deletion copy number variations adjacent to 10 deletion variants were then validated by the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The expected copy numbers of each deletion variant were directly matched to its genotype cluster image. Deletion variants were also in strong linkage disequilibrium with nearby SNPs. To determine the overall contribution of the 1029 deletion variants, we analyzed case-control trio associations with the risk for Avellino corneal dystrophy. One SNP marker (rs885945) neighboring the gene encoding major histocompatibility complex class I F (HLA-F) was significantly associated with the risk of Avellino corneal dystrophy (P = 0.0003). rs885945 showed high LD with SNPs within the HLA-F gene. Therefore, HLA-F may be a potential candidate gene for Avellino corneal dystrophy.  相似文献

Quantitative genetic variation in the glyoxalase-1 content (QGlo-1) of red cells of mice is described. Its genetic control is shown to be exerted by either the Glo-1 locus or a closely linked gene to the left of H-2K. Protein aggregation is a widespread phenomenon with important implications in many scientific areas. Although amyloid formation is typically considered as detrimental, functional amyloids that perform physiological roles have been identified in all kingdoms of life. Despite their functional and pathological relevance, the structural details of the majority of molecular species involved in the amyloidogenic process remains elusive. Here, we explore the application of AlphaFold, a highly accurate protein structure predictor, in the field of protein aggregation. While we envision a straightforward application of AlphaFold in assisting the design of globular proteins with improved solubility for biomedical and industrial purposes, the use of this algorithm for predicting the structure of aggregated species seems far from trivial. First, in amyloid diseases, the presence of multiple amyloid polymorphs and the heterogeneity of aggregation intermediates challenges the “one sequence, one structure” paradigm, inherent to sequence-based predictions. Second, aberrant aggregation is not the subject of positive selective pressure, precluding the use of evolutionary-based approaches, which are the core of the AlphaFold pipeline. Instead, amyloid polymorphism seems to be constrained by the need for a defined structure-activity relationship in functional amyloids. They may thus provide a starting point for the application of AlphaFold in the amyloid landscape.  相似文献

Sociality is primarily a coordination problem. However, the social (or communication) complexity hypothesis suggests that the kinds of information that can be acquired and processed may limit the size and/or complexity of social groups that a species can maintain. We use an agent-based model to test the hypothesis that the complexity of information processed influences the computational demands involved. We show that successive increases in the kinds of information processed allow organisms to break through the glass ceilings that otherwise limit the size of social groups: larger groups can only be achieved at the cost of more sophisticated kinds of information processing that are disadvantageous when optimal group size is small. These results simultaneously support both the social brain and the social complexity hypotheses.  相似文献

1. Genetic polymorphisms of flowering plants can influence pollinator foraging but it is not known whether heritable foraging polymorphisms of pollinators influence their pollination efficacies. Honey bees Apis mellifera L. visit cranberry flowers for nectar but rarely for pollen when alternative preferred flowers grow nearby. 2. Cranberry flowers visited once by pollen‐foraging honey bees received four‐fold more stigmatic pollen than flowers visited by mere nectar‐foragers (excluding nectar thieves). Manual greenhouse pollinations with fixed numbers of pollen tetrads (0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32) achieved maximal fruit set with just eight pollen tetrads. Pollen‐foraging honey bees yielded a calculated 63% more berries than equal numbers of non‐thieving nectar‐foragers, even though both classes of forager made stigmatic contact. 3. Colonies headed by queens of a pollen‐hoarding genotype fielded significantly more pollen‐foraging trips than standard commercial genotypes, as did hives fitted with permanently engaged pollen traps or colonies containing more larvae. Pollen‐hoarding colonies together brought back twice as many cranberry pollen loads as control colonies, which was marginally significant despite marked daily variation in the proportion of collected pollen that was cranberry. 4. Caloric supplementation of matched, paired colonies failed to enhance pollen foraging despite the meagre nectar yields of individual cranberry flowers. 5. Heritable behavioural polymorphisms of the honey bee, such as pollen‐hoarding, can enhance fruit and seed set by a floral host (e.g. cranberry), but only if more preferred pollen hosts are absent or rare. Otherwise, honey bees' broad polylecty, flight range, and daily idiosyncrasies in floral fidelity will obscure specific pollen‐foraging differences at a given floral host, even among paired colonies in a seemingly uniform agricultural setting.  相似文献

Trifolium repens L. and Trifolium nigrescens Viv. are two of the approximately six cyanogenic species known in the genus Trifolium. The two species are closely related: T. nigrescens is considered to be one of the diploid ancestors of the amphidiploid T. repens . We studied morphology, meiosis and the cyanogenic system in T. repens (amphidiploid), T. nigrescens (diploid) and their reciprocal hybrids. A comparison of the enzyme linamarase in the species and hybrids shows that there is a general resemblance between their linamarases. Immunological studies indicate that the linamarases must have a somewhat different three-dimensional structure. These facts are consistent with the view that T. nigrescens (or an ancestral form of this species) has donated the Li gene of T. repens . The other putative parent, T. occidentale has probably not donated an active Li gene. The hypothesis of the origin of the Li gene does not explain its polymorphism in European populations of T. repens , as T. nigrescens is monomorphic for cyanogenesis and amphidiploids do not segregate for genes which are homozygous dominant in one of the parents. Segregation for Li could be caused by a gene mutation or a small exchange between homeologous chromosomes. The latter event is more probable. A nigrescens-repens exchange would give rise to a chromosomal region with reduced homology to both parental chromosomes. The genes in the region of exchange will be tightly linked due to diminished cross-over frequency. It has been known for years that Li has effects on the vegetative and reproductive characters in T. repens and we have recently shown that these effects must be the result of genes linked to Li . As the associated characters influence the fitness of the cyanotypes, not only the origin but also the maintenance of the cyanogenic polymorphism is closely related to the evolutionary history of T. repens .  相似文献

1. Alba, a white wing colour morph of butterflies of the genus Colias , makes fitness-related changes at several levels of phenotypic organization: physiology, development and behaviour. Two sympatric species of Colias are studied, which differ greatly in their frequency of alba vs its sister yellow/orange morph. How resource and time constraints on Colias interact with the morphs' different patterns of pupal resource allocation to alter the balance of the morphs' fitness components in the two species is discussed.
2. These species, C. alexandra and C. scudderi , differ in melanin-based solar energy absorption, in larval dietary richness and in local adult nectar resources. The two female morphs determine alternate thermal balance, internal resource allocation and behavioural effects in each species, thus changing the morphs' time budgets and fitness-component impacts between the species. In particular, female egg output differences between the morphs appears to reverse between species: alba fecundity is greater than yellow fecundity in C. scudderi , but alba is less than yellow in C. alexandra .
3. These differences are consistent with the large observed differences in alba frequency between the species. Some important questions about the selective regime maintaining a polymorphism here, rather than an alternation of monomorphisms, remain.  相似文献

Start Codon Targeted markers were used to establish phylogenetic relationship among seven species from Citrus L. genus. Twelve SCoT primers were used for their ability to reveal polymorphism of the targeted codon of initiation. A total of 132 amplicons were generated and 93.9% of them were polymorphic. The polymorphism information content of 0.884 and the resolving power of 75.22 illustrate the efficiency of the tested SCoT primers in highlighting polymorphism. The average Nei's (1973) gene diversity (0.376), the Schannon's index (0.548) and the Gst parameter (0.346) describe an important polymorphism at the interspecies level in Citrus genus. Analysis of molecular variance suggested significant genetic differences within species. In fact, 84% of variance occurs within the species, whereas 16% of the variation was recorded among the species of Citrus. The limited gene flow (Nm = 0.941) was recognized as a major factor to explain the partition of the observed diversity. The principal coordinates analyses, Neighbor Joining and the Bayesian clustering approach based on the SCoT markers also confirm the discrimination of the species of Citrus. Our results confirm the relevance and suggest the effectiveness of the SCoT markers for assessing genetic diversity, characterization and identification of the species of Citrus.  相似文献
