1. Ecological trade‐offs in ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) assemblages and their implications for coexistence boast a rich history in entomology. Yet investigations of trade‐offs have largely been limited to homogeneous environments. We examined how environmental context modifies trade‐off expression in an ant assemblage spanning a heterogeneous region in central Florida, U.S.A. 2. We examined how trade‐off expression is altered among two contrasting habitat types: open shrub and forest. We tested for the presence of the dominance‐discovery trade‐off and two dominance‐thermal tolerance trade‐offs by estimating behavioral dominance, discovery ability, and thermal tolerance (foraging thermal limit, lethal temperature, and maximal abundance temperature) for a wide range of interacting ant species. 3. We found significantly linear dominance hierarchies in both shrub and forest habitats, showing dominant species out‐compete subordinates for food resources. In thermally stressful shrub habitats, subordinates exhibit higher thermal tolerances, take greater thermal risks, and reach maximum forager abundances at higher temperatures than do dominant species. This suggests temperature mediated trade‐offs control coexistence in shrub habitat. In thermally moderate forest habitat, we found limited evidence for trade‐offs between competitive dominance and resource discovery or between dominance and thermal traits, implying other processes control coexistence. These results demonstrate that trade‐offs controlling ant coexistence may be contingent on environmental context.  相似文献

The chemicals being dispersed on the earth should be carefully controlled to prevent adverse effects. Bioassay is one of the methods to assess chemical safety. In bioassay systems, chemical safety is estimated by monitoring biological responses to environmental pollutants and newly synthesized chemicals. This report introduces multiple-end-point bioassay systems that are based on chemical sensitivities of microorganisms, responses of one kind of organism, and micro-array technology. Multiple-end-point bioassays enable the prediction of chemicals in the environment and the understanding of toxicities of newly synthesized chemicals.  相似文献

In synchronized trampolining, two gymnasts perform the same routine at the same time. While trained gymnasts are thought to coordinate their own movements with the movements of another gymnast by detecting relevant movement information, the question arises how visual and auditory information contribute to the emergence of synchronicity between both gymnasts. Therefore the aim of this study was to examine the role of visual and auditory information in the emergence of coordinated behaviour in synchronized trampolining. Twenty female gymnasts were asked to synchronize their leaps with the leaps of a model gymnast, while visual and auditory information was manipulated. The results revealed that gymnasts needed more leaps to reach synchronicity when only either auditory (12.9 leaps) or visual information (10.8 leaps) was available, as compared to when both auditory and visual information was available (8.1 leaps). It is concluded that visual and auditory information play significant roles in synchronized trampolining, whilst visual information seems to be the dominant source for emerging behavioural synchronization, and auditory information supports this emergence.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The mating behaviour of experimentally produced gynandromorphs of the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori L., were observed. Of 232 gynandromorphs, thirty-two showed unusual bisexual behaviours. The bisexual behaviours were classified into four behavioural types: 'dual personality', 'schizophrenic', 'intersexual' and 'sequence-crossed'. The dual personality gynandromorphs behaved like a male at one time and like a female at another. The schizophrenics displayed male and female behaviours simultaneously in different parts of their body. The intersexuals showed a mixed type of male and female behaviours. The sequence-crossed animals performed the wrong sexual behaviour (e.g. female) in the context of one sex (e.g. male) when the behaviour of the other sex (i.e. male) would normally have been appropriate. These bisexual behaviours are discussed in terms of sensory and neural mechanisms.  相似文献

Generalist predatory paper wasps, Polistes dominulus, experience plant secondary defensive compounds as developing larvae through their herbivorous lepidopteran caterpillar prey and as adults through attacking caterpillars while foraging. We evaluated the role that larval and early adult experience with unpalatable prey plays in subsequent foraging choices by adult wasps. For periods of two or four weeks, caged wasps were raised exclusively on caterpillars of either unpalatable Buckeye, Junonia coenia, that sequester substantial levels of iridoid glycosides (IG) or on Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui, that contain very low levels of IG. Wasps were then allowed to forage on both caterpillar species simultaneously. Patterns of prey capture differed significantly based on previous prey experience. Regardless of previous feeding experience, adult wasps overwhelmingly preferred to take Vanessa. Yet Junonia-experienced wasps continued to attack and take back to the nest over 50% more Junonia than did Vanessa-experienced wasps. The longer the wasps' larval experience with Junonia, the more likely they were to capture Junonia caterpillars. However, the life stage at which the wasps experienced Junonia was also influential as young adult experience with the unpalatable prey was more of a deterrent than was experience strictly as larvae for Junonia-experienced wasps. The results demonstrate that, in these predators, previous experience with deterrent chemicals during their larval development alters patterns of prey acceptability to the adult insects.  相似文献

Microtopography is one of several strategies used by marine organisms to inhibit colonization by fouling organisms. While replicates of natural microtextures discourage settlement, details of larval interactions with the structured surfaces remain scarce. Close-range microscopy was used to quantify the exploration of cyprids of Amphibalanus amphitrite on cylindrical micropillars with heights of 5 and 30 μm and diameters ranging from 5 to 100 μm. While 5 μm-high structures had little impact, 30 μm-high pillars significantly influenced cyprid exploration. An observed step length decrease and step duration increase on 5 μm diameter pillars is attributed to the small dimensions of the voids excluding the cyprid's attachment disc and consequently reducing the area of adhesive contact. When exploring larger diameter pillars, cyprids preferred using the voids to form temporary attachment points. This may enhance their resistance to flow. No-choice assay settlement patterns mirrored this exploration behaviour, albeit in a pattern counter to what was predicted.  相似文献

Robust reproductive isolation was found between the rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum and the orangethroat darter Etheostoma spectabile, as more offspring were produced when conspecific males and females were crossed as compared with heterospecific crosses. Furthermore, fewer eggs resulted from heterospecific crosses involving sympatric E. spectabile females than those using allopatric E. spectabile females, while a similar pattern was not observed in heterospecific crosses using E. caeruleum females. These results suggest that reinforcement, i.e. selection for pre‐zygotic reproductive barriers driven by reduced hybrid fitness, may have contributed to the evolution and maintenance of reproductive barriers between these potentially hybridizing species in sympatry.  相似文献

Abstract

As materials intended to be brought into contact with food, food contact materials (FCMs) – including plastics, paper or inks – can transfer their constituents to food under normal or foreseeable use, including direct or indirect food contact. The safety of FCMs in the EU is evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) using risk assessment rules. Results of independent, health-based chemical risk assessments are crucial for the decision-making process to authorize the use of substances in FCMs. However, the risk assessment approach used in the EU has several shortcomings that need to be improved in order to ensure consumer health protection from exposure arising from FCMs. This article presents the use of meta-analysis as a useful tool in chronic risk assessment for substances migrating from FCMs. Meta-analysis can be used for the review and summary of research of FCMs safety in order to provide a more accurate assessment of the impact of exposure with increased statistical power, thus providing more reliable data for risk assessment. The article explains a common methodology of conducting a meta-analysis based on meta-analysis of the dose-effect relationship of cadmium for benchmark dose evaluations performed by EFSA.  相似文献
