Biological information on the species of the large carpenter bee Xylocopa
subgenus
Schonnherria occurring in Argentina is revised. Based on the appraisal of museum specimens, the study of type material, and field surveys conducted across 15 provinces between 2007 and 2011, the following seven species are recognized for the country: Xylocopa
bambusae Schrottky, Xylocopa
chrysopoda Schrottky, Xylocopa
macrops Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau, Xylocopa
simillima Smith Xylocopa
splendidula Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau, Xylocopa

boops Maidl was described from a male specimen with unusually enlarged eyes and is newly synonymized under Xylocopa
macrops. Males and females of all species are diagnosed, described, and figured, including details of the male genitalia. Taxonomic comments, data on the geographical distribution and nesting substrates, and identification keys to all Argentinean species of Schonnherria are provided. The nesting biologies of Xylocopa

Ornamental flowers commonly grown in urban gardens and parks can be of value to flower‐visiting insects. However, there is huge variation in the number of insects attracted among plant varieties. In this study, we quantified the insect attractiveness of 79 varieties in full bloom being grown in a public urban garden that is popular due to its beautiful flowers and other attractions. The results showed very clearly that most varieties (77%, n = 61) were either poorly attractive or completely unattractive to insect flower visitors. Several varieties (19%, n = 15) were moderately attractive, but very few (4%, n = 3) were highly attractive. Closer examination of Dahlia varieties showed that “open” flowered forms were approximately 20 times more attractive than “closed” flowered forms. These results strongly suggest that there is a great potential for making urban parks and gardens considerably more bee‐ and insect‐friendly by selecting appropriate varieties. 相似文献

The small hive beetle (Aethina tumida Murray) is an endemic scavenger in colonies of western honey bee subspecies (Apis mellifera L.) inhabiting sub-Saharan Africa where it only occasionally damages host colonies. Such damage is usually restricted to
weakened/diseased colonies or is associated with after absconding events (all bees, including the queen, leave the hive) due
to behavioral resistance mechanisms of its host. In sharp contrast, the beetle has proven deleterious to honey bee colonies
in introduced ranges of the United States and Australia. With this review we synthesize the existing data in a manner that
allows us to discuss the beetle’s natural history from an ecological perspective. A thorough exploration of beetle ecology
allows us to 1) illuminate the unique symbiotic relationship it and its host share and understand how this relationship is
fostered, 2) place this relationship in context with those of other arthropods inhabiting social insect colonies, 3) understand
its natural reliance on honey bee colonies, 4) predict its spread outside its native range, and 5) predict its effects on
non-African honey bees and non-target species. Here we present an amalgamation of information that will contribute to a more
thorough and appropriate understanding of not only small hive beetles as symbionts, but of social insect symbionts in general.

Rain forest promotes trophic interactions and diversity of trap-nesting Hymenoptera in adjacent agroforestry 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
1. Human alteration of natural ecosystems to agroecosystems continues to accelerate in tropical countries. The resulting world-wide decline of rain forest causes a mosaic landscape, comprising simple and complex agroecosystems and patchily distributed rain forest fragments of different quality. Landscape context and agricultural management can be expected to affect both species diversity and ecosystem services by trophic interactions. 2. In Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, 24 agroforestry systems, differing in the distance to the nearest natural forest (0-1415 m), light intensity (37.5-899.6 W/m(-2)) and number of vascular plant species (7-40 species) were studied. Ten standardized trap nests for bees and wasps, made from reed and knotweed internodes, were exposed in each study site. Occupied nests were collected every month, over a period totalling 15 months. 3. A total of 13,617 brood cells were reared to produce adults of 14 trap-nesting species and 25 natural enemy species, which were mostly parasitoids. The total number of species was affected negatively by increasing distance from forest and increased with light intensity of agroforestry systems. The parasitoids in particular appeared to benefit from nearby forests. Over a 500-m distance, the number of parasitoid species decreased from eight to five, and parasitism rates from 12% to 4%. 4. The results show that diversity and parasitism, as a higher trophic interaction and ecosystem service, are enhanced by (i) improved connectivity of agroecosystems with natural habitats such as agroforestry adjacent to rain forest and (ii) management practices to increase light availability in agroforestry, which also enhances richness of flowering plants in the understorey. 相似文献

We recorded nesting data at 569 fresh night nest sites, comprising 7032 individual nests, of Cross River gorillas inhabiting
the Kagwene Mountain in western Cameroon. The mean night nest group size was 12.4. Overall, 55% of night nests were constructed
on the ground and 45% in trees. Significantly more arboreal nests were constructed in the wet season (69%), vs. the dry season
(19%). Day nest construction was common at Kagwene (n = 260 nest sites, mean nest group size = 5.98) and we encountered significantly more day nest sites in the wet season. Nest
site reuse was also common (35%), though not related to season. Our results of nesting habits concur with those from other
western gorilla studies, in which rainfall influences arboreal nesting. However, we encountered wet season arboreal nesting,
day nest construction, and overall nest site reuse more frequently than reported for other sites. Our observations have considerable
implications when estimating group size and density using traditional nest count data. The gorillas at Kagwene inhabit the
highest altitudinal range of all Cross River gorilla subpopulations and rainfall is also high; therefore other subpopulations
may demonstrate different nesting characteristics. However, one should consider our findings when attempting to estimate Cross
River gorilla density at other localities through nest site data. 相似文献

Eight microsatellite primers were developed from ISSR (intersimple sequence repeats) markers for the stingless bee Melipona rufiventris. These primers were tested in 20 M. rufiventris workers, representing a single population from Minas Gerais state. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 5 (mean = 2.63) and the observed and expected heterozygosity values ranged from 0.00 to 0.44 (mean = 0.20) and from 0.05 to 0.68 (mean = 0.31), respectively. Several loci were also polymorphic in M. quadrifasciata, M. bicolor, M. mandacaia and Partamona helleri and should prove useful in population studies of other stingless bees. 相似文献

Aim This study aimed to evaluate the probability of suitable habitats in the USA for two adventive orchid bee species (Eulaema polychroma (Mocsáry) and Euglossa viridissima Friese), one of which has become established in southern Florida despite the absence of its associated orchid hosts. Location North and Central America, northern South America and the Caribbean. Methods Using positive occurrence data within the native range of both orchid bee species, Maxent species distribution modelling was employed to evaluate the probability of suitable habitats in the USA. The power of predictability for the model was tested using partitions of the data. Results Our results show the absence of suitable habitat in southern Arizona for E. polychroma to maintain populations there, as well as establishing the northernmost limit for the species at around 29°N in north‐western Mexico. Suitable habitat was found for E. viridissima in various locations throughout southern Florida. This species is predicted to spread to occupy roughly the southern half of the Florida Peninsula. Main conclusions The findings indicate that species distribution modelling is useful for evaluating records of species occurrence outside of their native range. Our results indicate that the isolated record of a male of E. polychroma from southern Arizona should not be considered representative of an established population in the absence of further males and females from the same region. Conversely, E. viridissima has successfully become established in south‐eastern Florida after a seemingly accidental introduction first noticed in the summer of 2003. We discuss the naturalization of E. viridissima in Florida, the probability of suitable habitat across the Caribbean (where orchid bees are otherwise natively absent today) and the absence of perfume orchids (Orchidaceae). Lastly, we discuss the implications of these results for understanding the biology and biogeography of Euglossini. 相似文献

Four colonies of the stingless bee Partamona cupira (Hymenoptera: Apidae) were cytogenetically analyzed using conventional staining and the fluorochromes CMA(3) e DAPI. The females have 2n = 34 chromosomes (2K = 32 Mˉ+2 Aˉ). Some females, however, presented an additional large B acrocentric chromosome, to a total of 2n = 35. Chromosome B and the chromosomal pairs 2, 9 and 10 showed CMA (3) (+) bands, indicating an excess of CG base-pairs. A clear association was verified between the P. helleri B chromosome SCAR marker and the presence of a B chromosome in P. cupira. The data obtained suggests that B chromosomes in P. helleri and P. cupira share a common origin. 相似文献
