Socio‐ecological theory predicts that group fusion in female‐philopatric primate species will be rare because females experience increased costs by associating with non‐relatives. Indeed, fusion has been reported only 14 times in only 4 female‐philopatric cercopithecines despite many years of observation. Here, we describe changes in ranging and agonistic behavior of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) after the fusion of two groups, the sole group fusion during 11 years of observation, induced by a brief but intense period of apparent leopard predation. Before fusion, both groups made few incursions into the other group's territory and spent most of the time in their own territories. After the fusion, the amalgamated group shifted its activities and used both territories in similar proportion. Rates of female agonism increased after fusion, particularly in the 2 weeks following fusion, and the small group females assumed the lowest ranks in the female dominance hierarchy. Rates of agonism returned to prefusion rates a month later. Although rates of high‐intensity interactions (i.e., chases) did not increase after fusion, small group females were more likely to be the recipients of, and lose, agonistic interactions than large group females; a small group female and her infant were attacked and wounded by a coalition of large group females shortly after the fusion. The observations presented here reveal that the circumstances surrounding group fusions are more variable than previously realized, but are still in accordance with expectations from socio‐ecological theory that predation can favor the formation of larger groups. The life table characteristics of the polyphagous mirid Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) preying on various stages of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) with tomato as host plant were described at 22 °C. The following average parameters were obtained: Female longevity: 28.7 days; fecundity: 0.7 eggs/female/day; egg mortality: 2.6%; pre-oviposition period: 5.5 days; oviposition period: 18.1 days; post-oviposition period: 3.2 days; juvenile development time: 26.8 days; juvenile mortality: 34.9%; and sex ratio (/(+): 0.46. Life table parameters were estimated as net reproduction rate (R 0): 6.15; intrinsic rate of increase (r m): 0.031 day–1; finite rate of increase (): 1.032; mean generation time (T c): 58.17 days; and doubling time (T 2) 22.2 days. The parameters obtained were in accordance with those reported for M. caliginosus fed on another mite species (T. turkestani Ugarov & Nikolski (Acari: Tetranychidae)). However, compared to the performance of M. caliginosus fed on common glasshouse insect pests, a diet consisting of only mites appeared to be inferior. However, being a voracious predator, M. caliginosus may be a valuable addition to existing methods of mite control.  相似文献

Colominic acid is an 2,8-linked sialic acid polymer produced by Escherichia coli. We found that synthetic sulfated-colominic acids (SC) remarkably inhibited the cytotoxicity of bee and snake venom toward mouse fibroblast cells, but colominic acids showed no inhibition themselves, indicating the important role of sulfate groups in the inhibitory activity of SC. Other sulfated carbohydrates such as chondroitin sulfates, heparin and heparan sulfate showed no inhibition. SC also exhibited potent inhibition of melittin, a highly basic peptide, which is a major cytotoxic component of bee venom. SC did not inhibit phospholipase A2 activity in bee venom. This suggests that the inhibition of bee and snake venom by SC is due to inhibition of melittin and cardiotoxin, which is a cytolytic peptide in snake venom, respectively. SC with a higher sulfur content and a larger molecular mass showed more potent activity. The interaction between SC and melittin basically seems an ionic one, however, the conformation of SC is also likely important. For the binding of SC to melittin leading loss of its cytotoxic activity, the sulfate groups of SC must be properly arranged to interact with lysine and arginine residues of melittin molecules, which play an important role in the cytolytic activity. A higher molecular mass of SC substituted with more sulfate groups is required for more obvious inhibition of the cytotoxic activity.  相似文献

Black seabream, Spondyliosoma cantharus, caught off the Canary Islands is characterized by a protogynous hermaphroditism. The size range of the catches is between 8 and 40cm, with a main distribution between 16 and 24cm. The mean length of the individuals shows an increase with increasing depth. Males:females ratio is unbalanced in favour of females (1:2.18). The reproductive season extends from late autumn to mid spring, with a peak in spawning activity in January–February. A dichromatism is found between males and females during the spawning season. Males reach maturity at a larger total length, 22.7cm (3 years old), than females, 17.3cm (2 years old). Morphometric relationship between length and mass for the whole population is described by the parameters: a=0.00732, and b=3.24747. Otoliths age readings indicate that the exploited population consists of eleven age groups (0–X years), including a very high proportion of individuals between 2 and 3 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the whole population are: L=43.35cm, k=0.24 year–1, and t0=–0.11 year. The rates of total, natural and fishing mortality are 1.36, 0.52 and 0.84 year–1, respectively. The length at first capture is 16.8cm. The exploitation rate indicates that the stock is overfished.  相似文献

The mass mortality of wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata Blyth) was observed in a warm temperate forest of Yakushima, southern Japan. Demographic changes of eight troops between August 1998 and August 1999 were studied and 56% of macaques disappeared from the five intensively studied troops. Mortality varied among troops: two troops became extinct, while another troop did not decrease in size. The rate of mortality of the other troops was between 33 and 80%. The variation in mortality among the troops was either the outcome of local concentrations of mortality or of intertroop competition. The rate of mortality decreased with increasing distance from the two extinct troops and with increasing troop size; these two factors could not be separated statistically. The direct cause of death was diagnosed as pneumonia for four out of five fresh carcasses. The fleshy fruit production in autumn 1998 was the lowest in 14years, and macaques had relied on leaves earlier than in usual years. It was exceptionally hot and dry in the summer of 1998. The exceptionally poor fruit production and hot summer of this year, with the resulting shortage of high-quality foods, was consistent with the scenario that mass mortality was due to the poor nutritional conditions. However, the possibility that epidemics caused the mass mortality cannot be ruled out. Our findings proved that primates in a seemingly stable habitat experience fluctuations in demographic parameters under natural conditions.  相似文献

To clarify consistency in the size of carbon pool of a lowland tropical rainforest, we calculated changes in above-ground biomass in the Pasoh Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia. We estimated the total above-ground biomass of a mature stand using tree census data obtained in a 6-ha plot every 2years from 1994 to 1998. The total above-ground biomass decreased consistently from 1994 (431Mgha–1) to 1998 (403Mgha–1) (1Mg=103 kg). These are much lower than that in 1973 for a 0.2ha portion of the same area, suggesting that the the total above-ground biomass reduction might have been consistent in recent decades. This trend contrasted with a major trend for neotropical forests. During 1994–1998, the forest gained 23.0 and 0.88Mgha–1 of the total above-ground biomass by tree growth and recruitment, respectively, and lost 51.9Mgha–1 by mortality. Overall, the biomass decreased by 28.4Mgha–1 (i.e. 7.10Mgha–1·year–1), which is almost equivalent to losing a 76-cm-diameter living tree per hectare per year. Analysis of positive and negative components of biomass change revealed that deaths of large trees dominated the total above-ground biomass decrease. The forest biomass also varied spatially, with the total above-ground biomass density ranging 212–655Mgha–1 on a 0.2-ha basis (n= 30 subplots, 1998) and 365–440Mgha–1 on a 1ha basis. A large decrease of the total above-ground biomass density (>50Mg per ha per 2years) in several 0.2-ha subplots contributed to the overall decrease in the 6-ha total above-ground biomass. In the present study, we discuss the association between forest dynamics and biomass fluctuation, and the implication for carbon cycling in mature forests with emphasis on forest monitoring and assessments of soil and decomposition systems.  相似文献

Naturally occurring odors used by animals for mate recognition, food identification and other purposes must be detected at concentrations that vary across several orders of magnitude. Olfactory systems must therefore have the capacity to represent odors over a large range of concentrations regardless of dramatic changes in the salience, or perceived intensity, of a stimulus. The stability of the representation of an odor relative to other odors across concentration has not been extensively evaluated. We tested the ability of honey bees to discriminate pure odorants across a range of concentrations at and above their detection threshold. Our study showed that pure odorant compounds became progressively easier for honey bees to discriminate with increasing concentration. Discrimination is, therefore, a function of odorant concentration. We hypothesize that the recruitment of sensory cell populations across a range of concentrations may be important for odor coding, perhaps by changing its perceptual qualities or by increasing its salience against background stimuli, and that this mechanism is a general property of olfactory systems.  相似文献

We examined the effects of Nosema bombi (Microsporidia: Nosematidae) on colonies of bumble bees, Bombus occidentalis Greene (Hymenoptera: Apidae), used to pollinate tomatoes in commercial greenhouses. We assessed methods of detecting N. bombi and tested the effectiveness of fumagillin to control this parasite. N. bombi did not affect adult population size or amount of brood in B. occidentalis colonies. Fumagillin was not effective against N. bombi at the doses we tested, and frass samples did not provide accurate estimates of the intensity of N. bombi infections. The number of N. bombi spores per bee was highly variable among bumble bees within colonies, and accurate estimates could only be obtained by sampling a large proportion of bees in each colony. Therefore, whole bee and frass sampling is useful for determining if N. bombi is present or absent, but not for obtaining accurate estimates of the intensity of N. bombi infections.  相似文献

Climatic conditions may impact on the body condition of animals and thereby affect their survival prospects. However, climate may also impact directly on the survival prospects of animals by affecting the size of immune defence organs that are used for defence against parasites. We used a large long-term database on body condition and size of the spleen in birds to test for immediate and delayed relationships between climatic conditions as indexed by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and body condition and spleen mass, respectively. Across 14 species of birds, spleen mass was significantly positively correlated with the NAO index, while the delayed effect of NAO on spleen mass was not significant. Spleen mass was positively related to body condition, but body condition did not depend significantly on NAO or delayed NAO effects. Bird species with a strong positive effect of NAO on spleen mass tended to have small spleens for their body size, while species with a strong negative effect of NAO on spleen mass tended to have relatively large spleens. Since bird species with relatively large spleen have been shown to suffer more from the negative effects of parasites, we can infer that the effects of climate as indexed by NAO on the size of the spleen depends on the importance of parasite-mediated natural selection.Due to an error in the citation line, this revised PDF (published in December 2003) deviates from the printed version, and is the correct and authoritative version of the paper.  相似文献

Recent studies in honeybees have demonstrated that, when odor-evoked action potentials in antennal lobe neurons are pharmacologically desynchronized, the bees are impaired in their ability to discriminate chemically similar odor stimuli. Using a reduced computational model of the honeybee antennal lobe, we show how changes in spike-synchronization properties alone, independent of changes in overall spike-discharge rate or differences in activity levels among responsive neurons, can produce changes in associative learning similar to those observed experimentally.  相似文献
