Abstract. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative importance of small-scale variation in abiotic factors and large-scale spatio-temporal variation on the distribution of wetland vegetation of a section of the Upper St. Lawrence River in Québec. Vegetation data have been classified with agglomerative clustering into 11 community types, from Acer rubrum, Acer saccharinum and Fraxinus swamps, to scrubs dominated by Salix petiolaris, Alnus rugosa var. americana or Myrica gale, to Typha, Typha/Lythrum, Carex lacustris and Calamagrostis canadensis marshes. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CANOCO) suggested that peat thickness and water level are the most important abiotic variables correlated with plant community composition. As a whole, small-scale variation accounts for 25.6 % of the species variation. Another 21.6% is explained by large-scale variation based on location data summarizing large-scale spatial distribution, and historical landscape dynamics differentiated into (a) no net loss of wetlands, (b) net loss of wetland, and (c) changes within wetlands, which are correlated with the actual variation in herbaceous and scrubby vegetation. The interaction between small-scale and large-scale variations explains another 1.7 %. In total, 48.9% of the species variation is explained by the two data sets, leaving 51.1% unexplained. Whereas the omission of some abiotic variables is possible, it is hypothesized that the abiotic conditions measured in this study play an important role, especially in the distribution of forested swamps. In addition, past history, particularly that of human interventions, becomes another important factor leading to the observed importance of large-scale spatio-temporal variables. This is particularly true for Alnus rugosa var. americana shrublands. Time lag between a relative stabilization of species distribution and the reduction of natural disturbances (water level fluctuations and fires) could be a possible cause of the importance of spatio-temporal variables and the undetermined portion of species variation.  相似文献

Abstract. In order to explain conifer species recruitment in Canada's southeastern boreal forest, we characterized conifer regeneration microsites and determined how these microsites vary in abundance during succession. Microsite abundance was evaluated in deciduous, mixed and coniferous stands along a 234-yr postfire chronosequence. Conifers were most often found in relatively well-illuminated microsites, devoid of litter, especially broad-leaf litter, and with a reduced cover of lower vegetation (< 50 cm tall). Although associated with moss-rich forest floor substrates, Abies balsamea was the most ubiquitously distributed species. Picea glauca and especially Thuja occidentalis seedlings were frequently found on rotten logs. Light measurements did not show differences among seedling species nor between stand types. The percentage cover of broad-leaf litter decreased significantly during succession. Also, rotten logs covered with moss occupied a significantly larger area in the mid-successionnal stands than in early successional deciduous or late successional coniferous stands. The results suggest that the presence of specific forest floor substrate types is a factor explaining low conifer recruitment under deciduous stands, conifer codominance in the mid-successional stage, and delayed Thuja recolonization after fire. Results also suggest that some facilitation mechanism is responsible for the observed directional succession.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study is to determine the factors responsible for the distribution of Pinus resinosa (red pine) at its northern limit in northwestern Québec. Pinus resinosa is found only on islands and protected lake shores at its northern distribution boundary. The influence of climate on the germination of P. resinosa seed and on the phenology of P. resinosa was investigated in the Lake Duparquet region of northwestern Québec. The results indicate that P. resinosa seed readily germinates at island- and inland sites, which indicates that germination is not responsible for the distribution of P. resinosa in the Lake Duparquet region. Also, cones and seeds developed normally at island sites and an inland plantation, which suggests that seed production is not hindering the expansion of P. resinosa. These results, together with other studies in the literature, suggest that no climatic factor could explain the present distribution of P. resinosa nor its northern limit. The fire regime appears to be responsible for the restriction of P. resinosa to lake environments and hinders the northward expansion of P. resinosa. The typical crown fire regime of the boreal forest is not conducive for P. resinosa regeneration and restricts the species to fire-sheltered locations such as islands and protected lake shores.  相似文献

The presence of adenosine receptors coupled to adenylate cyclase in cultured cardiocytes from atria and ventricles from neonatal rats is demonstrated in these studies. N-Ethylcarboxamideadenosine (NECA), l-N6-phenylisopropyladenosine (PIA), and 2-chloroadenosine (2-cl-Ado) stimulated adenylate cyclase in a concentration-dependent manner in both cultured atrial and ventricular cells. The order of potency of stimulation was NECA > PIA > 2-cl-Ado. The stimulation of adenylate cyclase by NECA was enhanced by guanine nucleotides and was blocked by 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine in both these cells. Other agonists such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, F?, and forskolin were also able to stimulate adenylate cyclase, although the extent of stimulation by these agents was higher in ventricular than in atrial cells. The stimulation of adenylate cyclase by epinephrine and norepinephrine was inhibited by propranolol but not by phentolamine. On the other hand, phentolamine, propranolol, and haloperidol inhibited dopamine-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity to the same extent. Forskolin, at its maximal concentration, potentiated the stimulatory effect of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine on adenylate cyclase in both atrial and ventricular cardiocytes, but the interaction of NECA with epinephrine, norepinephrine, or dopamine was different in atrial and ventricular cells. The stimulation by an optimal concentration of NECA was additive with maximal stimulation by the catecholamines in atrial cells but not in ventricular cells. The data suggest the existence of adenosine “Ra” and catecholamine receptors in cultured atrial and ventricular cardiocytes. It can be postulated that adenosine in addition to its role as a potent vasodilator might regulate cardiac performance through its interaction with “Ra” receptors associated with adenylate cyclase. The difference in the mode of interaction of adenosine with catecholamines in atrial and ventricular cells suggests that the mechanism by which these agents activate adenylate cyclase may be different in these cells.  相似文献

Debris slide occurrence on treed slopes of northeastern North America is still poorly documented, despite their abundance and their potential to change mountainous landscapes in short periods of time. To provide new information on their spatiotemporal dynamics, a study was undertaken in debris slide paths in the Wildlife Reserve of Port-Cartier-Sept-Iles, on the Québec North-Shore region of eastern Canada. Tree-ring dating of growth anomalies (impact scars and reaction wood) in nine debris slides allowed the identification of four debris slide events that occurred in 2003, 2006, 2008, and 2010. By comparison to other hillslope processes such as snow avalanches and debris flows, debris slides produce a very strong tree-ring signal. Therefore they do not require a large sample size considering also that they do not occur twice at the same place. The position of growth anomalies within individual tree rings allowed to determine the timing of the debris slide events: injuries located within a ring correspond to debris slides occurring during the growing season, whereas injuries located between the end of a ring and the beginning of the following ring were caused by debris slides occurring during the dormant season. The meteorological data indicate that a daily precipitation of 70 mm appears usually sufficient for the occurrence of debris slides.  相似文献

Several temperate tree species are expected to migrate northward and colonize boreal forests in response to climate change. Tree migrations could lead to transitions in forest types, but these could be influenced by several non‐climatic factors, such as disturbances and soil conditions. We analysed over 10,000 forest inventory plots, sampled from 1970 to 2018 in meridional Québec, Canada, to identify what environmental conditions promote or prevent regional‐scale forest transitions. We used a continuous‐time multi‐state Markov model to quantify the probabilities of transitions between forest states (temperate, boreal, mixed, pioneer) as a function of climate (mean temperature and climate moisture index during the growing season), soil conditions (pH and drainage) and disturbances (severity levels of natural disturbances and logging). We further investigate how different disturbance types and severities impact forests' short‐term transient dynamics and long‐term equilibrium using properties of Markov transition matrices. The most common transitions observed during the study period were from mixed to temperate states, as well as from pioneer to boreal forests. In our study, transitions were mainly driven by natural and anthropogenic disturbances and secondarily by climate, whereas soil characteristics exerted relatively minor constraints. While major disturbances only promoted transitions to the pioneer state, moderate disturbances increased the probability of transition from mixed to temperate states. Long‐term projections of our model under the current environmental conditions indicate that moderate disturbances would promote a northward shift of the temperate forest. Moreover, disturbances reduced turnover and convergence time for all transitions, thereby accelerating forest dynamics. Contrary to our expectation, mixed to temperate transitions were not driven by temperate tree recruitment but by mortality and growth. Overall, our results suggest that moderate disturbances could catalyse rapid forest transitions and accelerate broad‐scale biome shifts.  相似文献

The recent development of peatlandrestoration activities indicates thatmodern peat mining techniques seriouslyhamper the natural capacity of bogecosystems to regenerate after adisturbance. However, some plants have theability to colonize dry peat deposits, andseem to help stabilize the soil surface andfacilitate the establishment of other plantspecies. In this paper, we review studiesregarding the spontaneous regeneration ofombrotrophic peatlands. There are numerousexamples throughout North America andEurope showing that spontaneousrevegetation of mined peatlands by typicalbog plants, and particularly by Sphagnum species, is possible. However,this phenomenon is much more common inblock-cut peatlands than in vacuum-minedsites. The slow recovery of vacuum-minedpeatlands compared to block-cut sites isprobably related to intense drainagenecessary for the use of tractor-drawnvacuum machines. There are some cases,however, where the spontaneous revegetationof vacuum-mined sites is successful,particularly for vascular plants. Thesesites are mainly dominated by cotton-grass(Eriophorum vaginatum L.). Itseems that the microclimatic conditionscreated by cotton-grass tussocks improveestablishment conditions for other vascularand non-vascular plants. Restorationactivities should be minimal in minedpeatlands already invaded by cotton-grass,and spontaneous revegetation processescould and should be integrated intopeatland restoration programs.  相似文献

Studies of the colonization and spread of invasive species improves our understanding of key concepts in population biology as well as informs control and prevention efforts. The characean green alga Nitellopsis obtusa (starry stonewort) is rare in its native Eurasian range but listed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as an aggressive invasive in North America. First documented in North America in 1978 from New York, United States, it has since been reported from numerous inland lakes from Minnesota to Vermont, and from Lake Ontario and inland lakes in southern Ontario, Canada. While the ecological impacts of N. obtusa are not clearly understood in its invasive range, initial results show negative environmental effects. We have discovered a liquid‐preserved herbarium specimen that predates the 1978 records by at least 4 years, and is the first confirmed record of N. obtusa in Québec.  相似文献

Question: Has the vegetation of Sphagnum bogs been affected by more than 200 years of human activities? Location: Bas‐Saint‐Laurent region, southeastern Québec, Canada. Methods: Data (species assemblages, abiotic and spatio‐historical variables) were collected in 16 bogs ranging from 2 to 189 ha, and incorporated in a geographical information system. Major gradients in vegetation composition were identified using DCA. CCA was used to relate vegetation gradients to abiotic and spatio‐historical variables. Results: A clear segregation of species assemblages was observed, from open and undisturbed bogs to forested and highly disturbed sites. Among abiotic factors, tree basal area, water table level and peat thickness had a significant influence on plant species composition. Among spatio‐historical factors, disturbance level, area loss and fire were the most influential factors. Variance partitioning between these groups of factors suggests that spatio‐historical factors had a major influence on peatlands, representing 22% of the variation observed in the plant species assemblages while abiotic factors represent only 17% of the variation. Conclusions: The results highlight the influence of agricultural and other anthropogenic activities on plant assemblages and suggest that even wetlands apparently resistant to disturbances, such as peatlands, can be severely affected by anthropogenic factors. Plant species assemblages of ombrotrophic peatlands of the Bas‐Saint‐Laurent region were, and still are, largely influenced by human activities.  相似文献
