Logbooks ( n = 317) from whaling expeditions made in the North Atlantic during the 19th century were examined to investigate activity in the Gibraltar Straits grounds. At least forty expeditions of whaling vessels from European and American ports visited the area. In all cases the main target was the sperm whale, but pilot whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and even a blue whale were also taken. Whaling effort concentrated on the Atlantic side of the Straits; only two expeditions ventured into the Mediterranean Sea, obtaining negligible catches. The whaling season extended during spring and summer and peaked in June–July. This seasonality appeared not to be governed by changes in whale density but by the trade winds necessary to sail southward or westward to cross the Atlantic. Searching effort continued while trying out, but the rate of sighting cetaceans was about half that of searching periods. However, the rate of sighting or capturing a sperm whale remained unchanged during processing, probably because the gregarious habits of the species produced clumping of catches. For every whale secured, 1.31 whales were struck. After correcting for struck but lost whales and for "gammed" vessels, the minimum number of removals of sperm whales during 1862–1889 is estimated at 237.  相似文献

The relationship between blue whale ( Balaenoptera musculus ) visual and acoustic encounter rates was quantitatively evaluated using hourly counts of detected whales during shipboard surveys off southern California. Encounter rates were estimated using temporal, geographic, and weather variables within a generalized additive model framework. Visual encounters (2.06 animals/h, CV = 0.10) varied with subregion, Julian day, time of day, and year. Acoustic encounters of whales producing pulsed A and tonal B call sequences (song; 0.65 animals/h, CV = 0.06) varied by Julian day, survey mode (transit or stationary), and subregion, and encounters of whales producing downswept (D) calls (0.41 animals/h, CV = 0.09) varied by Julian day and the number of animals seen. Inclusion of Julian day in all models reflects the seasonal occurrence of blue whales off southern California; however, the seasonal peak in visual encounters and acoustic encounters of D calling whales (July–August) was offset from the peak in acoustic encounters of singing whales (August–September). The relationship between visual and acoustic encounter rates varied regionally, with significant differences in several northern regions. The number of whales heard D calling was positively related to the number of animals seen, whereas the number of singing whales was not related to visual encounter rate.  相似文献

The earplugs of several baleen whale stocks exhibit seasonal growth layers which have been shown for some species to indicate the total age of the animals. A transition from early, irregular layers, to later, more regular layers can be seen in these earplugs, and this is thought to indicate the age at maturity of the whale. The earplugs of Southern Hemisphere minke whales are relatively difficult to read, particularly for the age at transition, and it has been suggested that these readings reflect no more than random allocations by the reader, rather than any real effect. Plots of average transition phase against year of birth (cohort) show a decline in the average age at transition. However, certain factors can result in a downward bias in this trend, particularly when only a short time-series is available for analysis, as was the case when this trend was first estimated some 15 yr ago. Data collected over 25 yr are now available and are reanalyzed here. A plot of mean age at transition against year of sampling for animals of similar age shows a decline, as does the conventional plot against cohort, suggesting that the decline is real. A model that simulates random allocation of the transition phase by earplug readers yields predictions that show systematic deviations from the data. In contrast, a second model that allows for a real trend in the average age at transition and that takes account of two potentially biasing effects (termed truncation and the fringe effect) fits the data well. A tendency is evident for readers to recognize a transition phase in a greater proportion of the earplugs that they read as they gain experience over time. This is taken into account in the model. This model shows a decline in the average age at transition from roughly 11 for the cohorts of the 1950s to roughly 7 for those of the 1970s. These results suggest that minke whale transition-phase readings are related to a real signal in the data and are not simply an artefact, and further that there has been a real decline in the age to which this signal corresponds.  相似文献

Site fidelity and movements were studied for humpback whales photo-identified from 1989 to 2006 in the Abrolhos Bank, southwestern Atlantic, Brazil. A total of 2,612 individuals were identified, 374 of which were observed on more than one occasion. The cumulative number of identified whales has increased since 1989. Recapture rate was low and varied among different years. A total of 33 whales was observed using the Abrolhos Bank for longer than 10 yr, up to a maximum of 16 yr. Our data suggest that different whales show distinct movement rates. Some whales used a large extent of the Abrolhos Bank region. Opportunistic photo-identification data (on the scale of the Brazilian coast from 4° to 23°S) revealed important information about stock identity. The longest distance between within-season resightings was over 600 km, while one whale was observed in two locations separated by more than 1,400 km in different years. Long-range movements within and between seasons support the single stock hypothesis for humpback whales wintering off the Brazilian coast.  相似文献

Data from the North Pacific sperm whale (Physeter catodon Linnaeus, 1758) fishery were examined for a possible density dependent change in growth during 40 yr harvesting after World War II. Early in this period males from the eastern stock were 16.8 m or less in length. By the early 1970s the largest males in the catch exceeded 16.8 m in length and reached 18.9 m in the late 1970s. The proportion of males measuring over 16.8 m, among sexually mature males (≥14.0 m), increased from 0 to >20% during the 1970s. Increases in the maximum size of males were possibly preceded by a change in the frequency distribution of body lengths in the middle 1960s when only 10% of the postwar catch had been taken. Testis weights suggested an increase in body length at sexual maturity. Two of the three putative North Pacific stocks showed similar growth changes. Adult males taken in the Bering Sea did not show such changes during the exploitation which ended in 1972 because of overfishing. Females showed no detectable change in body size. It is concluded that: (1) density dependent effects on male growth are greater before sexual maturity than after it, (2) males may show density dependent changes even at a population level above 90% of the carrying capacity, (3) polygynous males acquire more mates and realize higher reproductive success because of increased body size, and (4) females appear to maximize production by maturing earlier and shortening calving intervals in response to density change.  相似文献

Bowhead whales occur in the Arctic year‐round. Their movements are largely correlated with seasonal expansions and reductions of sea ice, but a few recent extralimital sightings have occurred in the eastern and western North Atlantic and one was also documented in the western North Pacific over 50 years ago. Here we present details of a juvenile bowhead whale that was photographed and filmed from above and below the water while it was skim‐feeding in Caamaño Sound, BC, Canada on May 31, 2016. This sighting occurred over 2000 km southeast from the nearest known range for this species in the Bering Sea at a time that most bowhead whales in that region would have been migrating northeast. This sighting represents the first and only documentation of a bowhead whale in the eastern North Pacific to date.  相似文献

Fidelity of individual animals to breeding sites is a primary determinant of population structure. The degree and scale of philopatry in a population reflect the fitness effects of social facilitation, ecological adaptation and optimal inbreeding. Patterns of breeding-site movement and fidelity are functions of social structure and are frequently sex biased. We report on a female humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) first identified by natural markings off Brazil that subsequently was photographed off Madagascar. The minimum travel distance between these locations is greater than 9800 km, approximately 4000 km longer than any previously reported movement between breeding grounds, more than twice the species' typical seasonal migratory distance and the longest documented movement by a mammal. It is unexpected to find this exceptional long-distance movement between breeding groups by a female, as models of philopatry suggest that male mammals move more frequently or over longer distances in search of mating opportunities. While such movement may be advantageous, especially in changeable or unpredictable circumstances, it is not possible to unambiguously ascribe causality to this rare observation. This finding illustrates the behavioural flexibility in movement patterns that may be demonstrated within a typically philopatric species.  相似文献
