Explaining the coexistence and distribution of species in time and space remains a fundamental challenge. While species coexistence depends on both local and regional mechanisms, it is sometimes unclear which role each mechanism takes in a given ecosystem. Consequently, it is very hard to predict the response of the ecosystem to environmental changes. Here, we develop a model to study spatial patterns of coexistence, focusing on predator–prey and host–parasite populations. We show, both theoretically and empirically, that these systems may exhibit both local and regional patterns and mechanisms of coexistence. Changes in environmental parameters, such as spatial connectivity, may lead to a transition from regional to local coexistence or it may lead directly to extinction, depending on demographic parameters. This demonstrates the importance of simultaneously analysing interacting mechanisms that act at different spatial scales to understand the response of ecosystems to environmental changes.  相似文献

DNA metabarcoding is a powerful new tool allowing characterization of species assemblages using high‐throughput amplicon sequencing. The utility of DNA metabarcoding for quantifying relative species abundances is currently limited by both biological and technical biases which influence sequence read counts. We tested the idea of sequencing 50/50 mixtures of target species and a control species in order to generate relative correction factors (RCFs) that account for multiple sources of bias and are applicable to field studies. RCFs will be most effective if they are not affected by input mass ratio or co‐occurring species. In a model experiment involving three target fish species and a fixed control, we found RCFs did vary with input ratio but in a consistent fashion, and that 50/50 RCFs applied to DNA sequence counts from various mixtures of the target species still greatly improved relative abundance estimates (e.g. average per species error of 19 ± 8% for uncorrected vs. 3 ± 1% for corrected estimates). To demonstrate the use of correction factors in a field setting, we calculated 50/50 RCFs for 18 harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) prey species (RCFs ranging from 0.68 to 3.68). Applying these corrections to field‐collected seal scats affected species percentages from individual samples (Δ 6.7 ± 6.6%) more than population‐level species estimates (Δ 1.7 ± 1.2%). Our results indicate that the 50/50 RCF approach is an effective tool for evaluating and correcting biases in DNA metabarcoding studies. The decision to apply correction factors will be influenced by the feasibility of creating tissue mixtures for the target species, and the level of accuracy needed to meet research objectives.  相似文献

The reaction distance of Gobiusculus flavescens to mobile and immobile copepod prey of different transparency was studied in water conditions with different turbidity levels or spectral composition. Both prey contrast (red or transparent Calanus spp.) and prey mobility caused reaction distance of G. flavescens to increase. The effect of prey mobility or prey transparency on reaction distance was independent of turbidity level. Longest reaction distances were measured for mobile and red prey at intermediate turbidity levels (10–20 JTU). Contrast threshold decreased with increasing turbidity. Although contrast of red and transparent copepod prey increased with increasing wavelength, longest reaction distances were observed at shorter wavelengths (blue–green). Lowest contrast threshold was found at shorter wavelengths. Visual pigments of G. flavescens are adapted to its natural environment. Both turbidity and spectral composition influenced G. flavescens contrast threshold.  相似文献

Viperid snakes strike, envenomate, and release mammalian preyto prevent being harmed by the prey; snakes must then trackprey in the process of strike-induced chemosensory searching.Because rattlesnakes prefer to track and consume envenomatedprey, it would seem that the scent of envenomated tissue iskey to the tracking process. After striking rodents, rattlesnakesalso retain a specific chemical search image of prey items.I examined this behavioral pattern in copperheads (Agkistrodoncontortrix) from three US populations with documented dietarybiases toward mammals (Kansas), lepidopteran larvae (Texas),and amphibians (Louisiana), respectively. Experiments were conductedto assess whether copperheads form a specific search image ofnon-envenomated mouse, hornworm, and frog prey items. Additionalexperiments tested the relative importance of envenomated tissueto prey scent. Results indicate that copperheads do not forma specific search image of prey items. Preference for non-envenomatedprey items is in the order mouse > hornworm > frog forall three populations; therefore, the innate behavioral preferencefor types of prey does not match the dietary biases noted inthe literature. Envenomated mice and hornworms were preferredto all nonenvenomated prey items, but most trials involvingenvenomated frogs did not suggest envenomated prey preference.Overall, these results suggest that when the snakes search forprey, envenomated tissue stimuli are more important to snakesthan scents arising from the prey itself. Searching and consumptionbehaviors seem to be independent, suggesting that strike-inducedchemosensory searching and consumption are more complicatedbehavioral processes than previously recognized.  相似文献

When offered a mixed diet of different zooplanktonic items covering a body size range of 75–2200 μm, (a) rohu, Labeo rohita and (b) singhi, Heteropneustes fossilis larvae ingested progressively larger prey as they grew, due to age-related increase in gape. However, a nearly constant prey size/mouth size ratio was maintained for a period of 4wk after hatching. The dominance of rotifers in the diet during the first 2-wk was followed by cladocerans, particularly Moina macrocopa. Significant differences observed in the growth rates of the larvae reared on different diet regimes were related to ontogenetic changes in prey selection. An exclusive copepod diet throughout resulted in the lowest weight gain in the larvae of both species. However, copepods had no apparent adverse effects when present with the preferred rotifers and cladocerans. Although constituting a suboptimal prey size for the older larvae, rotifers alone, when present in sufficient densities, produced growth rates comparable to those obtained on a cladoceran diet. However, a mixed diet regime contributed to the maximum growth. The implications of these findings to rearing larvae of the economically important rohu and singhi are discussed.  相似文献

We isolated 10 polymorphic microsatellite markers for the silky short‐tailed bat, Carollia brevicauda, from genomic libraries enriched for (AAGG)n repetitive elements. The number of alleles ranged from six to 25 per locus with the observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.29 to 0.95. These markers will be useful for analysis of questions concerning population genetic structure and models of speciation. Results of cross‐species amplification in Carollia castanea and Carollia perspicillata are also reported.  相似文献

Predator prey models in which there is a delay in recruitment in both species and only adults interact are formulated and studied. Stability results show that the length of delays in recruitment in the prey are more critical than the length of recruitment delays in the predator. Thus the destabilizing effect of recruitment delays may be less important in higher trophic levels than some single species models indicate. Variance in the recruitment delay is shown to be an important stabilizing influence.  相似文献
