The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been used to calculate SARs and induced currents involving whole-body or partial-body exposures of models to spatially uniform or nonuniform (far-field or near-field), to sinusoidally varying EM fields, or to transient fields such as those associated with electromagnetic pulses. However, a weakness of the FDTD algorithm is that the dispersion of the tissue's dielectric properties is ignored and frequency-independent properties are assumed. Although this is permissible for continuous-wave or narrow-band irradiation, the results may be highly erroneous for short pulses, in which ultra-wide bandwidths are involved. In some recent publications, procedures are described for one- and two-dimensional problems for media in which the complex permittivity epsilon * (omega) may be described by a single-order Debye relaxation equation or a modified version thereof. These procedures based on a convolution integral describing D(t) in terms of E(t) cannot be extended to human tissues for which multiterm Debye relaxation equations must generally be used. We describe here a new differential-equation approach that can be used for general dispersive media. We illustrate the use of this approach by one- and three-dimensional examples of media for which epsilon * (omega) is given by a multiterm Debye equation, and for an approximate two-thirds muscle-equivalent model of the human body. Based on a single run involving a Gaussian pulse, the frequency-dependent FDTD [(FD)2TD] method allows calculations of SARs and induced currents at various frequencies by taking the Fourier components of the induced E fields. Bacterial functional amyloids contribute to biofilm development by bacteria and provide protection from the immune system and prevent antibiotic treatment. Strategies to target amyloid formation and interrupt biofilm formation have attracted recent interest due to their antimicrobial potential. Functional amyloid in Pseudomonas (Fap) includes FapC as the major component of the fibril while FapB is a minor component suggested to function as a nucleator of FapC. The system also includes the small periplasmic protein FapA, which has been shown to regulate fibril composition and morphology. The interplay between these three components is central in Fap fibril biogenesis. Here we present a comprehensive biophysical and spectroscopy analysis of FapA, FapB and FapC and provide insight into their molecular interactions. We show that all three proteins are primarily disordered with some regions with structural propensities for α-helix and β-sheet. FapA inhibits FapC fibrillation by targeting the nucleation step, whereas for FapB the elongation step is modulated. Furthermore, FapA alters the morphology of FapC (more than FapB) fibrils. Complex formation is observed between FapA and FapC, but not between FapA and FapB, and likely involves the N-terminus of FapA. We conclude that FapA is an intrinsically disordered chaperone for FapC that guards against fibrillation within the periplasm. This new understanding of a natural protective mechanism of Pseudomonas against amyloid formations can serve as inspiration for strategies blocking biofilm formation in infections. 相似文献

A new method, involving only gentle procedures, is described for the isolation of bovine β-casein. The optical rotatory dispersion (o.r.d.) and circular dichroism (c.d.) of the A1 variant, so isolated, are determined in the temperature range 2–60°C, at pH 6.9 (25°C) and . Conformational analyses are made of the o.r.d. and c.d. results using the reference c.d. spectra of Brahms and Brahms, the Kronig—Kramers transform, and also of the c.d. results by the method of Provencher and Glöckner. The conformations obtained are compared with those predicted for the amino acid sequence by the methods of Chou and Fasman and of Lim. It is concluded that β-casein contains α-helical structure and β-sheet at 2°C. A structural interpretation is proposed for the effect of increase of temperature on the o.r.d. and c.d., involving an increase in the proportion of β-sheet at the expense of aperiodic structure. 相似文献

Relaxation of tensions of the surface of Xenopus laevisembryos at the late blastula stage leads to deep and diverse developmental defects and increased variability in mutual position and volume ratios of the axial rudiments. Here, we demonstrate that the development of such embryos was markedly normalized if the relaxed tensions were restored in one of two ways: (1) isotropic stretching of the blastocoel roof induced by the incubation of relaxed embryos in a hypotonic medium or (2) anisotropic stretching of embryos on two needles. In the latter case, we succeeded in restoring the morphological axis not only after longitudinal stretching but also after transverse stretching, and the new axis had signs of anteroposterior polarity. - Nearly 90% of the world's large herbivore diversity occurs in Africa, yet there is a striking dearth of information on the movement ecology of these organisms compared to herbivores living in higher latitude ecosystems.
- The environmental context for movements of large herbivores in African savanna ecosystems has several distinguishing features. African large herbivores move in landscapes with high spatiotemporal variability, low predictability, seasonal restrictions in surface water as well as food resources, and exposure to a diverse assemblage of competitors, predators, and pathogens. These features influence mobility, diel activity routines, home-range fidelity, and exposure to predation.
- We review the knowledge that has been gained about the movements of African herbivores from Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry and identify important gaps in knowledge that exist. Topics addressed include seasonal movement patterns, daily activity schedules, space utilisation, water dependency, responses to risks of predation, pathogen transmission, social affiliations, and local population density determination.
- While the growing number of GPS telemetry studies has addressed a wide range of topics in Africa, they remain fragmentary in terms of places and species represented. Most research has been focussed on three species, and practices for data sharing and analysis should be improved. African landscapes are changing perhaps faster than any other region on Earth, with rapidly expanding human populations, massive infrastructure development projects, and changes in climatic regimes. There is a crucial need to establish relationships between herbivore movements and their changing environments, especially in Africa where most of the world's large herbivore diversity resides.

High similarity between bacterioneuston and airborne bacterial community compositions in a high mountain lake area 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The bacterioneuston (bacteria inhabiting the air–water interface) is poorly characterized and possibly forms a unique community in the aquatic environment. In high mountain lakes, the surface film is subjected to extreme conditions of life, suggesting the development of a specific and adapted bacterioneuston community. We have studied the surface film of a remote high mountain lake in the Pyrenees by cloning the PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene and comparing with bacteria present in underlying waters (UW), and airborne bacteria from the dust deposited on the top of the snow pack. We did not detect unusual taxa in the neuston but rather very common and widespread bacterial groups. Betaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria accounted for >75% of the community composition. Other minor groups were Gammaproteobacteria (between 8% and 12%), Alphaproteobacteria (between 1% and 5%), and Firmicutes (1%). However, we observed segregated populations in neuston and UW for the different clades within each of the main phylogenetic groups. The soil bacterium Acinetobacter sp. was only detected in the snow–dust sample. Overall, higher similarities were found between bacterioneuston and airborne bacteria than between the former and bacterioplankton. The surface film in high mountain lakes appears as a direct interceptor of airborne bacteria useful for monitoring long-range bacterial dispersion. 相似文献

Starting from N paired differences of a continuous variable, BENNETT 's (1962) bivariate sign test is identified as a test against so called homeopoetic treatment effects (or location shifts in one or both variables X and Y). As a complement, a new sign test is identified to be sensitive to so called heteropoetic treatment effects (shifts in dispersion).
