Summary The -crystallin proteins consist of two topologically equivalent domains, each built up out of two similar motifs. They are encoded by a gene family, which already contained five members before the divergence of rodents and primates. A further gene duplication took place in each lineage. To analyze the pattern of evolution within this gene family, the coding sequences of six human genes, six rat genes, and four mouse genes were compared. Between species, a uniform rate of evolution of all regions of the protein is seen. The ratio of synonymous to nonsynonymous substitution in the human/rat or human/mouse comparison is much lower than the ratio when rat and mouse are compared indicating that the -crystallin proteins are better conserved in the rodent lineage. Within species, the regions encoding the two external motifs I and III of the protein show a greater extent of nonsynonymous substitution than the regions encoding the two internal protein motifs II and IV. The low extent of synonymous substitution between the second exons (encoding motifs I and II) of the rat -crystallin genes suggests the frequent occurrence of gene conversion. In contrast, a high extent of synonymous substitution is found in exon 3 (encoding motifs III and IV) of the rat genes. The same phenomenon is seen within the human gene family. The frequencies of occurrence of the various dinucleotides deviate less from those predicted from the frequencies of occurrence of each individual nucleotide in the second exons than in the third exons. The sequences of the third exons are significantly depleted in CpG, ApA, and GpT and enriched in CpT and GpA.  相似文献

Summary Of the 20 protein amino acids, 16 have a methylene group at the position, and a further three bear a methine group. No aromatic, carboxamido, carboxylic carbon, or hetero atoms are attached directly to the carbon, but they are separated by this methylene or occasionally by a longern-alkylene spacer group. Therefore, the structure of the protein amino acids should rather be formulated as H2N–CH((CH2)n–R)–COOH instead of the generally accepted H2N–CH(R)–COOH. The appearance of and the role played by the spacer group are discussed in an evolutionary context. It is suggested that the spacer group appeared as a result of prebiotic selection, based on the relative abundance, racemization rate, and suitability for thermal polymerization of the protein amino acids and their homologs with various spacer group lengths. At the biotic level of evolution the requirements for ribosomal polymerization, as well as the abilities of polypeptides to maintain a stable and flexible threedimensional structure and to bind ligands are considered and are proposed to have been responsible for the possible exclusion of longer spacer groups. It is concluded that the general role of the spacer group is to ensure the uniformity of the constant regions H2N–CH(-)–COOH and the individuality of the R contact groups by spatially separating them.  相似文献

Summary We report a preliminary analysis of structural and regulatory evolution of the A and B chorion gene families in two wild silkmoths,Antheraea pernyi andAntheraea polyphemus. Homospecific and heterospecific dot hybridizations were performed between previously characterizedA. polyphemus complementary DNA clones and total or stage-specific follicular mRNAs from the two species. The hybridization patterns indicated substantial interspecies changes in the abundance of corresponding mRNA sequences (heteroposic evolution) without substantial changes in their developmental specificities (heterochronic evolution). In addition, the proteins encoded in the two species by corresponding mRNAs were determined by hybrid-selected translation followed by electrophoretic analysis. The results suggested that the proteins evolve in size, presumably through internal deletions and duplications.  相似文献

Summary The evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships of sevenDrosophila species groups (represented byD. melanogaster, D. mulleri, D. mercatorum, D. robusta, D. virilis, D. immigrans, D. funebris, andD. melanica) were investigated by the use of two-dimensional electrophoresis. The resulting phylogeny is congruent with the current views of evolution among these groups based on morphological characters and immunological distances. Previous studies indicated that the ability of one-dimensional electrophoresis to resolve relationships between distantly related taxa extended to about the Miocene [25 million years (Myr) ago], but the present study demonstrates that two-dimensional electrophoresis is a useful indicator of phylogeny even back to the Paleocene (65 Myr ago). In addition, two-dimensional electrophoresis is shown to be a useful technique for detecting slowly evolving structural proteins such as actins and tropomyosins.  相似文献

Ocular structures have recently been discovered on the cephalon of an Ordovician agnostid trilobite, Oculagnostus frici (Holub, 1908). They are represented mainly by obvious palpebral lobes situated at the postero-lateral part of the genae. In addition, in one specimen there is a dome-shaped structure below the palpebral lobe. This may well be the remains of an eye, but details of its structure are indeterminate. In the other two cephala to hand there is a notch or cavity beneath the palpebral lobe, indicating that the visual surface may have been encompassed by a circum-ocular suture such that the lentiferous region normally dropped out during ecdysis. The origin of the ocular structures in Oculagnostus frici is briefly discussed. Oculagnostus n. gen. is described.  相似文献

A survey of 35 species indicates that monitor lizards (Varanus) typically hunt over large areas, search in particular microhabitats, and feed frequently on a wide variety of prey, many of which are relatively small. There is ontogenetic, seasonal, and geographic variation in diet. With some exceptions, invertebrates are the predominant prey, but rare predation on vertebrates is often energetically significant. A few monitors specialize on prey types that occur as occasional items in the diet of species with more generalized diets; these include crabs, snails, orthopterans, lizards, and large mammals. For most species, prey specialization occurs via habitat selection and a variety of prey types and sizes are eaten, as expected for widely searching predators. Comparisons with other anguimorphans suggest that derived features of Varanus are associated with high body temperature and activity levels; specialized chemoreception; and rapid, skillful capture of hidden and/or potentially hard to catch prey. Occasional ingestion of moderately large prey is primitive for Varanoidca (Helodermatidae +Varanidae), accentuating a trend that is perhaps primitive for anguimorphan lizards. Reduction of very large prey prior to ingestion is a derived attribute within Varanus , seen infrequently in several larger species and commonly in V. komodoensis. This study illustrates the synthesis of comparative natural history in a phylogenetic context, a method that addresses the history of organismal change.  相似文献

Ultrastructure, biochemistry and 5S rRNA sequences link tracheophytes, bryophytes and charalean green algae, but the precise interrelationships between these groups remain unclear. Further major clarification now awaits primary sequence data. These are also needed to determine directionality in possible evolutionary trends within the bryophytes, but are unlikely to overturn current schemes of classification or phylogeny. Comparative ultrastructural studies of spermatogenesis, sporogenesis, the cytoskeleton and plastids reinforce biochemical and morphogenetic evidence for the wide phyletic discontinuities between mosses, hepatics and hornworts, and also rule out direct lines of descent between them. Direct ancestral lineages from charalean algae to bryophytes and to tracheophytes are also unlikely. EM studies of gametophyte/sporophyte junctions, plus immunological investigations of bryophyte cytoskeletons, are likely to accentuate the differences between mosses, hepatirs and hornworts. Other priorities for systematics include elucidation of oil body ultrastructure, analysis of the changes in nuclear proteins during spermatogenesis and a detailed comparison of bryophyte and charalean plastids. The combined evidence from ultrastrueture, biochemistry, morphology and morphogenesis warrants general acceptance of the polyphyletic origin of the bryophytes. Ultrastructural attributes should be more widely used in bryophyte systematics.  相似文献

Summary The major families of repeated DNA sequences in the genome of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) were isolated from a sheared DNA library. One thousand clones, representing one million base pairs, or 0.15% of the genome, were surveyed for repeated DNA sequences by hybridization to total nuclear DNA. Four major repeat classes were identified and characterized with respect to copy number, chromosomal localization by in situ hybridization, and evolution in the family Solanaceae. The most highly repeated sequence, with approximately 77000 copies, consists of a 162 bp tandemly repeated satellite DNA. This repeat is clustered at or near the telomeres of most chromosomes and also at the centromeres and interstitial sites of a few chromosomes. Another family of tandemly repeated sequences consists of the genes coding for the 45 S ribosomal RNA. The 9.1 kb repeating unit in L. esculentum was estimated to be present in approximately 2300 copies. The single locus, previously mapped using restriction fragment length polymorphisms, was shown by in situ hybridization as a very intense signal at the end of chromosome 2. The third family of repeated sequences was interspersed throughout nearly all chromosomes with an average of 133 kb between elements. The total copy number in the genome is approximately 4200. The fourth class consists of another interspersed repeat showing clustering at or near the centromeres in several chromosomes. This repeat had a copy number of approximately 2100. Sequences homologous to the 45 S ribosomal DNA showed cross-hybridization to DNA from all solanaceous species examined including potato, Datura, Petunia, tobacco and pepper. In contrast, with the exception of one class of interspersed repeats which is present in potato, all other repetitive sequences appear to be limited to the crossing-range of tomato. These results, along with those from a companion paper (Zamir and Tanksley 1988), indicate that tomato possesses few highly repetitive DNA sequences and those that do exist are evolving at a rate higher than most other genomic sequences.  相似文献

The hypothesis that dimorphically coloured, cryptic moths select appropriate rest sites by comparing their body scales to substrate reflectance was tested using typical and melanic morphs of the peppered moth, Biston betularia (L.). Experiments designed to block the individual's inspection of its inherited colour phenotype do not support Kettlewell's contrast/conflict (self-inspection) hypothesis. Instead, tracking of marked moths over successive days revealed individual differences in rest-site selection which were not related to treatments, experience (imprinting), nor closely to a moth's inherited colour pattern. Differences between family broods indicate that some genetic bias in background selection exists. The production of artificially selected lines with consistent but opposing preferences will allow us to investigate the co-evolution of pattern and behaviour.  相似文献
