This study investigates the effects of captivity and testosterone treatment on the volumes of brain regions involved in processing visual and spatial information in adult dark‐eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis). We treated captive and free‐living male juncos with either testosterone‐filled or empty implants. Captive juncos had a smaller hippocampal formation (HF) (both in absolute volume and relative to telencephalon) than free‐living birds, regardless of hormone treatment. Testosterone‐treated males (both captive and free‐living) had a smaller telencephalon and nucleus rotundus, but not a smaller HF or ectostriatum, than controls. We found that free‐living testosterone‐treated males had larger home ranges than free‐living controls in agreement with earlier experiments, but we found no corresponding difference in HF volume. We discuss the implications of the effect of captivity on HF volume for past and future laboratory experiments. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Neurobiol 43: 244–253, 2000  相似文献

In sexually dimorphic zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), only males learn to sing their father's song, whereas females learn to recognize the songs of their father or mate but cannot sing themselves. Memory of learned songs is behaviorally expressed in females by preferring familiar songs over unfamiliar ones. Auditory association regions such as the caudomedial mesopallium (CMM; or caudal mesopallium) have been shown to be key nodes in a network that supports preferences for learned songs in adult females. However, much less is known about how song preferences develop during the sensitive period of learning in juvenile female zebra finches. In this study, we used blood-oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to trace the development of a memory-based preference for the father's song in female zebra finches. Using BOLD fMRI, we found that only in adult female zebra finches with a preference for learned song over novel conspecific song, neural selectivity for the father's song was localized in the thalamus (dorsolateral nucleus of the medial thalamus; part of the anterior forebrain pathway, AFP) and in CMM. These brain regions also showed a selective response in juvenile female zebra finches, although activation was less prominent. These data reveal that neural responses in CMM, and perhaps also in the AFP, are shaped during development to support behavioral preferences for learned songs.  相似文献

The anterior forebrain (AF) pathway of songbirds has an essential but poorly understood function during song learning, a process requiring auditory experience. Consistent with a role in processing auditory information, two nuclei of the AF, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (lMAN) and Area X (X), contain some of the most complex auditory neurons known. In adult zebra finches, these neurons are strongly selective for both spectral and temporal properties of song: They respond more robustly to the bird's own song (BOS) than to songs of conspecific individuals, and they respond less well to BOS if it is played in reverse. lMAN and X neurons of young finches early in the process of song learning (30–45 days of age) are also song responsive, but lack the song and order selectivity present in adult birds. By an intermediate stage of learning (60 days), when birds have experience of both tutor song and their own developing (plastic) song, AF neurons have significant song and order selectivity for both tutor song and BOS (in this case, plastic song). The degree of BOS selectivity is still less than that found in adults, however. In addition, neurons at 60 days are heterogenous in their preference for BOS versus tutor song: Most prefer BOS, some prefer tutor song, and others respond equally to both songs. The selectivity of adult AF auditory neurons therefore arises rapidly during development from neurons that are initially unselective. These neurons are one of the clearest examples of experience-dependent acquisition of complex stimulus selectivity. Moreover, the neural selectivity for both BOS and tutor song at 60 days raises the possibility that experience of both songs during learning contributes to the properties of individual AF neurons. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Songbirds develop their songs by imitating songs of adults. For song learning to proceed normally, the bird's hearing must remain intact throughout the song development process. In many species, song learning takes place during one period early in life, and no more new song elements are learned thereafter. In these so-called close-ended learners, it has long been assumed that once song development is complete, audition is no longer necessary to maintain the motor patterns of full song. However, many of these close-ended learners maintain plasticity in overall song organization; the number and the sequence of song elements included in a song of an individual vary from one utterance to another, although no new song elements are added or lost in adulthood. It is conceivable that these species rely on continued auditory feedback to produce normal song syntax. The Bengalese finch is a close-ended learner that produces considerably variable songs as an adult. In the present study, we found that Bengalese finches require real-time auditory feedback for motor control even after song learning is complete; deafening adult finches resulted in development of abnormal song syntax in as little as 5 days. We also found that there was considerable individual variation in the degree of song deterioration after deafening. The neural mechanisms underlying adult song production in different species of songbirds may be more diverse than has been traditionally considered. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The goal of this study was to measure behavioral auditory thresholds in four Japanese macaques. Animals were trained using food as a reward in an operant reinforcement paradigm. Stimuli were 1-s sinusoids with 10-ms rise/fall times delivered through insert earphones (Etymotic ER-1) having expandable foam eartips. The animals generally produced threshold contours similar in shape to those reported for other macaques species, except that the low-frequency thresholds may have been slightly higher in the present studies. At middle and high frequencies, thresholds fell at the lower extreme of the range previously reported in other macaque species. The possible difference in low-frequency thresholds may have been a result of either transducer and calibration differences between studies or true species variations, or both. Though somewhat limited at high frequencies, the insert earphones used in these studies offer more reliable calibrations, less susceptibility to changes in positioning with movement of the animal, and greater interaural attenuation. It is generally thought that for species using vocal communication the spectral properties of the sender’s calls should match the frequency sensitivity of the receiver’s auditory system. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated both sender and receiver characteristics in anuran species. In the present study, auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in the serrate legged treefrog, Philautus odontotarsus, in order to determine if male call spectral structure and hearing sensitivity in males and females have co-evolved in this species. The results showed that the spectral structures of male vocalization match both male and female hearing sensitivity, even though the dominant frequencies of male calls (2.5 kHz) are mismatched with the regions of best frequency sensitivity (1.4 and 2.8 kHz). In addition, the results show that, in contrast with most previous ABR studies in non-human animals, but consistent with human studies, there are noticeable sex differences in peripheral auditory sensitivity in Philautus insofar as females exhibit lower auditory thresholds than males across the entire 1.8–18 kHz frequency range. The results also show that the dominant frequency of male calls is negatively correlated with body size, indicating that call characteristics reflect body size in this species which may be used by females during mate choice.  相似文献

We correlated available fate maps for the avian neural plate at stages HH4 and HH8 with the progress of local molecular specification, aiming to determine when the molecular specification maps of the primary longitudinal and transversal domains of the anterior forebrain agree with the fate mapped data. To this end, we examined selected gene expression patterns as they normally evolved in whole mounts and sections between HH4 and HH8 (or HH10/11 in some cases), performed novel fate-mapping experiments within the anterior forebrain at HH4 and examined the results at HH8, and correlated grafts with expression of selected gene markers. The data provided new details to the HH4 fate map, and disclosed some genes (e.g., Six3 and Ganf) whose expression domains initially are very extensive and subsequently retract rostralwards. Apart from anteroposterior dynamics, some genes soon became downregulated at the prospective forebrain floor plate, or allowed to identify an early roof plate domain (dorsoventral pattern). Peculiarities of the telencephalon (initial specification and differentiation of pallium versus subpallium) are contemplated. The basic anterior forebrain subdivisions seem to acquire correlated specification and fate mapping patterns around stage HH8.  相似文献

The ability to detect and discriminate attributes of sounds improves with practice. Determining how such auditory learning generalizes to stimuli and tasks that are not encountered during training can guide the development of training regimens used to improve hearing abilities in particular populations as well as provide insight into the neural mechanisms mediating auditory performance. Here we review the newly emerging literature on the generalization of auditory learning, focusing on behavioural investigations of generalization on basic auditory tasks in human listeners. The review reveals a variety of generalization patterns across different trained tasks that can not be summarized with a simple rule, and a diversity of views about the definition, evaluation and interpretation of generalization.  相似文献
