Abstract. A technique is described for the nondestructive measurement of water content variations in the stems of trees.
The density of intact tree stems in the forest was estimated using attenuation of gamma radiation. Water content was calculated after subsequent derivation of the volume fraction of solid matrix.
A radial sequence of such measurements was obtained by measuring a sequence of chords, and assuming homogeneity within concentric tori. Analysis of the source of errors showed that the system was a close approximation of an ideal, rigid-geometry, mono-energetic source/detector system, with basic precision dependent on the quantity of gamma radiation measured. Correlation coefficients between the gamma-attenuation technique and subsequent gravimetric estimates of water content for two field experiments reported here were 0.882 and 0.938.
The technique was shown to be capable of describing the radial and diurnal variation in water content at two heights in the stem of a 20-year-old tree of Pinus contorta .  相似文献

Hydrogen sulfide dissolved in water can be converted to elementary sulfur or sulfate by the photosynthetic bacterium Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum. Substrate inhibition occurred at sulfide concentrations above 5.7 mM. Light inhibition was found at average light intensities of 40,000 lux in a sulfide concentration of 5 mM, where no substrate inhibition occurred. Light intensity, the most important growth parameter, was attenuated through both scattering by sulfur particles and absorption by the cells. Average cell and sulfur particle sizes were 1.1 and 9.4 mum, respectively. Cells contributed 10 times as much to the turbidity as sulfur particles of the same weight concentration. The light attenuation factor was mathematically modeled, considering both the absorption and scattering effects based on the Beer-Lambert law and the Rayleigh theory, which were introduced to the cell growth model. Optimal operational conditions relating feed rate vs. light intensity were obtained to suppress the accumulation of sulfate and sulfide and save light energy for 2- and 4-L fed-batch reactors. Light intensity should be greater for the same performance (H(2)S removal rate/unit cell concentration) in larger reactors due to the scaleup effect on light transmission. Knowledge of appropriate growth kinetics in photosynthetic fed-batch reactors was essential to increase feed rate and light intensity and therefore cell growth. A mathematical model was developed that describes the cell growth by considering the light attenuation factor due to scattering and absorption and the crowding effect of the cells. This study examines the seasonal variation in the underwater spectral distribution of light in a mesotrophic (Lake Cromwell) and an oligo-mesotrophic (Lake Croche) temperate lake. Gilvin is primarily responsible for the strong selective attenuation of blue light in both lakes. As a result of differing gilvin concentrations light transmission maxima of downwelling and upwelling spectra are near 615 nm in Lake Cromwell and 599 nm in Lake Croche. With increases in depth both upwelling and downwelling radiance fluxes decrease, are shifted to longer wavelengths and become more monochromatic. The greatest penetration of light occurs in the summer and spring after which a gradual decrease occurs through fall to a minimum value in winter. Under the winter cover the P 50 of downwelling light shifts 10 to 20 nm towards shorter wavelengths. Seasonal changes in downwelling irradiance are related to solar altitude, concentration of suspended particles, phytoplankton populations, amount of gilvin, mixing and winter cover. The brownish colouration of these lakes is explained by reflectance of spectrally impure orangish-red light.  相似文献

In contaminated soils, efficiency of natural attenuation or engineered bioremediation largely depends on biodegradation capacities of the local microflorae. In the present study, the biodegradation capacities of various microflorae towards diesel oil were determined in laboratory conditions. Microflorae were collected from 9 contaminated and 10 uncontaminated soil samples and were compared to urban wastewater activated sludge. The recalcitrance of hydrocarbons in tests was characterised using both gas chromatography (GC) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC). The microflorae from contaminated soils were found to exhibit higher degradation capacities than those from uncontaminated soil and activated sludge. In cultures inoculated by contaminated-soil microflorae, 80% of diesel oil on an average was consumed over 4-week incubation compared to only 64% in uncontaminated soil and 60% in activated sludge cultures. As shown by GC, n-alkanes of diesel oil were totally utilised by each microflora but differentiated degradation extents were observed for cyclic and branched hydrocarbons. The enhanced degradation capacities of impacted-soil microflorae resulted probably from an adaptation to the hydrocarbon contaminants but a similar adaptation was noted in uncontaminated soils when conifer trees might have released natural hydrocarbons. GC×GC showed that a contaminated-soil microflora removed all aromatics and all branched alkanes containing less than C15. The most recalcitrant compounds were the branched and cyclic alkanes with 15–23 atoms of carbon.  相似文献

Life events related to the female hormonal cycle may trigger the onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or exacerbate symptoms in women already suffering from it. These observations suggest a possible role for ovarian hormones in the course of this disorder. Yet, the mechanisms that may subserve the modulatory effect of ovarian hormones are currently unknown. The aim of the present study was therefore to test the role of ovarian hormones in the signal attenuation rat model of OCD. Experiment 1 compared the behavior of pre-pubertal and adult male and female rats in the model, and found no age and sex differences in compulsive responding. Experiment 2 found that compulsive responding fluctuates along the estrous cycle, being highest during late diestrous and lowest during estrous. Acute administration of estradiol to pre-pubertal female rats was found to attenuate compulsive behavior (Experiment 3), and withdrawal from chronic administration of estradiol was shown to increase this behavior (Experiment 4). These findings extend the use of the signal attenuation model of OCD to female rats, and by demonstrating that the model is sensitive to the levels of ovarian hormones, provide the basis for using the model to study the role of ovarian hormones in OCD. In addition, the present findings support the hypothesis that the increased risk of onset and exacerbation of OCD in women post-partum may be a result of the decrease in the level of estradiol, which was elevated during pregnancy.  相似文献
