The acoustic adaptation hypothesis is based on the assumption that senders are directionally selected to maximize transmission and minimize degradation; however, the two aims are not necessarily convergent. In complex habitats, where more effects that might potentially cause attenuation and degradation co‐occur and longer transmission must incur a higher cost, signals should attenuate faster and have shorter transmission ranges. At the same time, such signals should be more resistant to degradation in order to preserve their communicatory function. Based on a sound transmission experiment, we tested the evidence for these predictions using territorial calls of three sympatric species of rails, inhabiting habitats with increasing complexity: Corncrake Crex crex, Spotted Crake Porzana porzana and Water Rail Rallus aquaticus. In the experiment, the calls were broadcasted with similar amplitudes through a heterogeneous habitat inhabited by all three species and rerecorded at different distances up to 320 m. Despite standardized amplitudes and habitats, calls of the species living in simpler habitats had longer transmission ranges but were more susceptible to degradation than calls of the species living in more complex habitats. Our results suggest that narrow frequency bandwidth is an adaptation of species inhabiting complex habitats that helps their calls to degrade less at the cost of stronger attenuation and shorter transmission range. By contrast, wide frequency bandwidth extends the range but increases degradation and thus it is used only by species inhabiting structurally simpler habitats. This study shows that, in more complex habitats, the clarity of the message is preserved at the cost of range.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in water clarity, as indicated by the attenuation coefficient for photosynthetically active radiation, K d (m-1), was determined by monthly measurements for a year in 9 North Island, New Zealand lakes. K d varied by a factor of 2 to 3 in 8 of the lakes, and a factor of 5 in one. The values of z c in these North Island lakes were generally greater than values calculated using previously published empirical relationships derived for northern hemisphere groups of lakes. The extent to which these relationships underestimated z c in the North Island lakes was broadly related to latitude. Estimated average irradiance at z c in each lake was similar to compensation point irradiances reported previously for freshwater macrophytes.  相似文献

Summary The expression of the chloramphenicol (Cm) —inducible Cm acetyltransferase gene (cat) of the staphylococcal plasmid pUB112 is regulated at the translational level. The leader mRNA preceding the cat coding sequence can form a stable hairpin structure, in which the cat Shine-Dalgarno sequence is masked. Previous work showed that translation of a short leader peptide terminating within the stem of the inhibitory secondary structure is required for basal Cm acetyltransferase (CAT) synthesis and its inducibility. In the present study we shortened this leader peptide by introducing ochre codons in its coding sequence and found that synthesis of the N-terminal part of the leader peptide, terminating directly 5 to the stem, is sufficient to mediate basal and inducible CAT synthesis. Amino acid substitution in this region of the leader peptide abolished inducibility. Increasing attention has been focused on the use of nanostructures as contrast enhancement agents in medical imaging, especially in computed tomography (CT). To date, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been demonstrated to have great potential as contrast agents for CT imaging. This study was designed to evaluate any effect on X-ray attenuation that might result from employing GNPs with a variety of shapes, sizes, surface chemistries, and concentrations. Gold nanorods (GNRs) and spherical GNPs were synthesized for this application. X-ray attenuation was quantified by Hounsfield unit (HU) in CT. Our findings indicated that smaller spherical GNPs (13 nm) had higher X-ray attenuation than larger ones (60 nm) and GNRs with larger aspect ratio exhibited great effect on X-ray attenuation. Moreover, poly ethylene glycol (PEG) coating on GNRs declined X-ray attenuation as a result of limiting the aggregation of GNRs. We observed X-ray attenuation increased when mass concentration of GNPs was elevated. Overall, smaller spherical GNPs can be suggested as a better alternative to Omnipaque, a good contrast agent for CT imaging. This data can be also considered for the application of gold nanostructures in radiation dose enhancement where nanoparticles with high X-ray attenuation are applied.  相似文献

The abundance and composition of autotrophic picoplankton (APP) were studied between February 2003 and March 2004 in Lake Balaton. Water samples were taken fortnightly in the eutrophic western basin and mesotrophic eastern basin. Our study, which took more than one year, revealed pronounced seasonal pattern of the picoplankton abundance and composition. According to our results there were three types of picoplankton in Lake Balaton: 1. Phycoerythrin‐rich coccoid cyanobacteria (PE), dominant summer picoplankters in the mesotrophic lake area; 2. Phycocyanin‐rich cyanobacteria (PC), the most abundant summer picoplankters in the eutrophic lake area; 3. Picoeukaryotes, dominant winter picoplankters in the whole lake. The observed abundance of picoeukaryotes (3 × 105 cells ml–1) was one of the highest ever found. Our study confirms that in Lake Balaton the colonial autotrophic picoplankton (colonial APP) become dominant in summer in the nutrient limited period. We have found strong negative relationship between the concentrations of available nitrogen forms (NH4–N, NO3–N, urea‐N) and the colonial APP abundance. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons is predictable and self-sustaining because bacteria able to use the contaminants as growth substrates are widely distributed. In contrast, bacteria able to grow at the expense of chlorinated aliphatic compounds are less common and the natural attenuation of such compounds is, therefore, less predictable. The purpose of this paper is to describe examples of other synthetic organic compounds that are known to be biodegradable and have the potential for natural attenuation in the field.  相似文献

Extensive trichloroethylene (TCE) groundwater contamination has resulted from discharges to a former seepage basin in the A/M Area at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site. The direction of groundwater flow has been determined and a seep line where the contaminated groundwater is estimated to emerge as surface water has been identified in a region of the Southern Sector of the A/M Area. This study was undertaken to estimate the potential of four rhizosphere soils along the seep line to naturally attenuate TCE. Microcosms were setup to evaluate both biotic and abiotic attenuation of TCE. Results demonstrated that sorption to soil was the dominant mechanism during the first week of incubation, with as much as 90% of the TCE removed from the aqueous phase. Linear partitioning coefficients (Kd) ranged from 0.83 to 7.4?mL/g, while organic carbon partition coefficients (Koc) ranged from 72 to 180?mL/gC. Diffu-sional losses from the microcosms appeared to be a dominant fate mechanism during the remainder of the experiment, as indicated by results from the water controls. A limited amount of TCE biodegradation was observed, and attempts to stimulate TCE biodegradation by either methanotrophic or methanogenic activity through amendments with methane, oxygen, and methanol were unsuccessful. The appearance of cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (c-DCE), and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (t-DCE) confirmed the potential for anaerobic reductive dechlorination. However, these daughter products represented less than 5% of the initial TCE added. The sorption results indicate that natural attenuation may represent a viable remediation option for the TCE plume as it passes through the rhizosphere.  相似文献

IN this study the biodegradation and leaching of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) during the natural attenuation (NA) processes of the oily sludge used for the maintenance of unpaved roads were evaluated. The study was conducted on a road located in Arauca (Colombia) and simultaneously in a laboratory setting where rain conditions were simulated by using columns. In the in situ study, three depths (5, 50, and 80 cm) were assessed. The degradation of TPH was evaluated by monitoring physicochemical and microbiological conditions in situ and in the columns during 538 and 119 days, respectively. The pH levels observed during the study were relatively constant and ranged between the optimum values for biodegradation (6.2 ± 0.9). Water content in situ was low (< 14%) and observed concentrations of nitrogen (as ammonia and nitrate) were < 30 and < 10 mg/kgdw, respectively, indicating that no mass balance was maintained, both possible factors limiting intrinsic biodegradation. During the in situ study a 95% TPH degradation was observed at 5 cm depth, whereas no degradation was evident at 50 and 80 cm. In the column experiments, TPH concentration in the leachate was < 1 mg/L, indicating that the leaching process did not play a key role in this study.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether modifying an existing, highly biofidelic full body finite element model [total human model for safety (THUMS)] would produce valid amplitude and temporal shock wave characteristics as it travels proximally through the lower extremity. Modifying an existing model may be more feasible than developing a new model, in terms of cost, labour and expertise. The THUMS shoe was modified to more closely simulate the material properties of a heel pad. Relative errors in force and acceleration data from experimental human pendulum impacts and simulated THUMS impacts were 22% and 54%, respectively, across the time history studied. The THUMS peak acceleration was attenuated by 57.5% and took 19.7 ms to travel proximally along the lower extremity. Although refinements may be necessary to improve force and acceleration timing, the modified THUMS represented, to a certain extent, shock wave propagation and attenuation demonstrated by living humans under controlled impact conditions.  相似文献
