The “good genes” explanation of attractiveness posits that mate preferences favour healthy individuals due to direct and indirect benefits associated with the selection of a healthy mate. Consequently, attractiveness judgements are likely to reflect judgements of apparent health. One physical characteristic that may inform health judgements is fluctuating asymmetry as it may act as a visual marker for genetic quality and developmental stability. Consistent with these suggestions, a number of studies have found relationships between facial symmetry and facial attractiveness. In Study 1, the interplay between facial symmetry, attractiveness, and judgements of apparent health was explored within a partial correlation design. Findings suggest that the attractiveness–symmetry relationship is mediated by a link between judgements of apparent health and facial symmetry. In Study 2, an opposite-sex bias in sensitivity to facial symmetry was observed when judging health. Thus, perceptual analysis of symmetry may be an adaptation facilitating discrimination between potential mates on the basis of apparent health. The findings of both studies are consistent with a “good genes” explanation of the attractiveness–symmetry relationship and problematic for the claim that symmetry is attractive as a by-product of the ease with which the visual recognition system processes symmetric stimuli. 相似文献

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) affects over 320 million people worldwide. Healthy lifestyles, improved drugs and effective nutraceuticals are different components of a response against the growing T2D epidemic. The specialized metabolite montbretin A (MbA) is being developed for treatment of T2D and obesity due to its unique pharmacological activity as a highly effective and selective inhibitor of the human pancreatic α‐amylase. MbA is an acylated flavonol glycoside found in small amounts in montbretia (Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora) corms. MbA cannot be obtained in sufficient quantities for drug development from its natural source or by chemical synthesis. To overcome these limitations through metabolic engineering, we are investigating the genes and enzymes of MbA biosynthesis. We previously reported the first three steps of MbA biosynthesis from myricetin to myricetin 3‐O‐(6′‐O‐caffeoyl)‐glucosyl rhamnoside (mini‐MbA). Here, we describe the sequence of reactions from mini‐MbA to MbA, and the discovery and characterization of the gene and enzyme responsible for the glucosylation of mini‐MbA. The UDP‐dependent glucosyltransferase CcUGT3 (UGT703E1) catalyzes the 1,2‐glucosylation of mini‐MbA to produce myricetin 3‐O‐(glucosyl‐6′‐O‐caffeoyl)‐glucosyl rhamnoside. Co‐expression of CcUGT3 with genes for myricetin and mini‐MbA biosynthesis in Nicotiana benthamiana validated its biological function and expanded the set of genes available for metabolic engineering of MbA. 相似文献

Biological invasions are a major driver of global change, for which models can attribute causes, assess impacts and guide management. However, invasion models typically focus on spread from known introduction points or non‐native distributions and ignore the transport processes by which species arrive. Here, we developed a simulation model to understand and describe plant invasion at a continental scale, integrating repeated transport through trade pathways, unintentional release events and the population dynamics and local anthropogenic dispersal that drive subsequent spread. We used the model to simulate the invasion of Europe by common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), a globally invasive plant that causes serious harm as an aeroallergen and crop weed. Simulations starting in 1950 accurately reproduced ragweed's current distribution, including the presence of records in climatically unsuitable areas as a result of repeated introduction. Furthermore, the model outputs were strongly correlated with spatial and temporal patterns of ragweed pollen concentrations, which are fully independent of the calibration data. The model suggests that recent trends for warmer summers and increased volumes of international trade have accelerated the ragweed invasion. For the latter, long distance dispersal because of trade within the invaded continent is highlighted as a key invasion process, in addition to import from the native range. Biosecurity simulations, whereby transport through trade pathways is halted, showed that effective control is only achieved by early action targeting all relevant pathways. We conclude that invasion models would benefit from integrating introduction processes (transport and release) with spread dynamics, to better represent propagule pressure from native sources as well as mechanisms for long‐distance dispersal within invaded continents. Ultimately, such integration may facilitate better prediction of spatial and temporal variation in invasion risk and provide useful guidance for management strategies to reduce the impacts of invasion. 相似文献

目的 分析高血压患者在农村医疗服务网络接受协调性和连续性服务的提供状况,为改进患者的整合服务利用提供决策参考。方法 根据国内外文献,以自行编制服务协调性和连续性提供的问卷为工具,调查数据采用描述性统计分析。结果 49.6%的患者伴有1种及以上疾病,约73.0%在乡镇卫生院有就医经历,到过2家及以上机构就医的占51.3%;在乡村两级治疗效果不佳的患者,能够获取村医和乡镇医生推荐转诊机构的比重最大,分别为28.4%和68.7%;上级医生能够根据下级机构相关诊疗信息连续诊疗的不到43.0%,下级医生能够根据前期诊疗信息继续诊疗的比例刚超4成;“上转容易、下转难”现象同样存在。 结论 农村慢性病患者的患病特点增加了在农村纵向医疗机构就诊的几率,但该网络提供连续性和协调性服务的程度却不高,应加强农村三级医疗机构间的全面整合。 相似文献

Airborne particles and ammonia were monitored in horse stalls managed under four conditions. Two ventilation rates, high (27 air changes per h) and low (5 air changes per h) and two bedding types, paper and straw, were employed. At both ventilation rates, the number of airborne particles generated while the stalls were mucked out was higher with straw than with paper. Particles were more efficiently cleared at the higher ventilation rate in both the straw and paper stalls. Ammonia measurements reflected an accumulation over time. In the stalls with low ventilation, ammonia levels were significantly higher than in those stalls with high ventilation regardless of bedding type. Management decisions and their relationships to respiratory disorders are discussed. 相似文献

In a recent issue of Bioethics, I argued that compulsory moral bioenhancement should be administered covertly. Alexander Zambrano has criticized this argument on two fronts. First, contrary to my claim, Zambrano claims that the prevention of ultimate harm by covert moral bioenhancement fails to meet conditions for permissible liberty-restricting public health interventions. Second, contrary to my claim, Zambrano claims that covert moral bioenhancement undermines autonomy to a greater degree than does overt moral bioenhancement. The socioeconomic and ethnic characteristics of parents are some of the most important correlates of adverse health outcomes
in childhood. However, the relationships between ethnic, economic, and behavioral factors and the health outcomes responsible
for this pervasive finding have not been specified in child health epidemiology. The general objective of this paper is to
propose a theoretical approach to the study of maternal behaviors and child health in diverse ethnic and socioeconomic environments.
The specific aims are: (a) to describe a causal pathway between the utility that women obtain through work outside the home and through child care
and disease hazard rates in childhood using an optimization model; (b) to specify the influence of ethnic and socioeconomic factors on model constraints; (c) to use the model as a tool to learn about how different combinations of maternal wage labor and child care time might influence
child health outcomes in diverse social contexts; (d) to identify parameters that will require measurement in future research; (e) to discuss research strategies that will enable us to obtain these measurements; and (f) to discuss the implications of the model for biostatistical modeling and public health intervention. Optimization models
are powerful heuristic tools for understanding how ethnic, environmental, family, and personal characteristics can place important
constraints on both the quality and quantity of care that women can provide to their children. They provide a quantitative
appreciation for the difficult trade-offs that most women face between working in order to purchase basic goods that children
cannot do without (e.g., food, clothing, shelter, health insurance), and increasing offspring well-being through child care
(e.g., training in social skills, affection, protection from environmental hazards, help with homework).

A. Magdalena Hurtado, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, University of New Mexico. Her research
interests include the origins of the sexual division of labor, epidemiology of indigenous peoples, disease susceptibility,
the development and intergenerational transmission of antigens and immune defense, immune function and allergic sensitization,
and trauma. She also works on public health interventions, biological capital and poverty, and land tenure and human rights
in native communities of South America.
Carol Lambourne, M.Sc., is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology, University of New Mexico. Her research
interests are evolutionary models of child and adolescent development, life history theory, family composition and investment
patterns, pubertal timing and psychosexual maturation, juvenile stress, and infanticide.
Kim Hill, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Anthropology, University of New Mexico. His research interests are modern
hunter-gatherers, including extensive fieldwork in lowland South America. Current topics of interest include human evolution,
economic strategies, life history theory, the evolution of cooperation, and the emergence of social norms enforced by punishment.
He is also involved in economic development, health and education projects with lowland South American native populations.
Karen Kessler received her M.S. in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico in 1996. Her research interests are the
application of mathematical modeling to the prevention of diabetes and other causes of morbidity and mortality in historical

土地利用空间格局是影响区域生态系统健康状态的重要因素。构建适用于舟山岛生态系统健康诊断的"活力-组织结构-恢复力-生态系统服务功能"评价指标体系,其活力以植被相对密度指数表征、组织结构以蔓延度等4个景观格局指数表征。选择镇、乡或街道等行政区作为评价单元,以遥感数据和土地利用调查数据为基础,采用G IS和RS技术,提取舟山岛17个乡镇1970-2005年间5个时期的土地利用空间格局和指标信息,采用综合参数评价模型对研究区生态系统健康进行时空动态评价。研究结果表明:(1)35 a来舟山岛生态系统健康整体状况呈下降趋势,相对较好的区域面积下降了18%,相对一般的下降了8%,而相对较差的上升了26%;(2)城市化、滩涂围垦与沿海工业的发展是舟山岛生态系统健康状态下降的主要原因。 相似文献

鉴于农业生态系统健康与人类、社会、经济、环境等具有密切的关系 ,从区域尺度出发 ,提出区域农业生态系统健康的概念、评价指标体系及其相应度量方法 ,并采用专家评判标准赋值法对各指标进行了标准量化。认为农业生态系统存在不健康、亚健康和健康 3种状态 ,在这 3种状态下各指标的属性判断值分别是 1、5和 10 ,并以山东省禹城市为例进行了实证分析应用。结果表明 :从 1980年到 2 0 0 0年 ,禹城市农业生态系统总体上表现为由不健康状态经过亚健康状态 ,目前处在向健康状态的过渡阶段 ,综合健康指数由 4上升为 6。其中 ,结构特征在由亚健康状态向健康状态过渡中又转变为亚健康状态 ,是因为资源可供性和结构多样性向不健康状态转变所致 ;生产功能特征表现为由不健康过渡为亚健康进一步向健康状态过渡 ,其中生态效率有向不健康转变的趋势 ;抗逆特征表现为由亚健康向健康过渡的趋势 ,而其中自生产力已表现为不健康状态。评价结果与实际情况基本相符 相似文献
