Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida responded similarly to hatch stimulation by potato root leachate, but proportionally more second-stage juveniles (J2s) of G. rostochiensis hatched than of G. pallida in response to picrolonic acid, sodium thiocyanate, alpha-solanine, and alpha-chaconine. Fractionation of the potato root leachate identified hatching factors with species-selective (active toward both species but stimulating greater hatch of one species than the other), -specific (active toward only one species), and -neutral (equally active toward both species) activities. In a comparison of two populations of each of the two potato cyst nematode (PCN) species, however, greater similarity in response to the individual hatching factors was observed among populations of different species produced under the same conditions than among different populations of the same PCN species. Smaller numbers of species-specific and species-selective hatching factor stimulants and hatching inhibitors than of hatching factors were resolved. In a study to determine whether the different hatching responses of the two species to the same root leachate were associated with different ratios of species-selective and species-specific hatching factors, G. rostochiensis pathotype Ro1 exhibited greater hatch than did G. pallida pathotype Pa2/3 in response to leachate from older plants (more than 38 days old), while G. pallida exhibited greater hatch in response to leachate from younger plants (less than 38 days old); the response of G. pallida pathotype Pal with respect to plant age was intermediate between the other two populations. Combined molecular exclusion-ion exchange chromatography of the root leachates from plants of different ages revealed an increase in the proportion of G. rostochiensis-specific and -selective hatching factors as the plants aged.  相似文献

Marine turtle reproductive success is correlated with the stability and quality of the nesting environment. Female marine turtles show fidelity to nesting beaches, making artificial beach nourishment practices directly relevant to their recovery. We evaluated the impacts of artificial beach nourishment on Loggerhead ( Caretta caretta ) and Green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ) between artificially nourished and nonnourished beaches. We observed reduced nesting success (ratio of nesting emergences to emergences not resulting in nest deposition) for both species. This negative effect lasted for one season in Loggerheads and for at least one season in Green turtles. Physical attributes of the fill sand did not impede nesting attempts. We argue that the decrease in nesting success resulted from an altered beach profile not favorable for nest deposition, which subsequently improved in later seasons as the beach equilibrated to a more natural slope. We observed a 52.2% decrease in reproductive output (hatchlings km−1 yr−1) for Loggerheads one year postnourishment, with a 44.1% increase observed the two seasons postnourishment. In Green turtles, a 0.8% reduction was observed the first season postnourishment, despite a 13% increase in the nonnourished area. The reduction in reproductive output in both cases was primarily a consequence of decreased nesting success, lowering nest numbers. These results reveal stronger negative effects of beach nourishment on Loggerheads compared to Green turtles and the importance of minimizing excessive nonnesting emergences associated with artificial beach nourishment. Nourished areas also experienced more than 600% increase in the number of Loggerhead hatchlings disoriented by artificial lighting over two years postnourishment.  相似文献

The differential environmental sensitivity of the sexes hasstrong implications in the evolutionary history of species asit can alter sexual size dimorphism, population sex ratios,and the faculty of parents to manipulate offspring sex in relationto environmental conditions. We studied sexual differences inhatching patterns and evaluated sex- and size-related mortalityin relation to hatching order and brood sex ratios in the chinstrappenguin Pygoscelis antarctica, a moderately size-dimorphic species,with a modal clutch size of 2 eggs. We found that male, second-hatched,and large eggs showed shorter hatching periods than female,first-hatched, and small eggs. We also found a male-biased mortalityof nestlings in the colony. However, male mortality patternsdiffered depending on the brood sex ratio composition. Mortalityof male chicks in all-male broods was higher than in mixed broodsand higher than female mortality in all-female broods. Contrary,females from mixed brood showed higher mortality than theirmale nest mates and higher too than females in all-female broods.Second-hatched chicks also suffered from higher mortality thanfirst-hatched chicks. Our results indicate that both the superiorcompetitive capacity and the higher energy demand of the largersex constitute 2 causal factors explaining patterns of sex-biasedmortality. Both factors occur in the same species and in differentsituations of sibling competition shaped by brood sex ratiocomposition. This study constitutes a good example of how patternsof sex-related mortality can vary depending on nest environmentalcircumstances. Furthermore, our study suggests that hatchingperiod can be a mechanism underlying sexual differences in theembryonic period of birds.  相似文献

The effect of culture media on the range of temperatures at which the eggs may hatch as well as the rate of their hatching is also included. Summary

A supernatant from eggs of the ruminant nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis contained an enzyme that was similar to leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), based on hydrolysis of the substrate L-leucine β-naphthylamide to β-naphthylamine. A Michaelis-Menten constant (K m) of 0.155 mM was obtained. Rate of hydrolysis of 16 substrates revealed that L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine β-naphthylamides were hydrolyzed most readily while seven additional substrates were hydrolyzed at lesser rates. The optimum pH for enzymatic activity was 6.75–7.5. Enzymatic activity was lost by heating the egg supernatant to 60°C for 5 min or freezing at 0°C for 28 days. Addition of millimolar concentrations of the chlorides of zinc, manganese and magnesium to the egg supernatant had no stimulatory effect on enzyme activity while 10 and 100 mM concentrations significantly reduced activity. Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid at 10?4 M had no effect on enzymatic activity. Activity was inhibited by 10?4 M 1,10-phenanthroline, but the inhibition was reversed by zinc chloride at 10?3 M. Di-isopropylphosphofluoridate at 10?3 M reduced enzymatic activity moderately. Enzyme activity in egg supernatant increased 2.2-fold from 21 days to 60–90 days of a primary infection in the host while a 3.3-fold increase was found in primary versus secondary infections.  相似文献

A major drawback to the use in aquaculture of members of the Eubranchiopoda from temporary pool environments is that their eggs do not hatch readily. An investigation of the factors influencing the hatching of eggs of the fairy shrimpStreptocephalus macrourus, showed that light was the only factor of those investigated that was obligatory for hatching. It was found that eggs which had not been desiccated hatched successfully in the presence of absence of adults, while those which had been desiccated showed a block in hatching initially, although this block deteriorated with time and after approximately two months the eggs which had been desiccated showed a similar hatching success to that of the non-desiccated eggs. Exposure of eggs to extremes of heat or cold before incubation did not influence the hatching success of the eggs significantly, but the temperature at which incubation took place was important. The optimal range lay between 14 °C and 20 °C. Eggs hatched and nauplii survived at dissolved oxygen tensions of below 0.5 mg 1–1  相似文献

大凉螈是我国特有的珍稀有尾两栖动物,其种群数量目前呈现明显下降趋势,然而涉及该物种保护的繁殖生态学研究仍十分匮乏。通过融合围栏陷阱及标志重捕的样方调查法,对大凉螈石棉栗子坪种群繁殖个体和变态登陆幼体的迁徙、繁殖群体种群大小、繁殖场内雌雄有效性比变化等进行了研究。运用Jolly-Seber法估测了繁殖种群大小,运用单因素方差分析或Kruskal-Wallis秩和检验比较了不同时期进入繁殖场的雄性大凉螈头体长及体重,运用t检验或者Wilcoxon秩和检验比较了雌雄性间形态上的差异,运用t检验、t′检验或Wilcoxon秩和检验比较了野外抱对雄性与非抱对雄性间的体征差别,运用Pearson相关分析探讨了雌性产卵量与其身体形态的关系,同时观察了卵的孵化情况。研究结果表明:大凉螈的繁殖季为每年的4月下旬到7月下旬,幼体最早于8月上旬变态登陆。估测调查地繁殖场内雄性大凉螈繁殖种群大小约为391尾,雄螈较雌螈更早进入繁殖场且在场内停留时间更长,体重较轻的雄螈较晚迁入繁殖场。有效性比明显偏雄(雌/雄:0.03—0.10)。雌雄间具明显性二型性,雌性个体的头体长、体重及肥满度均大于雄性,而雄性的尾高和尾长占全长的比例则大于雌性。对比自然抱对雄性和非抱对雄性个体发现,抱对个体在头体长、体重和尾高等体征方面显著大于非抱对个体,暗示这些形态特征可能在雄性竞争配偶的过程中起到关键作用。雌螈在室内条件下平均产卵数为176枚,产卵历时2—4 d,产卵量与雌性肥满度正相关,卵的平均孵化期为15.7 d,孵出幼体平均全长为9.74 mm。  相似文献
