Culaea inconstans in delta Area, Lake Manitoba matures in the second summer of life, when between 29 and 65 mm in total length and one year of age. Spawning starts at the end of May after migration into the creeks and channels in the marsh. By June 11–12 the yearlings are under 20 mm in total length. The greatest part of growth is completed in the first summer of life. The asymptotic or average maximum length, L was 89.06 mm. Aging of fish was done by reading otoliths and plotting length frequency histograms. Fish set the first ring, a false check, in otoliths within the first month of life and the annual ring is set by the adults on June 1 of the second summer of life. Culaea inconstans was generally found to be an annual fish which died after spawning in the second summer of life. A high positive correlation coefficient was found for body-otolith relationship. The length-weight regression lines were significantly different from one another and from zero, the F-value being significant at 1% level. The condition factor was found to be variable. 相似文献

Morphometrics and growth of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis), which inhabits a freshwater lake in Finland were studied using data from 344 carcasses. This study presents the first detailed information on ringed seal pup growth and body condition from birth to the age of one year. Newborn pups were on average 68 cm long and weighed 5 kg. Pups attained the majority of their first year growth during the nursing period. Body condition and growth declined after weaning, but pups recovered from postweaning nutritional deprivation at the age of 8 mo. The seals achieved their maximum body length, girth, and mandible size around the age of 4 yr, and asymptotic body mass two years later. Baculum growth indicated that males reached sexual maturity at age 5–6 yr. The Saimaa ringed seals' asymptotic body length and mass were 132 cm and 59 kg, respectively, which is similar to medium sized marine ringed seals. Saimaa ringed seals' survival to adulthood is extremely low due to high bycatch mortality; furthermore climate change may hamper pup growth and elevate mortality. Postnatal growth is an important life‐history trait that varies widely across avian species, and several equations with a sigmoidal shape have been used to model it. Classical three‐parameter models have an inflection point fixed at a percentage of the upper asymptote which could be an unrealistic assumption generating biased fits. The Richards model emerged as an interesting alternative because it includes an extra parameter that determines the location of the inflection point which can move freely along the growth curve. Recently, nonlinear mixed models (NLMM) have been used in modeling avian growth because these models can deal with a lack of independence among data as typically occurs with multiple measurements on the same individual or on groups of related individuals. Here, we evaluated the usefulness of von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, logistic, U4 and Richards's equations modeling chick growth in the imperial shag Phalacrocorax atriceps. We modelled growth in commonly used morphological traits, including body mass, bill length, head length and tarsus length, and compared the performance of models by using NLMM. Estimated adult size, age at maximum growth and maximum growth rates markedly differed across models. Overall, the most consistent performance in estimated adult size was obtained by the Richards model that showed deviations from mean adult size within 5%. Based on AICc values, the Richards equation was the best model for all traits analyzed. For tarsus length, both Richards and U4 models provided indistinguishable fits because the relative inflection value estimated from the Richards model was very close to that assumed by the U4 model. Our results highlight the bias incurred by three‐parameter models when the assumed inflection placement deviates from that derived from data. Thus, the application of the Richards equation using the NLMM framework represents a flexible and powerful tool for the analysis of avian growth. 相似文献

In this paper, we consider a simple chemostat model involving two obligate mutualistic species feeding on a limiting substrate. Systems of differential equations are proposed as models of this association. A detailed qualitative analysis is carried out. We show the existence of a domain of coexistence, which is a set of initial conditions in which both species survive.
