Relative impacts of environmental variation and evolutionary history on the nestedness and modularity of tree–herbivore networks

Nestedness and modularity are measures of ecological networks whose causative effects are little understood. We analyzed antagonistic plant–herbivore bipartite networks using common gardens in two contrasting environments comprised of aspen trees with differing evolutionary histories of defence against herbivores. These networks were tightly connected owing to a high level of specialization of arthropod herbivores that spend a large proportion of the life cycle on aspen. The gardens were separated by ten degrees of latitude with resultant differences in abiotic conditions. We evaluated network metrics and reported similar connectance between gardens but greater numbers of links per species in the northern common garden. Interaction matrices revealed clear nestedness, indicating subsetting of the bipartite interactions into specialist divisions, in both the environmental and evolutionary aspen groups, although nestedness values were only significant in the northern garden. Variation in plant vulnerability, measured as the frequency of herbivore specialization in the aspen population, was significantly partitioned by environment (common garden) but not by evolutionary origin of the aspens. Significant values of modularity were observed in all network matrices. Trait-matching indicated that growth traits, leaf morphology, and phenolic metabolites affected modular structure in both the garden and evolutionary groups, whereas extra-floral nectaries had little influence. Further examination of module configuration revealed that plant vulnerability explained considerable variance in web structure. The contrasting conditions between the two gardens resulted in bottom-up effects of the environment, which most strongly influenced the overall network architecture, however, the aspen groups with dissimilar evolutionary history also showed contrasting degrees of nestedness and modularity. An immunoassay using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that are specific for different vertebrate taxa (from class to species) has been developed that simplifies and facilitates analysis of vertebrate blood meals from arthropod vectors. The MAbs have been prepared against the single protein albumin, the most abundant protein in vertebrate sera. A panel of these antibodies has been generated against albumins from 33 species of vertebrates, representing four classes, 15 orders, and 25 families. Immunoreactivity of albumin in mosquito blood meals can be detected as late as 48 h after feeding. Immunoassays with MAbs can be carried out in the field as well as the laboratory. Used in conjunction with nucleic acid assays or used alone with an appropriate assortment of antibodies, the assay is simple, sensitive, and unambiguous. 相似文献

Analysis of spinning and of silk domiciles revealed similarities and differences for three species of embiids: Antipaluria urichi (Saussure), Pararhagadochir trinitatis (Saussure), and Oligotoma saundersii (Westwood). Each exhibited similar routines while spinning; they positioned the silk by touching the substrate with either front tarsus and by moving the leg to the next position, with many silk strands issuing forth at each step. Reinforced pathways developed as they spun while traveling from diurnal retreats and nocturnal foraging zones. Frass from the interior of their domiciles was spun into the silk. O. saundersii was unique in that it plastered its silk with gathered materials. Analysis of field colonies of P. trinitatis and O. saundersii showed that, like A. urichi, adult females share their silk with offspring and, often, with other females. 相似文献

Mean daily food consumption and total lifetime food consumption of the spider, Nephila clavata, were estimated in natural populations. Daily food consumption in the late adult stage was 27–150 mg wet weight, which was nearly equivalent or slightly larger than that in other large web-building spiders. Considerable variation in food consumption was found among habitats or years. The largest variation among habitats in the same year was 7 and 5 fold for daily and lifetime consumption, respectively, while that among years in the same habitat was 3.5 and 2.5 for daily and lifetime consumption, respectively. Feeding conditions evaluated from the food consumption per body weight of spiders declined during the period from mid-July to mid-September in almost all the populations, which suggested that they faced to severe food limitation in this period. 相似文献

are resistant only to molting hormone, but still respond to RH 5992 morphologically and biochemically, whereas subclones selected
in the presence of the benzoylhydrazine showed no reaction neither to 20-OH-ecdysone nor to the hormone agonist. Hormone resistance
is stable; 3 mo. after hormone withdrawal, resistant clones still do not respond to renewed exposure to 20-OH-ecdysone or
RH 5992, respectively. Because in all resistant subclones tested so far all hormonally regulated responses known from sensitive

Biological control of larval mosquitoes is in great demand due to the development of resistance against synthetic insecticides, environmental toxicity and the inability to protect habitats from further oviposition. In the present study, three botanical essential oils (BEOs) – citronella, eucalyptus, and pine oils – were formulated for the assessment of larvicidal and oviposition repellent efficacies against Culex quinquefasciatus Say, the filaria vector. The GC–MS profiling of BEOs showed the presence of 16 – 19 compounds covering 87.7–93% of oil composition. The resistance status of Culex quinquefasciatus population was evaluated with temephos (LC50 = 0.001 ppm, LC90 = 0.01 ppm). Larval bioassay of emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulations prepared from eucalyptus and pine oils showed promising efficacy (LC50 = 22.7 and 23.2 ppm) and LC90 (63.8 and 62.4 ppm) compared to citronella oil EC (LC50 = 43.4 ppm and LC90 = 199.0 ppm). The field trials of eucalyptus + pine (1:1 ratio) EC showed 100% larval mortality for 3 weeks at 300 ppm compared to 2 weeks of individual oils. Further, the oviposition attraction index (OAI) for ECs of eucalyptus, pine, and their combination showed complete protection of breeding habitats from oviposition at 1st week and ?0.9 to ?1.0 OAI at 2nd week with slight reduction to ?0.5 at 3rd week. Citronella EC provided shortest larvicidal and oviposition repellent efficacy under the field conditions. The promising mosquitocidal activities of EC formulations of eucalyptus and pine or their combination suggest them as potential biocontrol vector control candidates over citronella oil. 相似文献

Sidnie Manton became best known for her work on arthropod locomotion, and for proposing radical views on the evolution of arthropods that were accepted for a generation. However, her early training was as an embryologist, and the work that she carried out at the beginning of her career still stands as one of the major twentieth century contributions to the study of crustacean embryology. Here, I review her first major paper, largely completed while she was a graduate student, describing embryonic development in Hemimysis lamornae, a small shrimp-like animal found in the seas around the UK. The clarity of her writing and the quality of her figures set a standard that laid the basis for subsequent work, and although not all of her conclusions have stood the test of time, they remain a standard reference for work today. This commentary was written to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. 相似文献
