The response of the predatory mite Amblyseius longispinosus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to the webnest of the spider mite nanjingensis (Acari: Tetranychidae) was examined using two-choice tests in the laboratory. A. longispinosus females were found significantly more often on leaves with webnests than on leaves without webnests and were often observed searching under the webbing. Because spider mites and their eggs were removed from the webnests before experiments, predators responded to stimuli associated with webbing, mite feeding damage and other residues in the webnests.  相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) cover the cuticle of virtually any insect and do not only protect them from desiccation, but also possess various communicative functions. Previous studies suggested a function as contact sex pheromones in the parasitic wasp family Pteromalidae, but further species need to be studied before more general conclusions are possible. Here, we demonstrate a contact sex pheromone in females of Dibrachys cavus (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). Males of this parasitoid were arrested on cadavers of 1‐ to 2‐day‐old females, but neither on newly emerged females nor on males. Extracts from 1‐ to 2‐day‐old females and non‐polar fractions were also behaviorally active suggesting a non‐polar contact sex pheromone. Chemical analyses of bioactive and non‐active CHC profiles by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and subsequent principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the bioactive profiles from 1‐ to 2‐day‐old females were clearly distinguishable from all other profiles. Among the chemicals showing the strongest impact in the PCA were the two 3‐methylalkanes 3‐methylnonacosane and 3‐methylhentriacontane, which were absent or trace components in the inactive profiles and whose relative amounts increased in females when they became sexually attractive. The putative function of 3‐methylalkanes as key components of the contact sex pheromones in Pteromalidae is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract:  The search time of Encarsia bimaculata Heraty et Polaszek was examined and recorded by using filter paper discs in Petri dish arenas impregnated with Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) honeydew or its component carbohydrates. Our data show that E. bimaculata used honeydew as a contact kairomone to locate its host. Females responded quantitatively to the honeydew and the search time in the treated patches increased. This increase was concentration-dependent with regard to the amount of honeydew applied, but it levelled off 0.05 g/ml onwards. The response of E. bimaculata to honeydew decreased with increasing time after application and was significantly reduced 8 days after treatment. The parasitoid females were also arrested in patches treated with glucose, fructose, trehalulose and trehalose; trehalose elicited the highest response in the parasitoids. However, sucrose and low concentrations of melezitose did not elicit a significant effect. Glucose, sucrose, fructose, trehalose and trehalulose increased the longevity of the parasitoid females by a factor of 8.4, 8.1, 6.3, 6.1 and 4.2, respectively. Melezitose and 0.15 g/ml natural honeydew, however, had no effect on parasitoid lifespan. The effects of aqueous spray of honeydew sugars on egg to adult survivorship and parasitization of B. tabaci by E. bimaculata significantly differed when compared with controls only in cases where mixtures of glucose + fructose and trehalose and fructose + trehalose were applied.  相似文献

1 Insects using olfactory stimuli to forage for prey/hosts are proposed to encounter a ‘reliability–detectability problem’, where the usability of a stimulus depends on its reliability as an indicator of herbivore presence and its detectability. 2 We investigated this theory using the responses of female seven‐spot ladybirds Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to plant headspace chemicals collected from the peach‐potato aphid Myzus persicae and four commercially available Brassica cultivars; Brassica rapa L. cultivar ‘turnip purple top’, Brassica juncea L. cultivar ‘red giant mustard’, Brassica napus L. cultivar ‘Apex’, Brassica napus L. cultivar ‘Courage’ and Arabidopsis thaliana. For each cultivar/species, responses to plants that were undamaged, previously infested by M. persicae and infested with M. persicae, were investigated using dual‐choice Petri dish bioassays and circular arenas. 3 There was no evidence that ladybirds responded to headspace chemicals from aphids alone. Ladybirds significantly preferred headspace chemicals from B. napus cv. Apex that were undamaged compared with those from plants infested with aphids. For the other four species/cultivars, there was a consistent trend of the predators being recorded more often in the half of the Petri dish containing plant headspace chemicals from previously damaged and infested plants compared with those from undamaged ones. Furthermore, the mean distance ladybirds walked to reach aphid‐infested A. thaliana was significantly shorter than to reach undamaged plants. These results suggest that aphid‐induced plant chemicals could act as an arrestment or possibly an attractant stimulus to C. septempunctata. However, it is also possible that C. septempunctata could have been responding to aphid products, such as honeydew, transferred to the previously damaged and infested plants. 4 The results provide evidence to support the ‘reliability–detectability’ theory and suggest that the effectiveness of C. septempunctata as a natural enemy of aphids may be strongly affected by which species and cultivar of Brassica are being grown.  相似文献

The responses of females of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) to volatile and contact chemicals from its host Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer and under open arena conditions. In the Y-tube tests, volatiles from virgin males and from females in a preovipositional state attracted T. basalis females, while volatiles from host virgin females did not. In an open arena, traces left by N. viridula adults in different physiological conditions function as contact cues inducing the wasps to remain longer in the arena and to change the pattern of their walking behavior. However, only contact kairomones from N. viridula mated females in a preovipositional condition induced an arrestment response characterized by an increase in patch searching time and turning rates and a reduction in linear speed. The chemical ecological implications of these results on this host–parasitoid association are discussed.  相似文献

The response of female Apanteles kariyai (Watanabe) to a fecal pellet of its host, Pseudaletia separata (Walker) was observed in the laboratory. The arrestment response of A. kariyai to a fecal pellet was characterized by a reduction of walking speed and increased turing rate. During arrestment, A. kariyai turned back towards the fecal pellet several times after she had left it. Using patches impregnated with the synthetic kairomone 2,5-dihexadecyltetrahydrofuran, it was determined that the time spent in arrestment response increased with increasing kairomone concentration but leveled off above 10-4 mg kairomone per patch. A. kariyai demonstrated two modes of arrestment response towards the patch (patch-searching mode and patch-edge-following mode), which were dependent on the amount of kairomone per patch. During successive visits to the patch, walking speed increased whereas time spent and distance walked on the patch decreased. Postoviposition behavior of A. kariyai was also studied using the kairomone patch. Immediately after oviposition, the wasp did not respond to the kairomone stimuli or to a host and always walked away from the patch.

The functional response of the egg parasitoid Uscana lariophaga Steffan (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) to eggs of its host Callosobruchus maculatus Fab. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) was investigated in storage containers filled with a cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.) seed mass. Foraging time was limited to 4 or 24 h. These indirect experiments were supplemented by direct observations of the parasitoid's handling time, egg-laying capacity and initial egg load. The foraging process of U. lariophaga can be divided into two distinct stages: the process leading to detection of host clusters and, after arrival within a host cluster, the response of the parasitoid to the host density within the cluster. The chance that a cluster is found by U. lariophaga appeared independent of the number of host eggs per cluster, but was influenced by the available foraging time. Within a host cluster, U. lariophaga demonstrated a Holling II type functional response. Parasitoids were strongly arrested in host clusters, leading to high levels of parasitism. Direct observations proved that handling time was not a limiting factor, but that U. lariophaga's initial egg load and egg maturation rate limited the plateau level of her functional response. As such, direct observations were essential for a correct interpretation of the mechanisms underlying the shape of the functional response.  相似文献

Mating of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus is mediated by chemical stimuli on the cuticle of females. Males are arrested on the dorsum of females attached to the host, frequently sample the substrate, and then tip-over to the ventrally located gonopore. These behaviours are also observed in vitro when males are placed on a small glass bead treated with a female extract. Time spent and tip-over by male ticks on dummies is used in an assay to test the behavioural significance of fractions of the extract. TLC separation yields one apolar fraction that arrests males, though much less so than the whole extract, but lost tip-over behaviour. This apolar fraction contains a series of cholesteryl esters that, when tested individually, show no arrestment activity at levels present in the extract but, when combined, are as active as the fraction. When a small silica column is used for fractionation, all biological activity is reproduced after recombining the fractions. In addition to the early eluting apolar fraction containing cholesteryl esters, a set of highly active more polar fractions is isolated. Electrophysiological recordings from gustatory sensilla on the pedipalps of male B. microplus, which are regularly brought into contact with the cuticle of the female during mating, provide evidence for receptors in two of them responding to the whole extract and to the behaviourally active polar fractions. Mating behaviour involving arrestment and tip-over is clearly initiated by a mixture of chemical stimuli, and tip-over behaviour is associated with the more polar material. Arch. Insect Biochem. The behaviour of Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) males was studied in overlapping sex pheromone plumes in a wind tunnel. The ultimate aim of the study was to assess the effect of different treatments on male behaviour and consider the observed changes within the context of the suggested mechanisms underlying mating disruption. Two baits were placed either in series or parallel using both synthetic pheromone blends and female extracts. One bait, the reference containing (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate/(E)-8-dodecenyl acetate/(Z)-8-dodecenol in a ratio of 100/6/10 was kept constant at a dose of 100 g of the main component, giving a composition and a release rate close to that of a female. The dose of the other bait varied between 0.1 and 100 times the concentration of the reference and was a mixture of one, two or three pheromone components. Males clearly discriminated between different blends and doses in the overlapping plumes, for regardless if the lures were presented in series or in parallel they followed the complete plume. Complete suppression of the response to the reference was only achieved with 300 g of the optimal three-component blend on the other lure. When tested singly, a bait consisting of Z8-12:OAc/E8-12:OAc/Z8-12:O Hin a 100/0.2/0.4 ratio, attracted a high proportion of the males when placed 75 cm upwind of the male release site, but no males from 150 cm. Our data suggest that complete pheromone blends should be more effective than any incomplete blends in mating disruption formulations for G. molesta.  相似文献

The functional response of the egg parasitoid Uscana lariophaga Steffan (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was tested under three different host distributions (even, clumped and random) within clusters of Callosobruchus maculatus Fab. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) eggs. A Holling Type II functional response was found for all three distributions. Over low host densities, less than 50% of the host clusters was parasitized. At low host densities, U. lariophaga females parasitized significantly fewer eggs in random egg clusters with many beans than in clusters with fewer beans and an even or clumped egg distribution. At higher egg densities, plateau levels of maximum number of hosts parasitized were the same for all three egg distributions. Uscana lariophaga appears to be adapted to search for even or clustered egg distributions, as can be found in the field and under storage conditions.  相似文献
