The shoot growth of compatible ( Prunus persica L. Batsch cv. Springtime grafted on Prunus cerasifera L. Ehrh cv. Myrobolan P2032) and incompatible ( Prunus persica L. Batsch cv. Springtime grafted on Prunus cerasifera L. Ehrh cv. Myrobolan P18) peach/plum grafts was observed over a period of 100 days after grafting under controlled conditions. Leaf and root activities were determined by studying carbon assimilation and partitioning, leaf mineral contents and water relations. Shoot length and leaf number were not significantly affected in the incompatible combination during the first 55 days after grafting, but then, shoot growth rate was significantly reduced. Final total dry weights of the shoot were similar in both graft combinations. The incompatible combination did not show any water stress. Soluble sugar and starch contents increased in the leaves of the incompatible combination, accounting for about 36% of the increase of leaf dry weight per unit area. Photosynthesis was affected by the compatibility of the grafts. Leaf nitrogen content (% dry weight) fell in the incompatible graft combination 65 days after grafting. However, nitrogen content on an area basis was not affected. The possibility of nitrogen stress is discussed. 相似文献

The social relationships of adult male rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in Group I of the Cayo Santiago colony were studied over a period of 14 months. Relationships were found in which adult
males and sexually mature females were persistently close to one another in nonsexual contexts, both within and across seasons.
Males of long tenure and high dominance rank tended to have more female partners, and more persistent relationships, than
more recent immigrants of lower rank. Correlations with length of tenure were stronger than those with dominance rank. Closely-related
females tended to have persistent relationships with the same male. In most cases the female was primarily responsible for
maintaining proximity in non-sexual contexts.
Dyads which were persistently within 5 m of each other in the birth season were more likely to form a consortship in the subsequent
mating season than those which had a brief relationship. A similar tendency was apparent in the 1 m data but it was not statistically
significant. There was no association between persistent proximity during the birth season and the occurrence of long, or
multiple consortships, nor with the maintenance of proximity or direction of grooming between consort partners. The pattern
of consortships was not closely related to the formation of persistent relationships in the subsequent birth season. Females
occasionally received protection from their male partners and, in some cases, spent more time in the feeding corral with them
than did other females.
Affiliative relationships can be very enduring and may have long-term benefits that were not apparent during the study period. 相似文献

Studies demonstrating differences in chloroplast structure and biochemistry have been used to formulate hypotheses concerning the origin of algal plastids. Genetic and biochemical experiments indicate that significant variation occurs in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco) when supertaxa of eukaryotic algae are compared. These differences include variations in the organelle location of the genes and their arrangement, mechanism of Rubisco synthesis, polypeptide immunological reactivity and sequence, as well as efficacy of substrate (ribulose bisphosphate and CO2) binding and inhibitor (6-phosphogluconate) action. The structure-function relationships observed among chromophytic, rhodophytic, chlorophytic and prokaryotic Rubisco demonstrate that: (a) similarities among chromophytic and rhodophytic Rubisco exist in substrate/inhibitor binding and polypeptide sequence, (b) characteristic differences in enzyme kinetics and subunit polypeptide structure occur among chlorophytes, prokaryotes and chromophytes/rhodophytes, and (c) there is structural variability among chlorophytic plant small subunit polypeptides, in contrast to the conservation of this polypeptide in chromophytes and rhodophytes. Taxa-specific differences among algal Rubisco enzymes most likely reflect the evolutionary history of the plastid, the functional requirements of each polypeptide, and the consequences of encoding the large and small subunit genes in the same or different organelles. 相似文献

Summary Several members of the adipokinetic/hyperglycemic neurohormone family from several different invertebrate species have been prepared by solid-phase peptide synthesis and assayed by a modified in vivo hyperglycemic bioassay in Blaberus discoidalis cockroaches. The hypertrehalosemic hormone (HrTH) is the endogenous hypertrehalosemic factor for B. discoidalis and was the most potent peptide in the assay. The more divergent the sequence of a family member from Blaberus HrTH, the less potent was the bioanalog. Manduca adipokinetic hormone is the most divergent peptide of the family and was totally inactive in the bioassay. Locusta adipokinetic hormone I had reduced maximum activity in the assay, which suggests that Ser5 is an important residue for the transduction of the hyperglycemic response. The direct relation between bioanalog similarity to Blaberus HrTH sequence and potency suggests that the hormone and target cell receptor for HrTH have evolved to maintain an optimal fit.Abbreviations

Abstract: This study examined the hypothesis that chronic ethanol consumption results in significant abnormalities in both the dopaminergic and the serotonergic system of aged rats. Levels of dopamine (DA), serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)], 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) were determined in brain areas of both the nigrostriatal and mesocorticolimbic DA systems in 5-, 14-, and 24-month-old male Fischer 344 rats. Aging was associated with a reduced concentration of DA in the striatum (ST), ventral tegmental area (VTA), and ventral pallidum (VP) and an increased concentration of 5-HIAA in the ST, globus pallidus, nucleus accumbens, frontal cortex, and VP. In addition, there was an increase in the 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio in all brain areas analyzed. Six weeks of ethanol consumption was accompanied by significant changes in mesocorticolimbic brain areas. In the VTA of 5-month-old ethanol-fed rats DA content was decreased to the levels found in aged rats, e.g., 24 months of age. Ethanol also significantly lowered 5-HT and 5-HIAA contents in the VTA and reduced DOPAC and 5-HIAA levels in the VP. In addition, ethanol blunted the normal age-related increase in 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio in the VTA, VP, and substantia nigra. It is interesting that although the age-related changes were found in both nigrostriatal and mesocorticolimbic brain areas, the ethanol-associated effects were found only in brain areas of the mesocorticolimbic system. The changes in DA and 5-HT function that accompany aging and ethanol consumption may contribute to the problems in motor function and ethanol abuse found in the aged. 相似文献

This paper describes a set of mathematical models to calculate runoff, soil erosion and chemical substance yields for drainage areas. The models represent different degrees of complexity and details of describing hydrological and hydrochemical processes. The availability of initial information and the requirements of the task determine the choice of a model for each particular case. These models have been written as PC/AT programs, to enable their use by a wide range of specialists. The models have been tested in different physical and geographical conditions, e.g. in some small watersheds on the Karelian Isthmus, west of Lake Ladoga, and in experimental catchment areas located in the Valdai Hills area in the southern part of Lake Ladoga drainage area. In further applications the drainage area models have been combined with models of the recipient water body, to obtain a single model of a watershed-lake system. The results of tests have proved that the models can be used for evaluation, simulation and forecasting of the processes of rainfall and snowmelt runoff, infiltration, evaporation, water erosion and pollutant wash-off from drainage areas. 相似文献

Crustacean zooplankton species richness and associations in reservoirs and ponds of Aguascalientes State, Mexico 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
We report the species of crustacean zooplankton found in 19 resevoirs and ponds that were sampled at on at least two occasions in Aguascalientes State, Mexico, at a latitude of about 21°30 North Latitude. We collected a total of 33 cladoceran taxa, 15 calanoid and cyclopoid copepods, an Ergasilus copepod, 2 anostracans, one notostracan species and an amphipod. All these taxa had previously been reported in Mexico. As in more temperate areas, there was a significant correlation between the species richness and lake size. The species-area relationship for Aguascalientes was indistinguishable from that of more northerly lakes. The two most common associations of zooplankton species were (1) those small species that occurred with fish: Daphnia parvula, Diaphanosoma birgei, Leptodiaptomus siciloides, Mastigodiaptomus albuquerquensis, and Thermocyclops inversus, and (2) the large Daphnia schodleri that occurred with the predator Notonecta, in the absence of fish. This study examined the localized action of neuropeptide Y (NPY) on monoamine transmitter activity in the hypothalamus of
the unrestrained rat as this peptide induced hypothermia, spontaneous feeding or both responses simultaneously. A guide tube
was implanted in the anterior hypothalamic pre-optic area (AH/POA) of Sprague-Dawley rats. Then either control CSF vehicle
or NPY in a dose of either 100 ng/μl or 250 ng/μl was perfused by push-pull cannulae in this structure in the fully sated,
normothermic rat. Successive perfusions were carried out at a rate of 20 μl/min for 6.0 min with an interval of 6.0 min elapsing
between each. Samples of perfusate were assayed by HPLC for their levels of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin
(5-HT) and their respective metabolites. Whereas control CSF was without effect on body temperature (Tb) or feeding, repeated perfusions of NPY over 3.0 hr caused dose—dependent eating from 4 to 39 g of food, hypothermia of 0.9
to 2.3°C or both responses concurrently. As the rats consumed 11–39 g of food, the efflux of NE, MHPG, DOPAC and 5-HT was
enhanced significantly, whereas during the fall in Tb the efflux of NE, DOPAC and 5-HIAA from the AH/POA increased. When the Tb of the rat declined simultaneously with eating behavior, the levels in perfusate of DOPAC and HVA increased significantly
while MHPG declined. During perfusion of the AH/POA with NPY the turnover of NE declined while DA and 5-HT turnover increased
during hypothermia alone or when accompanied by feeding. These results demonstrate that the sustained elevation in NPY within
the AH/POA causes a selective alteration in the activity of the neurotransmitters implicated in thermoregulation, satiety
and hunger. These findings suggest that both DA and NE comprise intermediary factors facilitating the action of NPY on neurons
involved in thermoregulatory and ingestive processes. The local activity of NPY on hypothalamic neurons apparently shifts
the functional balance of serotonergic and catecholaminergic neurons now thought to play a primary role in the control of
energy metabolism and caloric intake. 相似文献
