Extremely low frequency magnetic fields interact with an animal by inducing internal electric fields, which are in addition to the normal endogenous fields present in living animals. Male rats weighing about 560 g each were anesthetized with ketamine and xylazine. Small incisions were made in the ventral body wall at the chest and upper abdomen to position a miniature probe for measuring internal electric fields. The calibration constant for the probe size was 5.7 mm, with a flat response from at least 12 Hz to 20 kHz. A cardiac signal, similar to the normal electrocardiogram with a heart rate of about 250 bpm, was readily obtained at the chest. Upon analysis of its spectrum, the cardiac field detected by the probe had a broad maximum at 32–95 Hz. When the rats were exposed to a 1 mT, 60 Hz magnetic field, a spike appeared in the spectrum at 60 Hz. The peak-to-peak magnitudes of electric fields associated with normal heart function were comparable to fields induced by a 1 mT magnetic field at 60 Hz for those positions measured on the body surface (where induced fields were maximal). Within the body, or in different directions relative to the applied field, the induced fields were reduced (reaching zero at the center of the animal). The cardiac field increased near the heart, becoming much larger than the induced field. Thus, the cardiac electric field, together with the other endogenous fields, combine with induced electric fields and help to provide reference levels for the induced-field dosimetry of ELF magnetic field exposures of living animals. The effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields of 75 Hz were studied on different membrane-associated enzymes. Only the activities of three enzymes out of seven exposed to the field decreased approximately of about 54-61% with field amplitudes above a threshold of 73-151 microT depending on the enzyme. The same field had no effect on the activities of either integral membrane enzymes such as Ca,ATPase, Na/K,ATPase, and succinic dehydrogenase or peripheral membrane enzymes such as photoreceptor PDE. The decrease in enzymatic activity of the field-sensitive enzymes was independent of the time of permanence in the field and was completely reversible. When these enzymes were solubilized with Triton, no effect of the field was obtained on the enzymatic activity, suggesting the crucial role of the membrane in determining the conditions for enzyme inactivation. Mobile phone users often complain about burning sensations or a heating of the ear region. The increase in temperature may be due to thermal insulation by the phone, heating of the mobile phone resulting from its electrical power dissipation, and radio frequency (RF) exposure. The main objective of this study was to use infrared (IR) camera techniques to find how much each of these factors contributes to the increase in skin temperature resulting from the use of one GSM 900 phone. One subject, a healthy male, took part in the study. He was holding the phone in a normal position when the phone was switched off, when it was switched on but with the antenna replaced by a 50 Omega load to eliminate the RF exposure, and when it was transmitting RF fields. The output power could be fixed, and the minimal and the maximal power levels of the phone were used. The study was designed as a double blind experiment. The changes in temperature after 15 and 30 min of mobile phone use were calculated on the exposed side of the head relative to the unexposed side. The insulation and the electrical power dissipation led to statistically significant rises in the skin temperature, while the RF exposure did not. 相似文献

Drosophila flies placed in a habitat with two lateral boxes demonstrated sensitivity to magnetic fields: Oviposition decreased by exposure to pulsated extremely low frequency (ELF) (100)Hz, 1.76 miliTesla (mT) and sinusosidal fields (50 Hz, 1 mT), while there was no initial effect of exposure to a static magnetic field (4.5 mT). Drosophila eggs treated for 48 h with the above described fields showed that (1) mortality of eggs was lower in controls than in eggs exposed to all tested magnetic fields; (2) mortality of larvae increased when a permanent magnet was used; (3) mortality of pupae was highest when a permanent magnet was used; and (4) general adult viability was highest in controls (67%) and diminished progressively when eggs were exposed to pulsated (55%), sinusoidal (45%), and static (35%) magnetic fields. 相似文献

Initial studies with the erythropoietin-sensitive human hematopoietic cell line, TF1, demonstrated both multifarious effects
of pulsed electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure on lipid signal transduction and antiproliferative effects of EMF. Stimulation
of TF1 cells with erythropoietin resulted in increased phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity within 2 min. Addition of wortmannin,
an inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, produced a decrease in cell proliferation as measured by accumulation of cells
in the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle and suppression of erythropoietin-induced DNA synthesis. Similar effects on cell proliferation were
seen under EMF treatment. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity in erythropoietin-stimulated TF1 cells, measured in whole-cell
extracts, increased 34% within 2 min and remained above basal levels for at least 20 min. EMF decreased erythropoietin-stimulated
phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity to lower than basal levels. Additionally, translocation of the 85-kDa regulatory subunit
(p85) of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase to the membrane was prevented by EMF. Phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C
was activated, as reflected by increases in diacylglycerol and inositol trisphosphate at 15–60 s after EMF treatment. These
results provide the first evidence of subtle coordinated changes by EMF associated with loss of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase

It has been suggested that “double-wound” (bifilar) exposure coils are capable of producing a sham environment in which hum and vibration will be “similar” to the field-exposed condition. We found by direct measurements in a bifilar coil system that vibration amplitude in sham and exposed conditions differed by a factor of 50 when our test system was driven at B = 10 mT. In this work we propose a fully Bayesian semiparametric method to estimate the intensity of an inhomogeneous spatial point process. The basic idea is to first convert intensity estimation into a Poisson regression setting via binning data points on a regular grid, and then model the log intensity semiparametrically using an adaptive version of Gaussian Markov random fields to smooth the corresponding counts. The inference is carried by an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation algorithm. Compared to existing methods for intensity estimation, for example, parametric modeling and kernel smoothing, the proposed estimator not only provides inference regarding the dependence of the intensity function on possible covariates, but also uses information from the data to adaptively determine the amount of smoothing at the local level. Magnetic resonance guidance in particle therapy has the potential to improve the current performance of clinical workflows. However, the presence of magnetic fields challenges the current algorithms for treatment planning. To ensure proper dose calculations, compensation methods are required to guarantee that the maximum deposited energy of deflected beams lies in the target volume. In addition, proper modifications of the intrinsic dose calculation engines, accounting for magnetic fields, are needed. In this work, an algorithm for proton treatment planning in magnetic fields was implemented in a research treatment planning system (TPS), matRad. Setup-specific look up tables were generated using a validated MC model for a clinical proton beamline (62.4 – 215.7 MeV) interacting with a dipole magnet (B = 0–1 T). The algorithm was successfully benchmarked against MC simulations in water, showing gamma index (2%/2mm) global pass rates higher than 96% for different plan configurations. Additionally, absorbed depth doses were compared with experimental measurements in water. Differences within 2% and 3.5% in the Bragg peak and entrance regions, respectively, were found. Finally, treatment plans were generated and optimized for magnetic field strengths of 0 and 1 T to assess the performance of the proposed model. Equivalent treatment plans and dose volume histograms were achieved, independently of the magnetic field strength. Differences lower than 1.5% for plan quality indicators (D2%, D50%, D90%, V95% and V105%) in water, a TG119 phantom and an exemplary prostate patient case were obtained. More complex treatment planning studies are foreseen to establish the limits of applicability of the proposed model. 相似文献
