A Sea Change in Anthropology? Public Anthropology Reviews

ABSTRACT  In this article, we introduce the inaugural issue of the "Public Anthropology Reviews" section. We suggest that the new section reflects significant changes underway in the discipline, including an expansion in the kind of work valued among anthropologists, new ways in which anthropological knowledge is being produced and disseminated, and an acknowledgment that anthropologists have a responsibility to dedicate their skills to issues of broad public import. The section will, thus, expose AA readers to some of the new anthropological work appearing in a wide variety of media and nontraditional academic formats that aims both to communicate primarily with nonanthropological audiences and to have an impact on critical issues of wide social significance. We here present the reviews in this issue, identify additional contemporary issues likely to be addressed in future reviews, and welcome submissions and critical feedback for the section.     

The Effect of Emotional Distance on Psychophysiologic Concordance and Perceived Empathy Between Patient and Interviewer

– This preliminary study investigated the effect of emotional distance on psychophysiologic concordance and perceived empathy in a clinical population. Participants included 20 adult outpatients from a mental health clinic that underwent a brief semi-structured interview with a trained psychiatrist in either an emotionally neutral or an emotionally distant condition. Simultaneous skin conductance (SC) levels of the patient and interviewer were recorded and used to calculate a measure of psychophysiologic concordance. Interviewer gaze was rated by an independent observer and used as a proxy indicator of emotional distance. Observer ratings of interviewer gaze, SC concordance, and patient ratings of perceived interviewer empathy were significantly lower in the emotionally distant condition compared with the emotionally neutral condition (p < 0.05). Results suggest that increased emotional distance is associated with decreased psychophysiologic concordance and reduced subjective ratings of perceived empathy. The observed differences in psychophysiologic concordance support the use of this measure as a potential marker of empathy in a clinical population in an interview setting.     

Traditional melissopalynology integrated by multivariate analysis and sampling methods to improve botanical and geographical characterisation of honeys

Abstract

Melissopalynological analysis is the official test to determine the botanical and geographical origin of honey. Geographical characterisation is generally obtained by synthesising the pollen data of all available local honeys in a pollen spectrum interpreted according to palynological expertise. The subjective ability to interpret data is considered a limiting factor for this method and alternative tests are promoted. Nevertheless, melissopalynological analysis is still the most reliable test, and data, if properly exploited, could provide a large amount of information that is generally disregarded. The aim of our work was to apply a new experimental approach for honey sampling, and a statistical multivariate analysis of melissopalynological data. The study was conducted in the Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula (southern Italy) where 36 hives were positioned in 12 experimental stations distributed in three main land-use types (citrus orchards, chestnut woods and Mediterranean maquis). The new approach proved to be useful for the comprehensive evaluation of honey variability across time and space, allowing objective identification of the pollen types as markers of a given geographical area.     

From forest fires to fisheries management: Anthropology,conservation biology,and historical ecology

Human‐environmental relationships have long been of interest to a variety of scientists, including ecologists, biologists, anthropologists, and many others. 1 , 2 In anthropology, this interest was especially prevalent among cultural ecologists of the 1970s and earlier, who tended to explain culture as the result of techno‐environmental constraints. 3 More recently researchers have used historical ecology, an approach that focuses on the long‐term dialectical relationship between humans and their environments, as well as long‐term prehuman ecological datasets. 4 - 7 An important contribution of anthropology to historical ecology is that anthropological datasets dealing with ethnohistory, traditional ecological knowledge, and human skeletal analysis, as well as archeological datasets on faunal and floral remains, artifacts, geochemistry, and stratigraphic analysis, provide a deep time perspective (across decades, centuries, and millennia) on the evolution of ecosystems and the place of people in those larger systems. Historical ecological data also have an applied component that can provide important information on the relative abundances of flora and fauna, changes in biogeography, alternations in food webs, landscape evolution, and much more.     

“小组学习”模式在基础医学课程中的实践应用：以医学免疫学为例

将"小组学习"模式应用于基础医学课程"医学免疫学"的教学,在理论课堂采用案例导学、问题导学、角色转换导学和专题讨论导学,实践教学过程针对课堂实验、实验选修课和大学生创新创业项目进行层次化导学。综合运用思维导图、问卷星、成长袋等多元化教学方法和手段,编写思政案例库进行专业课课程思政,结合小组过程性考核进行多元化考核评价。该模式通过培养学生自主学习能力、小组合作能力、实践能力、创新能力和人文素质,为培养高素质、高能力的应用型医学人才奠定基础。该教学模式得到了绝大多数学生的认同,可为基础医学及其他相关课程的开展及高校人才培养提供思路和参考。     

太湖地区黄泥土壤水稻氮素利用与经济生态适宜施氮量

通过田间试验对不同施肥水平下太湖地区黄泥土壤水稻的氮肥吸收规律和氮肥利用效率进行了研究,并应用15N微区试验测定不同氮肥水平下氮肥损失数量。在此研究数据基础上,引入数学的微积分原理和环境经济学的Coase原理,对该地区水稻田氮肥施用的经济效益和环境效益进行评价,求得219~255 kg hm^-2为太湖地区黄泥土上目前生产条件下,兼顾生产、生态和经济三效益比较合理的水稻施肥量,相应的经济、生态适宜产量为8601～8662 kg hm^-2。
