Coastal protection remains a global priority. Protection and maintenance of shoreline integrity is often a goal of many coastal protection programs. Typically, shorelines are protected by armoring them with hard, non‐native, and nonsustainable materials such as limestone. This study investigated the potential shoreline protection role of created, three‐dimensional Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) shell reefs fringing eroding marsh shorelines in Louisiana. Experimental reefs (25 × 1.0 × 0.7 m; intertidal) were created in June 2002 at both high and low wave energy shorelines. Six 25‐m study sites (three cultched and three control noncultched) were established at each shoreline in June 2002, for a total of 12 sites. Shoreline retreat was reduced in cultched low‐energy shorelines as compared to the control low‐energy shorelines (analysis of variance; p < 0.001) but was not significantly different between cultched and noncultched sites in high‐energy environments. Spat set increased from 0.5 ± 0.1 spat/shell in July 2002 to a peak of 9.5 ± 0.4 spat/shell in October 2002. On average, oyster spat grew at a rate of 0.05 mm/day through the duration of the study. Recruitment and growth rates of oyster spat suggested potential reef sustainability over time. Small fringing reefs may be a useful tool in protecting shorelines in low‐energy environments. However, their usefulness may be limited in high‐energy environments.  相似文献

1. The presence and distribution of the polecat Mustela putorius in Luxembourg was studied for the first time. Postal surveys were conducted among all the tenants of the hunting areas and all the farmers in the country. 2. Except for the otter Lutra lutra, the polecat appears to be the least common mustelid in Luxembourg. Farmers and hunters perceived the polecat differently according to their interests. Farmers had a more tolerant attitude towards the species but 17% still considered it a pest. 3. Live trapping of polecats was carried out for 3 years: 16 individuals were caught. This suggests a very low population density. Hunting records of this mustelid were examined for the period 1955–2000. There has been a very strong decrease in the number of polecats killed, giving rise to concerns that its population may be dramatically declining. Moreover, hunting data from neighbouring Germany confirm that this is a regional situation.  相似文献

Summary Poly β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is an energy and carbon storage material accumulated in response to the limitation of an essential nutrient. The effect of different salt concentrations on growth and PHB accumulation of four different Sinorhizobium strains was examined. Irrespective of the strain, a defined trend in the accumulation of PHB inside the cells was observed. While minimum PHB content was accumulated at low or zero salinity, maximum was observed by the salt-tolerant strains at higher salt concentrations. This suggests a definite role for PHB in cell protection in saline conditions.  相似文献

A simple, rapid and sensitive procedure using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) to measure methotrexate, folinic acid and folic acid in human urine has been developed and validated. Optimum separation of methotrexate, folinic acid and folic acid was obtained on a 60 cm x 75 microm capillary using a 15 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 12.0), temperature and voltage 20 degrees C and 25 kV, respectively and hydrodynamic injection. Under these conditions the analysis takes approximately 9.0 min. Good results were obtained for different aspects including stability of the solutions, linearity, accuracy and precision. Before CZE determination, the urine samples were purified and enriched by means of a solid phase extraction step with a preconditioned C(18) cartridge and eluting the compound with a mixture 1:1 of methanol:water. A linear response over the urine concentration range 1.0-6.0 mgL(-1) for MTX and 0.5-6.0 mgL(-1) for folinic acid and folic acid was observed. Detection limits for the three compound in urine were 0.35 mgL(-1). CZE was shown to be a good method with regard to simplicity, satisfactory precision, and sensitivity.  相似文献

Epimers at C-20 of methyl 11beta,17alpha,20-trihydroxy-3-oxo-1,4-pregnadien-21-oates, their 9alpha-fluoro analogs, their carbonate derivatives, and their acetonide derivatives were subjected to metabolism study in rat plasma and rat liver homogenate. These steroids were synthesized based on the antedrug concept. In rat plasma, the carboxy ester bonds of 20beta-triols and their acetonides were hydrolyzed with half-lives (T(1/2)) of between 5.7 and 7.7 min, while their corresponding alpha-epimers had longer half-lives of more than 2.5 h. A more profound difference was observed between the alpha- and beta-epimers of the carbonates, with the latter showing a T(1/2) less than 1 min (0.3 and 0.43 min for P20beta- and PF20beta-carbonate, respectively), while that of the former about 3 h (165 min for P20alpha-carbonate and 191 min for PF20alpha-carbonate). In rat liver homogenate, the triol and acetonide derivatives showed greater stability than they did in rat plasma, with T(1/2) for the beta-group in the range of 54-108 min, and T(1/2) for the alpha-group over 7 h. A significant difference in hydrolysis of the carbonate derivatives was also observed in rat liver homogenate. The half-lives of P20beta- and PF20beta-carbonate were 0.67 and 0.66 min, respectively, and the alpha-isomers showed the similar metabolic rate with other alpha-isomers. An esterase inhibitor effectively blocked the hydrolysis of the ester bond, indicating that this metabolism is an enzymatic reaction. Molecular modeling studies show that steric hindrance around the ester group of the alpha-epimers is much greater than that of their beta-counterparts, affording one explanation for the large difference in the metabolic hydrolysis rate; i.e. the carboxy ester bond of beta-isomer which is less hindered sterically than their counter alpha-isomers is hydrolyzed faster than that of alpha-isomers. In conclusion, this study confirms that chirality at C-20 had profound effects on metabolism and pharmacological profile of the steroid acid ester derivatives.  相似文献

The entrapment of enzymes, drugs, cells or tissue fragments in alginates cross-linked with Ca2+ or Ba2+ has great potential in basic research, biotechnology and medicine. The swelling properties and, in turn, the mechanical stability are key factors in designing an optimally cross-linked hydrogel matrix. These parameters depend critically on the cross-linking process and seemingly minor modifications in manufacture have a large impact. Thus, sensitive and non-invasive tools are required to determine the spatial homogeneity and efficacy of the cross-linking process. Here, we show for alginate microcapsules (between 400 µm and 600 µm in diameter) that advanced 1H NMR imaging, along with paramagnetic Cu2+ as contrast agent, can be used to validate the cross-linking process. Two- and three-dimensional images and maps of the spin-lattice relaxation time T1 of Ba2+ cross-linked microcapsules exposed to external Cu2+ yielded qualitative as well as quantitative information about the accumulation of Cu2+ within and removal from microcapsules upon washing with Cu2+ free saline solution. The use of Cu2+ (having a slightly higher affinity constant to alginate than Ba2+) for gelling gave a complementary insight into the spatial homogeneity of the cross-linking process together with information about the mechanical stability of the microcapsules. The potential of this technique was demonstrated for alginates extracted from two different algal sources and cross-linked either externally by the conventional air-jet dropping method or internally by the "crystal gun" method.  相似文献

AIMS: To develop an in vitro protocol in order to assess the antiseptic properties of a quaternary ammonium compound polymerized with acrylic denture resin base, using experimental resin discs and dialysis membranes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Experimental acrylic resin discs were polymerized with Poly 202063A, an ammonium compound (2-50%). Antiseptic properties were assayed against two reference strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus) and a laboratory strain (Candida albicans), using three different conditions (test A, B and C). In test A, according to classical protocols the resin discs were first soaked in large volumes of microbial inoculum (45 ml). An original dialysis protocol was then designed to recreate the small biofilm volume on the prosthetic surface. In test B, discs and bacterial inoculum (600 microl) were introduced in a dialysis bag and dialysed against a sterile buffer. A bactericidal effect was observed against E. coli and Staph. aureus (<0.1% viable cells in initial bacterial suspension). A dose-dependent fungistatic effect was observed against C. albicans. Finally, in test C discs and sterile buffer (600 microl) were introduced in a dialysis bag and dialysed against microbial inoculum. Reduced activity was found outside the dialysis bag, demonstrating that free ammonium was able to diffuse through the dialysis membrane, displaying antiseptic properties. CONCLUSIONS: The present protocol demonstrated that a quaternary ammonium compound remains efficient after heat polymerization with an acrylic denture base resin, both in immediate and distant microbial environments. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Such removable prosthetic devices with intrinsic antiseptic properties would contribute to improve the long-term management of denture stomatitis.  相似文献

Summary. A new acylated cyclopentapeptide namely, Cyclo-(N -dipicolinoyl)-bis-[L-Leu-DL-Nval]-L-Lys OMe (5) was suggested and synthesized. The structural conception of 5 was rationalized by analogy to the structural features of some known cyclodepsipeptides exemplified by the antibiotic and DNA intercalator actinomycin D (NSC: 3053), the ionophore and anti-HIV enniatin B (NSC: 692895) and the ionophore and antibiotic valinomycin (NSC: 630175).The cyclopeptide 5 was chemically synthesized, starting from its linear tetrapeptide ester precursor 2 by coupling L-lysine methyl ester to the prepared tetrapeptide acid 3 or hydrazide 4 via the mixed anhydride or azide method, respectively.A cytotoxic activity (cell killing) in both breast (NCF7) and CNS (SF-268) cell lines NCI, USA) was realized for 5, while less active cytotoxic profile was determined for 2.Moreover, we have recently reported general ionophoric and sensor characteristics particularly, for Pb (II) ions for both 5 and 2. Correlation between the cytotoxic activity and the ionophoric potency is a matter of future investigations.  相似文献
