This new approach highlights for the first time that all the gaits, symmetrical as well as asymmetrical, correspond to the succession of sequences that start by the movements of the two fore limbs, followed by the movements of the two hind limbs. Inside those sequences, the gaits are identified by the time lag between the movements of the two pairs and by the time lag between the movements of the two feet inside each pair. This approach, by breaking the stride paradigm, gives a new framework to locomotion analysis.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to characterize the large-scale geographical structures of microphytoplankton communities along French coasts. Once the temporal variability component shared by all sampled coastal sites was identified, and seasonal succession of microphytoplankton communities was described. A between-site analysis, using multiable comparison methods (STATIS), allowed the identification of three large areas according to the temporal variability patterns of microphytoplankton populations. The results indicate that the hydrodynamic characteristics of the different areas play a major role in the geographical structure of microalgal populations in mainland French coastal waters.  相似文献

The folding process of a set of 42 proteins, representative of the various folds, has been simulated by means of a Monte Carlo method on a discrete lattice, using two different potentials of mean force. Multiple compact fragments of contiguous residues are formed in the simulation, stable in composition, but not in geometry. During time, the number of fragments decreases until one final compact globular state is reached. We focused on the early steps of the folding in order to evidence the maximum number of fragments, provided they are sufficiently stable in sequence. A correlation has been established between these proto fragments and regular secondary-structure elements, whatever their nature, alpha helices or beta strands. Quantitatively, this is revealed by an overall mean one-residue quality factor of nearly 60%, which is better for proteins mainly composed of alpha helices. The correspondence between the number of fragments and the number of secondary-structure elements is of 77% and the regions separating successive fragments are mainly located in loops. Besides, hydrophobic clusters deduced from HCA correspond to fragments with an equivalent accuracy. These results suggest that folding pathways do not contain structurally static intermediate. However, since the beginning of folding, most residues that will later form one given secondary structure are kept close in space by being involved in the same fragment. This aggregation may be a way to accelerate the formation of the native state and enforces the key role played by hydrophobic residues in the formation of the fragments, thus in the folding process itself.  相似文献

The pollen analysis of a sediment core from a peat bog (Rifugio Mondovi) at the mountain belt (1760 m) in the Ellero Valley (Italian Maritime Alps) shows the postglacial vegetation history. The sequence starts at 12,000 BP during a peak of pine pollen; this first phase shows a low representation of birch and the presence of Tilia. Younger Dryas is characterised by increasing percentages of Artemisia, showing the presence of deciduous Quercus, fir and beech. Elm appears at the beginning of the Holocene during the second pine peak (9800 BP). A 3000-year hiatus is present. Sedimentation resumes at 6000 BP in a Rhododendron fir-wood. The present timberline at 1500 m, at the limit of the beech wood, is a result of the decline of the fir-wood at 2600 BP, which allowed an expansion of beech. During this period, there was a continual increase in Gramineae and deciduous oak and the first occurrences of evergreen oak are observed. The development of larch occurs at 1800 BP, together with walnut, chestnut, cereals and vine.  相似文献

Biotechnology is often presented as if progress in the past two decades represented a major success, but the reality is quite different. For example, ten major classes of antibiotics were discovered between 1935 and 1963, but after 1963 there has been just one, the oxazolidones. To illustrate the possibilities of doing better by taking account of the real behaviour of metabolic systems, we can examine how one might modify the activity of an enzyme in the cell (for example by genetic manipulation, or by the action of an inhibitor, etc.) to satisfy a technological aim. For example, if the objective is to eliminate a pest, one might suppose that the effect of an inhibitor could be to depress an essential flux to a level insufficient for life, or to raise the concentration of an intermediate to a toxic level. The former may seem the more obvious, but the latter is easier to achieve in practice, and there are some excellent examples of industrial products that work in that way, such as the herbicide 'Roundup' and antimalarials of the quinine class. A study of glycolysis in the parasite Trypanosoma brucei (which causes African sleeping sickness) indicates that for this approach to work the selected target enzyme must have a substrate with a concentration that is not limited by stoichiometric constraints. That is not necessarily easy to find in a complicated system, and typically needs the metabolic network to be analysed in the computer.  相似文献

Among abiotic molecules available in primitive environments, free amino acids are good candidates as the first source of energy and molecules for early protocells. Amino acid catabolic pathways are likely to be one of the very first metabolic pathways of life. Among them, which ones were the first to emerge? A cladistic analysis of catabolic pathways of the sixteen aliphatic amino acids and two portions of the Krebs cycle is performed using four criteria of homology. The cladogram shows that the earliest pathways to emerge are not portions of the Krebs cycle but catabolisms of aspartate, asparagine, glutamate, glutamine, proline, arginine. Earliest enzymatic catabolic functions were deaminations and transaminations. Later on appeared enzymatic decarboxylations. The consensus tree allows to propose four time spans for catabolism development and corroborates the views of Cordón in 1990 about the evolution of catabolism.  相似文献

As discussed in the preceding article [1] hierarchical analysis of DNA sequences should make it possible to treat complex unfolding (and refolding) processes involving both equilibrium and non-equilibrium subtransitions. Hence a variety of actual experimental situations may be analyzed. This is demonstrated with the help of a 1950 bp yeast mitochondrial DNA sequence encompassing part of the 21S ribosomal RNA gene: excellent fit of complex denaturation and renaturation profiles is achieved with only two adjustable parameters. The advantage of dealing with objectively defined stability units is also apparent when stability profiles are compared to known functional maps: striking correlations may be brought out and their possible significance is briefly discussed.  相似文献
