The chances for sympatric speciation are improved if ecological divergence leads to assortative mating as a by-product. This effect is known in parasites that find mates using host cues, but studies of larch- and pine-feeding races of the larch budmoth (Zeiraphera diniana, Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) suggest it may also occur when mate attraction is via sex pheromones that are independent of habitat. We have previously shown that females releasing pheromones on or near their own host attract more males of their own race than if placed on the alternative host. This host effect would enhance assortative mating provided adults preferentially alight on their native hosts. Here we investigate alighting preferences in natural mixed forest using a novel likelihood analysis of genotypic clusters based on three semidiagnostic allozyme loci. Both larch and pine females show a realized alighting preference for their own host of 86%. The equivalent preferences of males were 79% for the larch race and 85% for the pine race. These preferences are also detectable in small-scale laboratory experiments, where alighting preferences of larch and pine races towards their own hosts were, respectively, 67 and 66% in females and 69 and 63% in males. Pure larch race moths reared in the laboratory had alighting choice similar to moths from natural populations, while hybrids were intermediate, showing that alighting preferences were heritable and approximately additive. The field estimates of alighting preference, coupled with earlier work on mate choice, yield an estimated rate of natural hybridization between sympatric host races of 2.2-3.8% per generation. Divergent alighting choice enhances pheromone-mediated assortative mating today, and is likely to have been an important cause of assortative mating during initial divergence in host use. Because resources are normally 'coarse-grained' in space and time, assortative mating due to ecological divergence may be a more important catalyst of sympatric speciation than generally realized.  相似文献

Hybridization has long been considered a process that prevents divergence between species. In contrast to this historical view, an increasing number of empirical studies claim to show evidence for hybrid speciation without a ploidy change. However, the importance of hybridization as a route to speciation is poorly understood, and many claims have been made with insufficient evidence that hybridization played a role in the speciation process. We propose criteria to determine the strength of evidence for homoploid hybrid speciation. Based on an evaluation of the literature using this framework, we conclude that although hybridization appears to be common, evidence for an important role of hybridization in homoploid speciation is more circumscribed.  相似文献

Manganese (Mn) is an essential nutrient that can be toxic in excess concentrations, especially during early development stages. The mechanisms of Mn toxicity is still unclear, and little information is available regarding the role of Mn speciation and fractionation in toxicology. We aimed to investigate the toxic effects of several chemical forms of Mn in embryos of Danio rerio exposed during different development stages, between 2 and 122 h post fertilization. We found a stage-specific increase of lethality associated with hatching and removal of the chorion. Mn(II), ([Mn(H2O)6]2+) appeared to be the most toxic species to embryos exposed for 48 h, and Mn(II) citrate was most toxic to embryos exposed for 72 and/or 120 h. Manganese toxicity was associated with calcium disruption, manganese speciation and metal fractionation, including bioaccumulation in tissue, granule fractions, organelles and denaturated proteins.  相似文献

Autogamous species are usually distinguishable from xenogamous relatives by smaller flowers, fewer or even no floral rewards and lower pollen–ovule (P/O) ratios. Many Rhipsalis spp. are small flowered, selfing and include the most widespread species in Cactaceae. However, Rhipsalis also includes a large number of narrowly endemic species and is most diverse in the Atlantic rainforests of Brazil. To investigate the evolution of floral function and the correlation between floral function and range size, we analysed display size, floral reward and P/O ratios of Rhipsalis and its closest relatives, reconstructed ancestral traits and related these patterns to the distributions and range sizes of the species. Display size and sugar amount are reduced in subgenera Goniorhipsalis and Rhipsalis and secondarily increased in Phyllarthrorhipsalis, whereas the P/O ratio is decreased in subgenera Rhipsalis and Phyllarthrorhipsalis. We interpret this pattern as a switch from a predominantly xenogamous to an autogamous reproductive system, followed by a return to a predominantly xenogamous system. None of the floral parameters shows significant correlations with range size, except for display size. Nevertheless, those species with the smallest flowers, lowest sugar amounts per flower and lowest P/O ratios occur either outside southeastern Brazil and/or have comparatively large distribution ranges. Almost all Rhipsalis spp. occurring outside the Atlantic rainforests are restricted to the clade formed by subgenera Rhipsalis and Phyllarthrorhipsalis. Thus, we believe that the evolution of an autogamous reproduction system enabled this lineage of Rhipsalis to diversify and spread in the Atlantic rainforests, in the rest of the Neotropics and even spread to the Old World, where it is the only member of the family.  相似文献

Abstract Both chromosomal rearrangements and negative interactions among loci (Dobzhansky‐Muller incompatibilities) have been advanced as the genetic mechanism underlying the sterility of interspecific hybrids. These alternatives invoke very different evolutionary histories during speciation and also predict different patterns of sterility in artificial hybrids. Chromosomal rearrangements require drift, inbreeding, or other special conditions for initial fixation and, because heterozygosity per se generates any problems with gamete formation, F1 hybrids will be most infertile. In contrast, Dobzhansky‐Muller incompatibilities may arise as byproducts of adaptive evolution and often affect the segregating F2 generation most severely. To distinguish the effects of these two mechanisms early in divergence, we investigated the quantitative genetics of hybrid sterility in a line cross between two members of the Mimulus guttatus species complex (M. guttatus and M. nasutus). Hybrids showed partial male and female sterility, and the patterns of infertility were not consistent with the action of chromosomal rearrangements alone. F2 and F1 hybrids exhibited equal decreases in pollen viability (> 40%) relative to the highly fertile parental lines. A large excess of completely pollen‐sterile F2 genotypes also pointed to the segregation of Dobzhansky‐Muller incompatibility factors affecting male fertility. Female fertility showed a pattern similarly consistent with epistatic interactions: F2 hybrids produced far fewer seeds per flower than F1 hybrids (88.0 ± 2.8 vs. 162.9 ± 8.5 SE, respectively) and either parental line, and many F2 genotypes were completely female sterile. Dobzhansky‐Muller interactions also resulted in the breakdown of several nonreproductive characters and appear to contribute to correlations between male and female fertility in the F2 generation. These results parallel and contrast with the genetics of postzygotic isolation in model animal systems and are a first step toward understanding the process of speciation in this well‐studied group of flowering plants.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The ecological circumstances that precipitate speciation remain poorly understood. Here, a community of Heliconius butterflies in lowland Panama was studied to investigate patterns of pollen use, and more specifically the ecological changes associated with the recent divergence of Heliconius melpomene (Linnaeus) and H. cydno (Doubleday).
2. Considering the seven commonest Heliconius species in the community, 32 types of pollen or spore were encountered in pollen loads but only five pollen species were common. Systematic exploitation of pollen was therefore confined to a small proportion of the flowers visited.
3. Most of the variation in pollen load composition between individuals was explained by differences in collecting locality. The exception was Psiguria , which was used in all habitats by the melpomene / hecale clade far more than by the erato / sapho clade. This may suggest an ancestral switch within Heliconius towards increased reliance on Psiguria pollen.
4. Heliconius cydno and H. melpomene differed significantly in pollen load composition for three of the five most commonly collected pollen species. This is most probably explained by differences in habitat preference; H. melpomene and its co-mimic H. erato are found in open habitat while H. cydno and its co-mimic H. sapho are found in closed-canopy forest.
5. As melpomene and cydno are known to hybridise occasionally, such differences in adult microhabitat contribute to pre-mating isolation. Habitat divergence between H. cydno and H. melpomene , which is associated with changes in mimicry, must have played a role in their recent speciation.  相似文献

Ecological speciation studies have more thoroughly addressed premating than postmating reproductive isolation. This study examines multiple postmating barriers between host forms of Neochlamisus bebbianae leaf beetles that specialize on Acer and Salix trees. We demonstrate cryptic isolation and reduced hybrid fitness via controlled matings of these host forms. These findings reveal host-associated postmating isolation, although a nonecological, 'intrinsic' basis for these patterns cannot be ruled out. Host preference and performance results among cross types further suggest sex-linked maternal effects on these traits, whereas family effects indicate their genetic basis and associated variation. Genes of major effect appear to influence these traits. Together with previous findings of premating isolation and adaptive differentiation in sympatry, our results meet many assumptions of 'speciation with gene flow' models. Here, such gene flow is likely asymmetric, with consequences for the dynamics of future ecological divergence and potential ecological speciation of these host forms.  相似文献

Gilia achilleifolia is a putative diploid hybrid species. Hybrid origin was hypothesized based on traditional biosystematicevidence (i.e., morphological, cytological, and crossability data),which may be insufficient to establish genealogical history. Here,phylogenetic analysis of sequence data from the internal transcribedspacer (ITS) regions is used to examine the relationship between theputative hybrid species and its proposed parents. Isozyme variation isassayed to test for genetic additivity in the putative hybrid taxon andmorphological data are analyzed cladistically to evaluate the charactersthat led to the original hypothesis of hybrid origin. The ITS-basedgene tree placed G. achilleifolia in two divergent clades, eachsister to one of the putative parental lineages. Little isozymeadditivity was observed and G. achilleifolia possessed sixunique alleles among 42 alleles observed. However, ITS and isozymetrees differed in their placement of the two lineages of G.achilleifolia; both lineages are closer to a third putative parentin the isozyme tree. Also, G. achilleifolia is intermediate orpolymorphic for all nine morphological characteristics differentiatingthe parental species. Sorting of ancestral polymorphisms cannot easilyaccount for expression patterns of seven of these characters. In ourview, these results fail to distinguish between alternative hypothesesof ancient hybrid origin and divergent evolution, belying the difficultyof detecting ancient hybrids.  相似文献

All known populations of koa-finches, genus Rhodacanthis , became extinct in the Holocene epoch. Two new species are described here from Quaternary fossil sites in the Hawaiian Islands. One new species, from Kauai and Maui, is roughly the size of the historically known greater koa-finch ( R. palmeri ) but differs in having a more robust skull and in bill morphology. The second new species, from Oahu and Maui, is similar in size to the lesser koa-finch ( R. flaviceps ) but closer to R. palmeri in qualitative osteological traits. The two species of koa-finches known historically from the island of Hawaii are distinct in osteology from the fossil koa-finches on the older Hawaiian islands, indicating that at least two of the four known speciation events in the genus took place within approximately the past 500 kyr. However, the similarity of maxillae from Pleistocene and Holocene sites on Oahu suggests that the Oahu population maintained morphological stasis through the climate changes of the late Quaternary. The evidence that speciation occurred on the youngest island in the archipelago suggests that the process of community assembly on newly emergent Hawaiian landscapes was a stimulus to evolutionary diversification in Rhodacanthis .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 144 , 527–541.  相似文献
