Bed segregation in a fluidized bed bioreactor profoundly influenced biofilm thickness and microbial activities of the biofilm along the bed height. Bioparticles coated with a thin biofilm, observed at the bottom of the reactor, had a higher specific activity in propylene glycol and n-propanol degradation than in thick biofilms developed at the top of the reactor. Although no significant difference was observed in specific activity for propionate and acetate along the reactor flow axis, more total propionate and acetate conversion occurred in regions of thicker biofilm accumulation. 相似文献

Anaerobically digested stillage (ADS) requires treatment before being discharged into water bodies or soils to avoid adverse effects. Phytofiltration systems are eco-friendly technologies for wastewater treatment, and they simultaneously serve as a source of biomass for biofuel production. The aim of the present study was to investigate the phytofiltration of ADS using Azolla sp. The effects of the ADS strength (dilutions 1:?50 and 1?:?25 v/v) and initial biomass density (IBD) [15.44 (IBD1) and 23.16 (IBD2) g dry weight (dw) m?2] on plant growth and pollutant removal were assessed. Productivities obtained at ADS 1:?50 (2.93 and 3.04 g m?2 d?1 for IBD1 and IBD2, respectively) were not significantly different from those of a synthetic medium (2.56 and 3.15 g m?2 for IBD1 and IBD2, respectively). Higher organic matter removal was found using ADS at 1:?25 than that obtained using ADS 1:?50 (52.16–53.34 vs 32.29–38.16%), while no IBD effect was observed. The nutrient concentrations in ADS were reduced significantly, especially the concentrations of NH4-N (75.11–82.54%), PO4-P (88.72–92.90%) and SO4-S (55.95–66.61%). The conversion of nutrients from ADS into Azolla biomass may result in an effective way to produce an attractive feedstock for biofuel production. 相似文献

An accepted measure of anaerobic capacity is the maximal O2 deficit. But it is not feasible to use O2 deficit if > or =10 submaximal runs are needed to extrapolate the O2 demand of high velocity running (Medb? et al. 1988). Recently, an alternative method to determine O2 deficit was proposed (Hill 1996) using only results of supramaximal cycle ergometer tests. The purpose of this study was to evaluate this alternative method with data from treadmill tests. Twenty-six runners ran at 95%, 100%, 105%, and 110% of their velocity at VO2max. Times to exhaustion, velocity, and accumulated oxygen uptake (VO2) from each individual's four tests were fit to the following equation using iterative nonlinear regression: accumulated VO2 = (O2 demand x velocity x time)-O2 deficit. The mean value s derived for O2 demand and O2 deficit were 0.198+/-0.031 ml x kg(-1) x m(-1) and 42+/-22 ml x kg(-1). SEE for the parameters were 0.007+/-0.007 ml x kg(-1) x m(-1) and 8+/-10 ml x kg(-1), respectively. Mean R2 was 0.998+/-0.003. 1. Studies of hyporheic microbial ecology have suggested an important role for hyporheic microbial processes in stream ecosystem functioning. Using evidence from microbial communities in other aquatic habitats, some predictions are made concerning the diversity of microbial types and microbial processes likely to occur in the hyporheic zone, and the relative importance of these various types to the hyporheic ecosystem. 2. It is predicted that the biofilm growth form of interstitial micro-organisms will create a variety of microniches, allowing coexistence of a great diversity of microbial types, and promoting the activity of some otherwise poor competitors. It is further predicted that the confluence of reduced groundwaters and aerobic surface waters will favour chemolithotrophic processes in the hyporheic zone, but that these will contribute significantly to hyporheic production only if surface water is very low in dissolved organic carbon, or the groundwater is extremely reduced, such as by the influence of riparian wetlands. A variety of anaerobic respiratory pathways, such as nitrate, ferric ion, sulphate and even methanogenic respiration will be employed in the hyporheic zone, with biofilm dynamics permitting these to occur even in aerobic sediments. Anaerobic pathways may account for a significant proportion of total hyporheic organic matter mineralization. 3. The role of fungi in hyporheic dynamics is, as yet, almost completely unstudied. However, it is expected that they will be important in breaking down buried particulate organic matter (POM), which may account for a large proportion of total stream POM. 4. Physicochemical conditions in hyporheic sediments appear to be highly heterogeneous, and this heterogeneity may be very important in the cycling of certain nutrients, especially nitrogen, which involves a series of steps requiring different conditions. 5. Various new techniques are now available by which biofilm dynamics and in situ microbial processes may be measured. Studies are recommended of intact microbial communities both at the microscale of the biofilm and at the scale of the heterogeneities occurring in hyporheic sediments.
