Few studies have examined the effects of clonal integration (translocation of resources between interconnected ramets) during the expansion of amphibious clonal plants from terrestrial to aquatic habitats. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to simulate the expansion of plants from terrestrial to contaminated aquatic habitats in the amphibious stoloniferous herb Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed). The proximal ramets (i.e. relatively old) of clonal fragments grown in uncontaminated soils were connected to (allowing clonal integration) or disconnected from (preventing clonal integration) distal ramets (i.e. relatively young) grown either in uncontaminated water (control, no CuSO4) or in four copper‐contaminated water treatments containing 31.25, 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/L CuSO4, respectively. When a stolon connection was severed, all distal ramets grown in the contaminated water died. When the stolon connection was intact, however, the survival rate of the distal ramets was 85–100% when they were grown at the three lower levels of contamination and 43.75% at the highest level. Moreover, the survival rate and growth of the distal ramets grown in the three lower levels of contamination treatments did not differ from those in the control (uncontaminated water). These results suggest that clonal integration could greatly improve the survival and growth of alligator weed subjected to moderate levels of copper stress. Although clonal integration could also increase the survival rate of the connected distal ramets subjected to the highest level of copper stress (250 mg/L CuSO4) compared with that of disconnected distal ramets, the survival rate and growth measures were still significantly lower than those in the control. This suggests that clonal integration plays a limited role in the survival and growth of alligator weed when it is subjected to severe stress by high levels of copper contamination.  相似文献

In fish, vision may be impaired when eye tissue is in direct contact with environmental conditions that limit aerobic ATP production. We hypothesized that the visual acuity of fishes exposed to hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-rich water would be altered owing to changes in cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity. Using the H2S-tolerant mangrove rivulus (Kryptolebias marmoratus), we showed that a 10 min exposure to greater than or equal to 200 µM of H2S impaired visual acuity and COX activity in the eye. Visual acuity and COX activity were restored in fish allowed to recover in H2S-free water for up to 1 h. Since K. marmoratus are found in mangrove pools with H2S concentrations exceeding 1000 µM, visual impairment may impact predator avoidance, navigation and foraging behaviour in the wild.  相似文献

为生产各种食用品、化妆品、医药药品等色素新产品提供重要原料,研究榕树叶红色素的提取条件和稳定性。以水作提取剂,在室温下浸提24h,用紫外分析法研究色素的稳定性。色素在330am有最大吸收峰,该色素水溶性较好,pH值对色素的稳定性影响较大,但热稳定性良好。苯甲酸钠、柠檬酸、醋酸、蔗糖及葡萄糖等食品添加剂对色素无明显影响,淀粉对其影响较大,耐光性较差。氧化剂、还原剂中除抗坏血酸对色素的影响明显外,其他均无明显影响,金属离子对其影响较小。  相似文献

Galaxias ‘nebula’, a small fish which has adaptations for air‐breathing but is not known to be amphibious, voluntarily emerged from water and, in an unfamiliar environment, moved preferentially towards an alternative water source. Nebula may thus be considered one of the few truly amphibious fishes, and their ability to detect water provides a selective advantage which aids their survival in unpredictable natural environments.  相似文献

研究了两栖榕在潜流型人工湿地的生长特性及其对污水的净化效果。一年多的实验表明,生长在人工湿地的两栖榕具有发达的侧根和不定根,保持正常的净光合速率,蒸腾速率,根系活力生长速率。两栖榕人工湿地对TN,TP,CODCr和BOD5的去除率分别为54.2%、40.9%、72.4%和74.3%,与无植物系统相比较,去除率分别提高了17%、12%、10%和11%,此外,两栖榕人工湿地系统中,水力停留时间对去除率果有一定影响。  相似文献

Robots play an important role in underwater monitoring and recovery operations, such as pollution detection, submarine sampling and data collection, video mapping, and object recovery in dangerous places. However, regular-sized robots may not be suitable for applications in some restricted underwater environments. Accordingly, in previous research we designed several novel types of bio-inspired microrobots using Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) ac- tuators. These microrobots possess some attributes of compact structure, multi-functionality, flexibility, and precise positioning. However, they lack the attributes of long endurance, stable high speed, and large load capacity necessary for real-world appli- cations. To overcome these disadvantages, we proposed a mother-son robot system, composed of several microrobots as sons and a newly designed amphibious spherical robot as the mother. Inspired by amphibious turtles, the mother robot was designed with a spherical body and four legs with two Degrees of Freedom (DOF). It is actuated by four vectored water-jet propellers and ten servomotors, and it is capable of walking on land and cruising underwater. We analysed the mother robot's walking and underwater cruising mechanisms, constructed a prototype, and carried out a series of experiments to evaluate its amphibious motions. Good motion performance was observed in the experiments.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to determine which sensory cues the mangrove rivulus Kryptolebias marmoratus, a quasi-amphibious, hermaphroditic fish, uses to orient in an unfamiliar terrestrial environment. In a laboratory setting, K. marmoratus were placed on a terrestrial test arena and were provided the opportunity to move toward reflective surfaces, water, dark colours v. light colours, and orange colouration. Compared with hermaphrodites, males moved more often toward an orange section of the test arena, suggesting that the response may be associated with camouflage or male–male competition, since only males display orange colouration. Younger individuals also moved more often toward the orange quadrant than older individuals, suggesting age-dependent orientation performance or behaviour. Sloped terrain also had a significant effect on orientation, with more movement downhill, suggesting the importance of the otolith-vestibular system in terrestrial orientation of K. marmoratus. By understanding the orientation of extant amphibious fishes, we may be able to infer how sensory biology and behaviour might have evolved to facilitate invasion of land by amphibious vertebrates millions of years ago.  相似文献

Eleocharis vivipara, a unique leafless amphibious sedge, adopts the C4 mode of photosynthesis under terrestrial conditions and the C3 mode under submerged aquatic conditions. To analyze the molecular basis of these responses to the contrasting environments, we isolated and characterized two full-length cDNAs for a key C4 enzyme, pyruvate, orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK; EC 2.7.9.1). The isogenes for PPDK, designated ppdk1 and ppdk2, were highly homologous to one another but not identical. The PPDK1 protein, deduced from the nucleotide sequence of the cDNA, contained an extra domain at the amino terminus which, presumably, serves as a chloroplast transit peptide, while PPDK2 lacked this extra domain. It seems likely, therefore, that the ppdk1 and ppdk2 genes encode a chloroplastic and a cytosolic PPDK, respectively. Genomic Southern blot analysis revealed the existence of a small family of genes for PPDK in the genome of E. vivipara. Northern blot analysis indicate that both chloroplastic and cytosolic genes for PPDK are expressed simultaneously in the culms, a photosynthetic organ, of E. vivipara and that the pattern of expression of these genes differs between the growth forms.  相似文献
