The feeding behaviour of the freshwater piscivore, Clarias gariepinus (C. lazera) (C & V 1840) was studied over two periods: 1973–1975 and 1981–1982, in Lake Kinneret (Israel). The total number of fish analysed was 264 and their sizes (SL) and weights varied between 238 and 830 mm (146 to 5728 g). More than fifty species of plants and animals from the plankton, benthos and nekton of Lake Kinneret were identified in the intestines of C. gariepinus. Preyed fish were the most abundant food component (81%) and constituted the highest biomass, with Mirogrex terraesanctae representing the majority (although other species were also found). The potential impact of piscivory in the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

Summary Brush border membrane vesicles were prepared from mussel gills using differential and sucrose density gradient centrifugation. These vesicles contained both the maximal Na+-dependent alanine transport activity found in the gradient and the maximal activities of -glutamyl transpeptidase and alkaline phosphatase. Electron micrographs showed closed vesicles of approximately 0.1–0.5 m diameter. Transport experiments using these vesicles demonstrated a transient 18-fold overshoot in intravesicular alanine concentration in the presence of an inwardly directed Na+ gradient, but not under Na+ equilibrium conditions. A reduced overshoot (10-fold) was seen with an inwardly directed K+ gradient. Further studies revealed a broad cation selectivity, with preference for Na+, which was characteristic of alanine transport but not glucose transport in these membranes. The apparent amino acid specificity of the uptake pathway(s) was similar to that of intact gills and supported the idea of at least four separate pathways for amino acid transport in mussel gill brush border membranes. The apparent Michaelis constant for alanine uptake was approximately 7m, consistent with values forK t determined with intact tissue.  相似文献

Summary Calcium carbonate labeled with carbon-14 was self-irradiated by means of the -decay of its carbon-14. A number of products containing one or two carbon atoms were identified by high performance liquid chromatography. Formic and oxalic acids were produced in relatively high yields, while glyoxylic, glycolic, and acetic acids, as well as formaldehyde and methanol, were formed in lower yields. These results support the suggestion that carbonates subjected to ionizing radiation could have been a source of carbon for organic synthesis on the primitive earth.  相似文献

Summary We have made pairwise comparisons between the coding sequences of 21 genes from coldblooded vertebrates and 41 homologous sequences from warm-blooded vertebrates. In the case of 12 genes, GC levels were higher, especially in third codon positions, in warm-blooded vertebrates compared to cold-blooded vertebrates. Six genes showed no remarkable difference in GC level and three showed a lower level. In the first case, higher GC levels appear to be due to a directional fixation of mutations, presumably under the influence of body temperature (see Bernardi and Bernardi 1986b). These GC-richer genes of warm-blooded vertebrates were located, in all cases studied, in isochores higher in GC than those comprising the homologous genes of cold-blooded vertebrates. In the third case, increases appear to be due to a limited formation of GC-rich isochores which took place in some cold-blooded vertebrates after the divergence of warm-blooded vertebrates. The directional changes in the GC content of coding sequences and the evolutionary conservation of both increased and unchanged GC levels are in keeping with the existence of compositional constraints on the genome.  相似文献

Summary It is proposed that nucleotide strands of opposite handedness may strongly associate and thereby provide the key step of a mechanism for the amplification of a small enantiomeric excess in an initially near-racemic mixture of poly- or oligonucleotides. This hypothesis, if confirmed by experimentation, may have important implications for the question of the origin of biomolecular chirality. The results of preliminary NMR experiments are given, which do show evidence of a strong association between pentanucleotide RNA strands whose monomers have opposite chirality. Simple kinetic equations are solved to demonstrate the conditions under which such association can produce amplification of chirality.  相似文献

The content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase, and the concentration of reduced glutathione were measured in cerebral microvessels isolated from rat brain. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly arachidonic, linoleic, and docosahexaenoic acids, accounted for 32% of total fatty acids in cerebral microvessels. Whereas total SOD activity in the microvessels was slightly lower than that found in cerebrum and cerebellum, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities were twice as high and catalase activity was four times higher. Glutathione peroxidase in microvessels is active on both hydrogen peroxide and cumen hydroperoxide, and it is strongly inhibited by mercaptosuccinate. After several hours of preparation, the concentration of reduced glutathione in isolated microvessels was 0.7 mumol/mg of protein, which corresponds to a concentration of approximately 3.5 mM. Our results indicate that the blood-brain barrier contains large amounts of peroxide-detoxifying enzymes, which may act, in vivo, to protect its highly polyunsaturated membranes against oxidative alterations.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to determine whether the excitotoxic cholinesterase inhibitor soman increases the catabolism of phospholipids in rat brain. Injections of soman (70 micrograms/kg, s.c.), at a dose that produced toxic effects, increased the levels of both free fatty acids (175-250% of control) and free choline (250% of control) in rat cerebrum 1 h after administration. All fatty acids contained in brain phosphatidylcholine were elevated significantly including palmitic (16:0), stearic (18:0), oleic (18:1), arachidonic (20:4), and docosahexaenoic (22:6) acids. The changes observed were consistent with those reported to occur following ischemia and the administration of other convulsants. Pretreatment of rats with the anticonvulsant diazepam (4 mg/kg, i.p.) prevented both the signs of soman toxicity and the soman-induced increase of choline and free fatty acids. Diazepam alone did not affect the levels of choline or free fatty acids, cholinesterase activity, or soman-induced cholinesterase inhibition, suggesting that soman toxicity involves a convulsant-mediated increase in phosphatidylcholine catabolism. In addition, administration of the convulsant bicuculline, at a dose that produces seizures and increases the levels of free fatty acids in brain, significantly increased the levels of choline. Results suggest that excitotoxic events enhance the hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine in brain as evidenced by a concomitant increase in the levels of choline and free fatty acids.  相似文献

Pretreatment of rats with the excitatory amino acid antagonist 2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoic acid (2-APH; 0.5 mmol/kg, i.p.) protected against insulin-induced clonic seizures. Complete protection was observed in 38% of the rats and partial protection in an additional 50%. Lesioning of the corticostriatal pathway by frontal cortical ablation caused decreases in the striatal levels of aspartate (-28%) and glutamate (-18%), an increase in striatal glutamine level (45%), and decreased high-affinity uptake of D-[3H]aspartate (-27%) in the lesioned dorsal neostriatum. Insulin-induced hypoglycemia caused a predicted sharp increase in aspartate level (165%) and decreased glutamate (-20%) and glutamine (-38%) levels in the intact striatum. Pretreatment of rats with 2-APH significantly reversed the insulin-induced changes in striatal aspartate, glutamate, and glutamine levels, especially in the intact hemisphere. In normoglycemic control rats, the "metabolic," i.e., concentration in the lesioned hemisphere, aspartate pool constituted 72% and the "synaptic," i.e., the concentration difference between the intact and lesioned hemispheres, 28% of the total striatal aspartate pool. 2-APH had no effect on the level of "metabolic" aspartate in the striata of normoglycemic rats but caused an almost complete suppression of "synaptic" aspartate. Following insulin-induced hypoglycemia, the "metabolic" aspartate pool doubled, whereas the "synaptic" aspartate pool increased 3.5-fold in the absence of 2-APH. Mexican-American children are shorter but relatively heavier than non-Hispanic whites and blacks. The objectives of this paper are to assess the extent to which this "short and plump" physique occurs in data collected in two national surveys (HANES I and II); to determine variations by age, sex, and socioeconomic status; and to investigate the anthropometric characteristics that may account for the overweight. Three groups, defined on the basis of reported ancestry and observed race, are studied: Mexican-Americans (MEXAME), non-Hispanic Whites, (EURAME), and blacks (BLACK). Short stature was clearly associated with the poverty index (PI) in all three groups. MEXAMEs with a PI greater than 1.6 were similar in stature to EURAMEs at the same income level at ages 1-11 years but not at 12-17 years. On the other hand, MEXAMEs were shorter than BLACKs at all ages and income levels. The body mass index (kg/cm2) and poverty were unrelated. With respect to the anthropometric characteristics examined that are related to the body mass index, MEXAMEs and EURAMEs were similar in sitting height as a proportion of total height, arm muscle and fat areas, and triceps skinfold but different in the following ways: MEXAMEs had narrower elbow but broader bitrochanteric breadths and larger chest circumferences and subscapular skinfolds. Greater upper body dimensions and fatfolds seem to best describe the physique of MEXAMEs. However, in multiple regressions, these anthropometric characteristics failed to account fully for the greater relative weight of MEXAMEs as compared to EURAMEs.  相似文献
