The distribution of morphological structures was studied in wings of the banded agrion (Calopteryx splendens Harr.) from different intrapopulation groups. Dragon flies of odd years of emergence are characterized by a more stable pattern of ontogenetic processes according to the mean total number of venation defects. The sharply increased level of radiation in summer 1986, which coincided with the flight of dragon-flies, could have caused hereditary defects expressed in a sequence of generations of even years of emergence. Apparently, most alternative features of wing venation in dragon-flies can be considered as markers of stability of the ontogenetic processes, which reflect, to a great extent, genotypic features of the organisms in a population. A possible mechanism has been described, which explains the proposed topological model of formation of the venation defects of different types. The increase in mean frequencies of defects can suggest an enhanced development over the aberrant epigenetic trajectories, which may lead to the elimination of these organisms under the influence of various agents, i.e., to the stabilizing selection in a population. The results obtained suggest that defects of venation arise on the stochastic basis and their frequency increases upon destabilization of ontogenetic processes not only by the environmental factors, but also by genetic stress. The trophic status of the eastern Gulf of Finland, where the largest Baltic metropolis St. Petersburg sits at the mouth of
the largest Baltic river Neva, is elevated but existing recommendations on water protection measures are controversial. In
this study, the effects of nutrient load reductions on this ecosystem were estimated with the aid of a three-dimensional coupled
hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model. As a reference, the contemporary seasonal dynamics were simulated with nutrient inputs
corresponding to the recent estimates of point and riverine sources. In order to eliminate the effects of natural inter-annual
variations, the computations were run under recurrent annual forcing for 3 years, until quasi steady-state seasonal dynamics
were reached. Reasonable comparability of simulated concentrations and biogeochemical fluxes to available field estimates
provides credibility to scenario simulations. These simulations show that substantial reductions of nutrient point sources
in St. Petersburg would affect only the Neva Bay as the immediate receptor of treated sewage waters, where primary production
could decrease by up to 20%. Eutrophication in the other parts of the Neva Estuary and in the entire eastern Gulf of Finland
would change insignificantly owing to increased nutrient import from the offshore waters. Therefore, more significant changes
can occur only via a reduction in nutrient pools in the open Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Proper, which would require a
longer time.

In previous studies, we have investigated the strength of self-incompatibility (SI) in Solanum carolinense, a highly successful weed with a fully functional SI system that inhabits early successional and other disturbed habitats.
We have found that the SI response in S. carolinense is a plastic trait—its strength being affected by the age of the flowers, and the presence of developing fruits and that
there are genetic differences among families in their self-fertility. However, in species with a fully functional SI response,
selfing would not be that common. As a result, deleterious recessives scattered though the genome of horsenettle are only
occasionally exposed to selection. It has been suggested that deleterious recessives accumulate near S-alleles in strong SI species because the S-locus is located in a non-recombining region of the genome and because strong S-alleles are never in the homozygous state, thus sheltering some of the genetic load near the S-locus from selection. We performed a series of laboratory and greenhouse experiments to determine the extent to which sheltered
load adds to the overall magnitude of inbreeding depression in horsenettle. Specifically, we amplified and sequenced the S-alleles from 16 genets collected from a large population in Pennsylvania and performed a series of controlled self-pollinations.
We then grew the selfed progeny in the greenhouse; recorded various measures of growth and reproductive output; and amplified
and sequenced their S-allele(s). We found that the heterozygous progeny of self-pollinations produce more flowers and have a greater ability to
set both self and cross seed than S-homozygous progeny. We also found evidence of variation in the magnitude of load among S-alleles. These results suggest that sheltered load might slow the fixation of weak (partially compatible) S-alleles in this population, thus adding to the maintenance of a mixed mating system rather than leading to the fixation of

Because nearly neutral substitutions are thought to contribute substantially to molecular evolution, and much of our insight about the workings of nearly neutral evolution relies on theory, solvable models of this process are of particular interest. Here, I present an analytical method for solving models of nearly neutral evolution at steady state. The steady state solution applies to any constant fitness landscape under a dynamic of successive fixations, each of which occurs on the background of the population's most recent common ancestor. Because this dynamic neglects the effects of polymorphism in the population beyond the mutant allele under consideration, the steady state solution provides a decent approximation of evolutionary dynamics when the population mutation rate is low (Nu<1). To demonstrate the method, I apply it to two examples: Fisher's geometric model (FGM), and a simple model of molecular evolution. Since recent papers have studied the steady state behavior of FGM under this dynamic, I analyze its behavior in detail and compare the results with previous work. 相似文献

Black scale Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) is a widespread olive pest in California and Europe. Metaphycus lounsburyi (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is often one of its main parasitoids. Augmentative releases of M. lounsburyi have been proposed in those areas in which biological control is ineffective. In this paper, we study the relationship between black scale and M. lounsburyi in the field. According to our data, M. lounsburyi parasitizes mainly ovipositing females of black scale. Parasitism rates of ovipositing females reach high levels. In those scales, M. lounsburyi develops as a gregarious parasitoid, with an average of 13 and a maximum of 40 parasitoids developing per scale. The secondary sex ratio is female biased (proportion of males = 0.13) and appears to be brood size dependent. Metaphycus lounsburyi eggs are encyrtiform; however, its egg load is much higher than other Metaphycus that also parasitize black scale. The implications of these results on the behavioral ecology of M. lounsburyi and its use in biological control of black scale are discussed. 相似文献

Many longitudinal studies of aging collect genetic information only for a sub-sample of participants of the study. These data also do not include recent findings, new ideas and methodological concepts developed by distinct groups of researchers. The formal statistical analyses of genetic data ignore this additional information and therefore cannot utilize the entire research potential of the data. In this paper, we present a stochastic model for studying such longitudinal data in joint analyses of genetic and non-genetic sub-samples. The model incorporates several major concepts of aging known to date and usually studied independently. These include age-specific physiological norms, allostasis and allostatic load, stochasticity, and decline in stress resistance and adaptive capacity with age. The approach allows for studying all these concepts in their mutual connection, even if respective mechanisms are not directly measured in data (which is typical for longitudinal data available to date). The model takes into account dependence of longitudinal indices and hazard rates on genetic markers and permits evaluation of all these characteristics for carriers of different alleles (genotypes) to address questions concerning genetic influence on aging-related characteristics. The method is based on extracting genetic information from the entire sample of longitudinal data consisting of genetic and non-genetic sub-samples. Thus it results in a substantial increase in the accuracy of statistical estimates of genetic parameters compared to methods that use only information from a genetic sub-sample. Such an increase is achieved without collecting additional genetic data. Simulation studies illustrate the increase in the accuracy in different scenarios for datasets structurally similar to the Framingham Heart Study. Possible applications of the model and its further generalizations are discussed. 相似文献
