The study described in this article presents the first‐ever physical supply and use tables (PSUTs) based on the recently published methodological standard for the System of Environmental‐Economic Accounting (SEEA). The tables were compiled for the Czech Republic for 2014. The compilation procedure followed was described in detail so that it can serve as a source of inspiration and a benchmark for other researchers and/or statisticians. The major shortcoming of the PSUTs is that not all needed data were readily available in physical units and required estimations based on proxies. Some parts of the tables are therefore burdened with a degree of uncertainty. In order to address the price inhomogeneity of sectoral prices for commodity outputs, imports, and exports, which tends to be typical for monetary supply and use tables (MSUTs), the PSUTs and MSUTs were further used for the calculation of raw material equivalents of import, exports, and raw material input (RMI) and raw material consumption (RMC) indicators. A comparison of results showed that the total indicators do not differ that much: the largest difference of 5% was recorded for raw material equivalents of exports, while RMC, for instance, remained nearly the same. However, we still argue for the use of PSUTs for the calculation of raw material equivalents, as changes in total volume of the indicators were accompanied with changes in their material structure. This can have significant consequences for the assessment of environmental impacts related to material consumption, as environmental impacts are very material specific. 相似文献

This study developed an artificial neural network (ANN) to estimate the growth of microorganisms during a fermentation process.
The ANN relies solely on the cumulative consumption of alkali and the buffer capacity, which were measured on-line from the
on/off control signal and pH values through automatic pH control. The two input variables were monitored on-line from a series
of different batch cultivations and used to train the ANN to estimate biomass. The ANN was refined by optimizing the network
structure and by adopting various algorithms for its training. The software estimator successfully generated growth profiles

There is increasing interest in the impacts of pulsed resource inputs (e.g., seasonal fluctuations in primary production)
on ecosystem properties. However, theoretical models have focused on the ecosystem role of consumers only in stable environments.
We investigated how the consumption rate affects ecosystem properties when resource supplies are pulsed using a simple model
with numerical simulations. We initially investigated how primary production responds to resource supply shortages under various
consumption rates and found that a vigorous consumer attenuates a rapid reduction in primary production. We next examined
ecosystem properties under pulsed resource supplies. Intermediate consumption enhances primary production. The consumption
rate that maximizes productivity differs for producers and consumers in a given resource supply environment, irrespective
of the pattern of pulsation. The enhancement of primary production and the maximization of secondary production occur simultaneously
in a stable environment but are not always the same when the resource supply is pulsed. We also investigated the variability
of primary production and found that intermediate consumption rates reduce its coefficient of variation. In addition, we found
that consumers with either very low or very high consumption rates are vulnerable to extinction when resource supplies are
pulsed. Therefore, consumers with intermediate consumption rates contribute not only to the enhancement and stabilization
of primary production but also to the stability of the consumer population itself. 相似文献

In the nutrition of browsing ruminants in captivity, adequate nutrient digestibility and energy content of diet is debated. Problems related to energy‐provision and low forage intake have been reported for the okapi and other browsers like the giraffe, particularly during winter. High‐fiber concentrates like unmolassed beet pulp have some potential to improve the nutritional management of these species. Using a total of six okapis in captivity, seven feeding trials were carried out at two facilities (A+B) on a structured but opportunistic base. Three trials (A1, A2, B1) were conducted when animals were fed their regular diet including grain based energy concentrates, fruits and vegetables, and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay. Two trials (A5, B2) examined the effect of unmolassed beet pulp, and two (A3,4) examined the effect of unmolassed beet pulp+fresh browse. Daily intake and feces production were quantified over 8–12 days. Samples were analyzed for dry matter, crude ash, neutral detergent fiber (NDF)/acid detergent fiber (ADF)/acid detergent lignin (ADL), crude protein, and gross energy. Metabolizable energy content of diets was estimated via a factor (0.83) from digestible energy. The proportion of beet pulp in diets was 13% (A3), 24% (A4), 20% (A5), and 21% (B2). Browse proportion was 11% (A3) and 32% (A4). Daily feed intake ranged between 1.5–1.7% of body weight (BW), digestibility of organic matter between 61–74%. Digestibility of fiber (NDF) was higher in beet pulp diets (A3=39%, A4=60%, A5=54%, B2=61%) than in the others (A1=48%, A2=33%, B1=48%). Supply of metabolizable energy (ME) ranged between 0.50–0.70 MJ ME/(kg BW0.75*day), meeting energy requirements of okapis of 0.50–0.53 MJ ME/(kg BW0.75*day) in general. Diets with beet pulp+browse were not found to be highest, but in the upper level of the range of forage proportions of this study. Palatable browse species were preferred over all other feedstuff offered. The use of unmolassed beet pulp as energy‐concentrate for browsing ruminants like the okapi can be recommended because diets high in this high‐fibre feedstuff resulted in adequate energy intakes. Nectar availability for hummingbirds was studied for two and a half years in an island of flooded forest in Uberlândia, MG, in the Cerrado region, the Neotropical savanna areas in Central Brazil. Flowering individuals of ten plant species from eight families that offered resources potentially used by hummingbirds were recorded along transects crisscrossing the area, which were surveyed every other week. The number of flowers was estimated for each plant. The volume and concentration of nectar were measured for a sample of flowers of each species, and the data were used to estimate the caloric content available per flower and the general resource availability in the area throughout the study period. Focal observations of hummingbird visits were carried out on blooming individuals of all plant species. Hummingbird flowers occurred throughout the study period between January 2001 and June 2003. Only three of the studied plants did not present clear ornithophilous features. Six hummingbird species were recorded in the area, but total nectar availability in the area was seldom sufficient for the daily energy requirements of a single bird. Therefore, it can be inferred from the study that these hummingbirds need to move among the mosaic of different plant physiognomies in the region in order to obtain enough energy for their survival. These movements may also contribute to increasing gene flow and regeneration of plant populations isolated in forest patches as the one studied here. 相似文献

This article assesses the potential of California agriculture to supply biofuel feedstock in the form of switchgrass. We construct a fully calibrated, multiregion, multi‐input and multioutput model of agricultural supply for California's Central Valley based on the principles of positive mathematical programming. We exploit agronomic information obtained from a biophysical model to estimate regional production functions for switchgrass. The model predicts the extent and location of potential feedstock production in the Central Valley. Our results suggest that switchgrass adoption rates differ widely among agricultural regions, and that switchgrass is not likely to displace specialty crops by much statewide. 相似文献

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) can result from reduced delivery of substrates, including oxygen and glucose, during pregnancy and may be caused by either placental insufficiency or maternal undernutrition. As a consequence of IUGR, there is altered programming of adipose tissue and this can be associated with metabolic diseases later in life. We have utilised two sheep models of IUGR, placental restriction and late gestation undernutrition, to determine the metabolic effects of growth restriction on foetal perirenal adipose tissue (PAT). Two-photon microscopy was employed to obtain an optical redox ratio, which gives an indication of cell metabolism. PAT of IUGR foetuses exhibited higher metabolic activity, altered lipid droplet morphology, upregulation of cytochrome c oxidase subunit genes and decreased expression of genes involved in growth and differentiation. Our results indicate that there are adaptations in PAT of IUGR foetuses that might be protective and ensure survival in response to an IUGR insult. 相似文献

Summary During the past four decades plant substrates have been developed, which have tended to replace the usual methods of cultivation
of soil under glass and plastic, more and more, making it independent from local soil conditions and rendering better plant
growth. With these substrates soil-borne plant diseases can be eliminated and water- and nutrient supply will be improved.
Substrates for common use are characterized by low bulk density, big pore space, good pore space distribution, sufficient
adsorption and buffering capacity, favourable water and nutrient supply and a slightly acid soil reaction (pH). The substrates
should be free from weed and pathogenic agents. If water and nutrient supply are adapted to the requirements of the cultivated
plant, unbuffered substrates such as stonewool and plastic foam can also be well suited and even be advantageous as long as
they guarantee sufficient macro pore space (air capacity) under conditions of water saturation. This paper attempts to give
a view on the possibilities and aims of the use of plant substrates. It deals furthermore with production, properties, use
and control of modern plant substrates.
