Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin profiles of dinoflagellate cultures of Gymnodinium catenatum Graham from the Yellow and South Seas in Korea were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography fluorometric detection. Strains from the Yellow Sea had predominantly carbamate toxins, while strains from Sujeongri and Chindong in the South Sea contained the N‐sulfocarbamoyl toxins, Cl,2, as major components including the presence of GTX5 and dcSTX in some strains. Toxin profiles from St. Deukryang Bay strains (South Sea) showed both characteristics of those in the South Sea and those in the Yellow Sea. Thirty strains could be divided into three groups based on cluster analysis of toxin compositions. Group I (Yellow Sea strains) was distinguished from Group II (Sujeongri and Chindong strains) by the absence of GTX5 and dcSTX. Group III comprised Deukryang Bay strains. In conclusion, the Yellow Sea and the South Sea were found to have different dinoflagellate populations with different toxin compositions.  相似文献

The rate of growth of juvenile hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria, was studied in the Coastal Bays of Maryland during an outbreak of the brown tide, Aureococcus anophagefferens. Brown tide dominated the plankton community during the month of June 2002, with cell densities at several sites reaching category 3 (>200,000 cells ml−1) levels. Temperatures during the bloom were 18.6–27.5 °C. Nutrient conditions preceding and during the bloom were conducive for the proliferation of A. anophagefferens: while inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus were <1 μg at N or P l−1, urea was elevated during bloom development. Organic nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon were in the range of levels observed in previous brown tide blooms and increased following the collapse of the bloom. Growth rates of juvenile clams were significantly lower during the period of the brown tide bloom than following its collapse. Growth rates of M. mercenaria were found to be negatively impacted at brown tide densities as low as 20,000 cells ml−1, or category 1 levels. The low growth rates of M. mercenaria could not be explained by temperature, as the lowest growth rates were found when water temperatures were at levels previously found to be optimal for growth.  相似文献

The impact of the presence of us humans as well as our activities to nature has led to over-exploitation of natural resources and to dramatic changes in land-use including the use of artificial fertilizers contributes to the deterioration of the natural environment. The population density, industrial processes and the use of fertilizers are the main causes for the eutrophication of river systems, estuaries and seas. There are several ways to determine the actual nutrient levels back to the 1950s, back to 1900 or even back to 1800. Available data indicate that the natural background concentrations of nutrients (pristine conditions or the period prior to the widespread use of artificial fertilizers and detergents) were dramatically lower than today. Available time series on chemical and biological data collected from different parts of the world show the (sometimes tremendous) increase in nutrient levels and the related productivity. The same time series, however, also show the decreases in values when measures were taken to reduce the nutrient emissions. Investigations of different systems all over the world show that nearly every system responses differently to eutrophication. Especially physical boundary conditions play an important role in the manifestation of the ultimate effect of local eutrophication. Apart from the physical boundary conditions also the transformation and retention of nutrients in estuarine and coastal systems contribute to system specific responses. Depending on all these different conditions, site specific responses with even site specific problems may occur. The challenge of this millennium is to really reach a balance between nature and mankind including its population size. A beneficial step in this discussion is assessing criteria to reduce eutrophication back to a level acceptable to both humans and nature.  相似文献

A program package has been developed to search for hidden tandem repeats of any specified type in the protein sequence databases. The applied algorithm of the locally optimal cyclic alignment is able to find subsequences possessing a certain profile-based periodicity type when no appreciable homology between periods is observed, as well as in the presence of arbitrary insertions/deletions. The profile can be adjusted to search for the periodicity types structurally and functionally important. The Swiss-Prot database has been analyzed to reveal the periodicities undetectable earlier that are caused by the secondary and super-secondary structure regularities of the NAD-binding sites. In particular, a significant periodicity of 24 aa was found to be characteristic of the absolute majority of domains possessing the Rossman (or Rossman-like) fold and displaying apparent regularity in their secondary structures, not being obvious at the primary structure level.  相似文献

During a controlled oil spill study in a freshwater wetland, four methods were used to track changes in microbial populations in response to in situ remediation treatments, including nutrient amendments and the removal of surface vegetation. Most probable number (MPN) estimates of alkane and aromatic hydrocarbon degraders showed divergence of the alkane and aromatic degrading populations during the first summer of the experiment. Alkane degraders increased in all plots by 1.5 orders of magnitude and aromatic degraders increased in oiled plots by 3.5 orders of magnitude. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis of biomass and community composition showed no essential differences among treatments. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of the sediment microbial community showed some differences in specific populations of organisms with respect to oiled and unoiled plots. Some organisms were only found in the oiled plots. Sediment toxicity measured against single celled algae showed that the oiled sediments were toxic into the second year of the study, but that nutrient addition relieved the toxicity more rapidly than natural attenuation of the oil.  相似文献

The new satellite ocean color sensors offer a means of detecting and monitoring algal blooms in the ocean and coastal zone. Beginning with SeaWiFS (Sea Wide Field-of-view Sensor) in September 1997, these sensors provide coverage every 1 to 2 days with 1-km pixel view at nadir. Atmospheric correction algorithms designed for the coastal zone combined with regional chlorophyll algorithms can provide good and reproducible estimates of chlorophyll, providing the means of monitoring various algal blooms. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by Karenia brevis in the Gulf of Mexico are particularly amenable to remote observation. The Gulf of Mexico has relatively clear water and K. brevis, in bloom conditions, tends to produce a major portion of the phytoplankton biomass. A monitoring program has begun in the Gulf of Mexico that integrates field data from state monitoring programs with satellite imagery, providing an improved capability for the monitoring of K. brevis blooms.  相似文献

A potential alternative to land application of livestock manures for cropproduction is the production of algae to recover the nitrogen andphosphorus present in the manure. Compared to terrestrial plants,filamentous algae have exceedingly high growth and nutrient uptake rates. Moreover, they are capable of year-round growth in temperate climates,can be harvested on adapted farm-scale equipment, and yield a biomassthat should be valuable as an animal feed supplement. The objective of thisresearch was to evaluate algal turf scrubber (ATS) technology to removenitrogen, phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand from raw andanaerobically digested dairy manure. Laboratory-scale ATS units wereoperated by continuously recycling wastewater and adding manure effluentsdaily. ATS units were seeded with algal consortia from a nearby streamand grown using dairy manures from two different dairy farms. Algalbiomass was harvested weekly and dried prior to analysis for total Kjeldahlnitrogen, total phosphorus, and inorganic constituents. Wastewater sampleswere analyzed for total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate,orthophosphate, conductivity and chemical oxygen demand. Using atypical manure input containing 0.6–0.96 g total nitrogen day-1,the dried algal yield was approximately 5 g m-2 day-1. Thedried algae contained approximately 1.5–2% phosphorus and 5–7%nitrogen. Algal nitrogen and phosphorus accounted for 42–100% ofinput ammonium-nitrogen (33–42% of total nitrogen) and 58–100%of input total phosphorus, respectively.  相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass values in Tavropos Reservoir, ranging from 92 to 1071 mg m–3, are within a range characteristic of oligotrophic waters. The seasonal sequence of biomass shows three annual peaks, differing from the monoacmic pattern seen in oligotrophic lakes. This sequence was profoundly affected by changes in water withdrawal and inflow rates. Diatoms, cryptophytes, chrysophytes and dinoflagellates, in that order, were the major constituents of the reservoir phytoplankton. The succession, from diatoms and chrysophytes in late winter-spring, to centric diatoms in late spring-summer and again to diatom-chrysophytes in late autumn was similar to that in oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献
