Nitrogen mineralization rates were estimated in 19-year-old interplantings of black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) with dinitrogen fixing autumn-olive (Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb.) or black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.) and in pure walnut plantings at two locations in Illinois USA. N mineralization rates were measured repeatedly over a one year period usingin situ incubations of soil cores in oxygen-permeable polyethylene bags at 0–10 and 10–20 cm soil depths, and also by burying mixed-bed ion-exchange resin in soil. Mineralization rates were highest in summer and in plots containing actinorhizal Elaeagnus and Alnus in contrast with pure walnut plots. Elaeagnus plots at one location yielded 236 kg of mineral N ha–1 yr–1 in the upper 20 cm of soil, a value higher than previously reported for temperate decidous forest soils in North America. The highest mean plot values for N mineralization in soil at a location were 185 kg ha–1 yr–1 for Alnus interplantings and 90 kg ha–1 yr–1 for pure walnut plots. Plots which had high N mineralization rates also had the largest walnut trees. Despite low pH (4.1 and 6.5) and low extractable P concentrations (1.4 and 0.7 mg kg–1 dry mass) at the two locations, nitrification occurred in all plots throughout the growing season. NO 3 –N was the major form of mineralized N in soil in the actinorhizal interplantings, with NH 4 + –N being the major form of mineral N in control plots. Walnut size was highly correlated with soil nitrogen mineralization, particularly soil NO 3 –N production in a plot.  相似文献

Summary Using a root nodule cuvette and a continuous flow gas exchange system, we simultaneously measured the rates of carbon dioxide evolution, oxygen uptake and acetylene reduction by nodules ofAlnus rubra. This system allowed us to measure the respiration rates of single nodules and to determine the effects of oxygen concentration and temperature on the energy cost of nitrogen fixation. Energy cost was virtually unchanged (2.8–3.5 moles of carbon dioxide or oxygen per mole of ethylene) from 16 to 26°C (pO2=20 kPa) while respiration and nitrogenase activity were highly temperature dependent. At temperatures below 16°C, nitrogenase activity decreased more than did respiration and as a result, energy cost rose sharply. Acetylene reduction ceased below 8°C. Inhibition of nitrogenase activity at low temperatures was rapidly reversed upon return to higher temperatures. At high temperatures (above 30°C) nitrogenase activity declined irreversibly, while respiration and energy cost increased.Energy cost was nearly unchanged at oxygen partial pressures of 5 to 20 kPa (temperature of 20°C). Respiration and nitrogenase activity were strongly correlated with oxygen tension. Below 5 kPa, acetylene reduction and oxygen uptake decreased sharply while production of carbon dioxide increased, indicating fermentation. Fermentation alone was unable to support nitrogenase activity. Acetylene reduction was independent of oxygen concentration from 15 to 30 kPa. Nitrogenase activity decreased and energy cost rose above 30 kPa until nearly complete inactivation of nitrogenase at 70–80 kPa. Activity declined gradually, such that acetylene reduction at a constant oxygen concentration was stable, but showed further inactivation when oxygen concentration was once again increased. Alder nodules appear to consist of a large number of compartments that differ in the degree to which nitrogenase is protected from excess oxygen.Supported by United States Department of Agriculture Grant 78-59-2252-0-1-005-1  相似文献

Red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) and sitka alder (A. viridis ssp. sinuata [Regel] Löve & Löve) are nitrogen-fixing woody species that grow sympatrically along the Pacific coast of North America. Red alder is found in poorly drained lowlands, as well as in soils of moist upland slopes, whereas sitka alder generally colonizes well-drained soils. To identify factors that contribute to flood tolerance, we conducted greenhouse experiments subjecting both species to a 20-day flood and 10-day recovery and red alder to a 50-day flood and 20-day recovery. We determined the effect of this stress on nitrogenase activity, root and nodule alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity, lenticel and adventitious root development, relative growth rate (RGR), and leaf gas exchange. After 24 h of flooding, nitrogenase activity could not be detected in either species. Limited nitrogenase activity did return in red alder at the end of a 10-day recovery following the 20-day flood, but sitka alder showed no recovery of nitrogenase activity. After 50 days of continuous flooding, red alder nitrogenase activity returned to pretreatment levels. Red alder root and nodule ADH activity was more than twice that of sitka alder under flooded conditions. Sitka alder showed extensive root mortality and leaf abscission over the same 20-day flooding period. Flooded red alder exhibited an initial decline in root RGR, but recovered between days 10 and 20 with the formation of adventitious roots. Furthermore, initiation of adventitious roots in red alder coincided with an increase in stomatal conductance without a similar recovery of carbon dioxide exchange rate. Sitka alder formed few adventitious roots, lost much of its root and leaf biomass, and showed no restoration of growth during flooding or recovery. Different responses of red and sitka alder to flooding serve as a partial explanation for the different patterns of distribution of these species and suggest some adaptations of red alder that permit flood tolerance.  相似文献

Short-term studies of tree growth at elevated CO2 suggest that forest productivity may increase as atmospheric CO2 concentrations rise, although low soil N availability may limit the magnitude of this response. There have been few studies of growth and N2 fixation by symbiotic N2-fixing woody species under elevated CO2 and the N inputs these plants could provide to forest ecosystems in the future. We investigated the effect of twice ambient CO2 on growth, tissue N accretion, and N2 fixation of nodulated Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. grown under low soil N conditions for 160 d. Root, nodule, stem, and leaf dry weight (DW) and N accretion increased significantly in response to elevated CO2. Whole-plant biomass and N accretion increased 54% and 40%, respectively. Delta-15N analysis of leaf tissue indicated that plants from both treatments derived similar proportions of their total N from symbiotic fixation suggesting that elevated CO2 grown plants fixed approximately 40% more N than did ambient CO2 grown plants. Leaves from both CO2 treatments showed similar relative declines in leaf N content prior to autumnal leaf abscission, but total N in leaf litter increased 24% in elevated compared to ambient CO2 grown plants. These results suggest that with rising atmospheric CO2 N2-fixing woody species will accumulate greater amounts of biomass N through N2 fixation and may enhance soil N levels by increased litter N inputs.  相似文献

Litterfall and nutrient returns in red alder stands in western Washington   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Litterfall was collected over 1 year from eight natural stands of red alder growing on different sites in western Washington. The stands occurred at various elevations and on different soils, and differed in age, basal area, and site index. Most litterfall was leaf litter (average 86 percent). Amounts of litterfall and leaf litter varied significantly (P<0.05) among the sites. Average weights of litterfall and leaf litter in kg ha–1 yr–1, were 5150 and 4440, respectively. Weight of leaf litter was not significantly (P<0.05) related to site index, stand age, or basal area. The sites varied significantly (P<0.05) in concentrations of all elements determined in the leaf litter, except Zn. Average chemical concentrations were: N, 1.98 percent; P, 0.09 percent; K, 0.44 percent; Ca, 1.01 percent; Mg, 0.21 percent; S, 0.17 percent; SO4–S, nil; Fe, 324 ppm; Mn, 311 ppm; Zn, 53 ppm; Cu, 13 ppm; and Al, 281 ppm. There were significant correlations between some stand characteristics and concentrations of some elements, and among the different chemical components of the leaf litter. Important correlations were found between stand age and P concentration (r=–0.84,P<0.01); weight of leaf litter and P concentration (r=0.74,P<0.05); weight of leaf litter and K concentration (r=0.71,P<0.05); concentrations of N and S (r=0.81,P<0.05); and concentrations of Fe and Al (r=0.98,P<0.01). Returns of the different elements to the soil by leaf litter varied among the different sites. Average nutrient and Al returns, in kg ha–1 yr–1, were: N, 82; Ca, 41; K, 19; Mg, 8; S, 7; P, 4; Fe, 1; Mn, 1; Al, 1; Zn, 0.2, and Cu, <0.1.  相似文献

In this study we assessed the effect of current velocity and shredder presence, manipulated in artificial channels, on the structure of the fungal assemblage colonizing alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner ) leaves incubated in coarse and fine mesh bags. Fungal sporulation rates, cumulative conidial production and number of species of aquatic hyphomycetes were higher in leaves exposed to high rather than to low current velocity. The opposite was observed regarding Simpson's index (D) on the fungal assemblage. Some species of aquatic hyphomycetes were consistently stimulated in high current channels. No effect of shredders or of mesh type was observed. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In the Low Arctic, a warming climate is increasing rates of permafrost degradation and altering vegetation. Disturbance associated with warming permafrost can change microclimate and expose areas of ion-rich mineral substrate for colonization by plants. Consequently, the response of vegetation to warming air temperatures may differ significantly from disturbed to undisturbed tundra. Across a latitudinal air temperature gradient, we tested the hypothesis that the microenvironment in thaw slumps would be warmer and more nutrient rich than undisturbed tundra, resulting in altered plant community composition and increased green alder ( Alnus viridis subsp. fruticosa ) growth and reproduction. Our results show increased nutrient availability, soil pH, snow pack, ground temperatures, and active layer thickness in disturbed terrain and suggest that these variables are important drivers of plant community structure. We also found increased productivity, catkin production, and seed viability of green alder at disturbed sites. Altered community composition and enhancement of alder growth and reproduction show that disturbances exert a strong influence on deciduous shrubs that make slumps potential seed sources for undisturbed tundra. Overall, these results indicate that accelerated disturbance regimes have the potential to magnify the effects of warming temperature on vegetation. Consequently, understanding the relative effects of temperature and disturbance on Arctic plant communities is critical to predicting feedbacks between northern ecosystems and global climate change.  相似文献

Pollen analyses were undertaken on a small peat bog (Ecuelles 06° 49′ 41″E, 45° 58′ 49″N, 1855 m asl), located on the Anterne mountain (Upper-Arve Valley, French north-western Alps). The study highlights the role of green alder (Alnus alnobetula [Ehrh] K. Koch) in Holocene vegetation dynamics of the nowadays treeless subalpine belt. At this place, the onset of human perturbation caused a retreat of fir and arolla-pine stands and an expansion of green alder, which consequently dominated the landscape from 3700 up to 1965 cal. BP. After 1965 cal. BP, the clearings led to the present grasslands with few ligneous species (spruce, larch) on inaccessible cliffs or green alder on the edges of torrents or in avalanche corridors. Picea percentages have increased after 3900 cal. BP, but, due to human activities, spruce has never constituted large stands in the study area. The present general expansion of green alder is due to the decreasing human impact and it constitutes the first step of re-afforestation that should lead to mixed stands of spruce and arolla-pine. The study gives a new evidence of the past diversity of the vegetation cover and do not support the idea that green alder colonization at the subalpine belt constitutes a long-term risk for the vegetation diversity.  相似文献
